Jose Mourinho Reportedly Has 1 Game to Save Manchester United Job

Jose Mourinho could have just one match to save his job as Manchester United boss after “losing the faith” of the club’s board.

According to The Sun‘s Neil Custis, Mourinho could be sacked if his side lose to Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Should the beleaguered Magpies win, it’s said the Special One’s only hope of remaining in charge is “the lack of a viable alternative,” with rumoured favourite Zinedine Zidane thought to “be distancing himself from the job.”

Newcastle have yet to win this season, with their only points coming from goalless draws at Cardiff City and Crystal Palace.

As for the Red Devils, they have endured a poor run of form that has seen them draw at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Valencia, exit the Carabao Cup at Championship side Derby County‘s hands—also at Old Trafford—and a 3-1 defeat at West Ham United.

It is not just the results but also the performances that have disappointed United legend Paul Scholes, who has been bored watching his former team play:

“We sit in the studio and end up watching other screens.” 👀

It says a lot when Paul Scholes’ eyes turn away from Man Utd games 😐 https://t.co/bNhBEng3H4

Mourinho told BT Sport after the 0-0 draw with Valencia that his players “don’t have the technical quality to build from the back.” Sky Sports’ Adam Bate feels that’s an unhelpful line to take:

Adam Bate @ghostgoal

Jose Mourinho seems to think he doesn’t have the players to play better football. Plenty of fans will agree but I just don’t think the attitude that ‘we will play that style when we have the players’ helps. United feels like a club forever waiting for the next transfer window.

Even limited players can play attractive football if utilised correctly, and what’s more, Mourinho has spent close to £400 million on his squad, so it’s largely his responsibility if the players he has aren’t capable of meeting his demands.

Football writer Liam Canning has been a vocal supporter of the manager during his time at Old Trafford, but he is one of many who would like to see the back of him:

Liam Canning @LiamPaulCanning

I wanted Mourinho and I thought it was the right choice by Woodward. I still thought it was the old Mourinho that was boisterous, confident and able to deliver major success. It’s evident that it’s not. No shame in bringing in a replacement now. It’s needed.

Should United fail to beat a struggling Newcastle side at home, it would be difficult see a light at the end of the tunnel for Mourinho.

There is an international break after the match, giving the club plenty of time to act and bring in a new manager.

Netherlands disrupted Russian hacking attack: Dutch minister

Dutch defence minister has said Netherlands disrupted Russian hacking attack and expelled four Russian intelligence officers.

In April, authorities disrupted an attempt by Russian intelligence agents to hack the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld said at a press conference in the Hague.

Bijleveld called on Russia to cease its cyber activities aimed at “undermining” Western democracies.

“The Dutch government finds the involvement of these intelligence operatives extremely worrisome,” Bijleveld said.

“Normally we don’t reveal this type of counter-intelligence operation.”

This comes as Britain accused Kremlin spies of directing a host of cyber attacks aimed at undermining Western democracies by sowing confusion in everything from sport to transport and the 2016 US presidential election.

Britain’s Defence Minister Gavin Williamson said Moscow’s “reckless and indiscriminate” attacks left it isolated in the international community.

“This is not the actions of a great power, this is the actions of a pariah state and we’ll continue working with allies to isolate, make them understand they cannot continue to conduct themselves in such a way,” Williamson told reporters in Brussels.

Russia on Thursday rejected British accusations its spies were behind global cyber attacks, saying the allegations were unworthy and part of a disinformation campaign designed to damage Russian interests, the TASS news agency reported.

Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a news briefing that the accusations were the product of someone with a “rich imagination”.

“It’s some kind of a diabolical perfume cocktail [of allegations],” TASS quoted Zakharova as telling reporters.

“The vivid imagination of our colleagues from the UK has no boundaries indeed […] it’s undignified for the country, which pretends to play one of the leading roles in the world,” she said.

Al Jazeera’s Paul Brennan, speaking from London, said Thursday’s reaction is notable.

