The Milwaukee Brewers are one win away from sweeping the National League Division Series after their 4-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies in Game 2 at Miller Park on Friday.

After their dramatic 10th-inning walk-off in Game 1, the Brewers once again held Colorado’s offense at bay. Jhoulys Chacin, starting on three days rest, tossed five shutout innings with three hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Mike Moustakas, who delivered the game-winning single Thursday, carried over his momentum to Game 2. The two-time All-Star went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Christian Yelich made an impact without recording a hit, going 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.

Meanwhile, offense remains a problem for the Rockies. They have scored four runs in three playoff games dating back to the NL Wild Card Game against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

What’s Next?

German Marquez (14-11, 3.77 ERA) will attempt to keep the Rockies’ season alive against Brewers left-hander Wade Miley (5-2, 2.57 ERA) as the series shifts to Coors Field for Game 3 on Sunday at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Justin Verlander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the Houston Astros hammered four home runs en route to a 7-2 victory Friday over the Cleveland Indians in Game 1 of the American League Division Series at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Alex Bregman opened the scoring with a solo shot in the fourth inning, which was followed by a Josh Reddick RBI single later in the frame. Jose Altuve and George Springer added homers in the fifth as the ‘Stros raced out to a 4-0 lead.

The Indians trimmed the lead to two in the sixth, but the Astros pulled away for good with two runs of their own in the seventh, including a home run by Martin Maldonado.

Astros Look Primed to Defend Title After Playoff Opener

One of the most common questions in the aftermath of Houston’s World Series triumph last year was whether the club had dynasty potential.

An extended rebuilding process, which featured three straight years of at least 106 losses starting in 2011, has yielded a roster with an incredible collection of hitters entering the prime of their careers together. The result was 103 wins during the regular season.

The Astros kept rolling right along Friday. They made quick work of two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber, who allowed six hits, two walks and four earned runs in 4.2 innings, and their pitching staff took care of the rest.

Finding a weakness is hard. Even outside of the loaded lineup and a terrific group of starting pitchers, the Astros also possess a dependable relief corps while also being efficient in the field and on the basepaths.

The Indians couldn’t find an answer in Game 1 and, if Houston maintains that level of play throughout the postseason, a repeat is certainly possible.

Verlander’s Strong Outing Sets Tone for Stacked Staff

All of the tangible factors suggest the Astros are again a serious World Series threat. There are always intangible elements involved in any title run, and one of those is setting the tone in Game 1.

Verlander did that Friday. He kept the Cleveland offense, which ranked third in runs during the regular season, without a hit until the sixth. While his final stat line shows two earned runs in 5.1 innings, he was far more dominant than those numbers suggest.

The 2011 AL MVP also provided the blueprint for attacking the Indians’ hitters for the rest of the Astros staff, including fellow starters Gerrit Cole, Dallas Keuchel and Charlie Morton.

Ultimately, Houston’s offense is powerful enough to win a lot of playoff games, but the club is also destined to play some low-scoring pitchers’ duels. Being able to win either way is crucial to October success, and perhaps no team is better prepared for that than the Astros.

Verlander and the offense both showed that in the playoff opener.

Tribe Must Take Game 2 To Avoid Quick Exit

Knowing all of those things about the Astros and seeing them firsthand Friday, the Indians must head into Game 2 with a must-win mentality.

It starts with creating more offensive noise early in innings. Only once Friday did Cleveland’s leadoff batter get on base—a Yan Gomes single to open the sixth, which is also the only frame the Indians put runs on the board. That’s no coincidence.

The Tribe also need a shutdown performance from Carlos Carrasco, who struggled against the high-powered Astros during the regular season. He allowed eight earned runs on 15 hits and three walks in 13.1 innings across two starts against the AL West champions.

If the Indians drop Game 2, it’s hard to imagine a path for them to win three consecutive games to complete a monumental comeback against the reigning champs.

What’s Next?

The host Astros will attempt to take a commanding 2-0 series lead when they send Cole (2.88 ERA) to the mound Saturday against the Tribe’s Carrasco (3.38 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 4:37 p.m. ET on TBS.

Saudi crown prince says ‘loves working with Trump’

Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has praised the kingdom’s relationship with the current US administration just days after President Donald Trump warned that the Middle East nation wouldn’t survive “two weeks” without American support.

