Overmatched Yankees End Season with Shortcomings Everywhere Against the Red Sox

NEW YORK — Look down at the dugout, if you must, and ask why Aaron Boone is still waiting to call on his stacked bullpen. Look up in the sky, if you wish, and ask why that Gary Sanchez fly ball in the ninth inning couldn’t stretch far enough to become a game-winning grand slam.

Or look to the starting rotations, because in three of the four games in a division series that felt close and one-sided at the same time, the Boston Red Sox held a decided advantage over the New York Yankees.

Look where you will, but understand this: After 162 regular-season games and four more over the last five days, the Red Sox were simply the better team. They ended any debate with their series-clinching 4-3 win in Game 4 on Tuesday night, and they left the Yankees to ponder all that went wrong.

That might sound cruel for a Yankees team that won 102 games, if you include their American League Wild Card Game win over the Oakland Athletics and their Game 2 win over the Red Sox. But a team that fell a win shy of going to the World Series a year ago and spent the last 12 months planning to go a step further instead ended up falling one round earlier.

“We’re chasing greatness here,” manager Aaron Boone said when it was over.

If that’s the standard, it’s not cruel to say the 2018 Yankees, with nearly $180 million in high-powered talent, failed. They were good, even very good at times. They weren’t great.

Greatness is reserved for the teams still playing, maybe even for the team that down the corridor was drenching Yankee Stadium’s visiting clubhouse with champagne for the second time in three weeks.

“They outhit us and they outpitched us and they outplayed us,” Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner said.

Alex Cora had a great series, and Aaron Boone didn't, but the managers didn't decide the ALDS, the teams did.

Boone’s in-game decisions didn’t help. For a second straight night, he was too late to pull a faltering starting pitcher, as he left CC Sabathia in to give up three third-inning runs Tuesday. But it’s a bit much to claim Boone cost the Yankees either game, given that they were already trailing by the time anyone would have wanted him to act.

Maybe a quicker hook from Boone would have given the Yankees a better chance at a comeback, but as it turned out, the deciding run Tuesday scored on Christian Vazquez’s fourth-inning home run off Zach Britton, one of those relievers everyone wanted Boone to call on.

The Vazquez home run was a Yankee Stadium special, dropped into the front rows of the right field seats. Hit that at Fenway Park, and it’s just another out.

Then there was the Sanchez fly ball in the ninth, the one that came with the bases loaded and already one run across in an inning in which Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel struggled to find the plate. MLB.com’s Statcast said Andrew Benintendi caught it 346 feet from home plate, which was maybe five or 10 feet too short.

“If that was on the road, it’s probably a home run,” said Neil Walker, who watched it from first base. “If it was to right field, it was probably a home run. That ninth inning was a synopsis of our season, if you ask me.”

Fair enough, because it ended with the Yankees just a little bit short and the Red Sox dancing around in another celebration. It ended with the Yankees crediting their most bitter rivals for being just that much better and playing just that much better.

It’s true and also unfortunate Sabathia chose to use his postgame time to sound off on umpire Angel Hernandez, calling him “absolutely terrible,” according to a tweet by Tim Healey of Newsday.

Sabathia wasn’t wrong, but his timing was bad. Hernandez didn’t decide this series. The two teams did, and the better team won.

CC Sabathia was one of the best pitchers in the game when he helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series. Nine years later, he was one of the reasons they were not good enough to win again.

The Red Sox won in part because the aging Sabathia is still part of the Yankees rotation, while the Sox have starters like Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi and Rick Porcello, who combined to pitch 19 innings in the series and allowed just four runs. Meanwhile, in the three games the Yankees lost, their starters pitched eight innings and allowed 14 runs.

In the last two years, the Sox traded for Sale and Eovaldi, and the Houston Astros traded for Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, while the Yankees traded for Sonny Gray, J.A. Happ and Lance Lynn.

Is it any wonder the Sox and Astros are meeting in the American League Championship Series while the Yankees are going home?

Is it any wonder the team that signed J.D. Martinez (six RBI in the series) is still playing while the team that traded for Giancarlo Stanton (six strikeouts in the series, and zero extra-base hits or RBI) is going home?

Boone spoke about “chasing the perfect offense,” and this series made it all too clear the Yankees don’t have that. They have plenty of power, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but as they found out time after time in four games, the Red Sox simply have more ways to score.

“I think one of their goals in this series was to keep us in the ballpark,” Boone said. “And then coming here where we’re so good at [hitting home runs], they were able to do it.”

He’s right. While Eovaldi dominated in Game 3 and Porcello and the bullpen took over in Game 4, the Yankees sent 68 batters to the plate and didn’t hit a single ball out of the park.

