Mandy Moore, Lili Reinhart, More Celebs Praise Christine Blasey Ford After Senate Hearing

On Thursday (September 27), the country watched with bated breath as Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding Ford’s accusation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school. Since Ford came forward earlier this month, two more women have accused him of sexual misconduct; he has denied all of the allegations.

Ford said during Thursday’s hearing that she is “100 percent” certain Kavanaugh was the man who assaulted her. “I am here today not because I want to be. I am terrified,” she told the committee.

As the hours-long hearing unfolded, celebrities communicated their feelings of frustration, as well as their awe of Ford, on social media. Rami Malek thanked Ford for her “tremendous strength and bravery,” while Mandy Moore called her a “hero,” adding, “I believe Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and I stand in awe of her bravery and fortitude on behalf of all who have been in her shoes.” Ashley Tisdale observed, “Thank you Christine Ford. … It’s so easy to walk away but you stood up.”

Lena Dunham acknowledged how difficult it was for many people — especially those who are victims of sexual assault — to watch the hearing. “The news today is painful for so many and for so many reasons. Please remember to stop and care for yourself, even if it’s three of the deepest breaths. You are loved. Take care,” she tweeted.

Actress Busy Phillips, meanwhile, vowed to stand behind Ford as she revealed on Instagram that she was raped as a teenager. “It’s taken me 25 years to say those words,” she wrote. “I wrote about it in my book. I finally told my parents and sister about it 4 months ago. Today is the day we are silent no more. All of us. I’m scared to post this. I can’t imagine what Dr. Ford is feeling right now.”

Facebook continues to go after YouTube with new video ad options

It’s increasingly clear that Facebook is viewing YouTube as a major competitor.

In a blog post today, Facebook once again demonstrated its focus on video, with an announcement concerning the rollout of more video ad options. It’s a response to advertiser demand for even more control over where video advertisements are shown, the company said. These new options borrow heavily from some of YouTube’s very own video advertising models.

SEE ALSO: Facebook Pages can now join Facebook Groups

The first new video ad option coming from Facebook is called In-Stream Reserve, which will “allow advertisers to reach people watching video from a selection of the most engaging, highest quality publishers and creators.” Basically, Facebook is allowing advanced ad space buyouts from only its best performing video makers. The audiences for these video ads are U.S.-based and are verified by Nielsen.

In-Stream Reserve Categories is a sub-option to further customize In-Stream Reserve video ad campaigns, allowing “advertisers to choose content packages in specific categories, including sports, fashion/beauty and entertainment, bought in the same way as In-Stream Reserve.” If you’re advertising a line of makeup and only want to advertise on makeup tutorials and other beauty-related content, for instance, In-Stream Reserve Categories will allow you to do so.

If Facebook’s In-Stream Reserve video options sound familiar, it’s because YouTube has a similar program called Google Preferred. Google Preferred offers advertisers the option to advertise on the top 5% of content on YouTube. It also breaks down its most popular YouTube channels into a dozen categories you can run ads on.

The second video ad option Facebook is rolling out is called ThruPlay. According to Facebook, ThruPlay “allows advertisers to optimize and pay only for ads that are watched to completion, or for at least 15 seconds.” ThruPlay is also available through Facebook’s video placement network, which includes “Facebook, Instagram and Audience Network, which includes in-stream, stories and feed.”

The ThruPlay video ad model sounds very much like YouTube’s skippable ad format, TrueView. In its post, Facebook mentions that the video placement for ThruPlay video ads are in-feed, and thus, skippable when scrolling past, which can become very cost effective for advertisers.

One more interesting nugget of information in the announcement is Facebook’s test run of exclusive advertisers for specific, original shows on Facebook Watch. This testing is being run on Watch shows like Ball in the Family, Returning the Favor, and Red Table Talk.

Just this past August, Facebook launched Facebook Watch on a global scale. The social media giant has really been pushing its video content offerings, encouraging pages to launch Watch shows, and even enticing YouTube creators to create content for their video platform.

This latest announcement is just another step in Facebook’s campaign to take on YouTube as the place the internet goes to watch video content.

Google Search turns 20, but will we every fully trust it?

