Despite Loss, ‘Fitzmagic’ Has Earned Bucs’ Starting Job over Jameis Winston

The “Fitzmagic” is not gone, nor should it be removed from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lineup anytime soon.

How quickly everyone forgets.

One poor half was all it took for public opinion to turn on Ryan Fitzpatrick despite the fact that he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for the first two weeks of the 2018 season.

Although, a near second-half comeback had everyone believing again.

Even in a 30-27 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday at Raymond James Stadium, the 35-year-old gunslinger solidified himself as the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback, despite Jameis Winston’s imminent return.

“We’ll worry about that when the time comes,” Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter said last Monday, per the Tampa Bay Times Martin Fennelly

The time has come, since Winston’s three-game suspension for violating the NFL‘s personal conduct policy ends Tuesday. Koetter can’t seriously entertain the idea of replacing Fitzpatrick after he became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 400 or more yards in three consecutive games. The 14-year veteran only needs one more 400-yard game to tie Dan Marino and Peyton Manning for the most such games in a season, according to NFL Research

“If Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Griffin, whoever it is, is playing lights-out, I don’t think it’s fair right now just to say, ‘Yes, automatically, [Jameis] is going to be the guy,’” general manager Jason Licht said a week prior to the start of the regular season, per Sports Illustrated‘s Michael Shapiro

Will the Buccaneers adhere to this philosophy? They should.

Even in a sloppily played and turnover-prone contest, Tampa Bay rallied around its veteran signal-caller and nearly had enough to erase a 20-point halftime gap. Fitzpatrick completed 19 of 29 second-half passes as the Bucs rattled off 17 unanswered points to come within three points of tying Pittsburgh.

Fitzpatrick’s first-half performance wasn’t nearly as bad as portrayed, either. His three interceptions will be scrutinized—in a misplaced attempt to rationalize the argument that Winston should start upon his return—even though none fell squarely on the quarterback’s play.

All three occurred on consecutive second-quarter drives.

Pittsburgh linebacker Jon Bostic tipped the first, and Mike Hilton caught the deflection to stop the Buccaneers in the red zone, as seen below:

A protection breakdown allowed a free runner at the quarterback. Right tackle Demar Dotson didn’t slide his protection to the outside threat. Instead, he locked onto T.J. Watt. Fitzpatrick tried to beat the blitz by throwing behind it, only to have his pass ricochet off Bostic’s helmet.

The second mistake appeared to be a miscommunication between the quarterback and his target, Mike Evans:

NFL @NFL

Another @Steelers INT!

This time the rookie @rell_island6 comes up with the pick. #HereWeGo

📺: #PITvsTB on ESPN https://t.co/C9Pj1Ezlzh

Evans slowed his route and attempted to sit in the soft spot of the Steelers’ zone coverage, whereas Fitzpatrick seemingly expected the 6’5″ receiver to keep running between the dropping linebacker and safety.

The third interception was a backbreaker, as linebacker Bud Dupree returned the ball 10 yards for a touchdown:

NFL @NFL

PICK-6! 🚨

Interception #3 for the @Steelers defense! #HereWeGo

📺: #PITvsTB on ESPN https://t.co/8ks7mxFjU6

Nose tackle Daniel McCullers provided pressure and placed his gigantic paw in the way of Fitzpatrick’s throwing motion, which caused the ball to sail despite an open underneath receiver.

So much is placed on the quarterback, even when he’s not the problem.

For example, Fitzpatrick can’t be blamed for dropping a pair of potential touchdown passes, as Chris Godwin did. The second-year wide receiver lost a fumble as well. Godwin finished the contest with five receptions, 74 yards and a touchdown, but his mistakes left too many points on the field and directly led to seven Steelers points.

Furthermore, 27 points and 455 yards of total offense should be more than enough to capture a victory. Instead, the Buccaneers fell to 2-1 overall because the defense surrendered 413 total yards and couldn’t get a key stop late in the game.

After all, Fitzpatrick didn’t attempt to tackle tight end Vance McDonald only to be trucked and give up a 75-yard touchdown. Chris Conte suffered that embarrassment and left the game with an injured knee

The quarterback displayed his leadership skills during his postgame press conference.

