US outcry grows over Khashoggi with lawmakers demanding action

Washington, DC – A bipartisan and influential group of US senators called on President Donald Trump to investigate and potentially sanction Saudi Arabia under US human rights law for the disappearance and alleged murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

In a letter released by Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the senators invoked terms of the 2012 Magnitsky Act requiring the president “to determine whether a foreign person is responsible for an extrajudicial killing” and demanding a report to Congress within 120 days.

“Our expectation is that in making your determination you will consider any relevant information, including with respect to the highest-ranking officials in the government of Saudi Arabia,” the letter signed by 22 senators said on Wednesday.

The Magnitsky Act provides for an automatic trigger if members of Congress request an investigation. The law sought to punish Russian officials for the death of Russian accountant Sergei Magnitsky in a Moscow prison in 2009, and led to the sanctioning of a number of high-ranking Russians by the Obama administration.

Khashoggi, 59, a Saudi national who had been living in the United States for the past year, entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 2 to obtain papers for his planned marriage. His fiancée reported him missing when he did not come out. Turkish investigating authorities have told state-owned media Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate.

What happened to Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi?

The Saudi government has denied that and said he left the building unharmed.

Saudi-US turning point?

The incident has received widespread attention in the US where it prompted outcries from friends and colleagues of Khashoggi, free press advocates and critics of the Saudi war in Yemen.

Details of the Turkish allegations – that Khashoggi was ensnared at the consulate by a 15-man Saudi hit squad, killed and dismembered – have shocked American political elites.

Analysts say Khashoggi’s suspected death is likely to mark a turning point in US-Saudi relations and will pose a challenge to the Trump administration, which has relied on the Saudi monarchy to assert its policy goals in the Middle East.

“The administration has decided that, of all the Arab actors in the region, they are banking on the Saudis as the critical linchpin for at least three elements of their regional policy: containing and confronting Iran, securing Saudi help in the seemingly hopeless Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and counting on the Saudis to help moderate oil prices,” said Aaron David Miller, a Middle East analyst at the Wilson Center in Washington.

“Into this context comes this incredibly brazen, horrible act. So how does the administration then reconcile that with 600-plus days of policy? I don’t know where they go. They will work to find the balance. I don’t know if they will succeed or not,” Miller told Al Jazeera.

Transparency

President Trump didn’t speak about Khashoggi until October 8 when he told reporters at the White House he didn’t “like” what he was hearing and that he expected the situation to “sort itself out” – words that brought the president criticism. Trump amplified his concern in comments on Wednesday at the White House calling it a “bad situation” and promising to demand answers from Saudi officials.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders issued a statement saying National Security Adviser John Bolton and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about Khashoggi, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo followed up with an additional call to the crown prince.

“In both calls they asked for more details and for the Saudi government to be transparent in the investigation process,” Sanders told White House reporters.

The biggest potential impact of Khashoggi’s disappearance is going to be on perceptions in the US of Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Salman, who has cultivated an image of being a progressive reformer and a leader working to bring the kingdom into a more democratic future. In a widely publicised visit to the US last year, bin Salman reached out to segments of society with visits to Washington, New York, Boston and Los Angeles.

“If there is more evidence, and as one would expect, it turns out he was actually killed deliberately, I think it is going to be a turning point in how American political elites view Saudi Arabia. It is going to be a game-changer in perception,” Shibley Telhami, a pollster at the University of Maryland, told Al Jazeera.

Friends and former colleagues of Khashoggi announced a #JusticeforJamal campaign at a press conference in front The Washington Post newspaper, where he had been a well-regarded opinion columnist, and organised a vigil by about 35 people in front of the Saudi Embassy in Washington.

“It’s obvious this has reached beyond anything else,” said Medea Benjamin, a leader and co-founder of the CodePink anti-war group, who has been challenging US officials on American military support for the Saudi campaign in Yemen.

Saudi government planned Jamal Khashoggi hit: NY Times

“It’s ironic that you can kill all of these poor schoolchildren and so many thousands of innocent people in Yemen and yet the US continues to sell them weapons,” Benjamin told Al Jazeera. “There is a now a person who has disappeared who is more important to the people in power because he was a journalist and works for a US paper and was a US resident.”

