What to expect from Erdogan’s Germany visit?

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan heads to Germany in a rare official visit with a busy agenda, ranging from the situation in Syria to the arrest of German citizens, and the currency crisis in the European Union candidate country.

Berlin and Ankara, which have been at odds over a variety of issues for years, recently toned down their rhetoric, signaling a new phase in ties.

Erdogan said his country seeks to improve political and economic relations with Germany during his three-day visit that starts on Thursday.

“Our priority [in my visit] will be completely leaving behind the period experienced in recent years in our political ties,” he said on Sunday.

“In addition, it will be the steps that can be taken to enhance our economic ties on a mutually beneficial basis.”

Erdogan will meet Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Frank Walter Steinmeier during his visit.

Diplomatic flurry

The diplomatic traffic between Berlin and Ankara has already been busy in September.

Early in the month, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas held talks in Turkey with his counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, expressing the desire for closer cooperation.

Last week, Turkish Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, Turkey’s Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan, and Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Sonmez were in Berlin meeting with Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and Economy and Energy Minister Peter Altmaier.

Mensur Akgun, a professor of international relations and a columnist, said the two countries seek to prioritise mutual strategic interests such as Syria and economic ties, rather than their differences.

“The relationship between the two countries is complex with many different aspects from the refugee aspect to entangled economic ties and millions of Turks living in Germany,” he told Al Jazeera.

“The Turkish government understands that Turkey will not be an EU member state anytime soon and seeks to put the relations with the bloc to a more realistic platform. The visit will help achieve this goal. The sides understand it is in their mutual interest to solve their issues,” Akgun added.

Post-coup crackdown

Tensions between the two countries mainly stem from purges and arrests of hundreds of thousands of people in Turkey after a July 2016 coup attempt that killed more than 300 people, including the plotters. German journalists and activists have been among those arrested.

Berlin has called the crackdown arbitrary, while Ankara denies its political influence on the judiciary.

Germany, the country with the largest Turkish diaspora in the world, banned gatherings of foreign politicians and their supporters within its borders before both Turkey’s 2017 constitutional referendum and presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24. Other EU member states, such as the Netherlands and Austria, followed Germany. The move infuriated Turkish authorities.

Turkey and Germany have many reasons to work together. In addition to more than three million people of Turkish origin living in the country, the EU’s industrial locomotive is Turkey’s main economic and trade partner with bilateral trade at 37.6 billion euros ($43.6bn).

Plunging lira

The currency crisis Turkey is going through is also high on the agenda of Erdogan’s visit. The value of the lira has taken a nosedive since the beginning of the year, losing more than 40 percent against the US dollar amid macroeconomic concerns and a diplomatic showdown between Washington and Ankara.

The NATO allies increased tariffs on each other in August after Turkey’s judiciary refused to release an American pastor jailed on “terrorism” charges. Ankara has accused Washington of carrying out an “economic war” against Turkey and said its courts are independent.

Meanwhile, rumours of German financial aid to Turkey in August were denied by German officials.

“Turkey is not seeking economic aid, neither in our talks today nor will it do so in the talks that the president and the chancellor will hold,” Finance Minister Scholz said after meeting his counterpart Albayrak.

Another issue complicating relations is the three million Syrian refugees Turkey hosts, keeping them from journeying to Western Europe. A mass flow of refugees to Europe in 2015 created a massive humanitarian crisis and helped the rise of far-right politics on the continent.

Ankara also wants the EU to allow Turkish citizens to travel to the Schengen area without visas, and seeks German support on this issue.

‘Germany needs a stable Turkey’

Can Baydarol, an analyst on EU-Turkey relations, said it is not in the interests of Germany or the EU to have an unstable Turkey bordering Europe.

“Turkey’s instability would hit the EU both politically and economically. Germany is protecting itself by mending ties with and helping out Turkey. A banking crisis in Turkey would hit European banks and over 6,500 German companies making business in the country. Keeping Syrian refugees in Turkey is also a priority of Germany,” Baydarol said.

“Furthermore, Ankara is drifting from the West towards Russia and Germany is not happy with it. If Russia and Turkey become actual strategic partners, this might create a soft spot in the EU’s defence,” he said.

Ankara signed a deal to purchase S-400 advanced missile defence systems from Moscow last year despite objections from its Western allies. Russia is also building nuclear power plant in Turkey.