Google Search is 20 years old today. Judging by the Google Doodle and recent feature upgrades, Google would like the day to be a celebration of how the company’s algorithms have evolved over the years, cementing its position as the dominant player in the space.

But, more than ever, tech doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Google Search is turning 20 in a time where the public is questioning both our relationship with technology and the fundamental principles and motivations of the companies building it. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter have borne most of the criticism, but Google has been a target as well.

SEE ALSO: Acer Chromebook Tab 10 review: One big step for Chrome OS

Criticisms of Google Search usually go like this: someone sees what they deem as unfair results in either search or tools like autocomplete, with the suggestion being that Google is skewing the “pure” results to show bad things about one side of a group or issue and good things about the other.

Lately such speculative criticism has come mostly from conservatives, but liberals have hammered Google over it as well. In particular, in the lead-up to the 2016 election, supporters of Bernie Sanders suggested a conspiracy to filter results unfavorable to Hillary Clinton to help her win her primary race over Sanders.

On a recent appearance on Fox Business, I spoke to some panelists who pointed out the incident Google had unfairly produced a result that linked the California GOP with Nazism. The panel suggest that Google, as a tech company based in the heart of Silicon Valley (an area that overwhelmingly favored for Hillary Clinton in the last election), had a bias against conservatives and that may have influenced the result.

While I suggested there is often a technical reason for odd or incorrect results — and that I highly doubt there was a room in Mountain View where Google executives could stick their heads in when they wanted to change search results to favor a certain point of view — most appeared unconvinced.

In a way, the criticism is validation for Google — these complaints about Search would be happening if nobody used it. But Google’s enviably high perch atop the search market means it has responsibilities, too, and now more than ever the feature it needs to care most about is integrity.

Luckily, it knows that, or at least seems to. I recently sat down with Google Vice President Nick Fox, the product and design lead for Search, to talk about the state of Google’s core service, and I asked him about how Google ensures the fairness of Search.

How Google Search evolves

It all starts with Google’s guidelines for search, Fox explained. The guidelines are a 164-page document that represents Google’s “value judgments” as to how search should work, mostly having to do with providing the best user experience in matching the search terms to web pages.

“It’s our expression of how we think the Search product should work,” said Fox. “The reason it’s public is because we want to be very transparent about how we think Search should work and what we think ideal Search is.”

Whenever Google makes a change to its search algorithm, the new results are judged by how they adhere to the guidelines. But it’s not technically Google that’s doing the judging — the company hires outside contractors called raters to evaluate changes, and they’re not just a bunch of engineers in Northern California.

“The raters that we hire are across the US, across the world,” said Fox. “We try to make sure the raters represent as much as we can a cross-section of society. It’s important to us that search works for everyone, and no individual’s point of view can influence what that looks like.”

If, say, a Google employee or executive wanted to change how Search worked to favor or eliminate certain results, Fox says the request would have to go through the same public request system that everyone in the world must use, and then the change would have to survive the rater process.

“There is a process by which anyone in the world can report bad results. Whether it’s internal or external, everyone has to report bad results to the exact same mechanism.”

However, not every change to search results involves changing the algorithm. Google Search sometimes “edits” links out of results because of various laws. For example, if a search would have surfaced copyrighted content that’s been posted illegally, a search results page might note that some links weren’t shown because there were claims against them regarding the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Depending on the region or the specific law or policy being enforced, a note explaining the change may or may not appear.

The bigger takeaway, however — and the one that fuels search-editing conspiracy theories — is that those situations show there is a tool for eliminating bad or undesirable links that doesn’t involve an algorithm change. Fox admitted there was a “separate process” for that, but he did say Google had “incredibly strong safeguards” against any individual altering search results, including documenting of every change (although not all of that documentation is public).

He also said, as a matter of philosophy, Google prefers algorithmic changes over editing results.

“As much as we can, we endeavor to change things in an algorithmic way. If we do see a bad result, it’s likely the case that there’s something more systemic going on that needs to be fixed. There’s probably a whole class of results that needs to be addressed.”

The FUD continues

Fox’s responses were helpful, although there’s no way for Google to allay every fear of search manipulation without fully revealing its algorithms and providing full, public documentation of all changes to search, algorithmic or otherwise. Of course, it would never do that, for many reasons — partly because it would give a huge advantage to Google’s competitors, but it would also be a gold rush for link farms, spammers, or anyone looking to game the system.