‘Stop sending arms’

Senator Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican who led an effort to block US arms sales to Saudi Arabia that fell four votes short in the Senate last year, said he would seek another vote.

“If they’re responsible, or even if there’s any indication that they’re implicated in killing this journalist that was critical of them, we’ve got to stop sending them arms,” Paul told a Louisville a radio station, News Radio 840 WHAS.

Trump recently embarrassed the Saudis saying in US political rallies the monarchy is propped up by US military power and “wouldn’t last two weeks” without US support.

Mongi Dhaouadi, a regional director of United Voices of America, a non-profit group that promotes Muslim civic engagement in the US, said Khashoggi was preparing to launch a new pro-democracy group called DAWN, an acronym for Democracy in the Arab World Now.

Khashoggi’s friends fear that’s why he may have been killed by the Saudi government.

“He was actually going to head the group. He was going to be the CEO,” Dhaouadi told Al Jazeera.

“In terms of the Trump administration, we don’t think that they will change. We have hopes that within Congress, especially the Senate at this point, there are some voices on both sides of aisle.”

‘Hell to pay’

Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican close to Trump and among the 22 senators demanding action, told reporters on Capitol Hill “there would be hell to pay” if the Turkish government’s allegations are true.

Is Saudi’s crown prince really a reformer?

“If this man was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, that would cross every line of normality in the international community,” Graham said.

Other signatories to the Magnitsky letter include Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, as well as Senators Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Marco Rubio of Florida, Ben Cardin of Maryland, and Tim Kaine of Virginia.

Kaine, a Democrat and former vice-presidential running-mate to Hillary Clinton, said in a tweet: “Jamal Khashoggi is a Virginia resident, so his disappearance is personal to me.”

Representative Gerry Connolly, a Virginia Democrat, said at the #JusticeforJamal press conference he viewed Khashoggi as a constituent.

“The fact that Jamal was not a US citizen does not mean that he was not my constituent,” Connolly said. “My district has citizens and non-citizens alike and they are entitled to the protection of the United States laws and diplomatic activity on their behalf. And I take Jamal’s personal security as seriously as I would any constituent of mine.”

Defenders of press freedom decried Khashoggi’s disappearance and called for a sharp response by the US government. National Press Club President Andrea Edney said in a statement: “If harm has come to him, those responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The group PEN America, which advocates for free expression of journalists and artists worldwide, joined the #JusticeforJamal campaign.

“It’s a bit difficult to say with certainty exactly what has happened and we want to remain hopeful that Jamal is alive and there will be a resolution to this that returns him to his family,” Summer Lopez, a senior director at PEN America, told Al Jazeera.

But, “if the Saudi government carried out a murder inside a diplomatic facility in Turkey, that is a pretty drastic situation and will likely have some real repercussions for the US-Saudi relationship,” Lopez said.

“The reaction we’ve seen from Congress already is quite significant.”

The Razer Blade 15 Dual Storage edition has a hybrid HDD/SSD drive

Razer’s premier gaming laptop is getting a big update.

Less than six months after releasing the Blade 15, Razer is already rolling out an update to its gaming laptop line with its new Blade 15 Dual Storage edition.

SEE ALSO: 10 video games we can’t wait to lose ourselves in this holiday season

If you couldn’t tell from its name, the Razer Blade 15 Dual Storage edition comes with two drives, a smaller SSD for performance and a larger hard drive for capacity. The Blade 15 Dual Storage edition is a little bit thicker than the earlier Blade 15 models because of this additional 2.5-inch drive, but Razer took advantage of the extra space by adding in a gigabit Ethernet port to improve connectivity. For a gaming laptop especially, this is more than an acceptable tradeoff.

The new Razer Blade 15 Dual Storage edition

The new Razer Blade 15 Dual Storage edition

One visual aspect that most associate with Razer’s gaming computers is its Chroma lighting keyboard features. In its dual-storage models, the company is including a full single-zone RGB Chroma keyboard. This allows users to illuminate their entire keyboard with any one of 16.8 million colors. While the earlier Blade 15 laptops allowed users to select per-key colors, unlike the previous models, this new keyboard allows secondary functions, such as the “@” or “#” symbols, to be backlit as well.

