Trump to host US pastor Brunson at White House

US President Donald Trump has welcomed the release of US pastor Andrew Brunson, who is on his way back home from Turkey following two years in detention.

The evangelical pastor was convicted of terror-related charges and sentenced to three years, one month and 15 days in jail on Friday.

But he was immediately freed, taking into account the time already served and good conduct during the trial.

The US president tweeted from a rally in Ohio that he expected to see Brunson in the Oval Office “most likely on Saturday” after a “full check-up”.

Brunson, 50, whose detention caused a diplomatic row between Washington and Ankara, left on a US military flight bound for Germany on Friday.

Welcoming the pastor’s release, the White House said Brunson will arrive at a military base in Maryland on Saturday.

“We look forward to his return home where he will be reunited with his family,” the White House said in a statement.

‘We remain deeply concerned about the continued detention of other United States citizens in Turkey and around the world, and urge the resolution of all these cases in a transparent and fair manner.”

The US preacher was greeted at the base by US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, who gave Brunson a US flag during a refueling stop at an air base.

“When I presented him with the US flag, he immediately kissed it”, Grenell said in a tweet.

I welcomed Pastor Brunson & his wife to Germany on their refueling stop. He’s almost home thanks to @realDonaldTrump.

— Richard Grenell (@RichardGrenell) October 13, 2018

After the court decision, Brunson travelled to his home and then left for the airport in Izmir province with his wife Norrine.

“This is the day our family has been praying for – I am delighted to be on my way home to the United States,” Brunson said in a statement after his release.

‘The independence of the judiciary’

Brunson was arrested in 2016 as part of the government crackdown in the wake of a failed 2016 coup attempt. He had been under house arrest since July.

Brunson was accused of links with Kurdish rebels and supporters of Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkey blamed for a failed 2016 coup attempt.

Gulen has denied any involvement.

Brunson, who has lived in Turkey for more than 20 years, had denied the charges and maintained his innocence.

Friday’s court decision ends the friction over his case that caused a crisis in relations between the two NATO allies.

“The United States and Turkey have a number of mutual concerns regarding regional security and stability, and we look forward to working together on these issues,” the White House said after pastor’s release.

The US claimed was held unjustly and repeatedly called for his release.

With Washington slapping sanctions on Ankara, the crisis also put pressure on the already-falling Turkish lira in August, sparking an economic crisis.

Following the court ruling, an official for the Turkish presidency said the verdict showed the independence of the judiciary in the country.

Brunson’s release is being heralded as a win for Trump [Jonathan Ernst/Reuters]

“Like the Turkish courts, the Republic of Turkey does not receive instructions from any body, authority, office or person. We make our own rules and make our own decisions that reflect our will,” Fahrettin Altun, the presidency’s communications director, said in a statement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had insisted that he had no sway over the judiciary and that the courts would decide on Brunson’s fate.

While Brunson’s release is expected to ease tensions between the US and Turkey, further strains remain.

NASA scientist Serkan Golge, a dual US-Turkish national, was jailed for seven-and-a-half years in February on terror charges, a term reduced to five years last month.

Two Turkish employees of US diplomatic missions remain in jail. One of them, former Adana consulate staffer Hamza Ulucay, was on Friday denied release in a separate court hearing.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Turkey to free “quickly” other Americans in detention after Brunson was released.

Clayton Kershaw Will Never Be the GOAT As Long As Postseason Flops Continue

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw (22) reacts after giving up two runs during the fourth inning of Game 1 of the National League Championship Series baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, in Milwaukee. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)

Jeff Roberson/Associated Press

What do Clayton Kershaw and pumpkins have in common?

They both get carved up in October.

Is that a bit of a cheap shot? Sure.

Does the Los Angeles Dodgers ace deserve it after yet another embarrassing performance on the October stage? Yes.

To put a finer point on it: After Kershaw’s latest flop Friday in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, it’s worth wondering if he’ll ever cement his status among the greatest pitchers of all time.

In a scant three innings against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park, Kershaw coughed up five runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Most damningly, he surrendered a game-tying home run to Milwaukee reliever Brandon Woodruff, who was hitting from the left side.

Ouch.

Jae C. Hong/Associated Press

It was far from the dominant showing the Dodgers were counting on and teed up a 6-5 Brewers victory.