“I love working with him [Trump],” the crown-prince told the US-based Bloomberg publication, adding that the two leaders had “achieved a lot in the Middle East, especially against extremism, extremist ideologies, terrorism and Daesh [the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State in the Iraq and the Levant]”.

The 33-year-old said that it was normal for allies to have disagreements and one must ultimately accept that “any friend will say good things and bad things.”

“So you cannot have 100 percent friends saying good things about you, even in your family. You will have misunderstandings. So we put that in that category.”

At a Mississippi rally on Wednesday, Trump took a jab at Riyadh and said the country would not last “two weeks” if Washington withdrew its military support.

“We protect Saudi Arabia. Would you say they’re rich? And I love the king, King Salman. But I said ‘King – we’re protecting you – you might not be there for two weeks without us’,” Trump said.

This was not the first time that Trump had criticised Saudi Arabia over the issue. As early as 2015, Trump was already saying Saudi Arabia ought to pay more if it wants US protection.

If Saudi Arabia, which has been making one billion dollars a day from oil, wants our help and protection, they must pay dearly! NO FREEBIES.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 26, 2015

Trump’s criticisms have not been limited to Saudi Arabia alone. In his speech to the UN General Assembly, the US president in a similar vein cautioned other unnamed countries against taking advantage of the United States.

“Moving forward, we are only going to give foreign aid to those who respect us and, frankly, are our friends. And we expect other countries to pay their fair share for the cost of their defence,” Trump said at the time.

Trump also hit out at Washington’s NATO partners at a May summit in Brussels, lamenting that “23 of the 28 member nations are still not paying what they should be paying and what they’re supposed to be paying for their defence.”

Saudi spat with Canada

In August, Saudi authorities expelled the Canadian ambassador to Riyadh and severed relations with Ottawa, citing a series of tweets in which Canada’s foreign affairs ministry called for the release of jailed Saudi human rights activists, as the reason for the diplomatic flare-up

Asked why his reaction to Canada differed, the crown prince said the Canadians sought to impose their will on Saudi Arabia and infringe on its sovereignty.

“It’s totally different. Canada, they gave an order to Saudi Arabia on an internal issue. It’s not an opinion of Canada about Saudi Arabia as much as they are giving an order to a different country,” bin Salman said.

“Trump is speaking to his own people inside the United States of America about an issue. And you’ve got the answer now from me.”

Jailed activists

Asked about the fate of Saudi activists detained prior to the lifting of the driving ban imposed on women, the crown prince said that they were not arrested for their activism but rather due to their “connections with agencies of other countries.”

“They have a network, connection with government people, leaking information for the sake [of] these other governments,” he said.

The Saudi government announced in late August that it was seeking the death penalty for five of the activists, including Israa al-Ghomgham, who is the first woman to face capital punishment for human rights-related work, according to rights groups.

WATCH: Qatar’s Emir says blockade has damaged the GCC’s reputation

Bin Salman accused Qatar, which is under a land, sea and air blockade imposed by Saudi, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain, as one of the countries that provided support for the activists.

The blockading quartet accused Qatar of abetting extremists, allegations that Doha has consistently denied.

Watch Post Malone Smash Guitars And Shotgun Beers In ‘Better Now’ Video

Getty Images

If you loved watching Post Malone and Aerosmith smash a guitar onstage at the VMAs, you’ll definitely want to watch the rapper’s new video for “Better Now.”

Released on Friday (October 5), the Adam Degross-directed vid chronicles Post’s touring adventures via a black and white compilation of his finest live moments. When he’s not performing in front of throngs of hyped fans, we see Post shotgunning a Bud Light, riding a scooter, wearing a tiara, and, of course, gleefully smashing an axe. All of this has nothing to do with the breakup-centric lyrics of “Better Now,” but it doesn’t really matter — this is about seeing Post in his element and proving why he’s a bonafide rockstar.

“Better Now” is yet another top 10 hit from Malone’s chart-topping sophomore album, beerbongs & bentleys. It’s been a banner year for the rapper, and he’s not slowing down yet — on October 28, he’s set to throw his inaugural Posty Fest, headlined by himself and Travis Scott. Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors: Clippers Deal Involving Tobias Harris Discussed

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly “had ongoing discussions” about a possible trade for disgruntled swingman Jimmy Butler.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes, the Timberwolves “would prefer to acquire forward Tobias Harris,” but the Clippers do not plan to move him. Haynes added Minnesota’s “asking price has been deemed too high thus far, with multiple players and picks being requested.”