Razer calls its Blade 15 line “the world’s smallest 15.6-inch gaming laptop” and the dual-storage version, weighing in at 4.48 pounds, is even a little lighter than its prior iterations. It has a full HD 60Hz display, up to 6 hours of battery life, packs an 8th-generation Intel Core i7 core processor, and has 16GB of dual-channel RAM.

The Razer Blade 15 Dual Storage edition is available Oct. 10, and starts at $1,599 for a 128GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. At that price, the dual storage edition is a full $300 less than the earlier, higher-end Blade 15 models.

Fitting in nicely as an entry-level Razer gaming laptop, the company says that many of the qualities users have come to love about the Blade 15, like its performance and build, are kept intact in the dual-storage edition. And, for fans of the single storage model, there’s a Razer store exclusive Mercury White edition coming later this year.

While the dual-storage edition certainly does lose some cool features like the per-key Chroma option, it certainly makes up for it on the pricing end. We reviewed the Razer Blade 15 earlier this year and called it “damn close to being the perfect gaming laptop.” Razer’s latest dual storage offering will only open the door to its near-perfect gaming experience to the hardcore gamers who may have been priced out before.

US accuses Venezuela spies of ‘involvement’ in suspicious death

Hundreds of Venezuelans demanded justice at the funeral of an opposition activist who died in government custody, as the United States called out Caracas for its “involvement” in his death.

Fernando Alban – a 52-year-old Caracas city council member accused of taking part in a failed drone attack on President Nicolas Maduro – was in pre-trial detention on Monday at the time of his death.

Authorities say he committed suicide by jumping from a 10th-floor window of the headquarters of the state intelligence service after asking to go to the toilet.

Alban was arrested on Friday at the capital’s international airport upon arrival from a trip to New York City to galvanise world opinion against Maduro’s socialist government.

Opposition leaders, backed by several foreign governments, have accused Maduro’s government of torture and killing Alban.

Both the United Nations and the European Union have called for an investigation into his death.

Alban was buried in a cemetery on Wednesday in the eastern part of the capital after mourners walked several kilometers in a funeral procession.

“Maduro’s dictatorship is death,” said one placard held by a young man. “Justice!” another said.

Maduro accuses Colombia’s president of assassination attempt

Among them was Maria Betancourt, who never met Alban, but felt the need to show support for the late political leader.

“He represented in his fight what we all want: liberty in Venezuela, a democratic Venezuela,” she said. “We want what everybody in the world wants – opportunity. Not this disaster we’re living.”

‘Involvement’ condemned

The United States joined the chorus of condemnation from the international community over Alban’s death – and pointed the finger of blame at Maduro.

“The United States condemns the Maduro regime’s involvement in the death of Venezuelan opposition councilman Fernando Alban,” the White House said in a statement.

“The Trump administration will continue to increase pressure on the Maduro regime and its insiders until democracy is restored in Venezuela.”

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted his own condemnation, placing blame for Alban’s death on Maduro’s government.

We condemn the death of Venezuelan opposition member Fernando Alban at the hands of the Maduro regime in the strongest terms. The regime continues to kill innocents & those standing up for democracy. We stand w/ the Venezuelan people & demand the release of political prisoners. pic.twitter.com/6lkoWLpjuR

— Vice President Mike Pence (@VP) October 10, 2018

On Wednesday, Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab, who is close to Maduro, again dismissed the idea of an assassination.

“He died from blunt force trauma linked to the fall… There is no evidence of mistreatment prior to the fall,” Saab told reporters, reading from an autopsy report.

Alban was among at least 15 people arrested and charged for alleged participation in the August 4 drone incident, which Maduro has portrayed as an assassination attempt.

Elon Musk denied he’ll be replaced by James Murdoch as Tesla’s chairman, an alleged shakeup that was the subject of rumors on Wednesday.

Murdoch, who’s due to end his stint as 21st Century Fox’s CEO, was named in a Financial Times report as the lead candidate to succeed Musk, according to two sources who spoke with the newspaper.

Musk remarked simply that the report was “incorrect” on Twitter.

The younger son of media mogul Rupert, Murdoch also serves as a director on Tesla’s board, where he has done so since 2017.

As part of Musk’s settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over his tweet announcing a plan to take Tesla private at $420 a share — which some assumed was a weed-related wink, although Musk denies that, too — he’s coughed up $20 million as a penalty. Additionally, he’s relinquishing his chairmanship of Tesla, where he’ll sit out for three years, but remain CEO.