“Three interceptions on me. Can’t have them. Hard to win a game that way,” Fitzpatrick told reporters. “We obviously dug ourselves a pretty big hole there. The great thing to me coming out of this game is the belief in the huddle during the second half, and guys not wavering and not blinking and having the feeling the whole time we were going to come back and win the game.”

Even if the Buccaneers, specifically Fitzpatrick, fell completely flat on their faces, his previous performances built enough goodwill to hold off the former starter.

Prior to Monday, the Buccaneers quarterback led the league with 819 passing yards, 13.4 yards per attempt and a 151.5 passer rating. He’s still the league’s leading passer with 1,230 yards through three games, and the Buccaneers feature the NFL’s No. 1 offense.

How good Winston looks or how much he’s prepared for another opportunity doesn’t matter—and he looks great, according to quarterback guru George Whitfield Jr.:

George Whitfield Jr. @georgewhitfield

3.5 weeks of tireless preparation by Jameis Winston has concluded. I know how excited he is to join his teammates & coaches. #Buccaneers @Jaboowins https://t.co/vrS39riatn

The Buccaneers are Fitzpatrick’s team for now.

“He’s playing on fire right now,” wide receiver DeSean Jackson said last week, per the Washington Times‘ Matthew Paras. “With the way the team is rallying behind him and just playing lights-out football, you have to kind of honor it. You can’t take the hot man out. You got the hot fire right now.”

Nothing has changed. Fitzpatrick remains the hot hand despite some first-half slippage. Winston may be ready to play, but he must earn back his teammates’ trust after seeing what his backup-turned-starter accomplished.

Koetter didn’t make an immediate decision about Tampa Bay’s Week 4 starting quarterback, even though the right move is obvious.

“Let’s see what happens,” Koetter said, per the Tampa Bay TimesRick Stroud. “I’d love to get a chance to talk to Jameis [Winston] face to face before I tell the rest of the world.”

The Chicago Bears defense won’t be as forgiving, but Fitzpatrick may have a little something up his sleeve.

As British author J.B. Priestley once said“I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.”

Russian decision to deploy S-300 in Syria ‘a major mistake’: US

“We think introducing the S-300s to the Syrian government would be a significant escalation by the Russians and something that we hope, if these press reports are accurate, they would reconsider,” US National Security Advisor, John Bolton, said on Monday.

“We have American forces in the area we’re concerned about,” Bolton said.

“The Israelis have a legitimate right to self-defence against this Iranian aggressive behavior, and what we’re all trying to do is reduce tensions, reduce the possibility of major new hostilities. That’s why the president has spoken to this issue and why we would regard introducing the S-300 as a major mistake.” he added.

In a televised statement on Monday, Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said the decision to “transfer the missile defence system to the Syrian armed forces “was taken by President Vladimir Putin and is one of the “response measures”.

On the same day, the Kremlin accused Israeli pilots of “premeditated actions” over the downing of a Russian plane in Syria last week, warning it will harm relations between the two countries.

“According to information of our military experts, the reason (behind the downing) were premeditated actions by Israeli pilots which certainly cannot but harm our relations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

‘Change the situation dramatically’

However, the Kremlin said the installation of S-300 was aimed at increasing safety of Russian military and “not directed at any third country”.

Russia will also block navigation and satellite systems, as well as communications of warplanes operating in the eastern Mediterranean, according to the defence minister.

Moscow has blamed Israel for the accidental shooting down of the aircraft with 15 people onboard. The Israeli military, however, said that Syria’s indiscriminate air defence fire was the cause of the plane crash.

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands, reporting from Moscow, said the announcement on missiles seemed to be linked to the incident with Israel.

“The S-300 was a deal that had been signed with Syria in 2013, but Israel put its foot down on negotiation with Russia and Russia decided that it was going to hold off delivering these units,” he said.

“In the aftermath of the events last week in which a Russian plane was shot down in the area over the Syrian coast, Russia has obviously decided to go against that agreement with Israel.”

