Florida Beats Joe Burrow, LSU 27-19 in SEC Action Behind Lamical Perine’s 2 TDs

The No. 22 Florida Gators handed the No. 5 LSU Tigers their first loss of the season Saturday, beating their SEC rivals 27-19 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.

Saturday’s tilt was a defensive struggle, as LSU turned the ball over three times and neither team reached 400 yards of total offense.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Florida’s win continued a trend of the Gators scoring home wins over highly ranked LSU teams:

ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfo

The LSU Tigers bring a Top-5 ranking into Gainesville for the fifth time in series history. Florida has won three of the previous four, with the Tigers lone win coming in 1959 when they were No. 1 in the AP Poll and the Gators were unranked. https://t.co/R9Oroe1U1c

LSU is now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while Florida is 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC.

Both quarterbacks were under siege much of the day and failed to find their rhythm. Tigers junior signal-caller Joe Burrow finished just 19-of-34 for 191 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Meanwhile, Florida sophomore quarterback Feleipe Franks went 12-of-27 for 161 yards with one touchdown and one pick.

The primary source of offense for both teams came courtesy of the running game. Running backs Lamical Perine and Jordan Scarlett combined to rush for 150 yards on 31 carries, and Perine scored twice for the Gators. Nick Brossette finished with 95 yards and two scores for the Tigers, while Clyde Edwards-Helaire contributed 55 yards on 13 carries.

LSU took a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Brossette, but Florida bounced back to score a touchdown on the ensuing drive.

Perine put Florida ahead with a two-yard touchdown run, but it was set up by a trick play that saw tight end Lucas Krull throw a 15-yard completion to Franks:

Although LSU got the ball back while trailing by eight, Burrow could not conduct a game-tying drive due largely to a lack of protection from his offensive line.

Poor Offensive Line Play Will Cause LSU’s SEC Demise

LSU has long been known for its ability to bully the opposition in the trenches, but that wasn’t the case during Saturday’s game.

Burrow was under constant pressure, especially in the first half, as he rarely had time to throw or allow routes to develop down the field.

After a four-yard touchdown run by Brossette on LSU’s first drive of the game, the Tigers were driving for another score on their next possession.

Jachai Polite sacked Burrow and forced a fumble at the Florida 28-yard line, however, which ended a promising drive:

Yahoo Sports College Football noted that Saturday marked the third consecutive game Burrow lost a fumble. He was also sacked five times on the day.

While part of that rests on Burrow’s shoulders in terms of sensing the pressure better, it is the offensive line’s responsibility to keep him clean.

After that play, LSU could only muster a field goal for the remainder of the opening half.

In addition to Burrow getting hit with regularity, the LSU offensive line didn’t get much of a push up front for the running game either.

Both Brossette and Edwards-Helaire had modest numbers until Brossette broke off runs of 31 and 47 yards on the same drive in the fourth quarter before scoring from one yard out:

As pointed out by Trey Mongrue of KALB, Brossette had been bottled up for three quarters prior to those long runs:

Trey Mongrue @TreyMongrue

Brossette went from 2.6 ypc to 6.7 in just two runs. #LSU

LSU’s offensive line had a tough time against a strong Florida front seven, and things won’t get much easier for the unit moving forward.

In addition to facing No. 2 Georgia next week, the Tigers have a home date with the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide on Nov. 3.

If the line plays anywhere close to the way it did against Florida, LSU has virtually no prayer of upsetting perhaps the two best teams in the nation.

Georgia and Alabama both have great defenses, but they also are much stronger than Florida on offense, and they are more likely to make LSU pay for not putting points on the board.

Florida Must Defer More to Running Game to Compete in SEC East

Much of Florida’s offensive success in the first half was thanks to the running game, but the Gators got away from it too often in the second half.

Franks did throw a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Moral Stephens late in the second quarter. However, Perine enjoyed success against LSU on the ground and opened the scoring for Florida with a one-yard touchdown run.

Even so, head coach Dan Mullen put the ball in Franks’ hands to open the second half, and it yielded mixed results.

Although his first pass of the half was a 49-yard strike to Joshua Hammond, Franks was intercepted in the end zone by Grant Delpit on the very next play.