Tesla’s search is very much on for a new chairman, with Bloomberg reporting that names like former Vice President Al Gore, Jim McNerney of Boeing, and Alan Mulally of Ford Motor Company have been floated as potential candidates.

Who knows? Perhaps it could be a job for you.

The incredible saga of the barefoot runner, a local Facebook group, and some acorns

Local Facebook really is something else. Here’s the saga of the barefoot runner and “I Love NE Minneapolis.” You might want to sit down for this.

An irate “competitive barefoot runner” took to his neighborhood Facebook group to complain about the abundance of acorns littering the sidewalks.

SEE ALSO: Facebook’s former News Feed chief will take over Instagram

“This makes my training sessions very difficult,” he posted. “So this is just a friendly reminder to please keep your sidewalks clear of any acorns or other debris that might injure those whom are active members of the barefoot running community, including myself.”

Then he passive aggressively dropped the possibility of filing a complaint to the city, before closing with a chipper “Peace and Love!”

As you can imagine, people couldn’t possibly take the post seriously.

“If only there were something you could put on your feet to protect acorns and other debris,” one Minneapolis resident commented.

Someone suggested running with a leaf blower. Another suggested running with squirrels. Many straight up refused to sweep their sidewalks so that one person could run.

But it appears the OP wasn’t joking about reporting the group. He posted a screenshot of his complaint and said that although he wanted to “resolve this in a neighborly fashion,” and that the “threatening and hostile nature” of fellow group members pushed him over the edge.

“Unfortunately you have all forced my hand,” he responded, like a medieval king on a power trip.

In the screenshot of the code violation report he wrote, “poorly maintained sidewalks littered with acorns, as well as cyber-bullying and threats from the community.”

As @alex_cono — the hero who managed to grab all of these screenshots — noted, the OP has a history of passive aggressive neighborhood posts. In a previous post, he referred to his significant other as his “soul partner” and asked if anyone else knew of “SERIOUS” unicycling communities.

It’s possible that he’s just a troll, but knowing the shenanigans and spats that go down on Nextdoor, this barefoot runner could actually be mad that people aren’t sweeping their sidewalks for him.

Democrats not giving up Kavanaugh battle

Nancy Pelosi

Supreme Court

The conservative jurist is settling into a lifetime appointment, but Democratic leaders think they can still discredit him.

Democrats are showing no signs of backing off their battle against newly minted Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, pressing forward with legal fights to unearth potentially damaging records that didn’t go public during the white-hot nomination contest.

Democratic leaders are taking steps to obtain and release detailed documents and emails about the sexual assault allegations against him and disputed aspects of his service during the Bush administration.

Story Continued Below

While Democrats are strategizing to get what they consider the most potentially damaging records out soon, it’s all but certain that the process will drag on for years and perhaps even decades.

Many Democrats are skittish about talk of impeaching Kavanaugh, an effort that seems doomed in the Senate even if Democrats win control of the House in midterm elections next month. But there seems to be a broad consensus on the left to keep up the fight for documents lawmakers believe should have been made public before the vote on Trump’s second high court nominee.

Democratic lawmakers say it’s worth keeping up a reminder of how Republicans tried to short-circuit the process and gave short shrift to Ford’s allegations.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi followed through Wednesday on a promised Freedom of Information Act request demanding records related to the background investigation the FBI reopened into Kavanaugh after Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that he sexually assaulted her during high school, a claim Kavanaugh categorically denied.

“The FBI’s supplemental background investigation appears to have been significantly limited in scope to ensure that a thorough investigation would not take place, numerous witnesses would not be questioned, and numerous questions would not be asked – including whether Justice Kavanaugh deliberately misled Congress on multiple subjects,” Pelosi wrote in her letter seeking documents about the FBI’s interviews and the ground rules for the inquiry. “The public must know what limitations were imposed on the FBI and who imposed them, so this never happens again.”

At a Senate hearing earlier Wednesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray confirmed that the White House limited the scope of the re-investigation, but he said the bureau followed its usual process.