There’s plenty of series left. Los Angeles can bounce back, and Kershaw will almost assuredly pitch again.

But it was yet another checkered chapter in Kershaw’s up-and-down postseason history. Great as he’s been overall, his bumpy playoff resume is a significant blemish on his permanent record.

After Friday’s outing, Kershaw’s career postseason ERA sits at 4.26 in 133 innings. That’s enough of a sample size to draw conclusions, and they aren’t great. In fact, they’re downright mediocre.

All too often under the game’s brightest lights, Kershaw has wilted.

No one denies he’s a generational talent. He’s won three NL Cy Young Awards, an NL MVP trophy and amassed 50.7 WAR since 2011, according to FanGraphs, easily the highest total of any pitcher during that span.

In March 2017, The Ringer’s Ben Lindbergh made a credible case for Kershaw as a historically special arm, in the company of hallowed, top-tier Hall of Famers.

With all that stipulated, he needs to do it now. He needs to dig in his heels and prove his mettle when the pressure and stakes are cranked up to eleven.

Kershaw is 8-8 in the postseason after laying an egg in Game 1 against the Brewers. That’s the definition of mediocre and wholly unbecoming a transcendent player.

The Dodgers showed resilience Friday despite Kershaw’s ho-hum effort and made it a game to the bitter end. They might come back against the Brewers regardless of Kershaw’s contributions, though defeating the defending champion Houston Astros or potent Boston Red Sox in the World Series will be a taller task.

Jae C. Hong/Associated Press

Los Angeles hasn’t hoisted a Commissioner’s Trophy since 1988. Kershaw has done incredible things in Dodger blue, but he hasn’t carried his club across the finish line.

Listen to what he told reporters after the Dodgers’ Game 7 loss to the Astros in the 2017 Fall Classic: “Maybe one of these days, I won’t fail, we won’t fail and we’ll win one of these things. There’s only one team that can succeed. There’s only one team that wins the last game, so that’s tough.”

Setting aside the defeatist language, he’s right. It is tough.

So were the four errors the Dodgers committed in their Game 1 loss. There was blame to go around, as Mike Petriello of MLB.com noted:

Mike Petriello @mike_petriello

Feels like the loud part here is going to be “Kershaw loses a postseason game” and the quiet part will be “… and the Dodgers forgot how to play defense, entirely.”

A big blame scoop must be heaped on Kershaw’s plate, however. He was asked to summon greatness, and he responded with a less-than-replacement-level effort.

His average fastball velocity dipped to 91.4 mph this year from a career average of 93.8 mph. He’s wrestled with back and arm injuries and will turn 31 in March. If you’re searching for red flags, you can find them.

On the other hand, he’s carved up enough big leaguers to deserve a seat at the all-time greatness table. Recall, he twirled eight shutout innings in a division-series win Oct. 5 against the Atlanta Braves

On the other, other hand, after another playoff face-plant, he remains a pumpkin.

Is that a cheap shot? Sure.

Is it also accurate until further notice? Yes.

Israel orders immediate halt of fuel deliveries to Gaza

Israel‘s Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman has ordered an immediate halt to fuel deliveries headed to the besieged Gaza Strip in response to what he said were attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians, his office announced on Friday.

The announcement on Friday follows the killing of six Palestinians by Israeli forces during the ongoing March of Return protests.

“Israel will not tolerate a situation in which fuel tankers are allowed to enter Gaza on the one hand, while terror and violence are used against [Israeli] soldiers and Israeli citizens on the other,” the statement from Lieberman’s office read.

Qatari-bought fuel began arriving on Tuesday in a bid to alleviate the humanitarian situation in the besieged enclave and prevent any escalation in Israeli-Palestinian violence.

“The Qatari fuel to the Gaza strip’s power plant today is aimed at partially improving electricity [supply] in Gaza,” Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said at the time.

The fuel deliveries were aimed at easing months of protests along the separation fence east of Gaza, which has been under a crippling Israeli and Egyptian blockade for more than a decade.

Last week, Lieberman’s office announced a further reduction to the Gaza’s fishing zone, from nine nautical miles to six.

Lieberman said the measure was in response to “riots” along the fence dividing Israel and Gaza and a midweek beach protest in which fishing boats and demonstrators gathered at the northwest end of the Gaza Strip.