“Most if not all advanced intelligence agencies engage in hacking,” he said. “But it seems today that what we’re seeing is a coordinated campaign against Russia specifically because the activities that Russia has been engaging in go far beyond what in normal intelligence circles would be regarded as acceptable”.

Mike Morhaime, the man who co-founded gaming giant Blizzard Entertainment in 1991 (originally under the name Silicon & Synapse) and oversaw the launch of numerous hit franchises, including Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft, has stepped down as president and CEO.

J. Allen Brack, who previously served as executive producer and senior VP for World of Warcraft, will be taking on the lead role, while Morhaime will stay as an advisor.

SEE ALSO: ‘Battle for Azeroth’ is exactly the expansion ‘World of Warcraft’ needed

In his farewell post, published on Blizzard’s website, Morhaime didn’t share the reasons for his departure.

“After many years of working with some of the industry’s most talented people to create games and worlds for you to play in, I’ve decided it’s time for someone else to lead Blizzard Entertainment,” he wrote.

Mike – thank you for everything: for setting the foundation for the games, worlds and communities that we love, and for being a guiding light and an example for us all.

— Blizzard Entertainment (@Blizzard_Ent) October 3, 2018

In his first post as CEO, Brack announced that another co-founder, Allen Adham, will join Blizzard’s executive team. Adham was lead designer of World of Warcraft but left the company right before that title’s launch in 2004, only to return in 2016. And Ray Gresko, who worked on Overwatch and Diablo III, has been appointed chief development officer.

Blizzard, which is a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, is one of the most important video game publishers in history. Its biggest hit is World of Warcraft, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, which essentially re-defined the genre when it launched. WoW drew in millions of users and paved the way for numerous other similar titles which followed.

Blizzard has also been notoriously slow and pedantic with its game launches, but Brack gave a few hints new games are coming soon. He said that Adham will oversee the development of “several new games,” and he also said the company will have “a few surprises” next month at its annual BlizzCon event.

Putin to ink arms deal with India amid threat of US sanctions

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to arrive to India on Thursday for a two-day visit during which Moscow is expected to ink weapons deal worth billions of dollars.

The Kremlin said before the two-day visit by Putin and top Russian ministers that the “key feature” would be the signing of a $5bn deal for the S-400 air defence system, despite the risk of US sanctions against countries buying Russian defence equipment.

On the eve of Putin’s arrival later on Thursday, the US poured cold water on India’s efforts to obtain a waiver to avoid sanctions under legislation called Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

The deal will also help reassure Russia because India-Russia ties have been fraying at the edges for the past several years

Pramit Pal Chaudhuri, Journalist and security analyst

Upgrades in arms systems “including the S-400 air and missile defense system” would be a particular focus for CAATSA, a US State Department spokesperson was quoted as saying by India’s PTI news agency.

“The S-400 is attracting attention due to the US-Trump overhang. With the US’ domestic legislation discouraging countries like India from engaging in ‘significant’ trade with Russia, there is a high-visibility political sub-text about how this deal will impact the India-US bi-lateral,” said Commodore (retired) Uday Bhaskar, Director at Society for Policy Studies.

“The US response will be evident by November 5, when both the trade with Russia and the hydrocarbon imports from Iran will come to a tipping point. If the US decides to go ahead with its domestic legislation and invoke penalties/sanctions against Delhi, it would test the resilience of the India-US bi-lateral,” he said.

“This would potentially be an anomalous situation, wherein the US would place both India and China in the same ‘sanctions’ basket – unlikely bed-fellows indeed. Beijing will monitor this S-400 issue very closely and read the tea-leaves carefully for long-term strategic implications.”

Critical gaps in defence capabilities

Last month Washington slapped financial sanctionson the Chinese military for buying Russian Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets and the S-400.

f the US decides to go ahead with its domestic legislation and invoke penalties/sanctions against Delhi, it would test the resilience of the India-US bi-lateral

Commodore (retired) Uday Bhaskar, Director at Society for Policy Studies

However, the US is in a difficult position when it comes to India. It wants to bolster ties with New Delhi to counter China’s growing assertiveness, something that has also rattled India.