Pelosi’s call to force the release of more information on Kavanaugh comes despite the fact that she is opposed to talk of impeaching him. Asked at a San Francisco Chronicle editorial board meeting about whether she supports such an effort, Pelosi said, “No.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal and five of his Democratic Senate Judiciary Committee colleagues filed their own FOIA suit last month, demanding access to all the Kavanaugh-related records at the George W. Bush Library in Dallas as well as Kavanaugh’s correspondence with the CIA and the Justice Department while at the Bush White House.

One aide involved in the effort said Democrats are intent on finding records that could show Kavanaugh was less than candid during his confirmation hearing, when he denied involvement in discussions about Bush-era programs like warrantless wiretapping and aggressive interrogation practices, as well as knowing that Senate aide Manuel Miranda — who was in regular contact with Kavanaugh about judicial nominations — had access to Senate Democrats’ internal memos.

“We’re interested in credibility,” said the Democratic aide, who asked not to be named. “The question is whether he was up front with the committee….We’re focused on Miranda.”

Last Friday, the Archives formally reported that it had finished processing a tiny fraction of the records the Senate Democrats are suing for. Archives officials have estimated they have between 1 million and 3 million documents and emails from Kavanaugh’s files and emails accounts. The notice sent Friday said just four items, totaling 20 pages, were processed for release thus far in connection with the Senate Democrats’ suit.

Under federal law, Bush and President Donald Trump have 60 business days to look over those records and any others before they are made public. A 30-day extension is allowed. In this case, however, the National Archives has determined that only part of the four items — believed to be emails — should be released at the moment.

Republican senators note that senators had access to a large chunk of Kavanaugh’s record: more than 500,000 pages, largely from his time as an attorney in the Bush White House counsel’s office. That’s a larger volume of records than was made public about any other Supreme Court nominee.

In August, National Archives officials said they could complete the review of about 900,000 of Kavanaugh records by late this month. However, that set only included the records formally requested by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who invoked a “special access” process for congressional requests.

Democrats say the GOP should have waited at least until the Archives finished reviewing the 900,000 pages.

“Less than 10 percent of Judge Kavanaugh’s White House record has been disclosed,” Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois said during debate on the nomination last week. “Those documents are going to come out some day, and those who are quickly voting for him now without reading them run the risk that they are making a mistake, which they are going to have to explain at a later time.”

Archives officials said Democrats were not entitled to use the “special access” process because they did not control any committee empowered by law to make such a request.

So, Blumenthal and the other Democratic senators turned to the FOIA process and the courts instead.

“I filed a FOIA suit to force disclosure of millions of pages of Judge Kavanaugh’s documents that have been hidden from the country,” Blumenthal said on the Senate floor. “The majority leader chose to vote without seeing those documents, I have no intention of stopping in this effort until they have been disclosed — and they will be. They will come out, adding to the cloud and the stain.”

National Archives spokeswoman Laura Diachenko said the agency is still working through those requests and that records recently processed by the archives remain subject to review by the White House and Bush’s representative.

“We will continue to respond to the numerous FOIA requests for Kavanaugh related records,” Diachenko said. “All of the existing PRA notifications, which include the one posted last Friday for the four records, are still currently pending review. “

A White House spokesman declined to comment on the continued campaign by Democrats to discredit Kavanaugh. Senate Republican leaders also declined to comment.

However, a Senate GOP aide portrayed the Democrats’ persistence as both sour grapes and overkill.

“I’m reminded of what Sen. Cornyn said over the summer when he outlined the Democrats’ extreme, no-holds barred strategy to try and take down this exemplary jurist: Get a grip,” said the aide, who asked not to be named.

Some of those pressing for access to the Kavanaugh files insist they’re already getting traction. A lawyer for the Electronic Privacy Information Center, which filed suit last month to obtain records about his work on surveillance issues, said it got more information Wednesday indicating the Bush Library has records likely to shed light on that topic.

Last week, officials notified the group that there are 11 emails Kavanaugh wrote while a White House lawyer to a key Justice Department attorney involved in the surveillance issue, John Yoo. EPIC was also told Kavanaugh sent more than 200 emails mentioning the PATRIOT Act or surveillance during his counsel’s office tenure.

On Wednesday, EPIC was informed that there’s an even larger pool of emails received that could be of interest. Yoo sent 183 messages to or copying Kavanaugh, while Kavanaugh received nearly 2,000 messages discussing the PATRIOT Act or surveillance.