Elias Farhat, a military analyst and retired Lebanese army general, said the Syrians have already been trained on how to operate the S-300 a few years ago.

“There have been leaks that Syrian officers went to Russia in order to train on the usage [of the missile system],” he told Al Jazeera from the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

“The S-300 is a very effective anti-aircraft missile … Israel is aware of that,” Farhat said.

“So that will change the situation dramatically, and there will be no more freedom of movement for the Israeli air force in the Syrian airspace.”

Friendly fire

Monday’s incident highlighted the dangers posed by the conflicting interests of various powers in the crowded skies over war-torn Syria and threatened to damage relations between Russia and Israel.

The incident was also the worst case of friendly fire between Russia and Syria since Moscow’s military intervention in the country in support of President Bashar al-Assad‘s forces in September 2015.

Since intervening in Syria’s war, Russia has generally turned a blind eye to Israeli attacks inside the country.

Israel has carried out about 200 air raids in the last two years, according to Israeli officials.

For several years, Israel and Russia have maintained a special hotline to prevent their air forces from clashing in the skies over Syria. Israeli military officials have previously praised its effectiveness.

A dispute between Israel and Russia could restrict Israel’s ability to mount air raids inside Syria on what it considers the greatest threat to its security from the Syria conflict: the build-up of Iranian forces or Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters.

Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers Hang on to Beat Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buccaneers on MNF

It was only a matter of time before Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick stopped playing like an MVP and the Pittsburgh Steelers stopped playing like a last-place team, and both early-season trends ended Monday.

Pittsburgh won Monday’s interconference clash at Raymond James Stadium, 30-27, and improved to 1-1-1, while Tampa Bay fell to 2-1.

Ben Roethlisberger (30-of-38 for 353 yards, three touchdowns and one interception) outplayed Fitzpatrick (30-of-50 for 411 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions), and a Steelers defense that allowed 42 points to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 bounced back by forcing four turnovers.

Big Ben, Steelers Offense Still Talented Enough to Overcome Drama

The Steelers have been defined by their off-field headlines instead of on-field ones this season.

Running back Le’Veon Bell is yet to sign his franchise tender and report to the team during a holdout after the two sides failed to come to terms on a contract extension in the offseason. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Pittsburgh is entertaining trade offers for the dynamic playmaker.

As if that wasn’t enough, wide receiver Antonio Brown has been the center of controversy at times.

Terez Paylor of Yahoo Sports recapped the drama with No. 84, noting he was reportedly fined for missing practice last Monday and tweeted “trade me let’s find out” when former team publicist Ryan Scarpino suggested Roethlisberger was the reason Brown is so successful.

Roethlisberger rose above the noise and seized control in the first half with touchdown passes to Brown, Ryan Switzer and Vance McDonald—who unleashed a vicious stiff arm. Big Ben also displayed his trademark escapability in the pocket, when he somehow evaded defenders and turned a potential sack into a positive gain for a monster first down in the final minutes after Tampa Bay pulled within three.

His touch, along with hard running from James Conner (15 carries for 61 yards) and 116 receiving yards from the dangerous JuJu Smith-Schuster, was enough to overcome the comeback attempt.

It was a reminder of how talented the six-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion can be. On Monday, he elevated the Steelers above the concerns and distractions.

FitzMagic Expiration Date Rapidly Approaching

Nobody outside of perhaps Patrick Mahomes II played better than Fitzpatrick in the season’s first two weeks.

He captured back-to-back NFC Offensive Player of the Week awards with a combined 819 passing yards and eight touchdowns and looked like more than a temporary replacement for the suspended Jameis Winston.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted Jay Glazer of Fox said Tampa Bay would stay with Fitzpatrick unless he does “something drastically bad.”

Throwing three interceptions in Monday’s first half, including one that Bud Dupree returned for a touchdown, would qualify as drastically bad. Pittsburgh parlayed Fitzpatrick’s mistakes into a commanding 30-10 halftime lead, and attention naturally turned to who will play Week 4 against the Chicago Bears.