And Google’s record on Search isn’t exactly spotless. Years ago, in a bid to boost engagement on its Facebook competitor, Google+, Google began to favor official Google+ pages of companies in search results over Facebook pages.

Google+, of course, is all but gone, but now Google must contend with new challenges: tech-savvy bad actors looking to spread fake news and propaganda and an increasingly polarized public that’s constantly looking for evidence of bias from either side.

Given that reality, and the fact that Google’s process will never be 100 percent transparent, the conspiracy theories will continue, something CEO Sundar Pichai will have to contend with when he testifies on Capitol Hill later this fall. And Google presses on, launching a suite of new search tools and integrating AI more deeply in Search — it won’t just be linking terms or synonyms to topics, but also their fundamental concepts, so when you Google “why does my TV look weird” the engine knows you want troubleshooting tips or a manual.

It’s great stuff, and may even take Search to heretofore unheard-of levels of usefulness, getting us to spend even more time using Google’s products. But what Google may or may not realize is that whenever it asks for more engagement, it’s also asking for more trust. For a public burned by so many tech scandals, there’s not a lot left to give.

Shane Dawson almost breaks in ‘The Dark Side of Jake Paul’

Shane Dawson released the second episode of his Jake Paul docu-series, and … things don’t look so good.

The Dark Side of Jake Paul opens with a scene from one of Paul’s vlogs. Dawson looks into how Paul treats his Team 10 roommates, showing a clip of him pranking fellow YouTuber Tessa Brooks with the “buried alive prank.”

SEE ALSO: Shane Dawson’s Jake Paul docuseries is already a wild ride

Smothering her in blankets while she sleeps and blasting siren noises, Paul wakes Tessa up by convincing her she’s in the back of an ambulance with a serious injury.

It’s not the first, and definitely not the last, time that Paul has brushed off cruelty as “just a joke.”

In The Dark Side of Jake Paul, Dawson interviews YouTuber and clinical therapist Kati Morton about what defines a sociopath.

“If anybody could tell me what to look for, it would be you,” he tells her.

Describing sociopaths as a “rollercoaster,” Morton explains typical characteristics that somebody with antisocial personality disorder might embody: They’re charming enough to “woo your grandma” but will end up being manipulative, tend to break rules, and will act impulsively.

“If you’re around people like this, if you sense what I sense about them, it’s like a pit in your stomach,” she says. “They have no empathy.”

As she dives into sociopathic traits, the episode cuts to scenes from the Paul brothers’ videos. When discussing the tendency to mimic socially acceptable behaviors instead of understanding them, Dawson cuts to the infamous Laura Lee apology video

“If they’re mimicking,” Morton says. “They’re honing their craft. So if they’re not good at it, they won’t illicit the right response.”

Although the series has been widely hailed as a fascinating look into what it means to be a YouTuber, some Twitter users weren’t impressed by the way Dawson has approached discussing mental illnesses. They criticized him for “demonizing” people with mental illness, and said that Morton’s sweeping generalizations of people with antisocial personality disorder were unfair, since not everyone who has it is as inherently evil as she depicts them to be.

god,,,,, Shane’s series about Jake Paul is the most cursed thing in the world how about we not alienate and start a huge witch hunt to ‘out’ people with mental illnesses?

— Sonic The Friendhog (@SiobhanxMurphy) September 27, 2018

someone in my life has antisocial personality disorder (aka what everyone considers to be sociopathy) and let me tell u fuck shane dawson splicing dr phil quotes w pictures of serial killers the more i think abt this the angrier i get

— ellie (@hellpope) September 27, 2018

-a complete idea of a person; they’re plastic qualities that can be applied to ANYONE at all and it’s unbelievably frustrating bc she does nothing to actually help identify a sociopath. Not to mention, she contradicts herself constantly in her descriptions and makes-

— kait🌈 (@mylifeaskaitDIY) September 27, 2018

-these qualities that can be seen in tons of people seem even MORE general and by doing so creates MORE fear. Yes, sociopaths can be awful people, but they are not all awful people in the way she is framing them. This shit is so harmful and disgusting, I’m fuming.