‘Humanitarian disaster’

The United Nations has warned that Israel’s 11-year blockade of the strip has resulted in a “catastrophic” humanitarian situation.

Under the UN-brokered deal, Qatar pays for the fuel which is then delivered through Israel with UN monitoring, a diplomatic source said.

A Qatari official, speaking to Reuters news agency on Sunday, said Doha planned to help with Gaza’s power crisis “at the request of donor states in the UN, to prevent an escalation of the existing humanitarian disaster”.

Israel’s energy minister, Yuval Steinitz, told Reuters on Monday that Qatar “was trying to help” prevent a Gaza flare-up.

Hamas seized control of Gaza from Abbas’s Palestinian Authority (PA) in a 2007 civil war, a year after it unexpectedly won elections in the coastal enclave, triggering a crisis in Palestinian politics.

Multiple reconciliation attempts aimed at restoring the PA to power in Gaza have failed.

Hamas spokesman Qassem said that the deliveries were facilitated “through the United Nations because of the vacuum left by the PA”.

Abbas says that making deals with Hamas amounts to recognising their control over Gaza in place of the PA.

Israel says its blockade of Gaza is necessary to isolate Hamas, with which it has fought three wars since 2008.

Lorenzo Cain, Brewers Rough Up Clayton Kershaw, Take 1-0 NLCS Lead over Dodgers

MILWAUKEE, WI - OCTOBER 12: Lorenzo Cain #6 of the Milwaukee Brewers reacts after hitting a double against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the sixth inning in Game One of the National League Championship Series at Miller Park on October 12, 2018 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images)

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on Friday night at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw had a night to forget. He exited the game in the fourth inning after allowing four earned runs on six hits.

Lorenzo Cain set the tone for the Brewers offense at the top of the order, going 3-for-5 with one run scored.

Brewers’ Bullpen Approach Works in Game 1 But Remains Risky over Seven-Game Series

Brewers manager Craig Counsell has taken the “bullpenning” approach to the extreme. Jhoulys Chacin was the only Milwaukee starter to pitch five innings in the National League Division Series against the Colorado Rockies. Counsell yanked Game 1 starter Gio Gonzalez after just two innings Friday night.

Counsell then brought on left-hander Josh Hader in the fifth inning, well before anybody would’ve expected the All-Star reliever to enter the game.

Tom @Haudricourt

Josh Hader on to pitch fifth. Counsell giving Dodgers lots to think about. Lefty Gonzalez. Righty Woodruff. Now lefty Hader. Lots of different looks.

Game 1 represented an almost ideal situation for Counsell to deploy his strategy. A Manny Machado solo home run gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Brewers plated two runs in the third.

By taking an early lead, Milwaukee allowed Counsell more flexibility with the bullpen.

JJ Cooper @jjcoop36

Said on our preview podcast that if the Brewers were even after five they were leavin. Three run lead with Hader, Jeffess and Knebel rested is pretty much ideal scenario.

Still, the jury is out as to whether relying so heavily on the relievers is sustainable over a seven-game playoff series. In addition to tiring out pitchers who aren’t used to such heavy workloads, the Brewers could jeopardize one of the benefits to using late-inning specialists.

Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN

Interesting that the Dodgers’ staff thinks that getting into the Milwaukee bullpen early will become an advantage over a seven-game series, because of tiring relievers. Some Astros’ staffers believe that’s how they won the World Series vs. LAD–an LAD staff worn down over 7 games

And by being so aggressive with Hader—using him for three innings—Counsell basically ruled him out for Game 2. In a high-leverage situation Saturday, Counsell might rue the fact that he has to either rest Hader or put him on the mound when he’ll almost certainly be fatigued.

Kershaw’s Poor Start Emblematic of Star’s Gradual Decline

Entering Friday, Kershaw had a 4.08 ERA in 25 playoff appearances, so his Game 1 performance strengthens the narrative—fair or not—that he’s unable to rise to the occasion in October.

That viewpoint may not tell the full story this time around.

Eno Sarris @enosarris

I feel like early poor showings for Kershaw in postseason were just random and now his stuff is not as good and he’ll just get creamed by the narrative between those two facts

Although Kershaw’s defense did him no favors, he wasn’t sharp to open the NLCS.

