All-female termite societies exist in Japan. Where do I sign up?

Today in “that sounds nice,” a group of biologists studying termite colonies in southern Japan have discovered all-female colonies that function perfectly without even a single male termite being involved.

SEE ALSO: These hero ants perform dramatic, mind-boggling rescues of their wounded comrades

The lady termites, which reproduce asexually, appear to have been descended from mixed sex colonies but at some point decided that enough was enough and branched out to create new colonies where it’s girls’ night every night. And day. Forever.

Besides the obvious advantage of everyone remembering to put the toilet seat down and a presumed 100 percent reduction in man termites making decisions about woman termites’ bodies, the scientists noted that the uniform head shape of lady termites is an advantage when it comes to defending the colony from intruders.

Strong, beautiful lady termites. Getting it done, kicking out men, and forming flawless Spartan phalanxes with their heads. Is it messed up that being a southern Japanese termite sounds awesome right about now?

‘Minecraft: Dungeons’ delivers a new way to play ‘Minecraft’ in 2019

What is Minecraft: Dungeons?

That’s the question Minecraft fans are asking in the wake of the upcoming game’s surprise reveal at MineCon 2018. We know it’s an action adventure game “inspired by classic dungeon crawlers.” And it looks about as adorable as you’d expect.

For anyone out there who might be unfamiliar with the “dungeon crawler” genre, think Diablo. Or Gauntlet. One or more players set out to explore an enclosed, monster-infested environment in search of adventure and sweet, sweet loot.

SEE ALSO: ‘No Man’s Sky Next’ is a vision realized, but that vision is not for me

The trailer above suggests Dungeons may skip Minecraft‘s traditionally first-person perspective gameplay in favor of an isometric view looking down on the action (Diablo and Gauntlet are both good examples of this). Of course, that could also just be the way the trailer was cut.

Minecraft developer Mojang hasn’t provided any details yet on what will set Dungeons apart from other genre favorites. Obviously, the look of the world will maintain that familiar Minecraft feel, but you have to wonder how user creativity and an ability to re-shape the world — both core elements in the main game — will play a role.

You can read a little bit more in the official announcement, found here.

Minecraft: Dungeons is set to release on PC sometime in 2019, so you can probably expect to hear more on this in the coming months.

WVU Beats Texas Tech Behind Will Grier’s Heisman-Worthy Performance

CHARLOTTE, NC - SEPTEMBER 01: Will Grier #7 of the West Virginia Mountaineers drops back to pass against the Tennessee Volunteers during their game at Bank of America Stadium on September 1, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

The No. 12 West Virginia Mountaineers continued their early-season success Saturday with a 42-34 win over the No. 25 Texas Tech Red Raiders at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.

Texas Tech nearly erased a 25-point halftime deficit with 17 unanswered points in the second half, but a pick-six thrown by quarterback Jett Duffey late in the fourth quarter ended the comeback attempt.

Senior quarterback Will Grier carved up Texas Tech, going 27-of-41 for 370 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Mountaineers defense also turned in an impressive performance, holding freshman Alan Bowman to 123 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 9-of-20 passing in the first half.

Bowman exited the game late in the opening half with what appeared to be a rib or side injury, according to Max Olson of The Athletic. He did not return.

Bowman was replaced by Duffey, who was intercepted twice despite making some highlight-reel plays and nearly helping the Red Raiders come from behind.

Entering Saturday’s contest, Bowman had thrown for over 1,000 yards combined in Texas Tech’s previous two games to go along with seven touchdowns and two interceptions.

West Virginia improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, while Texas Tech is now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12.

Grier Continues to Prove He’s Top Heisman Contender

Grier entered the 2018 season with some Heisman hype surrounding him, but after picking apart the Red Raiders, there is little doubt he deserves to be in the conversation with the likes of Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

One week after the Texas Tech defense surprisingly held Oklahoma State’s high-octane offense in check, Grier had no issue moving the ball up and down the field.