— kait🌈 (@mylifeaskaitDIY) September 27, 2018

i wanna like shane dawson but demonizing mental illness is…….not a good look

— cait (@ShyVibrance) September 27, 2018

Even Shane takes a moment to reflect on his own mental health: “The more I help people, the worse I’m getting. And this experience with Jake … this very much feels like the breaking point to realize that, maybe it’ll be good to realize that I can’t help him.”

“I’m spiraling,” he says, realizing that what she described defines so many people in his life. “Anybody could be a sociopath. Anybody.”

In Part 3, Dawson will take a look at the Paul family and all of their fucked-up antics. Stay tuned.

Watch Lindsey Graham explode in a tirade at the Kavanaugh hearing

Https%3a%2f%2fvdist.aws.mashable.com%2fcms%2f2018%2f9%2fbf55bd40 3476 a527%2fthumb%2f00001

Someone might want to check on Senator Lindsey Graham.

He lashed out at Democrats during Brett Kavanaugh’s appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday. In an eye-popping and lengthy tirade, Graham called Christine Blasey Ford’s sexual assault allegations against the Supreme Court candidate “the most unethical sham since [he’s] been in politics.”

Graham, who is not the first angry man to take the mic today, told Kavanaugh directly that he had “nothing to apologize for.” He also accused Senate Democrats of using Ford as a pawn in an attempt to destroy Kavanaugh, then push through their own candidate after the midterm elections.

(He did not, however, mention the myriad reasons why sexual assault victims might hesitate to come forward, nor the fact that Ford requested confidentiality when she first revealed her experience to Senator Dianne Feinstein.)

Of course, Graham yelled for 100 percent of his statement. Big day for men yelling.

The Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly sought Ben Simmons in a potential Jimmy Butler trade with the Philadelphia 76ers

Appearing on The Bill Simmons Podcast on Thursday, The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor explained just how high the Timberwolves’ asking price is for their disgruntled shooting guard: “One of the things that I’ve heard from a handful of sources is that—with the Sixers for example—the initial offer that they made, the counter-offer was like, ‘We need Ben Simmons in a deal.’”

On Twitter, you won’t scroll for long before you see the hashtags #WeBelieveSurvivors, #CancelKavanaugh, and #BelieveChristine. They are notes of solidarity directed toward Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, one of the women who has come forward with sexual assault allegations concerning Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. On Thursday, Ford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about those allegations.

In addition to the support on social media, people have gathered for demonstrations nationwide. In Washington D.C., the day began with a Women’s March Rally in front of the Supreme Court and solidarity circles inside a Senate building office building.

“Today is the day we say enough is enough! Sexual violence has no place in our society. Not in Hollywood. Not in domestic work. And not in the highest court in the land. Brett Kavanaugh should withdraw now,” Daniela Contreras, a sexual assault survivor and organizer with the National Domestic Workers Alliance, said in a statement.

“We are grateful for the bravery of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford,” she added. “Her courage should not be in vain.”

Many wore black to show solidarity — the Women’s March instructed protesters to do so on their website called cancelkavanaugh.com, which gives protesters and activists the tools and resources to try and stop Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Protesters also wore black on Monday during the Time’s Up walkouts honoring Ford.

Actress and #MeToo activist Alyssa Milano attended the hearing, as did Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who brought  her 5-month-old daughter.

Maile & I just said thank you to the women, supporters&survivors who came to DC today to show support for #DrBlaseyFord, who has been so brave by coming forward to share her story. One of the leaders of the #MeToo movement, Tarana Burke, was, according to CNN, also in the room as Ford testified. She wore a handmade sticker that said, “Believe women.”

The mandate was echoed throughout Thursday’s  demonstrations.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas: ‘Jerusalem is not for sale’

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas spoke in harsh and unflinching terms about Israel and the US at the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, while Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used the platform to once again brand the Iran nuclear deal a “lie”.

Abbas began his address by stating that “Jerusalem is not for sale”, drawing applause from the room. He then turned to denouncing in turn Israel’s “racist” nation state law, the Trump administration’s uncritical support of Israel, and both states’ refusal to abide by international agreements and UN resolutions.