Moreover, Russia and Iran, which support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, and Turkey, which backs the moderate opposition, have been in close cooperation to find a solution to the Syrian conflict.

Their cooperation recently stopped a planned Syrian government offensive against the rebel-held province of Idlib and prevented a potential humanitarian disaster involving hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Third Kavanaugh accuser steps forward

Brett Kavanaugh

Julie Swetnick accuses Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of spiking drinks with drugs to “target particular girls so they could be taken advantage of.” | Win McNamee/Getty Images

A third woman stepped forward Wednesday through her attorney to lodge allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, accusing him and a friend of attending house parties where women – including herself – were sexually assaulted.

She specifically accuses Kavanaugh of spiking drinks with drugs to “target particular girls so they could be taken advantage of.”

Story Continued Below

The woman, identified by her attorney, Michael Avenatti as Julie Swetnick, does not accuse Kavanaugh himself of sexually assaulting her in the affidavit. But she wrote that she witnessed him on several occasions “drink excessively and engage in highly inappropriate conduct, including being overly aggressive with girls and not taking ‘No’ for an answer. This conduct included the fondling and grabbing of girls without their consent.”

In the affidavit, Swetnick asserts Kavanaugh was present when she was the victim of a “gang rape” by multiple boys at one party. And she refers to Kavanaugh “a mean drunk” whom she witnessed acting “verbally abusive toward girls, including pressing girls against him without their consent,“ and “Grinding against girls and attempting to remove or shift girls’ clothing to expose private body parts.”

Swetnick is prepared to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Avenatti said, but he charged that the committee had failed to respond to that offer or his offer that Swetnick submit to polygraph testing.

On Wednesday, the committee acknowledged receiving Avenatti’s declaration and a spokesperson said lawyers were reviewing it.

The revelation of his client’s identity came after Avenatti, a hard-charging anti-Trump agitator, was accused in a viral Internet post of actually representing a fraud after being duped by a third party. Since Avenatti first made overtures about representing a Kavanaugh accuser, he said he was the subject of online threats and on Tuesday locked his Twitter account.

Avenatti depicted the episode as an intimidation attempt.

“Here’s my message to Donald Trump, Sen. Grassley, Sen. McConnell and their surrogates: you better be very very careful before you launch some smear campaign against my client who is 100 percent credible,” Avenatti told POLITICO. “Because if you do, I will do everything in my power to expose you for the fraud that you are.”

Avenatti posted on Twitter a photo of his client and her affidavit, and says she is a former government worker who still holds certain security clearances.

Avenatti posted on Twitter a photo of his client and her affidavit, and says she is a former government worker who still holds certain security clearances.

Asked if she would step forward publicly on Wednesday and submit to a media interview, Avenatti told POLITICO: “We’re going to wait and see how the day progresses.”

Avenatti previously told POLITICO he offered her testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee but was rebuffed and added that his client would make her allegations public even if the committee did not allow for her testimony.

“She is courageous, brave and honest. We ask that her privacy and that of her family be respected,” Avenatti wrote over Twitter.

BTS Sing And Dance Their Way Into Jimmy Fallon’s Heart (But He Only Has Eyes For Jimin)

America is finally starting to realize what millions of fans around the globe already know: It’s easy to fall in love with BTS. Just ask Jimmy Fallon. (Or is it Chimmy Fallon?)

The South Korean artists are making the most of their time in New York. With two sold-out shows this weekend at Newark’s Prudential Center — and their historic Citi Field concert on the horizon — the global superstars have made time for select engagements. Following their appearance at the UN earlier in the week, where leader RM delivered an inspiring speech about identity, the septet stopped by The Tonight Show on Tuesday night (September 25), and it didn’t take the seasoned late-night host very long to become enamored with BTS and their fans.

Throughout the taping, Fallon received a crash course in Bangtan from fans eager to share. From fanchants and ARMY Bombs to BT21 and finger hearts, the effusive host was receptive to all of it, even borrowing a fan’s Chimmy (member Jimin’s BT21 character) headband — and her friend’s ARMY Bomb ring — for the interview segment. The move caught Jimin so off guard, he fell to his knees in laughter. Within minutes Chimmy Fallon started to trend on Twitter.

And the internet’s favorite new bromance was born. (Jimin’s “Hey Jimmy! I’m Jimin!” introduction is one of the cutest things ever, and that’s a fact.)