It was clear on the first drive of the game that Grier was in for a big day when he hit wide receiver Gary Jennings Jr. for a 13-yard touchdown:

After Grier’s beautiful pass, Doug Farrar of USA Today posted a fitting tweet:

Despite the fact that West Virginia was in firm control of the game, Grier wasn’t done pouring it on in the first half.

With just over a minute remaining in the second quarter, Grier threw a jump ball to Jennings in the end zone, and he came down with it for his second touchdown of the game:

Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic was highly impressed with the touch Grier displayed on his passes in the first half:

Nicole Auerbach @NicoleAuerbach

I could watch Will Grier throw the ball all day. Beautiful.

While the West Virginia offense slowed down in the second half and needed a defensive score to secure the win, the Mountaineers built a big lead in the first half to allow themselves some margin for error.

Some may make the argument that Grier’s production is the result of a wide-open offense tailored to the passing game more so than Tagovailoa at Alabama or Haskins at Ohio State, but that doesn’t take away from what he has been able to do so far this season.

If the Mountaineers continue to win and push Oklahoma for the Big 12 title, then there is no reason why Grier shouldn’t be among the Heisman finalists at the conclusion of the campaign.

Bowman Still Texas Tech’s Best Option at QB Despite Duffey’s Flashes

After Bowman exited the game due to injury, the highly touted Duffey took over for Texas Tech.

In a losing effort, Duffey did some good things, going 16-of-27 for 172 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and rushing for 86 yards and one score.

The sophomore signal-caller was rated the No. 14 dual-threat quarterback in the 2016 recruiting class by 247Sports, and there were questions as to whether he would be Texas Tech’s starter in 2018.

Duffey was beaten out by McLane Carter, though, and after Carter went down with an ankle injury earlier this season, he was surpassed on the depth chart by Bowman as well.

It initially looked as though Duffey was in for a long day after replacing Bowman late in the first half. A highly questionable decision resulted in an interception on his first drive, per Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal:

Don Williams @AJ_DonWilliams

Jett Duffey’s Tech experience summed up in four plays: Two quick passes completed, keeps for 6, has a little mojo going, then throws into triple coverage for an interception. Give him credit, though, for making a solid form tackle on the guy who picked him off.

Following that rocky start, Duffey improved significantly in the second half, starting with a two-yard touchdown pass to De’Quan Bowman late in the third quarter:

  1. CFB’s Walk-on Scholarship Season Has Returned

  2. Tua Continues to Take Hawaiian Football to Another Level

  3. CFB Players Teaming Up to Tackle Hunger in Miami

  4. 4’2″ WR Will Walk on at Baylor University

That marked the first touchdown pass of Duffey’s career.

His signature play came early in the fourth quarter on a 4th-and-9 inside West Virginia territory.

With the Red Raiders trailing by 18, they desperately needed to come away with some points on the drive in order to stay in the game.

Duffey appeared dead to rights on the sidelines, but he slipped past two defenders and ran 27 yards for a first down to set up a field goal:

After Texas Tech stopped West Virginia once again, the ball was in Duffey’s hands with a chance to drive for the tying score.

A poor throw was intercepted by junior cornerback Keith Washington, however, and he returned it 51 yards for a touchdown to end the Texas Tech comeback attempt:

While Duffey undoubtedly adds a different dimension to the Texas Tech offense, Bowman runs the base offense more effectively due to his precision passing.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s system largely relies on timing and rhythm in the passing game, and Bowman showed in recent weeks that he excels in those areas.

Duffey is better when it comes to ad-libbing and making something out of nothing, but Texas Tech’s best chance for success moving forward will be with Bowman under center provided he doesn’t miss significant time due to injury.

West Virginia is Oklahoma’s Biggest Threat in Big 12

West Virginia showed some deficiencies in allowing Texas Tech to come back and make a game of it in the second half, but the Mountaineers did enough to prove their worth as a threat to Oklahoma in the Big 12.

Although the defense struggled a bit with the dual-threat ability of Duffey and the offense lost its rhythm in the second half, West Virginia is a well-rounded team beyond just Grier.

