Is Brazil heading towards a military dictatorship?

It has been 33 years since Brazil’s military government gave up power and democratic elections were held. And it’s been 30 years since the country returned to democracy after the promulgation of its constitution.

In these three decades, there have been many political ups and downs – including the impeachment of two presidents – but the political process has always observed the constitutional order.

In recent weeks, however, as the new election season heated up, it seems the shadow of the military is creeping back onto the political scene in Brazil. The political polarisation and instability in the country have ushered a period of public “unreason”, similar to the one the United States experienced in 2016 which resulted in the election of Donald Trump.

Like in the US, there is talk about “draining the swamp” and fighting corruption, but unlike the US, there have been some suggestions that Brazil needs the “firm hand” of the military in order to bring back stability and order.

Jair Bolsonaro, a frontrunner in the presidential race and a former army officer, along with his supporters, seems to be at the centre of this increasingly worrying trend.

Brazil’s political ‘alternative’: A military president

The Brazilian political establishment has been struggling with major political crises over the past few years. Huge corruption scandals have shaken the very foundations of political institutions, feeding growing public anger which has often spilled into the streets.

All major political parties have been tainted, including the Workers’ Party (PT), which suffered through the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff and the jailing of its leader and former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Amid this crisis, Bolsonaro emerged as an “alternative” candidate, preaching quick and heavy-handed solutions and appealing to the strong anti-PT sentiment in the country.

He is currently leading in the polls, with a recent projection of a runoff between him and the PT candidate Fernando Haddad showing him winning by two percentage points.

With his military background and conservative rhetoric, Bolsonaro remains quite popular despite being seen as a far-right candidate. He has not shied away from insulting minorities, women, and gay people and publicly praising the military government. He has even declared the notorious head of the Doi-Codi intelligence service, Colonel Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, who oversaw the torture and killing of political prisoners in the 1970s, his personal friend and a Brazilian hero.

Bolsonaro’s running mate is retired general Hamilton Mourao who has equally, if not more, controversial views. He recently defended the possibility of an auto-coup if “anarchy” erupts when the duo is elected. He has also said that Brazil needs a new constitution to be written by a commission of unelected “notable people” and that having an elected constituent assembly write the 1988 constitution was a “mistake”.

Bolsonaro also has a number of reserve generals working on his campaign programme, he is contact with the defence minister and the army leadership, and has many officers privately and openly supporting him. There are even WhatsApp groups of military personnel who are actively promoting his campaign.

At the same time, the military leadership has demonstrated their resentment of the PT and Lula and pressured the Federal Supreme Court not to rule in his favour of his appeals to be released from prison.

There have also been reports that there is growing discontent among high and low-ranking military officers triggered by recent protests and strikes, which they see as “anarchy”.

These reports and public comments by military leaders are gravely unsettling and it seems that however this election goes, the military is likely to get involved directly or indirectly.

If Bolsonaro wins, he is likely to ingratiate himself with the military’s top brass and push forward with regressive policies undermining Brazil’s democracy, resurrecting various aspects of the military junta, or even undertaking a Fujimori-style auto-coup – assuming full legislative and judicial powers.

If Haddad wins, the military might not accept his victory; what that would translate into is anyone’s guess.

Nostalgia for the junta

During the twentieth century, Brazil witnessed nine coups, four of them successful, with the last one installing a military government that ruled with violence and cruelty for 21 years.

Thirty years have passed since then – enough time for retrospection, objective historical evaluation, and a public debate to be held on what happened during those decades. Instead, many Brazilians seem to be confused about the history of the military government to the point that today, there is a frightening revisionist trend.

According to a June 2017 opinion poll, 43 percent of respondents trust fully the army, while another 40 percent trusted it “a little”, and only 15 percent did not trust the institution at all. Another survey released in September last year indicated that a staggering 43 percent are in favour of military intervention in government.

This nostalgia for the military government should be seen within the context of the ongoing crisis in Brazil. The corruption scandals, the protests, the violence in the streets, and the deteriorating economic situation have pushed many to think that the country needs rule by an iron fist.

A government with a more authoritarian approach would be able to solve the problems the country is currently facing with greater efficiency and ease, some think. And the only institution capable of that is the army, which is largely seen as immune to corruption. It is not uncommon to read on social media that there “was no corruption” during that period and that all public services “were better”.

But those who have adopted this type of thinking – especially the youth who have no memory of the bloody violence of the 1970s and 1980s – do not realise the consequences of supporting the involvement of the military in civilian power.