Andrew Simon @AndrewSimonMLB

All six hits Clayton Kershaw allowed were right over the heart of the plate.

(The ones on the edges are a sac fly and the catcher’s interference). https://t.co/ZqOwlCSp8P

Kershaw turns 31 in March, which isn’t that old. However, he already has 11 years of MLB service and has logged 2,229.1 innings between the regular season and playoffs. Then you throw in the persistent injury issues that have dogged him for three straight years, and his future isn’t so straightforward.

Kershaw finished with a 3.19 FIP and averaged 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings this past season, both of which were his worst marks since his rookie year in 2008, per Baseball Reference.

The seven-time All-Star delivered a gem in the NLDS, shutting out the Atlanta Braves and limiting them to two hits in eight innings. On his best day, Kershaw remains one of the game’s top pitchers.

But fans might be witnessing the beginning of the end of Kershaw’s time as MLB’s pre-eminent ace, and it might be time to reset what we expect of him in the playoffs.

Catcher Position Might Be Big Problem for Dodgers

Yasmani Grandal tied for third in WAR (3.6) among Dodgers position players in 2018, per FanGraphs, and his defense accounted for a good chunk of his overall value. According to Baseball Prospectus, Grandal was the best catcher in adjusted field runs above average.

That great defender was nowhere to be seen early in Game 1.

Grandal allowed two passed balls in the first three innings, and he helped set up Milwaukee’s second run of the night.

With one out in the third, Jesus Aguilar lined out to David Freese at first base. The home plate umpire allowed Aguilar to take first, though, after ruling Grandal interfered with his swing. Instead of Kershaw having two outs and runners on second and third, the bases were loaded with just one out.

Hernan Perez stepped to the plate next and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give Milwaukee the lead.

Norman Chad @NormanChad

Yasmani Grandal’s third inning: passed ball, catcher’s interference, error.
Is that a hat trick or fielding for the cycle?

Ben Maller @benmaller

Yasmani Grandal became first catcher in MLB postseason history with 2 passes balls and 2 errors in same game. More impressive, he accomplished both in first three innings. #Dodgers

The issue for the Dodgers is they don’t have a good alternative to playing Grandal. Austin Barnes, who does have some October experience, would be the option.

Matthew Pouliot @matthewpouliot

Easily forgotten now, but Austin Barnes started 13 postseason games, including the final eight, over Grandal last year.

But Barnes was a .205 hitter and slugged .290 during the regular season, compared to .289 and .486, respectively, a year ago. The Dodgers can’t afford to start a hitter with such a low ceiling, even with a lineup as balanced as theirs.

While Grandal won’t single-handedly lose the Dodgers the NLCS, he does appear to be a liability.

What’s Next?

The series stays in Milwaukee for Game 2. First pitch is scheduled for 4:09 p.m. ET on Saturday, with television coverage on Fox.

The rise of renewable energy will change everything (Promoted by AT&T)

An electric vehicle cruising down the highway, a solar panel installed on a neighbor’s rooftop, a wind turbine turning in the breeze: These are just a few of the powerful symbols that represent the blossoming renewable energy economy.

There’s little doubt that the world is on the cusp of a new era of energy generation and consumption. From the rise of renewable fuel sources to the increasing number of companies like AT&T that are investing in clean energy, renewables are swiftly becoming a booming industry.

As a result, we’re in the midst of an explosion of opportunity — both economic and environmental. In America, the seismic shift toward renewables is evident in both classrooms and boardrooms, particularly as major international corporations invest heavily in clean energy. Earlier in 2018, for instance, AT&T announced the expansion of its renewable energy program in collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources.

Not only does corporate investment in renewable energy help create a cleaner and more livable planet, it also helps create jobs and boost careers. Below, we explore how the renewable energy boom is being bolstered by companies like AT&T — and why it matters for future generations.

Renewables are a booming industry

The primary barrier to entry for adopting renewable energy has traditionally been cost. But recent data suggests that renewable energy is more cost-efficient than ever, and studies show that renewable energy will be consistently cheaper than fossil fuels as soon as 2020.

Matthew Linthicum, a wind turbine technician working near the site of a future AT&T-backed wind farm, has witnessed the renewable energy spike firsthand over the course of five years working as a wind tech.