WVU arguably boasts the best receiving corps in the nation with Jennings and David Sills V leading the way.

Simms is often overlooked, but he showed the depth West Virginia has at receiver by reeling in nine receptions for 138 yards and a score Saturday.

The Mountaineers also have an underrated running game spearheaded by junior Kennedy McKoy, who finished with 77 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

That included a 38-yard touchdown run by McKoy at the end of the first quarter:

  1. CFB’s Walk-on Scholarship Season Has Returned

  2. Tua Continues to Take Hawaiian Football to Another Level

  3. CFB Players Teaming Up to Tackle Hunger in Miami

Per Olson, West Virginia’s offense has been great this season when it comes to jumping on the opposition early and building a lead:

Max Olson @max_olson

Will Grier and @WVUfootball are outscoring teams 90-24 in the 1st half and outgaining them 1,202-481 this season.

West Virginia’s defense was nowhere near as good in the second half as it was in the first, but that can be attributed to the sudden change at quarterback.

Bowman and Duffey are very different players, which likely contributed to the downturn in play.

Even so, the Mountaineers intercepted Texas Tech three times, and they let up a grand total of just 37 points in their first three games of the season combined.

The second half wasn’t pretty Saturday, but beating a quality team like Texas Tech on the road is impressive nonetheless, and it suggests both the Mountaineers and Sooners could be undefeated when they meet in the final game of the regular season on Nov. 23 in Morgantown.

If that is the case, then the game may determine who represents the Big 12 in the College Football Playoff.

What’s Next?

The Mountaineers will be heavily favored to remain undefeated next week when they host the Kansas Jayhawks in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech will be on a bye before coming back for a difficult road clash against the TCU Horned Frogs on Oct. 11.

Syria FM: Our battle against terrorism ‘almost over’

In a dramatic speech, Syria’s top diplomat has told the world that his country’s “battle against terrorism is almost over” and that, after more than seven years of brutal civil war, Syria is now ready to welcome back the more than 5 million people who fled the country.

Taking the stage to muted applause at the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting on Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister and foreign minister Walid al-Moallem slammed international interference in Syria, denied Damascus’ use of chemical weapons and accused the US-led coalition of war crimes.

With only Idlib province still under rebel control, al-Moallem explained confidently that the “situation on the ground has become more stable and secure” and that local reconciliation was well under way. He also thanked the Syrian people for their fortitude during the bloody conflict.

Throughout the speech, al-Moallem emphasised Syria’s right to sovereignty and decried the actions of a US-led coalition battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (also known as ISIS or ISIL) for doing “everything but fight terrorism”.

He claimed the “illegitimate” coalition, which includes international players along with local and regional opposition forces, destroyed the Syrian city of Raqqa– a former ISIS stronghold – and took part in massacres of civilians, including women and children as a means of “spreading chaos in international relations” and promoting colonialism and hegemony.

Al-Moallem once again denied findings by UN investigators, which have attributed several of the at least 17 chemical attacks reported during the conflict to government forces.

“We fully condemn the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances,” he said, claiming that no unbiased investigation or evidence had been presented to link his government with chemical attacks.

The issue has been a flashpoint at the UN Security Council, with Russia vetoing efforts to investigate the Assad regime fully.

Shrinking rebel territory

Saturday’s speech came as Syrian government forces, backed by Russia and Iran, have retaken most of territory rebels seized during the war, which has killed more than 400,000 people.

An offensive by government forces on Idlib – the last remaining rebel stronghold – was averted last week when Russia and Turkey reached a deal to establish a demilitarised zone around the province.

Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from the United Nations, said al-Moallem’s “defiant” speech was intended to send a message to both the Syrian opposition and the international community.

“He was telling the Syrian opposition: ‘You’ve lost the war, you’ve got to come back home, you should forget [talking about] the future of Syria without Bashar al-Assad’,” said Ahelbarra.

During the speech, the Syrian foreign minister mentioned “occupation forces,” vowing that the Syrian government will free the country from all “illegitimate foreign troops”.