Washington and New Delhi announced plans last month for joint military drills in 2019, and agreed on the exchange of sensitive military information. The US is now India’s second biggest arms supplier.

But Russia remains number one, and a string of new deals with the Asian giant would be a major win for Moscow – and a big snub to the US.

Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who appear to enjoy a personal rapport, are also likely to discuss a deal for four Krivak-class frigates worth $2bn and 200 light utility Ka-226 helicopters pegged at $1bn.

Experts say India needs the sophisticated S-400 to fill critical gaps in its defence capabilities, in view of China’s rise and perceived threats from Pakistan, against whom India has fought three wars.

“India has been concerned about a possible two-front war in which it has to face some form of confrontation from Pakistan and China at the same time,” said Pramit Pal Chaudhuri, New Delhi-based foreign policy analyst and Foreign Affairs Editor at Hindustan Times newspaper.

“Also India’s Air Force’s strength has weakened owing to acquisition problems. India has been shopping around for sometime now for air-defence systems,” he told Al Jazeera.

“The S-400 systems have not been battle-tested but technologically they are quite good, also relatively cheap. So the Russian S-400s are being seen as a good solution.

“The deal will also help reassure Russia because India-Russia ties have been fraying at the edges for the past several years,” he added.

Warm ties

Putin, 65, and Modi, 68, are also set to discuss a possible second Russian-built nuclear power plant. Moscow is currently expanding India’s biggest nuclear power plant in Kudankulam.

Also on the agenda is Russian training for Indian astronauts as New Delhi aims to launch its first crewed space mission in 2022.

More than 20 agreements are expected to be signed during Putin’s visit in areas such as defence, space and economy.

But military relations would likely be the main focus.

India is the world’s biggest arms importer and is undergoing a $100bn upgrade of its ageing hardware, much of it of Soviet vintage including MiG jets that have frequently crashed in the Indian countryside.

Annual Russia-India trade has slipped below $10bn since 2014, as Modi cultivated closer diplomatic and economic ties with Washington, while Russia has courted Pakistan and China.

Ties received a boost last year when Modi and Putin held a fruitful annual bilateral summit, followed by meetings in Astana and at the G20 in Germany. They also met in Sochi this year.

On the strategic front, Russia helped India become a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation this year and has backed New Delhi’s long-held demand for a permanent UN Security Council seat.

House Democrats plan investigations blitz over Trump health policies

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer.

“We need to restore what is a constitutional responsibility of the Congress: To ensure the administration is working on behalf of the health and safety of the American people,” Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 House Democrat, told POLITICO. | Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Health Care

If they win in November, House Democrats will wield new power to probe Trump’s assault on Obamacare and separation of migrant families.

Democrats are quietly preparing to launch a slew of investigations into the Trump administration’s health care moves if they retake the House in November, aiming to freeze the White House’s efforts to unravel Obamacare and probe the administration’s care of immigrant kids.

The wide-ranging inquiries, coordinated across multiple committees, would focus on the administration’s most controversial actions on health care, which include chipping away at the Affordable Care Act, urging the courts to gut the health law’s protections for pre-existing conditions, and separating migrant families at the border, lawmakers and aides told POLITICO.

Story Continued Below

Outside groups are also pressing Democrats to look into the health department‘s approvals of new Medicaid work requirements in some states, which have already pushed more than 4,000 low-income people off coverage in Arkansas. The work rules have run into roadblocks in court over questions about whether HHS properly considered their impact.

Democrats, who now own a clear electoral advantage on health care following the GOP’s bungled attempts to repeal Obamacare, hope their oversight efforts will bolster their defense of the newly-popular health care law. At the same time, Democrats aim to prove that they, unlike Republicans, can provide the check on President Donald Trump that polls show voters want.

“We need to restore what is a constitutional responsibility of the Congress: To ensure the administration is working on behalf of the health and safety of the American people,” Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 House Democrat, told POLITICO. “That hasn’t happened over the last 18 to 20 months.”