Mike Tanier @MikeTanier

I’m stunned to see Ryan Fitzpatrick falling back to earth after a couple of great games. Highly out if character.

Ben Axelrod @BenAxelrod

Jameis Winston sitting at home, waving a terrible towel.

Will Brinson @WillBrinson

“There is literally no performance terrible enough by Ryan Fitzpatrick to get Jameis Winston the start in Week 4.”

*narrator voice*

“There was.”

To the veteran’s credit, he led the Buccaneers to within three in the second half after touchdown passes to Chris Goodwin and Mike Evans, and he racked up record yardage by throwing so much in comeback mode. But he threw three straight incompletions when he got the ball back with under four minutes remaining and a chance to win.

The long-term answer is Winston, who is just 24 years old and the franchise quarterback after the Buccaneers selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft. Fitzpatrick is a 35-year-old journeyman who has never been consistent enough to serve as the franchise cornerstone for any of the seven teams he’s played for, which was on full display against Pittsburgh.

Tampa Bay should give Fitzpatrick one more start before turning the reins back over to Winston, but only because of the schedule. It faces a Bears team that leads the league with 14 sacks on a short week but has a bye after Sunday’s game, which gives Winston more time to re-familiarize himself with the offense.

Roughing-The-Passer Controversy Takes Center Stage Again

The Steelers and Buccaneers made dubious history Monday and continued an early theme in the 2018 NFL season.

Gerald McCoy and Jason Pierre-Paul of Tampa Bay and Stephon Tuitt and Sean Davis of Pittsburgh were all flagged for roughing the passer in the first half. The ones on the Buccaneers were particularly notable because Roethlisberger did his best to sell one, while McCoy didn’t even fall on the quarterback in the other.

According to Scott Kacsmar of Football Outsiders, it marked the first time in 18 seasons both teams were penalized for roughing the passer multiple times in a game, and it happened before halftime.

Matt Miller @nfldraftscout

“Flag on the play. Personal foul. Looking at the quarterback. 15 yards. First down.”

Mike Tanier @MikeTanier

It’s fun watching the NFL invent new ways to sabotage its own product just to prove who’s in charge.

Michael Lombardi @mlombardiNFL

The NFL should put QB in different jerseys like practice. Then the D can just tag off. Horrible.

Roughing the passer has been a significant talking point this year with officials penalizing defenders who land on signal-callers with all or most of their body weight. Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews has been victimized by questionable calls in back-to-back weeks, and even Aaron Rodgers—a quarterback who has benefitted from plenty of roughing calls—criticized the newfound focus.

The issue reached a tipping point Monday when Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase revealed defensive end William Hayes tore his ACL while trying to avoid putting his entire body weight on Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr during a sack, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Viewers will continue to complain about the penalties throughout the 2018 season, and Monday’s contest was no different.

What’s Next?

The Steelers will host the rival Baltimore Ravens in Week 4, while the Buccaneers will travel to Chicago to face the first-place Bears.

Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors: Tom Thibodeau Failed in Convincing SG to Rejoin Team

SHENZHEN, CHINA - OCTOBER 04: Head coach Tom Thibodeau(L) and Jimmy Butler #23 of the Minnesota Timberwolves looks on during practice at Shenzhen Gymnasium as part of 2017 NBA Global Games China on October 4, 2017 in Shenzhen, China. (Photo by Zhong Zhi/Getty Images)

Zhong Zhi/Getty Images

Minnesota Timberwolves head coach and president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau met with All-Star Jimmy Butler on Monday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

According to Wojnarowski, Thibodeau hoped to “convince [Butler] to eventually rejoin the team in the preseason.”

The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski reported earlier this month that Butler and Thibodeau had met in Los Angeles, at which point Butler made it clear he wanted a trade out of Minnesota.

According to an earlier report from Wojnarowski, the Timberwolves aren’t a united front internally when it comes to the next step after Butler’s request.

Team owner Glen Taylor is looking to trade Butler and let fellow owners and front-office executives know as much at the NBA’s board of governors meetings. Thibodeau, however, wants to retain Butler.

