Canada strips Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi of honorary citizenship

Canada strips Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi of honorary citizenship

Canada’s parliament has unanimously voted to strip Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi of her honorary citizenship over her handling of the Rohingya crisis.

Thursday’s vote came a week after Canadian lawmakers approved a motion recognising the crimes committed against Rohingya Muslims as genocide.

Aung San Suu Kyi received the honour from Ottawa in 2007, when she was a democracy advocate long under house arrest. But the Myanmar leader has been under fire for her failure to condemn the military campaign that has driven more than 700,000 Rohingya into neighbouring Bangladesh in what the UN human rights chief called “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing”.

Canadian parliament’s decision to revoke the symbolic honour was due to a “persistent refusal to denounce the Rohingya genocide”, said Adam Austen, spokesman for Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland.

“We will continue to support the Rohingya by providing humanitarian assistance, imposing sanctions against Myanmar’s generals and demanding that those responsible be held accountable before a competent international body,” said Austen.

Lawmaker Gabriel Ste Marie, who proposed the motion, told reporters he thought the vote was “a great symbol”.

Member of Parliament Salma Zahid called Aung San Suu Kyi’s “unwillingness to take any moral leadership … inexcusable, and deeply disappointing”.

Parliament just unanimously agreed to revoke the honorary Canadian citizenship of Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi. Her unwillingness to take any moral leadership for the genocide of the Rohingya in her country is inexcusable, and deeply disappointing.

Rights organisations have accused Myanmar military of committing extrajudicial killings, gang rape, and arson during their bloody campaign launched in August last year after army posts came under attack from Rohingya fighters.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya now live in cramped refugee camps in Bangladesh, fearful of returning home despite a repatriation deal.

Andrew Leslie, serving as Freeland’s parliamentary secretary, said “the machinery of government will chew over the details of what specifically is required to implement” the motion.

Only five others have been given honorary citizenship in Canada, including the Dalai Lama, Malala Yousafzai and Nelson Mandela.

Can the US and China resolve their differences?

Washington and Beijing have been at loggerheads in recent months – from an escalating trade war to a military and political standoff.

Addressing permanent members of the UN Security Council, including France, Russia and Britain, President Donald Trump said China was trying to interfere in the crucial US mid-term elections scheduled to be held in November.

Without providing any evidence, he said Beijing did not want Republican party to win.

The Chinese foreign minister promptly rejected those claims – calling them ‘unwarranted accusations’.

So, can the world’s two biggest economies put aside their differences?

Colbert unpacks Christine Blasey Ford’s ‘heartbreaking’ testimony at Kavanaugh hearing

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert has unpacked what he dubbed “one of the longest days I can remember— and keep in mind I’ve been to a Renaissance fair.”

In two monologues, Colbert unpacked Christine Blasey Ford’s “deeply moving … believable and heartbreaking” testimony against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and then, the rage-filled statement from Kavanaugh himself.

“He came out with a well-coiffed head of steam,” Colbert said, showing a clip of Kavanaugh’s angry testimony.

“Clearly Kavanaugh thought he already faced his Senate grilling, and was upset he was being subjected to more.”

Colbert hit the nail on the head, referring to Thursday as “the most divisive day in America since Laurel and Yanny, if Yanny was trying to get on the Supreme Court and Laurel had some really disturbing stories to tell about him.”

No matter what happens now, history’s judgment on Kavanaugh is already clear.

Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors: Rockets Making ‘Strong Effort’ for Star

The Houston Rockets came within one victory of reaching the NBA Finals last season, and they reportedly have their eyes on one of the best two-way players in the league as they attempt to close the gap with the Golden State Warriors.

According to Mark Berman of Fox 26 in Houston, Houston is “making a strong effort to land Jimmy Butler in a trade.”

The immediate future of the Minnesota Timberwolves swingman is a central talking point across the league as the 2018-19 campaign approaches, and Houston is apparently making a push to bolster a roster that already includes James Harden, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Clint Capela.

Trading for Butler wouldn’t be easy for the Rockets considering they are more than $32.6 million over the salary cap, per Spotrac, with significant money tied up in Paul, Harden and Capela, among others.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN said the team has “tried to be creative in its pursuit” and called it a “challenge” but “not impossible” for the Rockets to land him without looping in a third team on a potential deal.

Butler is on the market after Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic reported Sept. 19 he met with Timberwolves head coach and president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau and requested a trade. According to Wojnarowski, the two had another meeting Monday where Thibodeau—who also coached Butler on the Chicago Bulls—attempted to change his mind to no avail.

While he could be moved, Wojnarowski and colleague Zach Lowe reported earlier Thursday that Minnesota’s asking price “remains too steep for teams.”

He would be a valuable addition on the court for the Rockets considering his ability to impact the game as a scorer or defender. He is a two-time All-NBA selection, four-time All-Defensive selection and four-time All-Star who can serve as an offensive leader (22.2 points per game last season) or defend the opponent’s best player.

Butler would take the defensive pressure off Harden and Paul and allow them to assert their will even more on the offensive end. He could also defend Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and perhaps even Kevin Durant during critical late-game possessions in a potential playoff showdown with the Warriors.