What’s more: Haynes cited sources who said the Timberwolves have not “fully engaged” the Clippers in trade talks because head coach and team president Tom Thibodeau is hopeful he can convince Butler to renege on his request.

ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski previously reported Butler was “most determined” to facilitate a move to the Clippers because they will have two max salary slots available next summer and could pair him with another star in free agency.

Elsewhere, the Miami Heat have reportedly been the most active team in discussions with the Timberwolves to this point in the negotiating process. According to the New York Times Marc Stein, the two sides “were making significant progress” on a deal last week before the Timberwolves amended the terms and talks broke down.

Citing league sources, Wojnarowski added the Timberwolves are pursuing a package that would net them shooting guard Josh Richardson, center Bam Adebayo and a protected 2019 first-round pick.

Butler has not been with the Timberwolves since he requested a trade last month. But according to Wojnarowski, the four-time All-Star “doesn’t plan to miss regular season games if his wrist is healthy.”

China watchers see no evidence of Beijing tampering with elections

U.S. and Chinese flags

One expert said some of the evidence the administration has offered is a normal reaction to the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China. | Brendan Smialowski/AFP/Getty Images

Cybersecurity

Beijing is still involved in cyberattacks against other targets, they say.

White House claims that China is meddling in the midterms do not ring true to experts and cybersecurity firms that have long tracked Beijing’s digital espionage operations and propaganda campaigns.

“I’m not aware of anything credible that ties directly to any targeting from China to election influence,” said Ron Bushar, chief technology officer of FireEye, a cybersecurity firm that has tracked Chinese hackers for years.

Story Continued Below

“There’s certainly no evidence of Russia-style online manipulation or hacking and doxing,” said Adam Segal, a cyber and China expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

President Donald Trump aired the idea last month that Russia isn’t the only country attempting to undermine the U.S. democratic process. And in a speech at the United Nations last week, he alleged that “China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election coming up in November against my administration.”

Vice President Mike Pence echoed those remarks in a speech Thursday. “China has initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 elections and the environment leading to the 2020 presidential elections,” he said at the Hudson Institute.

Neither Trump nor Pence explicitly accused China of mounting the types of social media trolling efforts or multiple, coordinated cyberattacks that the U.S. has accused Russia of carrying out during the 2016 race. But Trump has likened the behavior of the two countries, saying last month that China is “trying to meddle in our elections. And we’re not going to let that happen. Just as we’re not going to let that happen with Russia.”

Yet China watchers have not seen any effort from Beijing to execute a disinformation campaign or propaganda effort to tilt the midterm elections one way or the other.

Plenty of evidence exists, of course, that Chinese hackers have infiltrated U.S. businesses and international human rights groups and are continuing to carry out operations to steal American intellectual property. But the cyber researchers say there’s no sign yet that its hackers have turned their attention on the U.S. political process in any kind of concerted campaign to undermine Trump.

Those include the experts at FireEye, a firm whose work has included uncovering operations to infiltrate American corporations and law firms to steal intellectual property or to hack nonprofits and think tanks to learn of potential policy changes.

In 2015, the company identified a Chinese hacking group it believed was responsible for the massive breach of the Office of Personnel Management, in which highly sensitive security clearance documents on more than 20 million current and former federal employees were stolen. More recently, the firm discovered suspected Russian and Iranian digital influence operations taking place on Facebook and Twitter. It also has uncovered what it calls a massive North Korean hacking operation aimed at stealing millions of dollars from banks around the world.

Some of the evidence the administration has offered — such as an ad in the Des Moines Register — is a normal reaction to the ongoing trade war between Trump and China, CFR’s Segal said. And despite Trump’s claims, he added, China does not seem to have decided yet whether it wants Trump reelected.

He suggested the White House is attempting to divert attention from Russia’s hacking activities to give Trump more ammunition in his trade battle with China or to help distract from domestic political and legal issues.

Recorded Future, a cybersecurity firm that in August said it detected a hacking operation originating from a top university in China to steal U.S. business and government secrets, also cast doubt on the White House claims.

“We have not observed such behavior against U.S. elections even if we’re observing much Chinese activity at large,” Christopher Ahlberg, Recorded Future’s CEO, told POLITICO.