Party leaders have been reluctant to make concrete plans beyond November’s midterm elections, despite signs that House Democrats stand a good chance of taking power amid a broad backlash to the GOP’s policies and to Trump himself. In interviews, several lawmakers said they didn’t want to “jinx it” by discussing their oversight agenda for next year.

“There has not been a definitive decision about what the priorities would be,” a Democratic leadership aide said. “Everybody’s focused on November.”

Democrats are also warning that even rigorous oversight requires a measured approach. While lawmakers may be tempted to bury the troubled Trump administration in investigations, party leaders say they want their inquiries to be focused on real policy rather than point-scoring — a charge they levied against Republicans during the Obama administration.

Still, Democratic lawmakers and aides are privately sketching out plans to hit the White House and federal health agencies with a barrage of requests for documents and testimony for investigations likely to span the House’s Oversight, Energy and Commerce, and Ways and Means committees.

If they win the majority and acquire subpoena powers and the ability to set committee agendas, Democrats plan to probe what they see as the administration’s “sabotage of Obamacare.” That includes Republicans’ slashing of outreach efforts and their promotion of skimpier coverage alternatives, amid rhetorical attacks by Trump and the top health officials overseeing the law.

“It’s mainly trying to figure out what they’ve been doing to sabotage the ACA, and what can be done [about it],” said Rep. Frank Pallone, the top Democrat on the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Another major line of inquiry will focus on the Trump administration’s decision to partially support a lawsuit from Republican attorneys general against Obamacare. The unusual move — the federal government typically defends federal laws against lawsuits — has drawn criticism from some Republicans but hasn’t yet faced congressional scrutiny.

Democrats will also examine HHS’ role as the custodian of thousands of migrant children, including those forcibly separated from their parents by the Trump administration. House Republicans have yet to hold any hearings on the department’s role in their care.

Democrats say there’s much to probe, including the conditions at the HHS-run children detention centers, the impact of the separations on families, and whether federal officials publicly misrepresented the policy. They also want the administration to produce plans for quickly reuniting 136 children who remain separated from their families under the now-defunct border policy.

“We need to find out what went on, who ordered what and when,” Hoyer said of the administration’s immigration mandates. “They seemingly reversed their policy in some respects, but we need to look very carefully at the welfare of the children related to both physical and mental health.”

Some lawmakers are especially eager to grill Scott Lloyd, who heads the health office charged with housing and supervising those children. Lloyd has also drawn fire for personally intervening to prevent unaccompanied minors in the government’s care from obtaining abortions. It’s been almost a year since he last testified on the Hill.

Over the past two years, Republican lawmakers have rejected dozens of Democratic requests for agency documents and hearings on a range of health issues. Democrats also complain that HHS has ignored their requests for information on their policy decisions. Aides say that trail of unanswered requests will be an investigatory “road map” for Democrats if they win back the House.

“The Trump administration has an attitude that, we’re not going to give you anything,” said Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. “And if you get anything, it’s going to be so heavily redacted you might as well have sent a blank newspaper.”

Asked about Cummings’ characterization, HHS spokesperson Evelyn Stauffer said the agency “takes seriously Congress’s role in our nation’s constitutional system of checks and balances” and responds daily to congressional inquiries.

Democrats stressed they want to avoid politically motivated investigations that ultimately yield few major revelations.

“You saw how long Benghazi lasted — on and on, it was a soap opera,” said Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), referring to the half-dozen House GOP probes into the terrorist attack that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans — a years-long investigation Democrats believed was motivated by the GOP’s desire to damage Hillary Clinton’s candidacy in 2016. “I will not be part of that.”

Democrats also worry that a scorched-earth approach could hamper the chances of passing bipartisan health care legislation, such as a package aimed at lowering prescription drug prices or stabilizing Obamacare’s insurance marketplaces.

With that in mind, Democratic committee leaders said they intend to begin by reaching across the aisle and attempting to work with the administration. But they‘re willing to play hardball if they find themselves stonewalled.