“Any category he was generating emails on, there were a lot more emails he was receiving,” EPIC’s Alan Butler said. ” I think we have substantial evidence that he was intimately involved in the process of developing these programs.”

Still, Butler acknowledged, they have yet to see the actual documents. Asked if many of the records could be just news clippings, the EPIC attorney said, “It’s possible.”

One major challenge Kavanaugh critics face is that the Presidential Records Act allows presidents to sharply restrict access to many of their records until 12 years after leaving office. That means many sensitive records about advice to Bush, discussions among his top advisers and about potential nominees for federal positions are unlikely to be released until 2021 at the earliest. And if the Archives deems the material restricted, there is no judicial review available.

Democrats may be able to speed up the process somewhat if they take control of the House or Senate after this fall’s elections. They could then issue priority “special access” requests like the one Grassley made. They could also issue subpoenas.

Records housed at government agencies like the Justice Department or the CIA aren’t subject to the 12-year rule but other approaches can be used to withhold those files from the public, sometimes for even longer periods than those in presidential archives. Congress generally gets better access, but agencies have ways to resist. The president can also assert executive privilege to fight any disclosures.

Under the regular process, however, delays in obtaining records from presidential libraries can be prolonged — even staggering.

Last year, POLITICO asked the Bush Library for records about Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who served as a top Justice Department official and was later nominated by Bush to serve as U.S. Attorney for Maryland.

In May, the library provided an update. “There are 115 requests ahead of yours in this queue. Out best estimate at this time is that it may be completed in approximately 22 years,” supervisory archivist Shannon Jarrett wrote.

When files from President Bill Clinton’s White House became subject to public requests in 2006, the conservative group Judicial Watch asked for records on the failed health care reform effort spearheaded by then-first lady Hillary Clinton. The next year, the group sued.

The Archives said an estimated 3 million records were responsive to Judicial Watch’s request. The group later agreed to limit the request to about 1 million documents. Archives officials said that was still too many to require them to process. But a federal judge ruled that they had to process the whole set.

The records emerged over the past decade, often in chunks 50,000 or 100,000 pages at a time. The final set came earlier this year, some 12 years after the records were first requested.

At least one Supreme Court nominee has faced disclosure of their White House records after taking the bench: Justice Elena Kagan.

The vast majority of her records as a lawyer and policy adviser to President Bill Clinton were made public in 2010 when President Barack Obama nominated her to the Supreme Court. More than 160,000 pages of files were released to the media and sent to the Senate. However, about 1,600 pages were held back on privacy grounds. A small number of documents were also shared with the Senate under a “committee confidential” restriction, but were not released to the public at that time.

A smattering of those records went public in 2014. They included annotated, draft legal briefs from her files in connection with Clinton’s Supreme Court showdown with Paula Jones, the Arkansas state employee who accused him of sexual harassment.

Ariana Grande’s ‘Breathin’ Video Is Here And It’s Definitely Not What You Expected

Getty Images

If you subscribe to Ariana Grande‘s official YouTube channel, there’s a good chance you screamed upon seeing a new upload titled “Ariana Grande – breathin” on Wednesday evening (October 10). The singer has said she plans to make a music video for the fan-favorite Sweetener jam, and this appeared to be it… that is, until you actually hit the play button.

Turns out, the video consists entirely of the “breathin” audio set to footage of Piggy Smallz, Grande’s pet pig that she shares with her fiancé, Pete Davidson. It’s a hilarious troll move on Ari’s part, but also a weirdly satisfying one. After all, “breathin” is a song about overcoming anxiety, and watching a fluffy, cute-as-hell pig walk around for three straight minutes is oddly relaxing. Who knew?!

Upon Sweetener‘s release in August, “breathin” emerged as a streaming favorite and is now in the top 20 at radio. Earlier on Wednesday, Grande thanked fans for supporting the track while also listing all the priorities on her docket: “Tryna announce american sweetener tour dates asap, tryna get u the docuseries asap and tryna shoot a breathin video bc i forgot to (hope there’s still time),” she wrote on Instagram.

Only time will tell if Grande will release a legit, human-starring video for “breathin,” but for now, let’s give Piggy Smallz her moment in the spotlight. Truly, a star is born.