Abbas seeks alternative to US as peace mediator

“This law will inevitably lead to the creation of one racist state, an apartheid state, and thus nullifies the two-state solution,” he said.

In his first speech to the UN since the US moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Abbas said Palestinians now see the US “with new eyes” and no longer as a fair mediator in the peace process.

“This administration has reneged on all previous US commitments and undermined the two state solution,” he said.

The PLO leader called on more countries to recognise the state of Palestine and for the UN to enforce the resolutions it has passed on Israel.

“It is insufficient for the general assembly to pass a reinstitution without implementation,” he said, saying that Israel had not implemented even one of the over 700 resolution passed by the assembly since 1949.

Abbas raised the issue of UNRWA, which provides relief and humanitarian assistance to over five million Palestinians, and is battling for survival since the US pulled $300m in funding for the organisation.

He accused the US of attempting to “obliterate” UNRWA, and rubbished its estimate that there are only 40,000 Palestinian refugees.

He reiterated several times that the PLO is fully committed to peace and rejects all forms of violence outright, but stressed that cooperation was a two-way street and Palestine would not be bound by agreements that are reneged on by other countries.

Concluding, Abbas paid tribute to martyrs and prisoners and said to all Palestinians that “we are soon approaching our day of freedom and independence and that the darkness of occupation will soon vanish.”

Netanyahu targets Iran

Speaking shortly after, Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu used his address to publicly identify what he claims is a secret, previously unknown nuclear facility in Tehran.

Holding up a printed satellite photo with geographic coordinates, he encouraged the public to use Google Maps to locate the site for themselves as proof that Iran has been dishonest about its nuclear ambitions.

He claimed that Israeli intelligence found Iranian authorities had disposed of 15kg of nuclear material across Tehran, exposing residents to dangerous radioactivity.

Calling on the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency by name, he asked Yukiya Amano to investigate the facility “right here, right now”.

“I will never let a regime that calls for our destruction to develop nuclear weapons. Not now, not in 10 years, not ever,” he said, calling on European leaders to join the US and other in abandoning the Iran deal.

He accused EU states of “appeasement” and “rolling out the red carpet” for Iranian president Hassan Rouhani as he expands his military influence in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere.

Netanyahu praised the thousands of Iranians who have take to the streets in recent months to protest the government and its response to an economic crisis resulting in dramatic rises in inflation and unemployment.

“The people of Iran are bravely standing up to a regime that has oppressed them for four decades and squanders their money in bloody wards across the Middle East,” said the Israeli leader.

The only positive result of the Iran deal, he claimed, was bringing Israel and several Arab states “closer together than ever before in an intimacy and friendship that I’ve not seen in my lifetime and would have been unimaginable a few years ago”.

Netanyahu then called for a brief round of applause for US president Donald Trump and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley for their unwavering support of Israel before defending at length the nation state law from the accusations of Abbas, human rights organisations and the international community.

Claims that Israel is racist or an apartheid state are “shameful” and simply “antisemitism with a band new face,” he claimed, before branding his Palestinian counterpart a Holocaust denier.

Regardless of the new legislation, Jews and non-Jews enjoy equal individual rights in Israel, he said.”

‘Same sort of speeches’

“We have got the same sort of speeches now for quite a few years,” said Yossi Mekelberg, Professor of International Relations at Regent’s University London, referring to the speeches by the Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

“Netanyahu concentrates on Iran because that where he’s comfortable and confident about what he’s saying, and he’s comfortable with the support of the US in the region,” he told Al Jazeera.

“He tries to minimise talking about Palestinian issues because he know that he is in a very small minority in the UN.

“For Abbas, the cutting of the money to UNRWA, the moving of the American embassy to Jerusalem, it’s all going in one direction. The US can’t even be seen as an honest broker in peace negotiations… It’s obviously not something the PA can accept.”

Elizabeth Tsurkov, a Research Fellow at the Forum for Regional Thinking, said Abbas’ wish for more international mediation would likely not be forthcoming.

“European and other nations that may play a constructive role in this context are focused on their own domestic concerns or more pressing international crises, relegating the Palestinian issue to the back-burner,” she said.

“This means a continuation of military rule over the Palestinian people and the daily humiliations and human rights abuses this rule entails.”