“He’s saying the presence of Turkish soldiers in the northern part of the country, American and French soldiers in the eastern part of the country, providing assistance to the Kurds is unacceptable and if they don’t pull out from those areas, then the Syrian army has all the legitimate authority to go ahead and liberate those areas,” said Ahelbarra.

“In one way or another [the international community] all realise that Assad has emerged as the winner, but the future is not guaranteed for any party in Syria,” he said.

Refugee crisis

Al-Moallem said that “doors are wide open for all Syrians abroad” to return home and that this will be a priority for Damascus.

Since the conflict began in 2011, some 5.6 million people have fled Syria, with as many as 6.6 million others internally displaced, according to the UN’s refugee agency.

“Today the situation on the ground is more stable and secure, thanks to combatting terrorism,” he said. “All conditions are now present for the voluntary return of refugees.”

Al-Moallem said Syria welcomes reconstruction aid from any country not involved in “aggression” towards Syria, but those offering conditional assistance were “neither invited or welcome to help”.

Towards the end of his address, al-Moallem briefly touched on international politics, chastising Israel for its “oppressive and aggressive policies” in Golan Heights and branding the country’s recently-passed nation state law as “racist”.

He also slammed the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and withdraw funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

Second Kavanaugh accuser cooperating in FBI probe

Deborah Ramirez, who earlier this week accused Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct during their time at Yale University in the 1980s, is cooperating with the FBI in its probe of the Supreme Court nominee, Ramirez’s lawyer said Saturday.

“We can confirm the FBI has reached out to interview Ms. Ramirez and she has agreed to cooperate with their investigation. Out of respect for the integrity of the process, we will have no further comment at this time,” attorney John Clune said in a statement. The New York Times first reported that the FBI was investigating Ramirez’s allegation.

Story Continued Below

President Donald Trump on Friday ordered the bureau to launch an investigation into an allegation of sexual assault leveled against Kavanaugh by Christine Blasey Ford, who claims that Kavanaugh drunkenly forced himself on her during a house party in Maryland more than 30 years ago, when Kavanaugh was in high school.

Trump authorized the inquiry after a dramatic meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday, at which Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) joined the panel’s Democrats in demanding a one-week investigation of Ford’s allegation ahead of a full vote by the chamber to confirm Kavanaugh to the high court.

But the statement this weekend from Ramirez’s attorney suggests the bureau is undertaking a broader mandate in its probe of the federal judge, investigating other accusations of sexual impropriety from Kavanaugh’s past.

In a report published by The New Yorker on Sept. 23, Ramirez alleged Kavanaugh “thrust his penis in her face, and caused her to touch it without her consent” during an alcohol-fueled dormitory party at Yale in the 1983-84 academic school year.

Another woman, Julie Swetnick, has alleged that Kavanaugh was present at parties in the early 1980s where women were plied unknowingly with alcohol and drugs at house parties in the Washington area. She claims she was raped by multiple boys at one such gathering. Swetnick is represented by Michael Avenatti, the attorney for porn star Stormy Daniels.

Avenatti told POLITICO on Saturday afternoon that his client still had not yet been contacted by the FBI.

“If they do not conduct an investigation into my client’s claims it will cast significant doubt as to the legitimacy of the investigation as a whole,” Avenatti said. “You can’t possibly do an appropriate investigation without talking with her.”

Swetnick submitted a written statement to the committee in which she said she witnessed Kavanaugh spike drinks at parties where girls were then sexually assaulted. In the statement, Swetnick asserts Kavanaugh was present when she was the victim of a “gang rape” by multiple boys at one party. She described Kavanaugh as “a mean drunk” whom she witnessed acting “verbally abusive toward girls, including pressing girls against him without their consent,” and, “Grinding against girls and attempting to remove or shift girls’ clothing to expose private body parts.”

Republicans, including Trump himself, dismissed the claims as outrageous.

“The Swetnick thing is a joke. That is a farce,” Kavanaugh testified during the hearings.

After Avenatti revealed his client’s identity, the president personally lashed out at Avenatti, who is also mulling a 2020 run.