Andrew Doak of WWL-TV noted how quickly the narrative on Franks’ passing prowess changed:

Andrew Doak @AndrewDoak_WWL

Starting to type a tweet about severely underestimating Feleipe Franks’ arm, and then he goes and tosses an awful ball straight to Grant Delpit.

Funny how things even out.

Graham Hall of the Gainesville Sun added that Franks has struggled with consistency throughout his collegiate career at Florida:

Graham Hall @GrahamHall_

Those two plays epitomize where #Gators QB Feleipe Franks is in terms of development.

After LSU scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, Florida answered with a touchdown of its own on the ensuing drive.

The key plays weren’t passes by Franks, though; he was on the receiving end of a 15-yard pass by Krull before Perine ran for another short touchdown:

  2. Tua Continues to Take Hawaiian Football to Another Level

Overall, Florida finished with 215 rushing yards and a yards-per-carry average of 5.0. The Gators attempted 43 rushes as well, but that number was aided by their attempts to milk the clock late in the game.

The Gators became far too dependent on Franks for a long stretch of Saturday’s game, and it nearly cost them the victory.

Playing great defense and controlling the clock on offense is Florida’s only recipe for success against quality teams, and it needs to recognize that soon since a date with Georgia isn’t far off.

Lack of Offense Will Prevent LSU and Florida from Playing for SEC Title

LSU and Florida showed Saturday that both have strong defenses capable of making life miserable for the opposition, but they also displayed some glaring deficiencies on offense.

The Tigers seemingly have a competent quarterback in Burrow and a good running back tandem; however, the offensive line let them down too often.

As for Florida, Franks was far too inaccurate, and that level of play won’t hold up when the competition gets even stiffer.

Alabama and Georgia are the cream of the crop in the SEC, and neither LSU nor Florida have enough offensively to compete with them currently.

That is especially true when it comes to the Crimson Tide since quarterback TuaTagovailoa is enjoying a Heisman Trophy-worthy campaign.

Georgia is as explosive as Bama in the passing game, but quarterback Jake Fromm also played in some high-pressure games last season, and he appears far more poised than the likes of Burrow and Franks.

LSU and Florida already have an uphill climb since they have one loss apiece, but with the Tigers still having to play both Georgia and Alabama, and the Gators preparing for an eventual clash with Georgia, it is clear that their offensive shortcomings leave them a notch below the SEC’s elite.

What’s Next?

Florida has a potentially tricky road clash with the Vanderbilt Commodores on tap next week, while LSU will host the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs.

Following the Vandy game, Florida will host Georgia two weeks later in what figures to be a crucial SEC East battle.

Far-right Bolsonaro widens lead on eve of Brazil’s elections

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro widened his lead over fellow election hopefuls a day before Brazilians go to the polls to choose the country’s next president.

In DataFolha polling institute’s latest poll, published on Saturday, Bolsonaro was projected to win 40 percent of the vote on Sunday.

Fernando Haddad, the leftist Workers’ Party (PT) replacement candidate for jailed former president Luiz Inacio ‘Lula’ da Silva, was projected to win 25 percent of support.

Lula topped opinion surveys gauging presidential candidates’ popularity levels prior to renouncing his candidacy last month after being barred from running by Brazil’s country’s top electoral court.

Opinion polls published hours earlier by private-polling firm CNT/MDA suggested Bolsonaro will win 36.7 of the vote in the October 7 election. Haddad trailed in second place with 24 percent of voter support.

If none of the 13 candidates competing for the presidency win more than 50 percent support, a runoff poll between the top two performers will take place on October 28.

A head-to-head vote involving Bolsonaro, a self styled political outsider, and Haddad remains the most likely scenario, with CNT/MDA data projecting the far-right candidate would win such a poll.

On Saturday, Bolsonaro tweeted that Brazilians no longer “had to choose between options that didn’t represent them”.

“Now it is different! We love Brazil, we defend family and the innocence of children, we treat criminals as such and do not involve ourselves in corruption schemes,” he said.

Haddad, meanwhile, claimed he was sure he could count on the Brazilian people to win, “vote by vote, until the last minute”.

“I don’t believe in violence, in the dictatorship, in the lack of liberty. Let’s create opportunities, that’s how you do politics,” he tweeted.

‘Confrontation between opposites’

About 147 million people are expected to vote on Sunday, with participation compulsory for “literate” Brazilians aged 18 to 70.

