Malaysia to abolish death penalty

Malaysia’s cabinet has agreed to abolish the death penalty and halt pending executions, a move that has been hailed by international human rights groups and foreign diplomats.

A proposed bill on abolishing capital punishment is likely to be discussed by the government when the Malaysian parliament meets on Monday.

“All death penalty will be abolished. Full stop,” a Channel NewsAsia report cited Law Minister Liew Vui Keong as saying.

Keong called for a halt on all executions until the decision is in effect, saying: “Since we are abolishing the sentence, all executions should not be carried out.”

“We will inform the Pardons Board to look into various applications for convicts on the [death penalty] waiting list to either be commuted or released,” he said.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo confirmed that the cabinet, which met on Wednesday, had resolved to end the death penalty.

“I hope the law will be amended soon,” he told AFP news agency.

More than 1,200 people are on death row in Malaysia, which mandates hanging as punishment for a wide range of crimes including murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking and treason, among others.

‘Welcome move’

The decision was welcomed by rights advocates and foreign diplomats.

“We strongly welcome announcement by Malaysian Government of (its) intention to abolish the death penalty,” Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt, the Swedish ambassador to Malaysia, wrote on Twitter.

“Impressive & bold move,” he added.

We strongly welcome announcement by Malaysian Government of intention to abolish the death penalty. Impressive&bold move. Equally impressed by moratorium w/ immediate effect on further execution of death penalties. Malaysia Baharu again sets an example 2 b emulated. @MalaysiaMFA

— Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt (@DDannfelt) 11 October 2018

Amnesty International also cheered the news, calling it “an astounding announcement.”

The rights group had urged Malaysia to “completely abolish the death penalty for all crimes, with no exceptions”, calling it a “terrible stain” on the country’s human rights record.

“The death penalty is barbarous, and unimaginably cruel,” N Surendran, an adviser with Lawyers for Liberty, a Malaysian rights group with close ties to the centre-left People’s Justice Party, said in a statement.

“Once the death penalty is scrapped, Malaysia will have the moral authority to fight for the lives of Malaysians facing death sentences abroad,” he added.

Many Asian countries such as China and neighbouring Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, still impose capital punishment, while 142 countries worldwide have rejected it.

GOP closes in on Heitkamp knockout — and control of the Senate

Heidi Heitkamp

“There’s a level of arrogance and rash statements that doesn’t reflect the typical North Dakota,” Sen. Heidi Heitkamp said of her challenger Rep. Kevin Cramer’s recent statements. | Alex Wong/Getty Images

Elections

The North Dakota Democrat is down in polls. And if she loses, Democrats can all but kiss their hopes of winning the Senate goodbye.

Republicans say they’re on the cusp of delivering a knockout blow to North Dakota Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp — and virtually ending Democrats’ hopes of winning the Senate.

Heitkamp is down in public polls by a significant margin, and most political handicappers think Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) is the favorite to beat her. If she goes down, Democrats would basically have to run the table in every other battleground race to take the chamber.

Story Continued Below

Republicans have had Heitkamp losing by double digits in their private polling for weeks, according to a GOP strategist working on Senate races. Democrats argue the race is closer but acknowledge she is down even in their polling, after her vote against Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court.

“At this point, it’s really ours to lose,” said Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.). “The race, probably to her detriment, has been nationalized around the Supreme Court and Trump.”

In an interview on Wednesday, Heitkamp acknowledged she’s facing an uphill battle but hinted that she believes Cramer could still self-immolate, pointing to his comments on sexual harassment and a new trade deal with Canada. In a story published last weekend, Cramer told The New York Times that sexual assault accusations and the #MeToo campaign against Kavanaugh were a “movement toward victimization” of men. He also was scolded by Canadians over his comments about new NAFTA negotiations.

“There’s a level of arrogance and rash statements that doesn’t reflect the typical North Dakota, common-sense contemplative, work-together kind of attitude,” Heitkamp said. “You can say all these crazy things, but sometimes the crazy things you say and how you behave has real consequences here.”

And her allies assert that Heitkamp is far from done. They point to her universal name ID, retail campaign skills and her surprise win in 2012 despite being down in the polls. In a state of just 750,000 people, and where perhaps 150,000 votes could win the race, winning over even 15,000 voters in the next month could make the difference, they argue.

“This is certainly the state that seems to be the most vulnerable. But that was probably the case a year ago,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). But he added, “It’s a tiny state, where you can make a lot of progress” meeting voters in person.