And part of the reason for this is because Brazil never went through a proper legal process to bring to justice those responsible for the crimes committed by the military government – whether forced disappearances, torture and killings, or corruption, embezzlement and illegal self-enrichment. This very much has allowed historical revisionism and continued politicisation of the army.

Brazil needs to snap out of this delusion that the military can fix the country and that the “order” of military rule is better than the “chaos” of democracy. In fact, we should follow the example of Uruguay, which recently detained the head of its armed forces for publicly criticising a draft law.

It is the duty of the army and its officers to follow the orders of civilian power, to submit to the people and to their institutions. They have no place in government.

Yara Shahidi Wants To Help You Throw A Party At The Polls This Election Day

Getty Images

Mark your calendar for November 6: You’ve got a party to go to.

This Election Day, MTV’s +1 the Vote is teaming up with Yara Shahidi and #VoteTogether to throw parties at the polls in all 50 states. To sweeten the deal, 50 grants of up to $1,000 will be available for you (yes, you!) to host an epic party of your own for your friends and family. The grant program was designed with the pivotal midterm elections in mind — after all, young people comprise the most powerful voting bloc in the country, and that power deserves to be celebrated.

For Shahidi, this new undertaking is just the latest case of her exemplary political activism. The 18-year-old Grown-ish star has her own non-profit initiative, Eighteenx18, that aims to educate the next generation of voters, particularly those hitting voting age in 2018, and urges them to get involved politically.

“We (Gen Z) generally care about the world around us, and so we’re voting for more than just our self-interest,” Yara told MTV News. “My passion really stemmed from having gone through the 2016 election, where myself and many of my peers were unable to vote. I’m looking forward to partnering with MTV to help my peers across the country celebrate voting in their first-ever midterm election and using their power to vote.”

Angie Jean-Marie, director of #VoteTogether at Civic Nation, said in a statement, “#VoteTogether is proud to be partnering with MTV and Yara Shahidi’s Eighteenx18 to shift the culture of voting for young people and make it a more social, fun, and celebratory occasion. Our goal is to create positive experiences for new and young voters at thousands of voting parties nationwide and establish a tradition of long-term voting.”

To find out how you can apply for a grant and throw your very own democracy-friendly bash during early voting or on Election Day, head to plus1thevote.com. The deadline to apply is October 5 at midnight. Happy voting!

Here are the most fetch pink celebrations of ‘Mean Girls’ Day

2018%2f07%2f11%2fcc%2fwebp.netresizeimage4.f6ff3By Xavier Piedra

If you’re not wearing pink today, sorry to say it, but “you can’t sit with us.”

For those of you unfortunate human beings who haven’t seen Mean Girls, allow me to explain why Oct. 3 is the most important holiday in our society. It all stems from a scene in the movie where Cady Heron, who is played by Lindsay Lohan, tells her crush Aaron Samuels the date, and it was Oct. 3.

On top of that, The Plastics (the group of girls who Cady is kinda forced into) make it a rule that on Wednesdays they must wear pink. So having Oct. 3 land on a Wednesday this year is literally the ultimate formula for the best Mean Girls Day ever.

SEE ALSO: Cher’s mom is really proud of her daughter’s ‘Mamma Mia’ cameo

And Twitter was obviously so here for it.

Other users really took their pink game to unexpected levels that would impress Regina George (maybe). Even Burger King got the memo.

And of course, you can’t have a true Mean Girls Day without a ton of memes.

Happy Oct. 3 everyone! May your outfits be pink, and may “fetch” remain a thing that never really happens.

Conflicting Saudi, Turkish claims on Jamal Khashoggi whereabouts

Saudi and Turkish officials have made conflicting statements on the whereabouts of a prominent journalist, who has reportedly gone missing while visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi dissident critical of the country’s crown prince, entered the consulate’s premises at around 1pm (10:00 GMT) on Tuesday in what seemed to be a routine visit to sort out paperwork, before disappearing.

Turkey’s presidential spokesperson said on Wednesday that Khashoggi remains inside the Saudi consulate, a day after his fiancee reported he had failed to emerge from a meeting in the mission.

“According to information we have, this individual who is a Saudi national is still at the consulate as of now,” Ibrahim Kalin said.

He also said that Turkish authorities were in contact with Saudi officials and he hoped the situation would be resolved.

In contrast, a Saudi official quoted by the Reuters news agency said that the journalist was “not in the consulate nor in Saudi custody”.

“Mr. Khashoggi visited the consulate to request paperwork related to his marital status and exited shortly thereafter,” the official said.