More than 1,650 positions are up for grabs, including most of the seats in Brazil’s congress and all 27 state governorships.

Polling stations will be open from 8am local time (11:00 GMT) until 5pm local time (20:00 GMT) and results are expected to be announced close to midnight GMT.

The election takes place amid a period of deep polarisation in Brazilian society, with the two frontrunner candidates also widely despised by many voters.

Ricardo Ribeiro, a political analyst at MCM Consultores, said there was a “lot of fear” among the electorate about a possible second-round showdown between Haddad and Bolsonaro.

“Everyone can see the polarisation at large, which is heightened because on one side you have an extreme right-wing option. I don’t think the PT is an extremist party but it is a left-wing party. So you have this confrontation between two opposites,” Ribeiro said.

“The discussion of whether or not democracy can be sustained is now relevant again,” he added.

Bolsonaro, a former army captain, has repeatedly spoken out in favour of Brazil’s military government, which was in power from 1964-85.

He has promised to fill his cabinet with military generals and his running mate, retired army general Hamilton Mourao, hinted last year that he would be in favour of a military takeover of government if corrupt officials were not dealt with by Brazil’s courts.

Bolsonaro has also made numerous overtly discriminatory comments about women, black and homosexual people.

Last weekend, hundreds of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets to march against his candidacy as part of the social media driven and women-led #EleNao (#NotHim) movement. Thousands of Bolsonaro’s supporters also rallied throughout Brazil in response.

Bolsonaro’s combative rhetoric and pledges to crack down on Brazil’s spiralling violent crime rates have found favour amid a backdrop of converging domestic crises.

Many Brazilians are deeply frustrated with the country’s stuttering economy, public security crisis and a political class tarnished by several high-profile corruption scandals in recent years.

‘Clean slate’

Ricardo Luis Couto, a taxi driver in Rio de Janeiro, where Bolsonaro has represented in Brazil’s congress since 1991, said Bolsonaro would help “change the country”.

“The PT are a bunch of robbers, they stole a lot from Brazil, the crisis in Brazil only began after the PT got into office,” 46-year-old Couto told Al Jazeera, referencing the corruption scandals which have rocked the party in recent years.

Malena Alberti, a former PT supporter, said she would also turn out for Bolsonaro.

“Not only is he a military man, his goal is to preserve family values and to go against spreading communism in schools,” 30-year-old Alberti said.

“Bolsonaro is the only one who has a clean slate … he’s going after the criminals, he doesn’t believe in human rights for them, only for good people … he’s in favour of progress and order for the country,” she added.

Despite Bolsonaro’s rise in popularity ahead of Sunday’s vote, he also remains the candidate with the highest rate of rejection among the electorate.

About 44 percent of voters say they would not support him under any circumstances, according to Datafolha.

Haddad’s rejection rate stands at about 41 percent, by comparison, a reflection of many voters’ distrust of the PT.

Contrasting views

A former mayor of Sao Paulo, Haddad has pledged to “make Brazil happy again” and revive the country’s ailing economy by cutting taxes on the poor and creating more employment in a bid to help the nearly 13 million Brazilians currently out of work into jobs.

Pedro Gomes, 63-year-old newspaper stand owner, said he would be voting for Haddad on Sunday as he was “more qualified” than Bolsonaro for the presidency having served as a minister of education under Lula for seven years.

“Haddad is [also] really focused on helping the poorer part of the population, the working class, and bettering education,” Gomes said. “[And] I think Bolsonaro is a very conservative person … he’s not very respectful.”

Pedro Gomes said he would vote for Haddad as he is ‘more qualified’ than Bolsonaro [David Child/Al Jazeera]

But for Sheila Xavier, 35, neither of the two frontrunners offer a solution to Brazil’s problems.

I don’t know who I’m going to vote for, but I know who I’m not going to vote for the PT or Bolsonaro,” Xavier, who is currently unemployed, said.

“All the options right now for president say they are going to help provide better education and end violence but nothing actually happens,” she added.

Earl Thomas Fined $13,369 for Giving Sideline Middle Finger vs. Cardinals

Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas‘ final on-field gesture of 2018 has cost him a lot of money.