Democrats say their private polling shows Heitkamp’s numbers recovering after dropping by double digits during the Kavanaugh fight, according to two Democrats familiar with the race. Heitkamp came out against Kavanaugh shortly before he was confirmed.

She’s also seen a gush of online money into her campaign coffers since she came out against Kavanaugh, Democrats say. But she needs to mount a dramatic comeback in order for Democrats to have any shot at taking the Senate. It’s a long shot in any case, but nearly impossible if she loses.

Democrats need to net two seats to win majority, even as a half-dozen of their incumbents are in tough races. The party has four opportunities to flip Republican-held seats. But if Heitkamp loses they’d need to win three of those four, plus hold nine seats in states carried by Trump in 2016.

“I’m very confident that we’re going to take that seat” in North Dakota, said Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the No. 4 Senate Republican, who’s often cautious about prognosticating. “And I have a lot of confidence that we’re going to keep the majority.”

Cramer, who declined an interview for this story, told the Times that Heitkamp is “toast” if the election becomes nationalized. And Democrats acknowledge that Heitkamp will lose if voters cast their ballots based primarily on party affiliation — her retail political talents notwithstanding.

“North Dakota’s going to be a test … for tribalism and respect for retail politics,” said former Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.). “Retail politics still exists in North Dakota. And I would venture to say most North Dakotans have seen or know Heidi.”

Heitkamp has been counted out before. After her 2012 victory, she famously held up a copy of the Fargo Forum that blared her opponent Rick Berg’s 10-point lead in pre-election polling. But the polls are even more dire this time. A Fox News survey last week had Cramer up by 12 points, and rolling averages show Heitkamp’s in the most danger, by far, of any Trump-state Democrat.

This “has from Day One been the most vulnerable Senate seat in the country. From Day One,” said Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.). “It may be a surprise to Washington, but it’s no surprise to North Dakota.”

Yet for all the talk that her vote against Kavanaugh doomed her, Heitkamp believes the race will turn on other issues: her state’s struggles to sell and store its soybean crop amid Trump’s trade wars, for example, or her work fighting to lift a ban on oil exports.

“Things will change between now and the election,” she said.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee scrapped a cable ad buy after Heitkamp’s polling numbers dropped during the Kavanaugh controversy, but the GOP campaign arm still has $350,000 reserved during the final weeks. Democrats say they believe Republicans canceled that ad buy to seed a narrative that the race is already over.

Senate Leadership Fund, the main outside super PAC for Senate Republicans, has $1.5 million reserved over the homestretch, according to media buying data.

Still, Democrats will outspend Republicans over the airwaves: Heitkamp and her Democratic allies have more than $3 million reserved in the final weeks of the race, and that’s before her big fundraising infusion. Heitkamp has raised more than three times the amount Cramer has this election cycle.

Because North Dakota is so cheap to advertise in compared with other states, and because polling the state is notoriously difficult, Democrats say they will not pull out of the state no matter how bad it might look from the outside. The main super PAC for Senate Democrats, Senate Majority PAC, has $1.3 million reserved there over the final month.

After speeding through the Capitol looking stressed and avoiding reporters during the Kavanaugh fracas, Heitkamp was chatty and relaxed on Wednesday. She spent the weekend in her home state, and said she returned to Washington content with her opposition to the Supreme Court nominee.

“Overthinking the politics, I can’t do that anymore,” she said of her votes and how they might affect her campaign. She said it didn’t make sense to “compromise what you think is the right thing because it may be the politically expedient thing.”

Heitkamp has repeatedly said if she merely wanted to win reelection, she would have supported Kavanaugh. Whether that’s true remains to be seen. But her closest friends in Congress say she genuinely has no regrets.

“She’s as determined as ever. I talked to her yesterday, a long talk. She’s giving it all she has, and she will up to the very end,” said Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who was the only Democrat to support Kavanaugh. “She feels good about her vote, her purpose and her reasons.”

Twitter’s Jack Dorsey doesn’t use a computer or a tablet

You think you really need that shiny new MacBook Pro? Well, if Jack Dorsey can run Twitter and Square — both multi-billion-dollar companies — without a computer, laptop or a tablet, then you probably don’t need one, either.

So how was this incredible fact discovered? Well, Dorsey’s tweets do typically seem like they’re all posted from a mobile phone. So Quartz reporter Dave Gershgorn straight up asked Dorsey whether he uses a computer or a laptop, to which Dorsey simply replied “no.”