It’s one thing to invite BTS fans into Studio 6B — many of whom waited overnight, outside in the rain, for a chance of getting standby tickets — and it’s another to actually listen to them, to respect them, and to value them for their insight and expertise. It’s no surprise that the fans’ enthusiasm and Fallon’s willingness to learn were a winning combination.

When asked about their recent visit to the UN and message behind “speak yourself,” RM explained that the phrase is “about speaking for yourself instead of letting other people speak for you.” Meanwhile, V spoke of his affinity for New York City street hotdogs and rapper Suga reiterated his desire to be invited to the Grammys.

In addition to the interview, Fallon also surprised fans with a “Fortnite Dance Challenge” video featuring all seven members — RM, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, and V — mimicking some iconic dance moves from the game, including the Electric Shuffle, Best Mates, and The Worm, and teaching Fallon a bit of “Idol” choreography.

By the time BTS finally took to the stage to perform their hit single “Idol,” a deafening chorus of voices chanting “you can’t stop me lovin’ myself” reverberated around the studio. The energy was electric, prompting Roots drummer and Tonight Show house band leader Questlove to tweet, “I never knew an act in entertainment could still command that kinda frenzy in today’s climate.”

But that’s the thing about BTS. Despite all of that frenzy and their growing visibility in the U.S. and around the globe, they’re still just seven guys from Seoul who like making music together. “We want to stay humble and enjoy the ride,” RM said.

They may be the biggest boy band in the world, but that doesn’t stop them from having fun — and apparently from doing the shoot dance at every conceivable opportunity — and thanks to Fallon, the world finally got to see Bangtan as their fans do: endlessly lovable.

Sassy seal accidentally slaps man across the face with an octopus

It was the slap heard all around New Zealand.

Kyle Mulinder, a self-described “GoPro content creator,” was having a chill time kayaking off the coast of Kaikoura. But suddenly, a seal pops up out of nowhere with an octopus in its mouth, and slaps it against Mulinder’s boat, while also accidentally hitting him in the face with its tentacles.

SEE ALSO: The wilderness has returned to idyllic Cape Cod. That means great white sharks.

Taiyo Masuda, another GoPro videographer managed to capture the entire scene, and posted it on his Instagram. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.

In an interview with Yahoo 7, Mulinder explains that the group was well aware of the fight between the seal and the octopus before he got a face full of tentacle. Apparently the duo were struggling for a while and then briefly disappeared deep beneath the surface, before reappearing again at Mulinder’s kayak.

“He thrashed it in mid fight and my face happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Mulinder told Yahoo 7. “I was like ‘mate, what just happened?’ It was weird because it happened so fast but I could feel all the hard parts of the octopus on my face like ‘dum dum dum.’”

After getting thrown onto the side of the kayak, the octopus clung onto it for dear life. Mulinder was finally able to get it off with the help of his instructor.

According to Mulinder, the octopus was fine after the whole ordeal, and was placed back in the water.

Gotta pick your fights a little more wisely next time, buddy.

Clemson QB Kelly Bryant to Transfer After Being Replaced by Trevor Lawrence

Clemson Tigers quarterback Kelly Bryant will transfer after losing the starting job over the weekend, according to Manie Robinson of the Greenville News.

“I feel like it’s what’s best for me and my future,” Bryant told the Greenville News. “I was just going to control what I could control and try to make the most of my opportunity, but at the end of the day, I just don’t feel like I’ve gotten a fair shot.”

Bryant took over under center after Deshaun Watson moved on to the NFL following the 2016 season, starting all of his games in the last campaign and each of the first four games this season.

He has a 16-2 record as the Tigers’ starter. However, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is opting to go with true freshman Trevor Lawrence over the senior.

As Swinney alluded to, it was a “tough” decision for all parties involved.

“They asked me how I felt about it,” Bryant told The Greenville News. “I was like, ‘I’m not discrediting Trevor. He’s doing everything asked of him, but on my side of it, I feel like I haven’t done anything to not be the starter. I’ve been here. I’ve waited my turn. I’ve done everything y’all have asked me to do, plus more.’

“I’ve never been a distraction. I’ve never been in trouble with anything. To me, it was kind of a slap in the face.”

Following the demotion, the 22-year-old made sure to look out for himself.