“We only do subpoenas if people don’t cooperate,” Pallone said. “Hopefully, they’ll cooperate.”

Red Sox Must Beware Yankees as Best MLB Wild-Card Team Ever

NEW YORK  On the day the Boston Red Sox sprayed champagne at Yankee Stadium, longtime Sox radio voice Joe Castiglione stood in the dugout before the game, saving a thought for the team across the field.

The Sox would end the regular season a little more than a week later, with the most wins in baseball this year and the most wins by a Red Sox team in any year. The New York Yankees would finish a distant second in the American League East.

“They’re still the Yankees,” Castiglione said. “You still fear them—and our fans do, too.”

They’re still the Yankees, and when they’re at their best, they give you every reason to fear them.

It isn’t automatic that they’ll run past the Red Sox in the American League Division Series the way they ran past the Oakland Athletics, 7-2, in Wednesday’s AL Wild Card Game. But on a night where Yankee Stadium fans amused themselves by chanting “We want Boston” repeatedly, the Yankees team on the field had every reason to believe that they can show up at Fenway Park on Friday night as more than just a worthy challenger to the 108-win Red Sox.

“We wanted Boston,” Yankees reliever Dellin Betances said. “That’s who’s next. Everybody in baseball wanted this matchup.”

It’s the Yankees and Red Sox and all that entails, for the first time in the postseason since the 2004 American League Championship Series no one in either fanbase will ever forget. But it’s more than that.

While this year’s Red Sox won more games than any other Red Sox team in history, the Yankees are the best wild-card team ever.

Start with their 100 wins, the most by a wild card. Then look at the games where they had Aaron Judge in the lineup, before and after he missed 45 games with a broken bone in his hand.

With Aaron Judge back to join Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup, the Yankees are a different, and better, team.

With Aaron Judge back to join Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup, the Yankees are a different, and better, team.Frank Franklin II/Associated Press

With Judge in the starting lineup this season, the Yankees were 72-36, which works out to a .667 winning percentage. Prorate that over a full 162-game season and you end up with 108 wins.

When the Yankees were missing Judge, they went to Fenway at the beginning of August and were swept in four games. That basically ended the division race with nearly two months left on the schedule.

Judge is now back, and he’s doing things like what he did to the A’s Wednesday, when his two-run first-inning home run turned the Wild Card Game heavily in the Yankees’ favor almost as soon as it began. When his double began a four-run sixth inning, it sapped any remaining drama.

“After that homer, the confidence was bigger,” said starting pitcher Luis Severino, who inspired plenty of confidence himself with his four scoreless innings. “We went in after that, and it was over.”

This is what Judge does, and it’s also what the Yankees have done with him in the lineup. He hit .346 with five home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.096 OPS in the 14 games he played against the Red Sox in 2018. The Yankees went 8-6 in those games.

Luis Severino brought confidence to the Yankees with a strong start Wednesday.

Luis Severino brought confidence to the Yankees with a strong start Wednesday.Frank Franklin II/Associated Press

Those numbers may not mean anything when the division series begins Friday, but having Judge in the Yankee lineup means something.

“It’s not just him,” outfielder Aaron Hicks said. “We missed Didi [Gregorius] and Gary [Sanchez] for a while, too. I think it’s big that we’re going to have our full lineup.”

They have their lineup and they have their bullpen, which followed Severino on Wednesday and put the A’s away. That bullpen makes the Yankees scary, but so does that lineup when it’s at full strength.

There’s enough for the Yankees to fear in the Red Sox lineup, too. No one in the Yankees clubhouse Wednesday made any brash predictions about the way this next series is going to go.

“They’ve got a great team over there,” Judge said.

“It’ll be great,” Severino said.

Wednesday felt more like an appetizer for that series, a warm-up act, a chance for the Yankees to show who they are. Severino threw fastball after fastball in a 10-pitch, 1-2-3 top of the first, and then Andrew McCutchen walked to start the bottom of the inning. Judge followed with his 116.1 mph, 427-foot missile to left field to make it 2-0.