SEE ALSO: Twitter to prohibit ‘dehumanizing language’ in new rules

Later in the thread, Dorsey was asked whether he at least uses a tablet, but the answer was, again, negative.

And a desperate attempt by Microsoft’s Paul Fabretti to get Dorsey to start using a Surface Go was met with a cruel, blank stare by Dorsey (or at least that’s how we imagine him looking at his phone).

Everyone’s job and routine is different. If I had to type this text on an iPhone I wouldn’t be too happy about it. But it’s still impressive that someone who runs two major tech companies can do it without using a computer — well, according to him, anyway.

Jamie Lee Curtis claps back at Fox News’ misguided tweets on guns

Jamie Lee Curtis has clapped back at Fox News for its misguided tweet about her views on gun control.

On Wednesday, Fox News shared a truly dumb take about Curtis, star of the Halloween re-boot.

SEE ALSO: Fox News reveals it has no idea how movies work in a very misguided tweet about Jamie Lee Curtis

“Jamie Lee Curtis wields firearms in new ‘Halloween’ movie despite advocating for gun control,” the conservative news outlet tweeted.

Yeah, so to break that down, Fox News was claiming that because Curtis’ character Laurie Strode uses guns in a horror movie, that Curtis’ own personal views on guns were hypocritical. Because she’s clearly not acting in a movie.

“It was just silly, because they were trying to make a point without ever asking me what I really think,” Curtis told USA Today on Wednesday.

“I am vocal about common-sense gun safety and gun laws,” she told the publisher. “For instance, I fully support an assault weapon ban, I fully support a bump stock ban.

“I fully support the Bill of Rights. And fully support the Second Amendment. And have absolutely no problem with people owning firearms if they have been trained, licensed, a background check has been conducted, a pause button has been pushed to give time for that process to take place. And they have to renew their license just like we do with automobiles — which are weapons also.”

Notably, Curtis herself reportedly consulted on the types of weapons her character would use in the film, to defend herself against Halloween‘s villain and Strode’s own personal boogeyman, Michael Myers. Curtis reportedly made sure automatic weapons were not part of Strode’s strategy.

But Curtis’ personal views on guns are exactly that — hers. Not that of her character.

“I’m an actress who’s in slasher movies,” she told the publisher. “I have to be responsible for my own personal choices in my own personal life. But I am an actor for hire. And honestly, if I had made my career as a pacifist actor, I would never have worked, ever.”

Nikki Haley will not be missed in Palestine

The abrupt resignation of the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, on October 9 has provoked much speculation about her motivation to do so and her political ambitions. But for Palestinians – and certainly, for many other small nations targeted by Haley’s angry diplomacy for the last two years – the news brought about a momentary feeling of relief.

Over the past year and nine months, Haley happily led the Trump administration’s vicious efforts to undermine the Palestinian struggle for rights and self-determination, spewing hatred against Palestinians and singing the praises of Israel at every opportunity she got. There can be no rational explanation for Haley’s absurd resentment of Palestinians and love of Israel, other than sheer opportunism.

In his bestselling book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Michael Wolff describes Haley as an “opportunist” who is as “ambitious as Lucifer”. And judging by her career path, she likely is.

Haley was almost completely unknown, even nationally, when President Donald Trump selected her to be the face of American diplomacy at the UN early last year.

Born into an immigrant Indian family, Nimrata “Nikki” Haley’s career as an accountant took several unexpected turns leading to her being the governor of the state of South Carolina for two terms. If she was arguably suited to that post, she was most certainly unqualified to become the top US foreign policy emissary at the world’s most important international institution.

As soon as she was confirmed to her new position, she developed a disposition that would be remembered by Palestinians as the most aggressive and arrogant among all US envoys to the UN since the establishment of Israel and destruction of Palestine in 1948.

It could be argued that Haley’s anti-Palestinian behaviour at the UN was the natural outcome of deepening US support for Israel.

True, the US-Israel pact at the UN is as old as Israel itself. But the last two decades have taken this relationship to new heights. The already slanted US position on Israel’s occupation of Palestine and its brazen use of its veto power to shield Israel from international criticism reached their zenith during the term of George W Bush’s ambassador to the UN, John Negroponte (2001-2004).

The “Negroponte doctrine” – the instant rejection, and if necessary, vetoing of any UN Security Council resolution critical of Israel – remained a staple in US foreign policy until today, with the notable exception of Resolution 2334.