“I’ve been with this senior class for four years. Seeing how much we built and poured into this program, it’s tough to walk away from it,” Bryant said, per Robinson. “But at the same time, I’ve got to do what’s best for me. And I feel like this is the best situation for me.”

After the news of Bryant’s impending departure was made public, Swinney made it clear that his decision to change quarterbacks should not be viewed as a “slap in the face.”

“He’s entitled to his opinion, but absolutely I think we’ve given him a fair shot. I always tried to be open, honest and transparent as possible with Kelly,” Swinney said, per USA Today Sports’s Dan Wolken. “This isn’t middle school. There’s tough decisions that have to be made at this level and you have to do what’s best for the team.”

Swinney added, per The Athletic’s Matt Fortuna: “Obviously saddened and disappointed that he’s chosen to leave the team, but I really have absolutely nothing bad that I could say about Kelly Bryant. He’s one of the best young people I’ve ever been around.”

While Bryant may not be happy with the Tigers’ decision, Swinney noted Lawrence had earned the nod.

“We’ve played four games now and it’s a difficult thing, man, it’s a tough day, but it’s just where we are,” Swinney said on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. “I’ve told y’all that many times that if we saw a change, if there was a change, we’d probably all know it, and that’s what happened Saturday. And Kelly didn’t do anything wrong. He played well. But Trevor, after four games, productivity and just the sheer data, he deserves to run out there first this game.”

According to Rittenberg, Bryant was given Monday off and also missed practice on Tuesday.

Bryant is coming off a season in which he led the Tigers to a 12-2 record and an appearance in the College Football Playoff—a 24-6 loss to Alabama in the semifinals.

This year, Bryant had completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 461 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, adding 130 yards and two scores on the ground. Meanwhile, Lawrence has completed 65 percent of his passes for 600 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.

Clemson is 4-0 on the season.

Saudi, UAE officials call for regime change in Iran at US summit

The foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, the ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Washington, and the director of Israel‘s Mossad spy agency have joined ranks in pushing for regime change in Iran.

Speaking alongside US National Security Adviser John Bolton and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir called for the overthrow of the Iranian government, saying the Islamic Republic was unlikely to change on its own volition.

“Unless the pressure internally is extremely intense, I don’t believe they will open up,” Jubeir said at the United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) conference in New York City, which was attended by states that opposed the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

“How can we negotiate with a state that wants to kill us,” Jubeir said in remarks carried by UAE newspaper The National.

Saudi and Emirati officials welcomed Washington’s decision to abandon the 2015 Iran deal – known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – under which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief, it reported.

But Yousef al-Otaiba, the UAE’s ambassador to the US, said external pressure was needed and would be key in changing Iran’s course.

“I think any recalibaration of Iranian foreign policy will come from external policy,” said Otaiba, who added the isolation of Tehran must be backed up by European powers, Asian nations, as well as the United States.

“If a missile is launched at Saudi Arabia and the UAE what will the reaction be and how will we be defended?” he said.

“I ask that hypothetically but it’s not really hypothetical. The Gulf countries, Israel, and the countries in the immediate vicinity are the ones at immediate risk.”

‘Can’t allow another Lebanon’

Warning that Iran was orchestrating a takeover in Yemen, Otaiba said recent UN-led peace talks supposedly exposed Iran’s role in directing the Houthi leadership.

“We have a vested interest in ensuring what happened in Lebanon does not happen in Yemen,” said Otaiba, who blamed Iran for the failed peace talks in Geneva.

The talks, which would have been the first in nearly two years, were scheduled to take place in the Swiss city of Geneva on September 6 but the Houthi delegation failed to arrive, accusing the Saudi-UAE alliance fighting in Yemen of blocking them from travelling.

“Our analysis tells us it was based on instructions from Tehran that they did not turn up,” Otaiba said.

INSIDE STORY: Can the EU bypass US sanctions on Iran? (25:00)

Brian Hook, the State Department’s special representative for Iran, also spoke at the summit and accused Iran of supplying the missiles fired by Houthi rebels into the kingdom and at the UAE.

“We’re accumulating risk in the Middle East by not getting at Iran’s proliferation,” he said.

“There is something brazen about this missile behaviour, they’re not even hiding it. This sort of escalation is deeply concerning and will be met with a swift and decisive response.”