It was only the second time all year the Yankees were held without a home run in consecutive home games. The other time was in April against the Baltimore Orioles, who still managed to lose one of those games.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, scored their first 14 runs in Game 3 without ever hitting the ball out of the park. They scored their first three runs Tuesday without a home run, too.

The Sox moved on, and rightfully so. The Yankees entered another winter of chasing the perfect offense and chasing greatness, and now they can get ready for another season of chasing the Red Sox in the American League East.

As this season and this series both proved, they have a ways to go to catch up.

Trump: Second summit with North Korea’s Kim after midterm polls

US President Donald Trump said his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will take place after congressional elections in November, with at least three locations under consideration.

“It’ll be after the midterms,” Trump told reporters as he flew to Iowa for a political rally on Tuesday. “I just can’t leave now.”

The midterm elections take place on November 6.

The US president said earlier “incredible” progress had been made in bilateral talks with the isolated North Asian country.

Trump and Kim held their first summit in June in Singapore where they discussed ending the reclusive state’s nuclear weapons programme and formally ending decades of hostilities between the two countries.

‘No rockets flying’

Trump was upbeat on de-nuclearisation progress so far, as well as his relationship with Kim, whom he once called “Little Rocket Man“.

“You got no rockets flying, you have no missiles flying, you have no nuclear testing,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “We’ve made incredible progress – beyond incredible.

“We have a very good relationship with Chairman Kim. I like him, he likes me – the relationship is good.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who met Kim on Monday in Pyongyang – his fourth visit this year – said the two sides were now “pretty close” to agreeing on the details for a second summit.

“While there is still a long way to go and much work to do, we can now see a path to where we’ll achieve the ultimate goal, which is the full and final verified denuclearisation of North Korea,” Pompeo told reporters.

Limited progress

Pompeo said Kim indicated he was ready to allow international inspectors into North Korea’s Punggye-ri nuclear testing site and the Sohae missile engine test facility as soon as there was agreement on logistics.

Trump welcomed the recent return of remains of US soldiers killed during the Korean War, but said sanctions could not be lifted without further action from North Korea.

“I’d love to remove them, but we have to get something for doing it,” Trump said.

Kim has yet to comply with US demands for a complete inventory of its weapons and facilities, or to take irreversible steps to give up its nuclear arsenal. Experts said the North Korean leader appeared to be only repackaging and dragging out past pledges.

The World Food Programme said on Tuesday the supply of food remained precarious in North Korea, where one in five children is stunted by malnutrition.

More than 10 million North Koreans, nearly 40 percent of the population, are undernourished and need humanitarian aid, it said.

Red Sox Shut Down Aaron Judge, Yankees to Win Game 4, Advance to ALCS vs. Astros

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 09: Rick Porcello #22 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after closing out the fifth inning against the New York Yankees in Game Four of the American League Division Series at Yankee Stadium on October 09, 2018 in the Bronx borough of New York City. (Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images)

The Boston Red Sox advanced to the American League Championship Series with a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Rick Porcello started for the Red Sox and silenced the high-powered Yankees offense in his five innings. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out one.

The Yankees mounted a rally in the ninth inning, scoring twice off Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel, but Gleyber Torres grounded out to third to end the game.

Steve Pearce and Eduardo Nunez each had two hits for Boston, with the latter driving home one run, to help the Red Sox get by despite Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi combining to go 0-for-8 at the top of the order.

Aaron Boone’s Inexperience Proves Costly for Yankees

In one playoff series, Yankees manager Aaron Boone erased most—if not all—of the good will he generated by leading the team to 100 wins in the regular season.

Boone received criticism for sticking with Luis Severino too long in Game 3 on Monday, when Severino exited in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and the Yankees down 3-0. By the end of the frame, New York trailed 10-0.

Boone didn’t learn from his mistake Tuesday night.

CC Sabathia opened the third inning by hitting Benintendi and allowing a single to Pearce. The veteran left-hander remained in the game despite looking shaky and surrendering a sacrifice fly to J.D. Martinez. Two batters later, Ian Kinsler plated Pearce with a double. Then Kinsler scored on Nunez’s single to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead.

Once again, Boone sat idle as his starting pitcher unraveled. All his best relievers—who were fresh since they didn’t pitch Monday night—remained in the bullpen.

Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1

Hit by pitch, single, 98.7 mph sac fly to deep CF by Martinez. 1-0 #RedSox. Still no one warming. #Yankees relievers will be well rested for when pitchers and catchers report.

Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN

After Benintendi was hit by a pitch, the Red Sox had five right-handed hitters due to bat vs. Sabathia.
Results:
Pearce Single
Martinez Sac fly to deep center 1-0
Bogaerts Ground out
Kinsler Line-drive double, 2-0
Nunez Single 3-0

Joe Sheehan @joe_sheehan

You beat a bullpen team by never letting them leverage their bullpen. Aaron Boone did a great job of beating the #Yankees.

Boone learned the hard way a manager has to have a quick hook in the postseason, especially in an elimination game. Any one of Dellin Betances, Zach Britton or David Robertson would’ve been a sensible replacement for Sabathia in the third inning.

Yankees managers are evaluated on their postseason performance, and the ALDS was a baptism by fire for Boone. He won’t be jettisoned this offseason, but his mishandling of the pitching staff will have him under the microscope in 2019.

Balanced Red Sox Offense Will Push Astros Aces to the Limit

The Astros trio of Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and Dallas Keuchel allowed five earned runs in 17.1 innings in their ALDS sweep of the Cleveland Indians. Houston likely won’t be able to count on that kind of dominance in the ALCS when it faces off with the best offense in MLB.

The Red Sox ranked first in on-base percentage (.339) and slugging percentage (.453) and, according to FanGraphs, were also first in weighted on-base average (.340) and third in weighted runs created plus (110).

Even the unsung heroes are delivering for Boston. Brock Holt hit for the cycle in Game 3, and Kinsler was good as Holt’s replacement in Game 4, going 1-for-4 with the RBI double. No. 9 hitter Christian Vazquez, who hit three home runs in the regular season, went yard in the fourth inning Tuesday night.

Rob Bradford @bradfo

Kinsler. Nunez. Vazquez. All with RBI. Cora could pinch-hit himself right now and it would work

While good pitching tends to trump good hitting in October, the Boston lineup is so stacked it could be the difference in the ALCS.

Granted, the Red Sox may need to score a ton of runs to provide enough of a cushion for a bullpen that remains a trouble spot.

Improving Starting Rotation Easier Said Than Done for Yankees in Offseason

Especially after such a disappointing end to the season, one assumes the Yankees will spare no expense to strengthen their roster in the offseason. Manny Machado and Bryce Harper headline the upcoming free-agent class, and both are destined to be targets for New York.

All the money in the world can’t guarantee the Yankees strengthen one of their biggest issues, though.

Russell Steinberg @Russ_Steinberg

Offseason plans: Get Harper and Machado, hope Romine gets a lot better at pitching

Sabathia, J.A. Happ and Lance Lynn will be free agents. Independent of what those three do, New York will want to add to its starting rotation. The problem is, free agency won’t provide a bounty of elite starting pitchers.

Clayton Kershaw can opt out of his contract but would come with some big question marks. He hasn’t made 30-plus starts since 2015, and his 3.19 FIP in 2018 was the second-worst of his career, per Baseball Reference. As much as signing one of the greatest pitchers of a generation can be risky, signing Kershaw—for the price it would take to get him out of Los Angeles—would be risky.

After Kershaw, you’re looking at Keuchel, Patrick Corbin, David Price—another opt-out candidate—and Charlie Morton as the best options on the market.

In a vacuum, any one of those four would provide an upgrade for the Yankees. But you have to factor in how much New York might have to overpay to land one of the top arms available. Signing Corbin would be nice; signing Corbin for $25 million to $30 million annually would be less nice.

General manager Brian Cashman will have to get creative to build a rotation that can match the Yankees’ star-studded lineup.

What’s Next?

The Red Sox will meet the defending World Series champion Houston Astros in the ALCS. Game 1 is scheduled for Saturday at Fenway Park, with the first pitch set for 8:09 p.m. ET.

Thank you r/relationships for giving me the drama fix I crave

2018%2f04%2f02%2f74%2fheadshot.edeb7By Morgan Sung

This is Ode To…, a weekly column where we share the stuff we’re really into in hopes that you’ll be really into it, too.

Who doesn’t love internet drama?

I, for one, live for it. Watching someone get ratio’d on Twitter fills me with glee. If someone posts screenshots, I’ll meticulously go through every shred of each snarky text. When I scroll past an argument on Facebook, I can’t help but dive into the thread and digest every single comment.

SEE ALSO: Staten Harry is the internet’s cutest lip-sync star

Lurking around internet drama satisfies me more than any Hulu original ever could. When I need to get away from the real world, I turn to vitriolic threads for entertainment. On especially rough days, when I finally tire of bingeing beloved trash shows like Gossip Girl, I venture into the crème de la crème of drama: Reddit’s r/relationships.