“Avenatti is a third rate lawyer who is good at making false accusations, like he did on me and like he is now doing on Judge Brett Kavanaugh,” Trump tweeted Wednesday. “He is just looking for attention and doesn’t want people to look at his past record and relationships — a total low-life!”

Kavanaugh categorically denied all allegations against him on Thursday in a combative appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, testifying shortly after Ford presented her account to lawmakers earlier in the day.

“You’ve tried hard. You’ve given it your all,” Kavanaugh told the panel’s Democrats. “No one can question your effort, but your coordinated and well-funded effort to destroy my good name and destroy my family will not drive me out.”

The hearing’s over, but Twitter isn’t buying Kavanaugh’s argument

Brett Kavanaugh’s seemingly tenuous relationship with the truth is still haunting those who watched him testify on Thursday.

At times, the prospective Supreme Court justice abandoned composure to shed tears and scream, but at his most jarring he straight-up refused to answer questions directly, was unwilling to request an FBI investigation, and, as further research revealed, apparently lied under oath.

In the days since the hearing, people have replayed his testimony in their minds and on their screens. They’ve turned Kavanaugh’s words around over and over again to really let them simmer. And it seems the more thought that’s given to his responses, the more discussions about his dishonesty rage on social media.

SEE ALSO: No matter what happens now, history’s judgment on Kavanaugh is already clear

One of the major, most general causes of concern about Kavanaugh’s testimony is the simple fact that a federal judge, who quite literally navigates the law for a living, refused to answer so many key questions.

call your senators and tell them to vote no for Kavanaugh – the future of our country deserves more than a privileged white boy who’s Spent his whole life over-drinking and can’t answer a simple question without acting more immature about it than a 4 year old.

— Emma González (@Emma4Change) September 28, 2018

Following the hearing and testimonies of both Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford — who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault in an incident that occurred more than 30 years ago, when the two were in high school — Vox created a visually striking chart to compare the times Ford and Kavanaugh each answered or dodged a question.

Ford’s portion is covered in blue, which signifies she did her best to answer each question presented to her in her testimony, while Kavanaugh’s chart is sprinkled with pink lines, a representation of the numerous times he dodged questions.

When Kavanaugh did make an effort to answer basic questions, like those pertaining to his controversial senior yearbook writeup and personal calendar, it wasn’t satisfactory. Again and again he wholeheartedly failed to provide accurate explanations and definitions for terms like “Devil’s Triangle,” “boof,” “ralph,” and more — terms that any person with access to the internet could look up for themselves and fact check. And you’d better believe they did.

During the Whitehouse questions about the yearbook, he’s literally almost sneering with contempt while launching into a series of wildly implausible explanations on ralphing, devil’s triangle, Renate Dolphin, “boofed”, etc.https://t.co/lAowwKhkcz https://t.co/Hj6VmMbufS

— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) September 29, 2018

Keep going back this morning to Kavanaugh lying to the committee about “Ralphing” and other yearbook items. With a straight face. Spicy food? Come on.

— Nick Confessore (@nickconfessore) September 28, 2018

I need help understanding something. Why would Kavanaugh lie about such inconsequential things as the definition of ralphing, booting, devil’s triangle- things so easily disproved. Why risk it?

— Jill (@jhgurf) September 29, 2018

Kavanaugh also stated that 18-year-olds could legally drink in Maryland in 1982, which was true if you turned 18 before July 1. However, a simple search reveals Kavanaugh didn’t turn 18 until Feb. 12, 1983 which means he wasn’t legally allowed to drink until age 21 in Maryland. C’mon, dude.

And then, of course, beyond questions surrounding whether it was legal for him to drink at all, there’s his deep, deep love of beer itself.

Kavanaugh sounded like a broken record throughout his testimony, passionately declaring his love for beer whenever the opportunity presented itself. Yet, at the same time, the man giving beer such rave reviews also wanted the world to believe the following:

  • He never drank on weekdays, despite his beloved teenage calendar — an argued symbol of absolute truth — implying otherwise.