Butler has a player option on his contract for 2019-20 and can become a free agent next offseason, but that may not deter the Rockets since they are in the middle of a win-now, competitive window.

Even if they can’t re-sign him long term, he would bolster their chances at taking the next step in 2018-19 and winning the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

No, it’s not Regina George from Mean Girls.

It’s a picture of 16-year-old Namibian model Clarisse Muller, who has got the internet talking because she looks pretty much identical to the character, played by Rachel McAdams, in the hit 2004 film.

Muller’s image was posted by a teen magazine called Afterbreak, who suddenly found their tweet going viral because of Muller’s doppelganger looks. The magazine’s website also crashed because of the immense attention their photo received.

This month we chat with Miss Teen Namibia 2018 1st Runner Up, Clasrisse Muller. An inspirational teen with an incredible mission.

Muller recently was named the first runner up in Miss Teen Namibia 2018, but aside from that, she isn’t too carried away by this newfound lookalike attention — or doesn’t seem like she runs the meanest, most popular group at school.

“At first I thought it was weird but I soon got used to it and it’s actually fun,” she told BuzzFeed.

You’d be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Snapchat’s new mission: getting you to buy more stuff

Snapchat is making it easier to buy stuff in its app.

As Instagram prepares to challenge Amazon, Snapchat is also getting deeper into the retail game — by making it easier to buy and sell stuff in its app.

The app is introducing a new type of ad that will make it easier for users to buy products inside of its app. The new ads, called Collections, allow brands to link to their products without the need for users to swipe up on the ad.

SEE ALSO: The future of Google search looks a lot like social media

Collections will appear in the app between users’ Stories, as well as in the app’s Discover section. The new format, along with other advertising tools Snap just unveiled, will make it much easier for businesses to entice consumers to go from viewing photos to actually buying.

“We expect these ads to have a significantly higher engagement rate,” says Pete Sellis, Snap’s head of monetization. Sellis says the company has been testing the ads for a few weeks, and that early results have been promising.

In another significant update, Snap added a new feature that allows people to shop for items on Amazon by pointing the Snapchat camera at object around them.

The details of that arrangement aren’t clear; Snap hasn’t commented on whether it receives the usual commission from Amazon purchases made via its app. But the intent of that update is the same as the new Snap ads: to get us comfortable with the idea of shopping and buying via an app better known for self-destructing photos.

Instagram has also been investing more in in-app shopping. The Facebook-owned app has been experimenting with linked ads in its feed and, more recently, in Stories. It just recently began letting brands add shopping links inside of its Stories posts. Instagram is also said to be exploring another dedicated e-commerce app that could compete directly with Amazon.

The new shopping-focused updates come at a critical time for Snap. The app has faced some recent declines in users, though it is still incredibly popular among teens, a coveted audience for many advertisers.

If Snapchat can successfully cast itself as their preferred communications platform and an actual shopping destination, that could boost its standing in the eyes of investors — and bring in a lot more ad revenue.

Kavanaugh says he didn’t even watch Dr. Ford’s testimony

2018%2f04%2f02%2f74%2fheadshot.edeb7By Morgan Sung

Yes, you read that headline right.

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified before the Senate on Thursday about Kavanaugh’s alleged sexual assault.

SEE ALSO: Congrats to Brett Kavanaugh on getting to be angry

Later during the hearing, Senator Kamala Harris asked Kavanaugh, “Did you watch Dr. Ford’s testimony?”

“I did not,” Kavanaugh admitted. “I planned to, but I did not. I was preparing mine.”

Americans were both furious and unconvinced that Kavanaugh claimed he didn’t watch his accuser’s testimony.

Kavanaugh says he didn’t watch Ford’s testimony but that he plans to. In ’91, Thomas told the committee that he didn’t watch Hill’s testimony, which prompted frustration from even some of his defenders on the panel.

— Steve Kornacki (@SteveKornacki) September 27, 2018

in 5 minutes @KamalaHarris established that #Kavanaugh:

– has not taken a polygraph

– won’t call for FBI investigation

– didn’t watch Ford’s testimony

– faced same vet as Gorsuch

– concedes that treating some women well doesn’t preclude a man from doing ill to others

— Jesse Lehrich (@JesseLehrich) September 27, 2018

Wow. Kavanaugh didn’t even watch Blasey Ford’s testimony. He doesn’t care what she said. She’s close to irrelevant to him.

— Sarah O’Simpson (@TheViewFromLL2) September 27, 2018

Oh I think he did. That’s why he was so enraged when he started his testimony. Just another lie from him

— Nessie_Nu 🦖 (@nessie_nu) September 27, 2018

When Brett Kavanaugh didn’t watch Dr. Ford’s testimony, did he not watch it with Mark Judge, and did he write that he was not watching it in his calendar?

— Jeremy Newberger (@jeremynewberger) September 27, 2018

A committee aide told the Wall Street Journal that Kavanaugh was watching her testimony “from a monitor in another room in the Dirksen Senate Building.”

So what’s the truth?