Everyone on r/relationships has a bone to pick: no matter how stable you think your relationship is, it wouldn’t stand a chance against this subreddit. Some posters genuinely want advice, from asking for support through grief to admitting to a drug problem to a partner. But if you’re looking for the messiest of messy, sort r/relationships by controversial and buckle up.

Sure, your partner might forget to wash the dishes, or they may play too much Fortnite. But at least they aren’t nearly as bad as the OPs of r/relationship’s controversial tab. Here are just a few gems from these insecure, overbearing dumpster fires.

Exhibit A: The man who feels insecure about his girlfriend’s height. Sorry your girlfriend is too good for you, pal!

Sometimes you can joyfully watch an OP get torn to shreds in the comments, like this woman who won’t stand up against her hateful family. She even goes as far as dismissing their blatant racism as being “very conservative.” Hard yikes, right?

There are examples that make you want to scream, “Get out!! Get out now!” One woman’s boyfriend, feels threatened that all of his partner’s family members are male. It’s bizarre how deep-set his insecurity runs.

Apparently, he’s worried that OP has been “masculinized due to being raised by a dad,” and that by spending time with her family, she’ll be “masculinized even more.”

What does that even mean?

The subreddit’s infamy has even crossed over to Twitter, where accounts like @redditships screenshot and tweet hilariously unfortunate posts.

Indonesians search for bodies of quake victims facing deadline

Rescue workers in Indonesia stepped up their search on Wednesday for victims of a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami, hoping to find as many bodies as they can before the deadline for their work to halt.

The national disaster mitigation agency has called off the search starting on Thursday citing concern about the spread of disease. Debris will be cleared and areas where bodies lie will eventually be turned into parks, sports venues and memorials.

The official death toll from the twin disasters stood at 2,010.

Perhaps as many as 5,000 victims of the 7.5-magnitude quake and tsunami on September 28 have yet to be found, most of them entombed in flows of mud flows that surged from the ground when the quake agitated the soil into a liquid mire.

Most of the bodies have been found in the seaside city of Palu, on the west coast of Sulawesi island, 1,500km northeast of the capital, Jakarta.

More than 10,000 rescue workers are scouring expanses of debris, especially in three areas obliterated by soil liquefaction in the south of the small city.

“We’re not sure what will happen afterwards so we’re trying to work as fast as possible,” said rescue worker Ahmad Amin, 29, referring to Thursday’s deadline, as he took a break in the badly hit Balaroa neighbourhood.

Indonesia fears post-tunsami disease epidemics

At least nine excavators were working through the rubble of Balaroa, picking their way through smashed buildings and pummeled vehicles. At least a dozen bodies were recovered, a Reuters news agency photographer said.

“There are so many children still missing, we want to find them quickly,” said Amin, who is from Balaroa and has relatives unaccounted for. “It doesn’t matter if it’s my family or not, the important thing is that we find as many as we can.”

‘Looking for my son’

The decision to end the search has angered some relatives of the missing, but taxi driver Rudy Rahman, 40, said he had to accept it.

“As long as they keep searching, I will be here every day looking for my son,” said Rahman, who said he lost three sons in the disaster. The bodies of two were found, the youngest is missing.

“This is the only thing I can do, otherwise I would go insane,” he said, choking back tears. “If they stop what can I do? There are four metres of soil here. I couldn’t do it on my own.”

While Indonesian workers searched, the disaster agency ordered independent foreign aid workers to leave the quake zone.

Indonesia has traditionally been reluctant to be seen as relying on outside help to cope with disasters, and the government shunned foreign aid this year when earthquakes struck the island of Lombok.

But it has accepted help from abroad to cope with the Sulawesi disaster.

The disaster agency, in a notice posted on Twitter, set the rules out for foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs), saying they were not allowed to “go directly to the field” and could only work with “local partners”.

“Foreign citizens who are working with foreign NGOs are not allowed to conduct any activity on the sites,” it said, adding foreign NGOs with people deployed should withdraw them immediately.

A few foreign aid workers have been in the disaster zone, including a team from the group Pompiers Humanitaires Francais that searched for survivors, but they have spoken of difficulties in getting entry permits and authorisation.

Some signs of life returning to normal after Indonesia’s tsunami

“This is the first time we encountered such difficulty in actually getting to do our work,” team leader Arnaud Allibert said, adding they were leaving on Wednesday as their help was no longer needed.

‘Political sensitivities’

Indonesian governments are wary of being too open to outside help because they could face criticism from political opponents, and there is particular resistance to the presence of foreign military personnel, as it could be seen as an infringement of sovereignty.