  • He never drank in excess to the point of blacking out, despite saying “sometimes I had too many beers,” in his opening statement; embarrassingly refusing to answer a question about drinking in excess; and that questionable section from his pal Mark Judge’s memoir, Wasted: Tales of a GenX Drunk, that describes a character Bart O’Kavanaugh “vomiting on someone’s car during Beach Week and then passing out.”

  • He has a “weak stomach with beer or with spicy food or anything.”

With all the conflicting beer-related information presented that day, it’s no wonder people are still left with some serious questions and concerns. Some are even gathering evidence from trustworthy sources to create Twitter threads that prove Kavanaugh was far more than a light drinker in the past.

For a guy who has never been blackout drunk in his life, man he loves his beer and drinking stories.

— Bryan Wood (@itsWoodrow) September 27, 2018

Kavanaugh says being president of the Ralph Club is cause he had a weak stomach — why he likes ketchup on spaghetti — Whitehouse says: so the vomiting had to do with alcohol? K refuses to answer reciting his sports and academic record.

— Philip Gourevitch (@PGourevitch) September 27, 2018

For those of you who haven’t listened to Kavanaugh’s testamony I’m going to sum it up:

“Man I love beer. I drink it all the time. Never got black out drunk though. I keep a diary of all of my movements all the time and it says I wasn’t there, don’t get the FBI involved. Bye.”

— Danny Muir (@DannyDocileASMR) September 28, 2018

Lastly, because I’m tired…Kavanaugh was asked by Corey Booker if he:

A) drank beer on the weekdays

B) If skis meant brewskis

What stands out is that Kavanaugh cause this “rare” to drink on the weekday but he literally had it scheduled… pic.twitter.com/vvdVqpnuvT

— Kava-hell-f*ck-naugh (@julian_moffit) September 28, 2018

One of the most widely called out points Kavanaugh used to strengthen his own argument was that the possible witnesses Ford mentioned in her testimony — including Mark Judge, Patrick “P.J.” Smyth, Leland Ingraham Keyser, and another unnamed boy — all denied the sexual assault ever took place.

Kavanaugh leaned on the argument several times on Thursday, prompting many — including Senator Richard Blumenthal — to note that the claim was completely inaccurate. Blumenthal even took the time to publicly state that a person having “no recollection” of the event or not knowing the answer to a question is not the same as denying the event took place.

Blumenthal, like Booker, is pointing out that Kavanaugh yesterday had said that four witnesses had denied Dr. Ford’s account, where what they actually have said is that they do not remember / do not know.

— Nicky Woolf (@NickyWoolf) September 28, 2018

On Friday, after pleas from Democratic senators and support from outside parties like the American Bar Association and Dean of Yale Law School, Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation vote was delayed to accommodate a requested week-long FBI investigation.

President Trump granted a short investigation that will remain limited in scope, and while it’s unclear exactly how the FBI will approach Ford’s accusations or examine the claims of other Kavanaugh accusers Julie Swetnick and Deborah Ramirez, here’s hoping the country gains some additional sense of clarity on Ford’s accusations and Kavanaugh’s high school years beyond the vague, often confusing statements he made to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Iraq ‘regrets’ closure of US consulate, Iran rejects ‘propaganda’

Iraq has said it “regrets” the decision of the United States to shut its consulate in the southern city of Basra which has been rocked by weeks of deadly protests, while Iran has accused Washington of making “false accusations” to pressure Baghdad.

“The ministry regrets the American decision to pull its staff out of Basra,” Iraq’s foreign minsitry said in a statement on Saturday.

The US on Friday announced the closure of its consulate in Basra and said it is relocating diplomatic personnel assigned there alleging increasing threats from Iran and Iran-backed armed groups.

Blaming Iran for “indirect fire”, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said consular duties will be taken over by the embassy in Baghdad, while his office issued an advisory urging Americans not to travel to Iraq.

The decision further escalated the tension between the US and Iran, which is the target of increasing economic sanctions by the Trump administration.