If Thibodeau is destined to get fired at season’s end, those familiar with his thinking say he would rather do so reaching the playoffs for a second consecutive year with the benefit of Butler on the roster,” per Wojnarowski.

The fact that Thibodeau reportedly held a subsequent meeting with Butler would lend credence to the idea he wishes to maintain the status quo in 2018-19.

Butler didn’t attend the Timberwolves’ media day Monday, with Krawczynski reporting the team gave him permission to skip the event. In addition, Butler “will not be available for on-court activities early in training camp.”

The Timberwolves are undoubtedly in a tough position.

They tip off the regular season Oct. 17 on the road against the San Antonio Spurs, leaving Thibodeau and general manager Scott Layden little time to work out a feasible trade before the year gets underway. And the longer Minnesota waits to trade Butler—if at all—the more his value diminishes. He can opt out of his contract next summer and become a free agent.

One thing seems clear, though: Butler remains unmoved and doesn’t foresee a long-term future in Minneapolis.

UPDATE: Sept. 25, 2018, 1:04 p.m. AEST Instagram chief executive Kevin Systrom has issued a statement regarding the co-founders’ departure. This article has been updated to reflect this.

Instagram’s two co-founders are stepping down from the company, according to a report by The New York Times.

Chief executive Kevin Systrom and chief technical officer Mike Krieger, who founded the social media platform in 2010, have resigned, with the publisher noting that “people with direct knowledge of the matter” have confirmed the pair will leave Instagram in a matter of weeks.

SEE ALSO: Instagram expands shopping features to take on Amazon

Notifying Instagram’s senior team and its parent company, Facebook, on Monday, Systrom and Krieger have not given a specific reason for their departure, according to the Times. Facebook bought Instagram in 2012 for roughly $1 billion in a combination of cash and stock.

Systrom issued a statement on Instagram’s blog, saying that he and Krieger were “planning on taking some time off to explore our curiosity and creativity again.”

Mike and I are grateful for the last eight years at Instagram and six years with the Facebook team. We’ve grown from 13 people to over a thousand with offices around the world, all while building products used and loved by a community of over one billion. We’re now ready for our next chapter.

We’re planning on taking some time off to explore our curiosity and creativity again. Building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that’s what we plan to do.

We remain excited for the future of Instagram and Facebook in the coming years as we transition from leaders to two users in a billion. We look forward to watching what these innovative and extraordinary companies do next.

Mashable has reached out to Facebook for comment.

It’s the latest in a wave of executive departures of recent times, one that’s proven a particular headache for Facebook.

Facebook’s chief security officer, Alex Stamos, announced his departure from the company in March. His decision came after disputes over how much Facebook should reveal about governments misusing the platform and changes within the organisation, according to the New York Times.

Another Facebook-owned company WhatsApp saw CEO and co-founder Jan Koum leave in May, following the high-profile Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal. This was just six months after WhatsApp cofounder Brian Acton left the company and joined the #DeleteFacebook movement.

There’s been significant movement at Instagram since CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s executive shuffle in May, restructuring Facebook into three core groups within products and engineering. This reshuffle saw Chief Product Officer Chris Cox move to oversee Instagram, as well as Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger.

Boston Red Sox Set Franchise Record for Wins with 106 After Victory vs. Orioles

BOSTON, MA - SEPTEMBER 24: Mookie Betts #50 of the Boston Red Sox returns to the dugout after hitting a two-run home run in the second inning of a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park on September 24, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Adam Glanzman/Getty Images)

The Boston Red Sox made history with Monday’s 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

The Red Sox now have an MLB-best 106 wins, which is the most in franchise history over a single season.

MLB @MLB

The 2018 @RedSox could be something special … https://t.co/OVhfmxpJ6n

The Boston Globe‘s Peter Abraham added some perspective on Boston’s achievement:

Pete Abraham @PeteAbe

Red Sox only the 19th team in MLB history to win 106 or more games, just the sixth since 1975.