“There are political sensitivities, especially with an election coming up, and sovereignty is another issue,” said Keith Loveard, a senior analyst with advisory and risk firm Concord Consulting, referring to polls due next year.

Sulawesi is one of Indonesia’s five main islands. The archipelago sees frequent earthquakes and occasional tsunami.

In 2004, a quake off Sumatra island triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean that killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.

Jorge went missing in 2015, and 62-year-old Giorgi Bereziani has been looking for him ever since. According to ViralHog, opera house employees in Tbilisi, Georgia saw his posters and called him when they spotted a black and white dog roaming around the neighborhood.

Filming as he approached the pup, who was curled up under a tree, Bereziani asked, “Jorge, is that you? Oh dear boy, how are you, boy?”

Jorge perked up when he heard his owner’s voice. Once he recognized him, he began whining and wiggling with joy. It’s pretty damn adorable.

According to ViralHog, Jorge has a yellow tag on his ear because he was captured by animal control and vaccinated, but released back into the streets when they realized he was harmless.

Now, Jorge is off the streets and in his own loving home. Yeah, we’re crying, too.

Protesters shine torches, lights onto the Sydney Opera House

More than 1,000 protesters, armed with torches, flashlights and smartphones, shone lights on the sails of the Sydney Opera House in Australia on Tuesday night.

Protesters sought to obscure a promotion for a horse racing event called The Everest, after the state of New South Wales’ government strong-armed its way into ensuring the projection on the building would take place.

SEE ALSO: Why putting crisp packs in mail boxes as an act of protest isn’t as effective as you’d think

The Sydney Opera House has a policy in which logos, corporate identities or colours are forbidden from being projected onto its sails, as to not undermine its heritage status.

“Unless for a specific artistic purpose in relation to Sydney Opera House, text or slogans will not be permitted,” the policy reads.

Despite resistance from the Sydney Opera House’s CEO Louise Herron, which culminated in a controversial radio interview, and more than 300,000 petition signatures against the promotion from the public, the projection went ahead.

Protesters pointed their torches and flashlights at the sails, where horse numbers, colours and a logo for The Everest would be projected, in an attempt to wash it out.

They were unhappy with the use of the much-loved Opera House as a billboard for gambling, and the government being lobbied by the racing industry and sections of the media into ensuring the promotion would be displayed.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, previously the director of Tourism Australia, defended State Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s deal with Racing NSW, calling the Opera House “the biggest billboard Sydney has.”

Loud boos and chants rang from the base of the Opera House when the projection took place, and could be heard from a distance.

Across the water, the lights managed to partially wash out the projection.

Although the projection was still largely visible, it was clear that protesters had crashed the party.

Dina Powell is top pick for U.N. ambassador, sources say

NEW YORK — Dina Powell, the Goldman Sachs executive and former senior White House official, is the top candidate to replace outgoing United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, two people familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

Powell, who returned to Goldman in a senior role after leaving her job as President Donald Trump’s deputy national security adviser, is said to be strongly considering the job but also weighing family concerns. Powell already lives in New York, where the UN is based, but has young children and left the administration in part to spend more time with family. She is also said to be happy in her job at Goldman.

Born in Egypt and raised in the United States, Powell is well liked by Trump as well as the president’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner. But she is already coming under criticism from some conservatives on social media who maintain that Powell is a “globalist” not closely enough aligned with Trump’s “America first” approach to foreign policy.

Trump on Tuesday described Powell as a “person I would consider” when asked about her possible nomination. “She is under consideration. We have, actually, many names,” he said.

Other potential successors to Haley — who announced on Tuesday that she would leave her post at the end of the year — include Richard Grenell, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, who previously served as a spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the U.N.; and Kelly Craft, the U.S. ambassador to Canada. Some Trump supporters on Twitter pushed on Tuesday for Grenell over Powell.

People familiar with the matter said the White House had been in touch with Powell about the job and that Powell asked for some time to consider it. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Haley posted a picture on Twitter over the weekend of her on a boat with Powell and Powell’s fiancé, David McCormick, the co-CEO of the global investment firm Bridgewater Associates.

If nominated, Powell, who served in the George W. Bush administration, could face some opposition from hardline conservatives. But she is also close to many Republicans on Capitol Hill, including Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.). Any confirmation would happen in the next Congress.

In addition to family concerns, Powell would also face leaving Goldman after just returning to the firm in a senior client role and as a member of the management committee.

Two people familiar with the matter also cited as a possible concern the need for more extensive financial disclosure for Powell and potentially for family members than was required for her previous role in the White House.

While at the Trump White House, Powell served as both an economic adviser and a specialist on the Middle East and other foreign policy initiatives.