On December 23, 2016, the Obama Administration abstained from voting on a resolution that condemned Israel’s construction of illegal Jewish settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Obama’s final act, although feeble and ineffective, violated the main tenet of US diplomacy at the UN. Expectedly, Resolution 2334 enraged Israel and its supporters in the new Trump administration.

Soon after, Haley arrived in New York with a clear and urgent mandate: to right that “wrong” and reaffirm the US’ unconditional support for Israel at the UN.

Eager to reassure Israel that it has not been abandoned by Washington, Haley launched her pro-Israel campaign at the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in March 2017, using bizarre, tactless language.

“There’s a new sheriff in town,” she announced before 18,000 conference attendees, intoxicated with excitement.

“I wear heels. It’s not for a fashion statement,” she declared. “It’s because if I see something wrong, we’re going to kick ’em every single time.”

By “something wrong”, Haley was referring to any censure of Israel, or demand of accountability and respect for international law at the UN, as in Resolution 2334, which she described as a “kick in the gut.”

The US doesn’t “have a greater friend than Israel,” she affirmed.

Haley stayed true to her words. She turned the UN into a platform for defending Israel and demonising Palestinians and their supporters within the international community.

The “Haley doctrine” went even further than Negroponte’s, as the latter was largely confined to blocking resolutions critical of Israel. Haley, on the other hand, stood up for Israel at every opportunity, and, along with Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon, she conspired to punish countries and UN agencies, including UNESCO and UNRWA, for recognising Palestinian rights or providing aid to Palestinian refugees.

Haley, therefore, tried to manage the UN from within – rewarding and punishing as she saw fit – to end what she strangely perceived as the organisation’s systematic targeting of Israel.

Haley recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and called for the relocation of her country’s embassy before the Trump Administration officially did so in December 2017.

“The capital should be Jerusalem and the embassy should be moved to Jerusalem,” she told the right-wing Christian Broadcasting Network during an interview in May 2017.

In a visit to Israel in June 2017, she accused the UN in a press conference held jointly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “bullying” Israel. “If there’s anything I have no patience for, it’s bullies – and the UN was being such a bully to Israel because they could,” she said.

The notion, that of the UN’s supposed unfairness to Israel, was at the heart of Haley’s skewed discourse. A few months later, in November 2017, she spoke about why she visited Israel:

“I went to Israel to see firsthand the country the United Nations spends half its time on. Unfortunately, I’m not kidding – it’s ridiculous. It seems like the rough breakdown at the UN is half the time on Israel and half the time on the other 192 countries.”

Of course, if Haley took time to mull over this statement, she would have realised that the unresolved occupation of Palestine would have not been a recurring issue at the UN if it were not for the blind and unconditional US support of Israel. But, of course, such introspection is of no importance to Haley, who continued her anti-Palestinian tirade for months to come.

In December 2017, the self-proclaimed anti-bullying diplomat threatened those who voted in favour of an Egypt-sponsored draft resolution that expressed “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem.” She vetoed the draft, of course, which was supported by all other members of the Security Council, calling the vote an “insult” that wouldn’t be forgotten.

On May 14, Israeli snipers opened fire at unarmed protesters at the fence separating besieged Gaza from Israel, killing more than 60 and injuring thousands. Haley was the only member of the Security Council who couldn’t comprehend the international outrage over one of the worst Israeli massacres in years.

“No country in this chamber would act with more restraint than Israel has,” she lectured the other ambassadors soon after they stood a moment of silence in memory of Gaza’s victims.

While her term at the UN was short-lived, her impact was devastating and scarring for international efforts to bring justice for Palestine and for the Palestinian people’s faith in the effectiveness of the UN altogether. And while Haley was duly criticised by Palestinians for impeding international law, she was endlessly celebrated by Israel and its friends in Washington for being a “true friend of Israel”.

“She’s a great champion of Israel in the Security Council,” said Elliott Abrams, a neo-con who served as the deputy national security adviser during the presidency of George W Bush.

Soon after her resignation was announced, Danon spoke fondly of Haley for challenging “anti-Israel bias” in the UN.

“Thank you for your support for the State of Israel, which helped lead to a change in Israel’s status in the UN,” he tweeted, writing with a tender tone: “Thank you for your close friendship and common paths. Wherever you are, you will continue to be a true friend of the State of Israel.”