2018 Red Sox 106 wins
2001 Mariners 116 wins
1998 Yankees 114 wins
1998 Braves 106 wins
1986 Mets 108 wins
1975 Reds 108 wins

Boston dropped back-to-back games in extra innings to the Cleveland Indians before notching its record-setting win.

The Red Sox got a strong start from right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, who struck out 10 and allowed one run over five innings. The bulk of the offense came in the second inning, as Brock Holt and Christian Vazquez each brought home a run before Mookie Betts hit a two-run homer to left.

MLB @MLB

State your MVP case, @mookiebetts. https://t.co/aNHYUiGu7m

It’s the third straight appearance in which Betts has homered. The 25-year-old right fielder is trying to assert himself at the top of the American League Most Valuable Player race.

If history is any indicator, then Red Sox fans are in for an October to remember. Boston won two World Series (1912 and 1915) in its previous three 100-win seasons.

Winning 106 games is something to celebrate, but it also adds even more pressure on the players to deliver in the playoffs. Boston failed to advance past the American League Division Series in 2016 and 2017 after winning the AL East.

As much success as the 2018 Red Sox have enjoyed in the regular season, they’ll ultimately be judged on what they do in the postseason.

Report: Vikings’ Everson Griffen Allegedly Threatened to Shoot Someone at Hotel

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - SEPTEMBER 09: Everson Griffen #97 of the Minnesota Vikings celebrates after sacking Jimmy Garoppolo #10 of the San Francisco 49ers in the first half of the game at U.S. Bank Stadium on September 9, 2018 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo by Adam Bettcher/Getty Images)

Adam Bettcher/Getty Images

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen was reportedly named in a police report regarding an incident at a Minneapolis hotel in which a person allegedly “[threatened] to shoot someone in the middle of the day on Saturday.”

KSTP’s Ryan Raiche reported Monday that Minneapolis police redacted the person’s name in the report, but a source told Raiche that Griffen was the man in question.

An emergency dispatcher relayed to officers that a man had issued the threat unless hotel staff allowed him in his room.

Raiche also reported Griffen allegedly “threatened to assault staff members” before leaving the hotel. Officers didn’t make any arrests and didn’t find a gun after responding to the scene.

According to a report from Seth Kaplan of Fox 9, Griffen was then arrested for allegedly trying to break into a teammate’s home and is having a mental health evaluation.

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman offered a statement on the allegations: “We are aware of the situation involving Everson Griffen and certainly concerned by what we have heard. We are currently focused on Everson’s well-being and providing the appropriate support for him and his family.”

Griffen didn’t play in the Vikings’ 27-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. In the team’s official injury report, Griffen was listed as out with knee injury.

Head coach Mike Zimmer declined to go into specifics about his availability after the Bills game.

He’s having a personal matter and I’m going to leave it at that,” Zimmer said, per the Star Tribune‘s Andrew Krammer.

Ahead of Minnesota’s Week 4 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams, the Vikings said Griffen didn’t practice Monday, citing the knee injury but adding his absence was also “not injury related.”

Believe Survivors supporters walk out as Kavanaugh stands firm

Women and their supporters from across the United States walked out of their offices, businesses and homes on Monday to support Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez, who have accused Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, of sexual assault.

“We believe Dr Blasey Ford. We believe Deborah Ramirez,” the event’s organisers said on its Facebook page. “We believe survivors,” it added. “And we won’t stand for Senate Republicans’ despicable attempts to strong-arm a sexual assault survivor.”

Prior to the walkout, dozens of rights groups held a protest in the Senate office buildings, as well as outside the Supreme Court.

Many chanted “I believe Christine Ford,” as they called on the Senate leadership to take the allegations made by Ford and Ramirez seriously.

US Capitol Police said that more than 125 people had been arrested on charges of unlawfully demonstrating in Senate office buildings.

While I am frightened, please know, my fear will not hold me back from testifying and you will be provided answers to all of your questions.

Christine Blasey Ford in letter to Senator Chuck Grassely

The protests came on the same day a letter Ford sent to Republican Chuck Grassely, the Senate Judiciary chairman, was made public. In the letter, Ford said she faced death threats and was relying on her lawyers and Grassley to “agree to conditions that will allow me to testify in a fair setting”.