Oil and weapons

Military analysts at IHS Jane have suggested Iran could be aiding the Houthis with parts or technology, but added it would be difficult for Tehran to ship whole missiles to Yemen.

Another possibility, they say, is the missiles were acquired by Yemen from North Korea before the current conflict.

Since its withdrawal from the Iran deal, the Trump administration has slapped biting sanctions on Tehran in order to choke its oil exports – the main source of income for the country.

Some of Tehran’s biggest oil customers appear to have succumbed to the US pressure with India – a major buyer of Iranian oil – cutting down on its imports.

However, top diplomats from France, Britain, Germany, China and Russia have agreed to establish a financial facility in the European Union to facilitate payments for Iranian imports and exports including oil.

Both sides jockeying over evidence ahead of Kavanaugh hearing

Brett Kavanaugh

Jockeying over testimony and evidence comes as pressure is growing from President Donald Trump and party leaders on undecided GOP senators to back Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. | AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin

Congress

Trump calls Kavanaugh ‘a gem’ while the Supreme Court nominee’s accuser gives senators letters her attorneys claim bolster her case.

With the Senate Judiciary Committee preparing for a blockbuster Thursday hearing over sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, both parties are rushing to build their cases — legally and politically.

Attorneys for Christine Blasey Ford, who alleges that Kavanaugh drunkenly assaulted her in high school, submitted affidavits to the Judiciary Committee from her husband and three friends who said Ford told them of the incident, in some cases several years ago. Ford’s attorney will use the affidavits to support her testimony during Thursday’s session.

Story Continued Below

But the Judiciary Committee’s Republicans — who have hired an experienced female sex crimes prosecutor to lead the questioning of Ford and Kavanaugh — have requested a polygraph and therapist’s notes from Ford that were used to underpin her original story in The Washington Post about the 1982 incident. Those materials have yet to be provided to the panel as of Wednesday morning.

And Deborah Ramirez, who alleges that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her while both were students at Yale University, has declined so far to speak to Judiciary Committee staffers abut that incident. Ramirez’s attorneys told the committee in a Wednesday letter obtained by POLITICO that she wants an FBI inquiry as a first step but is willing to testify in the Senate.

Ramirez’s attorney William Pittard wrote to the committee’s bipartisan leadership that GOP staff “thus far has been refused to even speak with” her counsels and instead “has insisted that Ms. Ramirez first ‘provide her evidence’. Respectfully, that demand misunderstands the process.”

Separately, the Judiciary panel on Wednesday released detailed calendars of Kavanaugh’s activity in the spring and summer of 1982, which included references to trips to St. Michael’s, Md., times Kavanaugh was “grounded” and when he went to the beach. There is no explicit reference to the party described by Ford.

The jockeying over testimony and evidence comes as pressure is growing from President Donald Trump and party leaders on undecided GOP senators to back Kavanaugh.

“I might have pushed it through a lot faster,” Trump said of the Kavanaugh nomination on Wednesday at the United Nations, indicating that he didn’t even think there should have been a hearing to review Ford’s allegations. “I know this particular man, Judge Kavanaugh…. He’s a gem. He’s an absolute gem.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) attacked Democrats on Wednesday for declaring that Kavanaugh should not enjoy the presumption of innocence and belittled the strength of the allegations before the Senate: “No corroboration, no supporting evidence before us, just Dr. Ford’s allegations.”

He said that after the committee hears from Ford and Kavanaugh, “then it will be time to vote.”

Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has already scheduled a committee vote on the nomination for Friday. McConnell is planning on keeping the Senate in this weekend so he can begin the process of bringing Kavanaugh’s nomination up for a final vote early next week.

Vice President Mike Pence will be meeting with Senate GOP conservatives during a Wednesday lunch as well.

Senate Democrats blasted the moves by Grassley and McConnell, accusing the GOP leadership of prejudging Ford’s testimony before she’d even made it.

“For Republicans to schedule a Friday vote on Brett Kavanaugh today, two days before Dr. Blasey Ford has had a chance to tell her story, is outrageous,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, top Democrat on Judiciary, in a Monday statement.

“First Republicans demanded Dr. Blasey Ford testify immediately. Now Republicans don’t even need to hear her before they move ahead with a vote.”

Feinstein added: “It’s clear to me that Republicans don’t want this to be a fair process.”