Per Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, the NFL fined Thomas $13,369 for showing the Seahawks’ sideline his middle finger after he broke his tibia against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 30.

Thomas suffered the injury midway through the fourth quarter as he was attempting to break up a pass intended for Cardinals wide receiver Chad Williams.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll defended Thomas’ actions during his Monday appearance on 710 ESPN Seattle.

“He had it all just totally figured out and was as emotional as you can get,” Carroll said. “… Give him a little slack. This is a very, very difficult moment that most people wouldn’t understand what that was all about.”

The Seahawks placed Thomas on injured reserve Tuesday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted the six-time Pro Bowler’s injury was a clean break and that he should be 100 percent healthy for free agency in March.

Thomas held out from all offseason activities hoping to secure a new long-term contract. He returned to the Seahawks on Sept. 5, four days before the start of the regular season. The 29-year-old recorded 22 combined tackles and three interceptions through Seattle’s first four games.

Cameroon set for Sunday vote as Paul Biya seeks seventh term

Cameroon’s borders have been closed, security personnel deployed across regions as voters head to the polls on Sunday to elect their next president.

Incumbent Paul Biya, 85, is seeking re-election for a seventh term amid ongoing violence and tensions in the country’s English-speaking southwest and northwest.

Biya faces an eleventh-hour attempt by the opposition parties to forge a unified front under Maurice Kamto, leader of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC).

Cameroon’s electoral commission has long faced accusations of unfairly favouring Biya, who has been in power since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving rulers.

The opposition has accused the government of plans to rig the election, alleging that polling cards have been forged and that voter registration has continued despite the process being officially closed.

Prominent think-tank, International Crisis Group (ICG), wants the concerns of the opposition addressed.

“In the absence of agreement on the rules of the game, opposition activists could contest results, possibly with violence. Fraud, including vote-buying, ballot boxes stuffing and the falsification of results, all of which are common in Cameroon, make such protests all the likelier,” the group said in a statement.

Nkongho Felix Agbor, leader of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA), told Al Jazeera he is unhappy with the lack of unity among the opposition.

“The failure of the principal opposition leaders to form a winning coalition might just be the reason why President Biya will be re-elected,” Agbor said.

“By handing President Biya victory on a platter of gold, these leaders would betray the trust of the Cameroonian people,” he said.

More than six million people have been registered to take part in the elections in the central African nation of 25 million people.

Violent campaign

The election campaign in Cameroon was marked by violent clashes between security officials and opposition party supporters.

The growing fight over language in an officially bilingual country has killed hundreds of people and sent more than 200,000 people fleeing Cameroon’s southwest and northwest regions.

Soldiers have been deployed after separatists threatened to disrupt voting in the English-speaking areas.

The violence was mostly reported from the opposition strongholds, where people had to flee their homes. Many who have been left behind have threatened to boycott the polls.

But the electoral commission said the polls will go ahead as scheduled, adding that some polling stations could be “relocated” to ensure a fair election.

Many election observers groups, including the African Union, have decided to skip the restive southwest and northwest regions.

“The danger of violence around the vote in Anglophone regions is high. But other parts of the country could also be affected,” the ICG said.

Last month, religious leaders in Cameroon warned of a spike in violence, and appealed to both the military and armed groups to drop their guns.

The government, however, says only the separatists should drop their guns.

In the north of the country, more than 230,000 people have been displaced as soldiers tackle Boko Haram fighters from neighbouring Nigeria.

Language war

Separatist leaders in Anglophone regions want to secede and form their own country, called Ambazonia, resulting in their armed confrontation with the Cameroon military.

The armed movement grew out of frustrations in late 2016 by English-speaking teachers and lawyers with the dominance of the French language and the marginalisation of the country’s Anglophone population.

Attacks on symbols of Cameroonian authority, including police killings and kidnappings of civil servants, mounted while local officials fled Anglophone areas, fearing for their lives.

“An opposition victory will create an enabling environment for a long lasting and comprehensive solution to the Anglophone crisis,” Agbor said.

Thousands of Cameroonian refugees are in Nigeria to avoid the violence in English-speaking regions [Al Jazeera]

More than 160,000 people have been internally displaced by the fighting and tens of thousands fled to Nigeria, according to the United Nations.

Soldiers have been accused of burning houses and killing residents in remote Anglophone villages.