Khashoggi, who has been living in self-exile in the United States, is a prominent columnist for the Washington Post. He has long criticised the Saudi government’s reform programme under the auspices of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Fiancee calls police

His fiancee – who requested anonymity – told the Post she accompanied him but waited outside and called the police when Khashoggi did not emerge after the consulate closed.

Khashoggi, who once acted as an adviser to the Saudi royal family, fled Saudi Arabia in September of last year amid a crackdown on the kingdom’s intellectuals and journalists.

He told Al Jazeera’s UpFront in March there was no room left for debate in Saudi Arabia, with citizens rounded up and jailed for questioning the government’s policies.

“As we speak today, there [are] Saudi intellectuals and journalists jailed.

“Now, nobody will dare to speak and criticise the reforms [initiated by the crown prince],” he said, adding “it would be much better for him to allow a breathing space for critics, for Saudi intellectuals, Saudi writers, Saudi media to debate”.

Netflix’s Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina Somehow Looks Even Crazier Than Riverdale

Netflix

Something wicked this way comes… and her name is Sabrina Spellman. The witch is back in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a dark and campy take on Archie Comics’ beloved Sabrina the Teenage Witch starring Madam Satan herself.

Based on the horror title from Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the occult drama is not for the faint of heart — seriously, the fake blood budget on this show must be astronomical.

On the eve of her 16th birthday, Sabrina is faced with a tough choice: Sign her name in the Dark Lord’s book and commit herself to the coven, or go against her family legacy and remain in the mortal world forever. (To be fair, the mortal world has her dreamy boyfriend Harvey Kinkle in it, so that sounds like the better option.)

The full-length trailer gives us a glimpse of some of the horrors in store for Greendale’s teen residents, including Sabrina’s terrifying 16th birthday, sacrifices to the Dark Lord, and downright sinful behavior. “I’m not an evil person,” Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) says. “But these are desperate times.”

And similar to Riverdale, the adults on this show aren’t any better, from Madam Satan’s evil plot to get revenge on the Spellman family to Hilda and Zelda’s fatal bickering.

Aguirre-Sacasa serves as writer and executive producer on the series, along with fellow Riverdale EPs Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater. Lee Toland Krieger, who has directed several episodes of Riverdale, is also an EP and director on the series.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina hits Netflix on October 26.

Riz Ahmed once almost fist bumped the Queen

By Laura Byager

Riz Ahmed may be a total badass on screen in the upcoming Marvel movie Venom.

But when the 35-year-old British actor met the Queen — aka Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms — he was just as confused and awkward about it as we all would be.

Ahmed was a guest of James Corden’s The Late Late Show were he described a very awkward handshake he had with the Queen.

This wholesome Twitter account compares Chris Evans to soft, fluffy golden retrievers

Uncanny.
Uncanny.

As dog people will tell you, golden retrievers are friendly, energetic, adorable as hell, and extremely lovable. But these four traits aren’t exclusive to pups — they also apply to actor and human golden retriever Chris Evans.

One enlightening day in September, the person behind the Twitter account @retrievans (who preferred to remain anonymous) noticed the similarities between the actor and sweet golden retrievers and decided to dedicate an entire account to proving the groundbreaking theory that they are one in the same.

Inspired by the “tessa as goats” account — it compares actress Tessa Thompson to cute little goats — @retrievans and friends began the hunt for photos of Evans that resembled retrievers. Spoiler alert: the results were spot-on… like, nearly uncanny.

SEE ALSO: Chris Evans’ pup deserves a Grammy for this howling dog park duet

“It has to do with Evans’ nature in general that reminded me a lot of goldens,” @retrievans said of the account via Twitter direct message.

At the time of writing, the “Chris Evans as Golden Retrievers” account had less than 15 tweets, but nearly 23,000 followers — including Evans himself! “Truth be told, I wasn’t expecting to receive this amount of response,” @retrievans said, adding that they’re truly grateful for the positive feedback and the chance to show Evans a token of gratitude for his work.

The account love is well-deserved, too. I mean, just look at these side-by sides. We’ve got Chris and a pup laughing.

And here’s Captain America and Captain America’s trusty sidekick. (Marvel, you paying attention?)

There’s Chris and a pup snuggling, repping their favorite football team, shooting some hoops, and goofing off.

Chris is a dog, it seems! I’m convinced!

It’s no surprise that Evans, who adopted his rescue pup Dodger in 2016, is undoubtedly a dog person, so it’s no surprise that he’s a fan of the account, too.

If you’re looking for a pure and wholesome escape from whatever else is on your Twitter feed, consider following. But be warned…by the time you’re done reviewing, the tweets you’ll have likely transformed into a retrievans truther.