In her own remarks on the subject this week, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen offered a more nuanced depiction of Trump’s charges — saying the alleged Chinese operation is subtler, longer term and “more holistic” than Russia’s in 2016.

While the Kremlin wanted to create chaos, Nielsen argued Tuesday at an event hosted by The Washington Post, Beijing is more interested in a “longer game” of influencing American public opinion about China.

Meanwhile, she said, DHS has seen no sign of attempts to hack election equipment from China, or anyone else. “We currently have no indication that a foreign adversary attempts to disrupt our election infrastructure,” Nielsen said.

Dmitri Alperovitch, chief technology officer at the firm CrowdStrike, which investigated the Russian breach of the Democratic National Committee, said at the same event that China has surged back with cyberattacks on U.S. industry during the past year and a half. That uptick follows a decline after Washington and Beijing struck a deal in 2015 to ban cyber theft for economic purposes.

But, Alperovitch said, “We’re not seeing much on elections.”

Tim Starks contributed to this report.

Trump turns to Hannity and Gingrich ahead of midterms

Donald Trump and Sean Hannity

White House

The president met with the Fox News host and the architect of the 1994 GOP takeover of Congress as prepares a four week push to help them fend off a blue wave.

President Donald Trump huddled Wednesday with Fox News host Sean Hannity and former Speaker Newt Gingrich, according to two people familiar with the plans, a meeting that was originally set to discuss midterm strategy.

The meeting took place at the White House as Trump prepares a four week push to help Republicans keep control of Congress. Gingrich, who led the 1994 Republican takeover of Congress, penned an expansive memo for the president detailing how to hold onto majorities in the Senate and the House, one of the people familiar with the plans said.

Story Continued Below

The former speaker is best known as the architect of the “Contract with America,” the government-shrinking rubric that was a key part of the GOP’s successful midterm strategy that year, when the Republicans picked up 54 House seats and eight seats in the Senate during President Bill Clinton’s first term. One of the pillars of that approach was having candidates unite behind a national message rather than focus on individual races. Reached for comment on the meeting, Gingrich hung up the phone.

Hannity is a friend and informal adviser to Trump who has defended the president amid controversy, and though he frequently offers on-air advice to the White House, he is rarely spotted on the White House campus. He remained in Washington on Wednesday to broadcast his primetime show live from Fox’s D.C. studios.

During a press conference in New York City last week, the president downplayed Hannity’s influence on his thinking, even while praising his coverage of the administration. “Believe it or not, I don’t speak to him very much,” Trump said. “But I respect him.”

In an email statement to POLITICO, Hannity said: “When Politico provides me details and copies of their schedules, I will consider offering mine.”

In July, Trump hired Hannity’s longtime friend and former executive producer, Bill Shine, as White House communications director, formalizing the ties between the administration and the conservative news network.

Trump has ratcheted up his midterm campaigning recently, holding seven events in seven states in the last two and a half weeks. In recent days, however, the president has appeared more enlivened by his potential Democratic foes in 2020 than he is by the midterms.

On Thursday night, he appeared at a rally for Republican senatorial nominee Karin Housley in Rochester, Minn., a state he lost narrowly in 2016 and which he assured the crowd was not, despite its reputation, a Democratic state. Earlier in the week, he made an appearance in Mississippi to campaign for Sen. Cindi Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to replace Thad Cochran and who is running for her first full term.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders did not respond to calls and emails about Wednesday evening’s meeting.

Eminem Infects An Entire City With A Shady Symbiote In ‘Venom’ Video

YouTube

Just in time for the release of Marvel’s blockbuster Venom, Eminem has released the official video for his track of the same name. Unsurprisingly, it’s a dark and murky affair that has plenty of body-hopping symbiote action but, sadly, no Tom Hardy.

The “Venom” visual is a continuation of Em’s video for “Fall,” which ends with him smashing a CD copy of his (oft-panned) 2017 album, Revival. That disc houses an alien symbiote similar to Venom’s, and it causes a bunch of everyday people — and even a dog! — to spaz out and rap Em’s bars while haphazardly infecting one another. After working its way through the city, the virus eventually gets back to the Detroit MC, who in turn morphs into Venom itself in the vid’s final moments.

Along with appearing on the film’s soundtrack, “Venom” is the closing track on Eminem’s recent surprise-dropped album Kamikaze, which hit No. 1, becoming the rapper’s ninth chart-topping solo project. Venom hits theaters today (October 5).