The US-Israeli love affair at the UN and their ongoing war on Palestinian rights are likely to remain unchanged, even after Haley’s departure. But she personally did so much damage with her bullying tactics that she certainly won’t be missed in Palestine.

UAE violating Somalia arms embargo: Report

A new report by a panel of experts from the UN Sanctions Committee seen by Al Jazeera reveals that the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) has continued to violate arms embargo imposed on Somalia.

The report, yet to be released, notes that the UAE has carried on with the construction of a military base in Berbera in Somalia’s Somaliland region, including the transfer of military equipment despite international resolutions against these arms shipments.

The UAE began construction of the base last year, under an agreement with officials in Somaliland, a northern region of Somalia that self-declared independence from the latter in 1991 following a civil war.

The UAE is investing in developing a port, which is strategically located close to Yemen, where UAE troops have been fighting as part of a Saudi alliance against Houthi rebels since 2015.

Somalia has previously urged the UN Security Council to take action against the construction of the UAE base in Somaliland.

The report also noted that the panel of experts from the UN did not receive a response from the authorities of Somaliland when they were asked to comply with the embargo in place.

When the panel asked the UAE to present them with more details of the construction of the base, the response was; “The UAE concluded all agreements with the Somali regions based on constitutional powers granted to the heads of those regions to achieve security, stability and prosperity for the Republic of Somalia and its people.”

In September 2017, maritime police in the Somali state of Puntland intercepted a ship heading from Yemen to Somalia and seized weapons found on board, the international team of experts said.

In a review by the panel on some of the Chinese weapons found in the vessel, Beijing said no Chinese company had violated the sanctions, without providing further clarification.

The Serbian authorities, when reviewing the number of machine guns seized onboard the ship, said that they had sold 1,000 submachine guns to the UAE in 2016, with the UAE armed forces as the final user of those weapons.

The panel said it has not received any response from the UAE when asked to clarify why weapons were on board the seized ship.

UAE Ambassador to the UN Lana Nusseibeh said she could not comment because the report had not yet been published.

“That being said, the UAE is fully aware of all Security Council resolutions and is in full compliance with the sanctions imposed,” Nusseibeh told Reuters news agency.

“We also reaffirm our continued cooperation with the Monitoring Group throughout its mandate.”

The Security Council imposed an arms embargo on Somalia in 1992 to cut a flow of arms to feuding armed groups, who ousted President Mohamed Siad Barre and plunged the country into war.

The curious case of a stolen photo, turned into a fake tweet, then an ad

It’s the nature of memes to be spread around the internet, meaning that we often don’t know (or care) where they came from.

But writer Ira Madison III is not down with a photo he posted being taken, turned into a fake tweet, then used for an ad.

SEE ALSO: Banksy’s shredded art stunt is a beautiful meme now

In a series of tweets, Madison accused publication Betches and dating app Hinge of “shady behavior,” after they allegedly engaged in just that.

On Sunday, Madison tweeted a photo, showing a friend using Goldfish crackers as breadcrumbs for macaroni and cheese.

“I’m not going to call out the white friend who did this by name, but as the holidays approach just know that using goldfish as breadcrumbs for macaroni and cheese IS NOT OKAY,” reads the tweet.

By Tuesday, the photo was then allegedly taken by Betches for its Instagram account, then given a fake caption written by a user who doesn’t even exist on Twitter.

“I’m dead…this guy on Hinge invited me over dinner and when I got there proudly displayed his mac n cheese with goldfish breadcrumbs,” reads a tweet by @SwirlGirlChi, whose account can’t be found.

The now-deleted post was sponsored by Hinge.

Madison said he doesn’t normally care about stolen content online, but wasn’t too impressed at these businesses making money off him.

Why did they do that? So they could repurpose it into an AD for @hinge the dating app. So this dumb account created a fake Twitter account off someone else’s tweet so they could get money from sponsored content money from @hinge. pic.twitter.com/wa30yXd8Qs

— Ira (@ira) October 10, 2018

Betches Media explained to Mashable via email that Hinge sent the post as advertisement to publish on its Instagram.

“We were under the impression it was original content created by their team. As soon as concerns were raised about this meme, we removed it from our channel,” the statement reads.

“We apologize for unintetionally [sic] misattributing this content, as we highly respect original content creators and will be more diligent in vetting our content for proper attribution in the future.”