But first comes Thursday’s critical hearing, and that’s shaping up to be an emotionally wrenching moment for the two people directly involved.

The hearing will offer each senator only five minutes each to question Ford, then Kavanaugh. Senators will be able to defer to counsel for their questions if they choose. Democrats had hoped for more time.

The affidavits submitted by Ford state that she did not tell her husband, Russell, about the alleged incident until they both attended a therapy session in 2012.

Since that time, Ford has told other friends about her interactions with Kavanaugh, three of whom submitted statements to the Judiciary Committee.

Adela Gildo-Mazzon, who has been friends with Ford for a decade, told the panel that Ford disclosed the encounter during a June 2013 meal.

“She said that she had been almost raped by someone who was now a federal judge,” wrote Gildo-Mazzon, whose children attend elementary school with Ford’s. “She told me she had been trapped in a room with two drunken guys, and that she then escaped, ran away, and hid.”

Keith Koegler, who says he has known Ford and her husband for more than five years, told the panel that Ford disclosed what happened to her while they were “standing together in a public place watching our children play together.”

Koegler said Ford mentioned the assault to him again in an email on June 29, 2018, two days after Justice Anthony Kennedy resigned and before Kavanaugh was picked to take his place.

“She wrote me an email in which she stated that the person who assaulted her in high school was the President’s ‘favorite for SCOTUS,’” Koegler said.

Koegler responded: “I remember you telling me about him, but I don’t remember his name.

Do you mind telling me so I can read about him?” Ford answered back: “Brett Kavanaugh.”

Rebecca White, Ford’s neighbor, said Ford told her of the alleged attack in 2017.

“She then told me that when she was a young teen, she had been sexually assaulted by an older teen,” White said. “I remember her saying that her assailant was now a federal judge.”

Childish Gambino Reportedly Postpones This Is America Tour After Injury

Ethan Miller/WireImage

As of a few days ago, Donald Glover was out on tour, en route to hit 18 cities across the U.S. and Canada apparently as his last hurrah under the moniker Childish Gambino. But a reported foot injury has left Gambino unable to complete the rest of the tour, for now anyway.

Over the weekend, his show in Dallas was seemingly cut short due to his injury. Now, Fam Rothstein, one of Glover’s creative partners, has taken to Twitter to clarify that the nine remaining This Is America dates have been “postponed, not cancelled,” Billboard points out.

The first date affected is Wednesday night (September 26)’s gig at The Forum in Inglewood, California, which venue organizers announced on Twitter. Details of the injury are still unconfirmed, though TMZ reported that Glover might’ve suffered a broken foot.

Before the injury, Glover took time during his Chicago tour stop to honor fellow musician Mac Miller, who died earlier this month. “He was so nice. Y’all don’t know, like, he was the sweetest guy,” he said before launching into “Riot.” “A lot of critics were like, ‘Yo, this corny-ass white dude,’ just like they’re like, ‘Yo, this corny-ass black dude.’ And we used to talk, and this kid, he just loved music.”

Whatever the nature of his injury, Glover seems to be taking some time to get better before he ventures back out to close the live-performance chapter in Childish Gambino’s career. At the start of 2018, at the Grammys, Glover was asked if he was really retiring the Gambino persona, and he said he was.

“I stand by that,” he said at the time. “I’m really appreciative of this. I’m still making another project right now. … But I like endings. I think they’re important to progress.”

Stephen Colbert brilliantly breaks down Trump’s laugh-filled UN appearance

When the president is literally laughed at during an appearance in front of the United Nations General Assembly, you know it’s gonna be fodder for Stephen Colbert.

“Don’t worry, Mr. President, they’re not laughing at you,” Colbert quipped. “They’re laughing with each other at you.”

SEE ALSO: Trump claims he wanted the UN to laugh at his speech, calls it ‘great’

Colbert delightedly ran through the rest of Trump’s disastrous appearance at the UN on Tuesday, showing clips of the attacks the president made on other countries and proclaiming, “He’s working the room like an insult comic.”

Colbert also couldn’t help pointing out the Kim Jong Un was the only world leader Trump praised — spiking it with the punchline, “Putin is gonna be jealous!” He also compared Trump’s speech to a marriage-hating wedding guest’s toast.

Good on Colbert for finding a way to wring some laughs out of this situation because if he didn’t, we’d all be crying.