“While I am frightened, please know, my fear will not hold me back from testifying and you will be provided answers to all of your questions,” Ford wrote. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Kavanaugh: ‘I haven’t sexually assaulted anyone’

In an interview with Fox News, which aired Monday evening, Kavanaugh said he would not step aside, saying “the truth is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone, in high school or otherwise”.

Ford, a psychology professor at Palo Alto University in California, said Kavanaugh attacked her and tried to remove her clothing while he was drunk at a party when they were both teenagers in the 1980s.

Kavanaugh told Fox News he was not present at a party like the one described by Ford and noted that others Ford said were at the gathering had no recollection of it.

“I am not questioning and have not questioned that perhaps Dr Ford at some point in her life was sexually assaulted by someone at some place, but what I know is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone,” Kavanaugh said. “I want a fair process where I can defend my integrity and I know I’m telling the truth. I know my lifelong record and I’m not going to let false accusations drive me out of this process.”

The interview came a day after the New Yorker magazine published the account of Ramirez in which she alleged Kavanaugh exposed himself to her without consent during a drunken party at Yale University in the 1980s.

“I can still see his face, and his hips coming forward, like when you pull up your pants,” she was quoted as saying by the New Yorker.

Kavanaugh denied the story, calling it “a smear, plain and simple”.

#BelieveSurvivors

The controversy over Kavanaugh is unfolding just weeks before November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from Trump’s fellow Republicans, against a backdrop of the #MeToo movement fighting sexual harassment and assault.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in three women in the United States experience some form of sexual violence in their lives. About 63 percent of sexual assaults in the US are not reported to the police. More than 90 percent of sexual assault survivors on US college campuses do not report the incident.

Online, women shared their messages of solidarity to Ford, Ramirez and the thousands who have been sexually assaulted in their lives. Many called out Trump, as well as some Senate Republicans who have questioned the women’s accounts.

“Together, we show them the power of solidarity, the power of having a voice,” said Twitter user and activist Delaney Tarr.

Seeing women stand together for their sisters honestly makes me so emotional.

This is- we are- the role models for every girl in the country.

Kavanaugh drama rattles GOP support

Kavanaugh Confirmation

Republicans signal they will wait to pass judgment on the Supreme Court nominee until hearing from him and an accuser later this week.

Senate Republicans have gone from confidently predicting the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court to a new message: It all comes down to Thursday.

The GOP is staking Kavanaugh’s prospects to his hearing later this week, when he and Christine Blasey Ford will testify publicly about her allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school more than 30 years ago. It’s a shift that puts some of the onus on Kavanaugh to convince a growing number of wary senators whether his word is more credible than hers in the battle over the high court seat.

Story Continued Below

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is warning his colleagues both publicly and privately that his plan is to hold a floor vote on Kavanaugh no matter what happens in the Judiciary Committee, possibly as soon as early next week. Though Kavanaugh currently lacks the votes to be confirmed, the GOP leader is signaling that he will hold the vote anyway to force all 100 senators to go on record and put maximum pressure on red state Democrats that the GOP is hoping to defeat this fall, Republican senators said.

Whether that vote is successful remains in doubt, the senators said.

“Once we get a chance to have a hearing then we’ll figure out where we go from there. I think our members are taking this very seriously,” said Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 3 Republican. “Most of our members are going to wait ‘til Thursday … Thursday is kind of the key day in this.”

“Let’s wait and see what happens on Thursday. I am very supportive of Judge Kavanaugh, but I want to hear her testimony,” added Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.).

The tension inside the Senate GOP Conference was palpable on Monday after a weekend filled with new sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh, which came amid furious negotiations between the Judiciary Committee and Ford’s legal team over her appearance.

Some pro-Kavanaugh hardliners like Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Orrin Hatch of Utah and Tom Cotton of Arkansas want the GOP to forge ahead and jam Kavanaugh through in spite of the allegations from Ford and Deborah Ramirez, who told the New Yorker that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her in college. They and others worry about the precedent that would be set for future nominees if the GOP abandons Kavanaugh.