Of course, pilfering content on the internet is hardly shocking or new, long helping brands and identities build their profile on social media.

In March, Twitter cracked down on “tweetdeckers,” who steal tweets, then work to get them viral on their own accounts which often have large fanbases. They’re then able to make money by charging to retweet, a practice which has been documented by BuzzFeed.

Hinge did not immediately respond to a request for comment when approached by Mashable.

LeBron James, Lonzo Ball, Lakers Beat Stephen Curry, Warriors in Preseason Clash

John Locher/Associated Press

LeBron James‘ Los Angeles Lakers did something his Cleveland Cavaliers could not do in June: get a win over the Golden State Warriors.

It just wasn’t James who led the way.

Brandon Ingram scored 26 points and Kyle Kuzma added 22, as the Lakers earned a 123-113 preseason victory over the defending champs at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

James finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in 18 minutes.

LeBron-Led Lakers Starting Five Showing Promise

Every Lakers starter finished with a positive plus-minus. Every Warriors starter but Damian Jones finished with a negative plus-minus.

The differences were minuscule, but small wins are still wins against this Warriors team.

The key to Ingram’s development this season appears to be getting to the line. He’s already had two games where he attempted 15-plus free throws this preseason, including an eye-opening 17 on Wednesday. The Lakers should be concerned that he’s only hit one three through five games, however.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope may be the biggest benefactor of playing with LeBron. He’s an excellent spot-up shooter and solid defender who is going to swish his way to the bank with some easy 20-point nights like he had against Golden State. His total lack of playmaking skills won’t even be noticeable on a team that has LeBron and Rajon Rondo in the starting lineup.

Rondo will hopefully not keep that starting spot long. He threw up a goose egg on the scoreboard in 19 minutes and was outplayed by Lonzo Ball, who made his return from a knee injury. Ball had seven points, four rebounds and four steals.

The Lakers are far from title contenders, so they should be continuing to push their chips all in on Ball’s development. Rondo is more of a one-year rental until they figure out another superstar to pair with LeBron, so showcasing Ball alongside James is best for all sides over the long term. Lonzo just needs to work his way back into game shape.

But for now, the starting lineup looks solid.

Warriors Big Three Looks Ready for Regular Season

Draymond Green (and DeMarcus Cousins, obviously) didn’t play, but the Warriors’ three other top-20 NBA players remain good at basketball.

Stephen Curry led all Warriors with 23 points and five assists, getting to the line nine times. Curry was responsible for 81 percent of the Warriors starting five’s free-throw makes. Interestingly enough, Curry also only took three three-pointers.

Could he be losing his touch? Who’s to say? (Me. And the answer is absolutely…not.)

Klay Thompson did the most damage from beyond the arc for the Dubs, knocking down a team-high four triples on his way to a 20-point night.

Kevin Durant had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

I don’t know. These guys are good. They don’t even really need the preseason. So…kudos to them.

What’s Next?

The Warriors and Lakers will play each other again Friday to close out their preseason schedules. Then the Warriors will open their regular season Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder, while the Lakers travel to Portland for a matchup with the Blazers on Thursday.

You’ve likely fallen into Candy Crush addiction or know someone who’s been affected.

There’s a new Candy Crush in town, ready to sink its claws into anyone looking for their newest mobile puzzler fix. Candy Crush Friends Saga launched Thursday for iOS, Android, and Windows devices.

SEE ALSO: Here’s how to use Walkie-Talkie in WatchOS 5

The series’ classic candy-swiping and matching mechanics are still here, but this iteration implements updated design, integral characters, and new modes of play.

While previous iterations have featured various colorful characters, Friends Saga better integrates them into the game, giving them a bigger and better purpose. For instance, each character has a favorite candy, and collecting a certain amount of it will prompt a booster to be thrown onto the board. This lets you rack up additional points and climb the mountain to success.

The developers went wild and clearly had fun with the characters.

Odus, Mr. Toffee, Nutcracker, Red Rabbit, Tiffi, Yeti, and Misty are featured throughout 380 levels. Even better, Candy Crush has decided to award these zany personalities with their own backstories. It remains to be seen if this adds anything to the gameplay, but they act as your effervescent, helpful teammates. As you rack up points, you can unlock new styles for the characters you have and new ones entirely.

For Friends Saga, King (the developer behind Candy Crush) has given the game a slick new 3D makeover along with a smattering of challenging elements, such as animals hidden beneath the boards’ layers.