Iran rejected what it called the US “propaganda and false accusations”, insisting it condemned any attacks on diplomatic sites.

“Iran sees the absurd US justification which follow weeks of propaganda and false accusations against Iran and Iraqi forces as playing a blame-game,” said the country’s foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi.

He said Tehran condemns any aggression against diplomats and diplomatic sites, and charged that the US move was a pretext for promoting “insecurity in Iraq” and to “pressure the country’s government”.

US sanctions on Iran

In May, Trump withdrew the US from an international deal to put curbs on Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for easing sanctions.

France, Britain, Germany, China and Russia have stayed in the pact, vowing to save it despite the restoration of US sanctions. The rial has lost 40 percent of its value against the US dollar since April.

Iran has blamed US sanctions for the currency’s fall, saying the measures amount to a “political, psychological and economic” war on Tehran.

Iran has also accused the US and Israel of involvement in a deadly attack at a military parade in southwestern Iran this month.

Basra has been at the centre of protests that broke out in July before spreading to other parts of the country, as demonstrators railed against poor services and corruption among government officials.

Protesters set fire to several government buildings as well as headquarters of political parties and groups backed by Iran, which saw its consulate in Basra burnt to the ground.

In a rare attack in Baghdad early September, three mortar rounds were fired into the Green Zone, a heavily fortified area which is home to the Iraqi parliament, government offices and the US embassy.

Iran is the only other major outside power present in Iraq, alongside bitter foe the US, which had led the 2003 invasion that toppled the then president Saddam Hussein.

Facebook already hit with a lawsuit tied to the latest data breach

Image: LODI Franck/SIPA/REX/Shutterstock

2016%2f09%2f16%2f63%2fhttpsd2mhye01h4nj2n.cloudfront.netmediazgkymde1lza2.c97cfBy Adam Rosenberg

That didn’t take long. Hours after Facebook revealed that at least 50 million users were “directly affected” by a data breach, two of the social network’s users have come together in a class-action lawsuit.

It started early on Friday. Facebook alerted users that a security issue had been discovered on Tuesday, Sept. 25. A vulnerability in the site’s “View As” feature — which lets users see what others do when viewing their profile — gave hackers the means to take over people’s accounts.

SEE ALSO: Some basic steps to protect your Facebook account after hack hits 50 million users

It’s a bad situation that subsequently grew worse. Hours after the initial news broke, it became clear that Facebook users who had connected their profile to an Instagram account — and, potentially, any other third-party service — were at risk on those other platforms as well.

Now there’s this lawsuit, which names Carla Echavarria of California and Derrick Walker of Virginia as plaintiffs. The document also notes that the filing is “on behalf of all persons in the United States … whose PII was compromised in the data breach.”

(PII is an acronym for “personally identifiable information,” which the lawsuit defines as “names, birthdates, hometowns, addresses, locations, interests, relationships, email addresses, photos, and videos” — the data users share with Facebook.)

The lawsuit makes the case that Facebook’s inability to protect user data is an act of negligence, and that the company worked to conceal what the filing describes as a “lax and inadequate approach to data security.” The reasoning behind these allegations goes back to the Cambridge Analytica scandal in March.

“[Facebook] knew its data security measures were grossly inadequate by, at the absolute latest, March 2018 when the Cambridge Analytica matter came to light, exposing Facebook’s lax and inadequate approach to data security,” the court document reads.

“At that time, Facebook was on notice that its systems were extremely vulnerable to attack, facts [Facebook] already knew given its previous exposures and security problems.”

In other words: Even if Facebook didn’t recognize its own data security issues until the March 2018 scandal broke, the revelations that surfaced should have prompted greater action.

As the filing states: “In response to all of these facts, [Facebook] chose to do nothing to protect [Echavarria, Walker, and other users] or warn them about the security problems and, instead, openly represented to Congress and foreign governments that Facebook was dedicated to the highest and most advance security practices and protocols.”

The lawsuit also alleges that Facebook violated aspects of California’s Unfair Competition Law and Customer Records Act.