That was the hardest-hit postseason home run since MLB.com’s Statcast measurements began in 2015. That record stood for only seven innings, because Giancarlo Stanton hit one even harderestimated at 117.4 mph and 443 feetin the eighth.

By that time, the “We want Boston” chants were getting louder and louder. By that time, the Yankee players in the dugout had to be feeling the same thing.

And up in Boston, the Red Sox had to understand they are about to get a meeting with the best wild-card team in MLB history.

You still fear them.

Saudis insist vanished dissident left its Turkey consulate

Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul insisted on Thursday that a missing Saudi dissident had left its premises before disappearing – directly contradicting comments by Turkish officials who say they believe he’s still inside.

The comments further deepen the mystery surrounding what happened to Jamal Khashoggi, who had been living in a self-imposed exile in the United States while writing columns critical of the kingdom and its policies under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Khashoggi’s disappearance also threatened to further deteriorate relations between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which are on opposite sides of an ongoing four-nation boycott of Qatar and other regional crises.

In a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency, the consulate did not challenge that Khashoggi, 59, disappeared while on a visit to the diplomatic post.

“The consulate confirmed that it is carrying out follow-up procedures and coordination with the Turkish local authorities to uncover the circumstances of the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi after he left the consulate building,” it said without elaborating.

The statement comes after a spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters Wednesday night that authorities believed the journalist was still there.

“According to the information we have, this person who is a Saudi citizen is still at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul,” Ibrahim Kalin said. “We don’t have information to the contrary.”

Paperwork

On Tuesday, Khashoggi entered the consulate to get paperwork he needed in order to be married next week, said his fiancée Hatice, who gave only her first name for fear of retribution.

He gave her his mobile phones for safekeeping, a common occurence as many embassies routinely require that phones be left outside as a security precaution.

Hours later, Khashoggi hadn’t emerged and Hatice recounted how she called his friends in a panic.

“I don’t know what has happened to him. I can’t even guess how such a thing can happen to him,” she told The Associated Press.

“There is no law or lawsuit against him. He is not a suspect, he has not been convicted. There is nothing against him. He is just a man whose country doesn’t like his writings or his opinions.”

The Washington Post, which Khashoggi writes for, said it was “extremely concerned” about him.

“We have reached out to anyone we think might be able to help locate him and assure his safety, including US, Turkish and Saudi officials,” editorial page editor Fred Hiatt said in a statement.

Critical views

Khashoggi has written regular columns in the Washington Post criticising Saudi Arabia’s policies towards Qatar and Canada, the war in Yemen, and a crackdown on dissent and the media and activists that has seen dozens detained.

“I have left my home, my family and my job, and I am raising my voice,” he wrote in September 2017. “To do otherwise would betray those who languish in prison. I can speak when so many cannot.”

Ali Shihabi, head of the Arabia Foundation in Washington, which regularly supports Saudi policy, expressed concern on Twitter about the reports.

“Jamal and I have not seen eye to eye on many issues but having him go missing like this is awful,” he said.

Khashoggi is a longtime Saudi journalist, foreign correspondent, editor and columnist whose work has been controversial in the past in the ultraconservative kingdom. He went into a self-imposed exile in the US following the ascension of Prince Mohammed, now next in line to the throne of his father, 82-year-old King Salman.

Khashoggi was known for his interviews and travels with Osama bin Laden between 1987 and 1995, including in Afghanistan, where he wrote about the battle against the Soviet occupation. In the early 1990s, he tried to persuade bin Laden to reconcile with the Saudi royal family and return home from his base in Sudan, but the al-Qaeda leader refused.

Conversely, Oakland’s bats were stymied as Luis Severino and the bullpen combination of Dellin Betances, David Robertson, Zach Britton and Aroldis Chapman allowed a total of five hits.

Luis Severino Atones for 2017 Wild-Card Disaster With Encouraging Start

One year ago, the Yankees trotted out Severino for a wild-card showdown against the Minnesota Twins. The results were disastrous.