Day 1 of Fat Bear Week pits a former champion against a young upstart

The Oct. 3 Fat Bear Week matchups
The Oct. 3 Fat Bear Week matchups

2017%2f12%2f04%2f7d%2fmarkpic.c6031By Mark Kaufman

Welcome to Fat Bear Week at Mashable! Each fall, Katmai National Park holds a competition as Alaska’s brown bears finish fattening up for their long winter hibernation. This year, Mashable is getting in on the salmon-munching action. Check back with us all week as we follow the fat bear face-offs each day, and remember to get your votes in for each round. Happy fishing!

It borders on nearly inconceivable that any wild animal can grow so exceptionally plump over the course of just four months. But, it’s happening.

The voting for Fat Bear Week in Katmai National Park — where bears are blessed with a copious supply of sockeye salmon that allows them to fatten up tremendously before hibernating — has opened up, and there are two matches in play on Wednesday.

Match 1 pits former Fat Bear Week champion Bear 409, known as “Beadnose,” against the younger Bear 151, called “Walker.”

The second match of the day will post at 4 p.m. ET,  and pits Bear 845, or “Divot,” against Bear 503.

Both these bears also have rich histories. Four years ago, divot survived a severe wire-trap that sliced an inch into her neck, while Bear 503 was adopted by Bear 435 (“Holly”) after being abandoned by his biological mother.

Voting is done through the Katmai National Park Facebook page, where the park presents images of each skinny bear in June, versus their enlarged fall appearance.

Voting is easy.

To vote for your choice, click into the photos of each large brown bear. Click the “Like” button for whichever bear you think has grown the fattest over the course of the season.

The park will announce the winners at 10 p.m. ET each day.

Fat Bear Week is certainly entertaining for us far-off viewers. But for the wild animals, growing fat is essential.

The bears lower their metabolism to extreme degrees during winter hibernation.

Yet, the energy they do consume is believed to come almost entirely from their fat stores. Fatter, in short, isn’t just better for bears — it’s a big-time adaptive advantage.

This post is part of Hard Refresh, a soothing weekly column where we try to cleanse your brain of whatever terrible thing you just witnessed on Twitter.

Autumn has finally arrived, which means it’s time for apple picking, cider donuts, and some seasonally appropriate methods of stress relief.

When it comes to unwinding in the fall, there are a variety of glorious options like taking a walk in the crisp air or jumping in a huge pile of leaves. But if you’re stuck inside staring at your computer, we highly recommend watching some professional pumpkin carving videos to cleanse your brain while simultaneously getting your seasonal fix.

SEE ALSO: Here’s the scary movies you should watch this month

Any human with average carving skills knows that carving pumpkins always seems like a fun activity, until you find yourself covered in pumpkin guts and unable to properly wield a knife in such a way that produces the picturesque design you’d hoped for. But watching other people carve ’em up? Now that makes for an absolutely great time, not to mention it’s mess-free.

I first saw a professional pumpkin carving video when I stumbled onto Sculpture Geek‘s YouTube channel. Seconds into a 15-minute-long video titled, “How to Carve a 3D Pumpkin,” I was hooked. Something about watching skilled hands use carving tools to shave off pumpkin pulp and fibrous strands puts me in a serene trance. And before I know it, the pumpkin’s transformed into an impressively realistic face.

Over the course of the time lapse, the sculptor creates immensely detailed facial features for the pumpkin. And though the process is most certainly NOT simple, the video makes carving look effortless, which is part of what makes watching so extremely soothing.

About seven minutes into the video the carving comes to an end and the final product is revealed. The remaining footage is a scene from Sculpture Geek’s full carving tutorial, so even you can attempt the remarkable feat. It seems like a ridiculously complex endeavor, TBH, but if you really want go there you can pay $24.99 to watch the full video.

If you’re in the mood to leave the mess to the pros though, you can check out Sculpture_Geek’s Resident Evil and Nintendo-themed pumpkin videos, and search for other impressive carvers by looking up 3D-pumpkin or jack-o’-lantern carving videos on YouTube.

You can even watch Martha Stewart try her hand at carving faces alongside artist Ray Villafane. What’s more relaxing than that?!

While I prefer to kick back and watch skilled carvers go to town, those of you who want to step up your pumpkin game this year might want to invest in some classic carving tools from Amazon.

There are also a bunch of less intimidating carving tutorials for beginners online, most of which you don’t have to pay for. So perhaps consider starting small and working your way up. Who knows? One day you might even be skilled enough to make your own soothing time lapse videos.