The conduct of the Cameroon military was roundly condemned by human rights group, Amnesty International.

“The human rights violations committed by the Cameroonian security forces and authorities have also contributed to creating a pervasive climate of fear, which some observers say has led to a growing sense of alienation among communities in the Anglophone regions,” Ilaria Allegrozzi, Lake Chad Researcher at Amnesty International, told Al Jazeera.

Brett Kavanaugh Has Been Confirmed To The Supreme Court

Win McNamee/Getty Images

After weeks of debate within the Senate as well as widespread protests outside of it, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States. This marks the second time President Trump has placed a conservative justice on the court, after Neil Gorsuch in 2017; it likely means a conservative majority for the court.

The Senate’s vote on Saturday (October 6) was 50 to 48 — the narrowest margin since 1881, the Washington Post points out — and came in nearly precisely down party lines. The vote was apparently interrupted repeatedly, the New York Times reports, including by one woman who yelled, “This is a stain on American history!”

The animosity toward Kavanaugh was felt throughout his confirmation hearings in late September, when Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified that he had sexually assaulted her when the two were in high school. Ford’s supporters included Lili Reinhart, Mandy Moore, Chris Evans, and protesters who flooded Washington, D.C. to hound Kavanaugh’s backers in the Senate. Prominent protesters, including Amy Schumer and Emily Ratajkowski, were arrested with nearly 300 others last week on Capitol Hill.

Hundreds of Kavanaugh opponents also reportedly gathered on the steps of the Supreme Court on Saturday to chant “No means no!” Meanwhile, Trump — himself no stranger to sexual misconduct allegations — praised the Senate for confirming his “GREAT NOMINEE” via Twitter.

Kavanaugh’s currently 53 years old, which means he likely has decades as a justice ahead of him. As a replacement for Anthony Kennedy, a frequent swing vote on cases dealing with LGBTQ rights, abortion, and affirmative action, Kavanaugh could cause the court to lean more conservative on these issues.

Kavanaugh will be sworn in on Saturday “so that he can begin to participate in the work of the Court immediately,” according to a statement on the Supreme Court’s website.

Senate confirms Brett Kavanaugh to US Supreme Court

Kavanaugh's confirmation pushes the Court further to the right [Tom Williams/Reuters]
Kavanaugh’s confirmation pushes the Court further to the right [Tom Williams/Reuters]

The US Senate confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, ending a bitter battle between Republicans and Democrats during a confirmation process that has transfixed the nation following allegations of sexual misconduct against the nominee, which he has strongly denied.

Saturday’s confirmation is seen as a clear win for President Donald Trump in his efforts to further push the court to the right.

Kavanaugh replaces Justice Anthony Kennedy, who retired earlier this year. Although Kennedy was seen as a conservative judge, he was often a swing vote on key issues such as reproductive rights, affirmative action and gay rights.

Kavanaugh’s confirmation comes a little less than three weeks after Christine Blasey Ford publicly accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in the 1980s. According to Ford, the judge groped her and tried to remove her clothing at a party when they were both teenagers. Two other women also came forward with sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh. The judge has vehemently denied the allegations.

Ford’s allegations disrupted what had appeared to be a relatively smooth confirmation process for Kavanaugh. Following the accusations, both Ford and Kavanaugh gave emotional testimonies in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The testimony eventually led to a limited FBI investigation into the allegations.

On Thursday and Friday, Senators and select aides read the secret FBI report. Republicans called it “very thorough”, while Democrats said the report “looks to be a product of an incomplete investigation”.

How Republicans clinched enough votes

Kavanaugh’s confirmation seemed all but sure on Friday when key Republicans and one Democrats, who had been undecided on the nomination, said they would support the judge.

Republican Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of Maine cast their votes in favour of Kavanaugh. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia was the sole member of his party to vote for the nominee. Manchin is running for re-election in his traditionally Republican state.

Protesters gathered on Capitol Hill prior to the vote, chanting “November is coming!” and “Vote them out!”. Some disrupted the vote in the Senate chambers.

A smaller group of Kavanaugh supporters also gathered.

Saturday’s confirmation may give Trump a boost as he continues to hit the campaign trail on behalf of Republicans in the lead up to November’s midterm elections. It may, however, also galvanise Democratic supporters.