Severino allowed four hits and three earned runs in one-third of an inning before he was pulled. He departed with a comical 81.00 ERA.

This time around, there was no such embarrassment.

Although Severino struggled with his command at times and worked deep into counts as 53 of his 87 pitches (60.9 percent) went for strikes, he showed no signs of the jitters that consumed him in 2017.

The Yankees ace mixed in a hefty number of sliders and changeups alongside a blazing fastball that touched 100 mph across his four innings of two-hit ball. He notched four walks and seven strikeouts, including a big K of A’s shortstop Marcus Semien that got the Bronx Bombers out of a bases-loaded jam:

Severino didn’t allow a hit until the top of the fifth inning—Jonathan Lucroy and Nick Martini opened the frame with back-to-back singles—at which point manager Aaron Boone lifted him in favor of Betances.

Though it wasn’t the most polished outing, the Yankees have to be encouraged with the confidence and composure Severino flashed in such a big spot. He’ll be tasked with keeping things rolling against the Red Sox in the American League Division Series.

Melvin’s Unorthodox Choice to Start Hendriks Backfires

Unlike the Yankees, the A’s didn’t take a conventional approach with their starting pitching selection. Instead, the A’s rolled with reliever Liam Hendriks as their starter, as their rotation was decimated by injuries to Kendall Graveman, Jharel Cotton, Paul Blackburn, Sean Manaea and A.J. Puk.

However, the result wasn’t what manager Bob Melvin had in mind.

While Hendriks entered the evening with a 2.02 ERA in 8.2 innings as a starter, Judge pounced on an early opportunity and smashed a two-run home run to right field in the first inning that gave the Yankees a comfortable cushion.

Had it not been for the errant pitch to Judge, Melvin’s strategy may have proved savvier.

Lou Trivino took over for Hendriks and pitched three one-hit innings while striking out four Yankee batters, and Shawn Kelley produced a scoreless fifth inning.

The bullpen eventually caved in when Fernando Rodney and Blake Treinen combined to allow four earned runs in the sixth, but Hendriks’ early slip-up ultimately set the stage for a deflating night.

Yankees Will Pose a Stiff Test for Red Sox

On paper, Boston projects as a heavy favorite over its chief rival.

The Red Sox are coming off a franchise-record 108-win regular season, and they led the majors with a cumulative team average of .269—a mark far superior to the Yankees’ .248. On top of that, Boston touts a dynamic starting rotation spearheaded by Chris Sale (2.11 ERA), Eduardo Rodriguez (3.82 ERA), David Price (3.58 ERA) and 17-game winner Rick Porcello.

And yet, the Yankees can’t be discounted.

Not only did they win win four of their final six games against the Red Sox during the regular season, but they’re one year removed from a postseason in which they dispatched the 102-win Cleveland Indians in the ALDS.

Considering Giancarlo Stanton torched Boston to the tune of a .371 average, 1.123 OPS, five home runs and 17 RBI across 18 regular-season meetings, the Yankees have to like their chances of making the Red Sox squirm.

Those developments aren’t going to dictate the entire series. But they should provide the Yankees with a shot of confidence as they aim to make back-to-back appearances in the ALCS.

What’s Next?

The Red Sox will host the Yankees for Game 1 of the ALDS at Fenway Park on Friday night.

Butler still hasn’t decided when or if he will practice with the team, but he will apparently play if he is healthy for the Oct. 17 season opener.

Wojnarowski also reported the Timberwolves have been “consistently engaged” in trade talks with the Miami Heat regarding Butler.

The charges on Thursday against Rosmah Mansor were read out by prosecutors at a Kuala Lumpur court.

Chin said the charges against Rosmah, 66, will likely be well received by many in the Southeast Asian nation.

“A lot of people don’t like her because there were many reports of her spending money lavishly oversees. There were many reports of her making political decisions on behalf of her husband,” he told Al Jazeera.

Najib – who also making a court appearance on Thursday – faces 32 charges ranging from money laundering to abuse of power and criminal breach of trust in the effort to uncover how billions of dollars missing from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