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas), who serves on the Judiciary Committee, said the panel could vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination as early as Friday, although he noted no final decision has been made to do so yet. Such a plan signals that Kavanaugh will get a vote in committee regardless of what happens Thursday, and McConnell can bring the nominee to the floor even if he receives an unfavorable recommendation in committee.

“I’m ready to move forward after the hearing as soon as possible,” Graham declared. “I have no doubt something happened to Ms. Ford. I really don’t know her. What I’ve got before me is unknown time, unknown location, no credible verification. Unless that changes, that’s where I’m at.”

Hatch called the Ramirez story “phony” and said Ford is “sincerely wrong,” predicting the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote later this week. “It’s time to get down to business,” Hatch said.

For McConnell and his leadership team, the road ahead on Kavanaugh is fraught with political peril. The GOP leader does not want to be seen as doing anything to undercut Kavanaugh, but his message has subtly shifted as well. On Friday McConnell confidently predicted his caucus would “plow right through” the sexual assault allegation and put Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court; by Monday, McConnell defended Kavanaugh against a “despicable” smear campaign but committed only to floor vote in the “near future.”

Ford sent Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley a letter saying McConnell’s fiery speech Monday was “inconsistent” with the committee’s appeal toward her.

“[McConnell] thinks he’ll have the votes,” said one Republican senator who speaks to the majority leader regularly. “But he just wants members to know it’s going to the floor.”

A second Republican senator wondered aloud whether the GOP leaders could weather the storm until Thursday’s hearing: “Can they sustain this for three more days?”

Even a failed vote could pay dividends for Republicans, GOP leaders privately say, by forcing Sens. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp to take a position on Kavanaugh. All three have been targeted to support Kavanaugh after supporting Justice Neil Gorsuch, and all hail from deep red states and are up for re-election.

“We’ve talked about Manchin and Donnelly,” said a third GOP senator, who is close to leadership.

This Republican also said the New Yorker story on Ramirez — who claims Kavanaugh exposed himself to her while they were both students at Yale University — has actually helped the nominee with some GOP lawmakers and will “energize the base of Trump voters in a way that hasn’t happened up until now.” The New York Times reported that it could not verify Ramirez’s allegations, and the White House and Senate Republicans used that fact to launch their own political counter-attack, referring to the New Yorker report as a “smear” and “character assassination.”

Yet Republican moderates and two retiring senators have taken a far more deliberative stance on Kavanaugh following the Ford and Ramirez allegations, and they remain the critical bloc of votes to watch for the majority party.

GOP Sens. Jeff Flake of Arizona, Bob Corker of Tennessee, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska are all preaching a thorough process and saying they have an open mind. Collins said the Judiciary Committee needs to interview Ramirez “under oath.”

“I’m eager for the hearing to take place this Thursday and hear from both Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford,” Collins said. “I have not made a decision.”

“As with any allegation out there, it is our responsibility to look into it and treat allegations with the serious consideration they deserve,” Murkowski said.

And it’s not just those four Republicans who are open to being persuaded either way. Several more GOP senators said on Monday that their votes will be determined by how Ford and Kavanaugh perform before the committee.

That raises the stakes even higher: While Kavanaugh could win over undecided senators with strong performance, he could also experience more defections if he stumbles.

Asked if he was still a yes vote, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said: “I want to see what happens in the hearing on Thursday. I can only vote based on the information before me.”

The past 10 days seem to have rattled even some of Kavanaugh’s most ardent supporters. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) was working as Kavanaugh’s sherpa to get him confirmed before being appointed to the Senate after the death of John McCain, but he didn’t want to talk about Kavanaugh at all on Monday as the nomination hung in the balance.

“I don’t have any stand. I’m still working really hard to figure out where to go and how to get there,” said Kyl, who used to be the No. 2 Republican. Asked if something in the Ford hearing could change his mind about Kavanaugh, he replied: “I don’t know. I’m not going to be in the Thursday hearing, I’m not on the Judiciary Committee.”