“The cost to produce [wind] power is starting to get right on that level with natural gas,” he says. “And that’s made me feel really good about working in the wind industry.”

“[The story here] is about so much more than just beating records, though,” said John Di Donato, vice president of development for NextEra Energy Resources. “It’s a demonstration of how renewable energy is sustainable, reliable, and cost competitive. It’s why in 2017, renewables made up 55% of new capacity installed onto the US grid. That’s important — especially considering it was the fourth consecutive year that renewables accounted for more than half of new generation.”

The low-carbon economy and corporate leadership

Corporations are front and center in America’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Dozens of Fortune 500 companies are committing to purchase millions of megawatt hours of energy from new wind and solar projects, which enable companies like NextEra Energy Resources to invest billions in capital to the grid. In the first half of 2018 alone, corporations announced deals for 2.48 gigawatts of wind and solar – adding to the 2.89 gigawatts purchased by companies last year – and that number has since increased to 3.86 gigawatts (as of Sept. 20). These investments are becoming a major driver for the growth of the renewable sector overall.

AT&T is one of the largest corporate purchasers of renewable energy, and the company is making significant commitments to environmental sustainability. High among these commitments is the company’s 10X Carbon Reduction goal, which aims to enable carbon savings that are ten times the footprint of the company’s operations by 2025.

“Our culture lends itself to trying to create the kind of environment where our customers live and our employees work that is sustainable and clean,” says Joe Taylor, vice president of global tech optimization and implementation for AT&T. “We think companies can play a key role in taking care of our planet as we move forward.”

Taylor says that AT&T’s dedication to its 10X Carbon Reduction goal is just one stepping-stone toward a brighter future. “We recognize that climate change is happening, and we’re really working to create a better, more sustainable world. Moving off of coal and even gas-based power plants into [renewable energy sources] is going to help modernize our economy, and we’re really proud to be a part of it.”

Taylor also notes that AT&T is investing in renewable energy because it’s both good for the environment and makes sense from a business perspective. “AT&T is one of the largest providers of data traffic and mobile and wire lines, so it’s really important for us to have good, sustainable access to energy,” he explains.

A feel-good career that’s good for the planet

Younger generations stand to benefit from the renewable energy boom on several fronts. For one, the job market in this arena is growing exponentially — particularly in rural areas of the country where job growth has been stagnating for years. And, as generations just hitting the workforce are seeking purpose — not just prosperity — the renewable energy market presents an opportunity to make a decent living and do good simultaneously.

Lindsay Wallace is a project manager for renewable development and origination at NextEra Energy Resources. Throughout Wallace’s seven-year stint at the company, she’s seen the renewables industry skyrocket. In her current role, working closely on corporate partnership agreements between NextEra Energy Resources and external organizations, she’s also seen the positive, on-the-ground impacts that wind energy projects can have.

These projects hit close to home for Wallace on more than one level. “I grew up in a household that was incredibly mindful of sustainability, turning off the lights, saving water … even to the extent that if you didn’t get out of the shower fast enough, the cold water might be switched on,” she recalls. “Growing up like that made me conscious about my personal impact and enthusiastic for what I could do for the world in my career.”

Wallace, who directly supports AT&T-backed projects, explains that collaboration with AT&T was serendipitous for both parties. “We had a number of projects that were a really strong fit for AT&T, both by the value they delivered as well as the community benefits and the locations [where they were planned],” she says. For example, AT&T, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, jumped at the chance to support renewable energy projects in the company’s “home” state.

Today, the four wind energy projects that AT&T is backing are expected to have a notable impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions — the equivalent of taking 530,000 cars per year off of the road.

While projects like the ones supported by AT&T can have big environmental benefits, they also take time. Taylor says that the company worked for nearly a year to find the right projects and right partners.

“We worked hard to get this right,” says Taylor. “It took a lot of people and a lot of time to make sure our investments would benefit both our company and our planet. Now, the renewable projects we’re building together can help change the world.”

This article is the second in a series from AT&T exploring how wind energy is powering America’s transition to a low-carbon economy and creating a better, more environmentally sustainable world. AT&T is working to enable a clean energy future; the company is one of the largest corporate purchasers of renewable energy in the US. Read the first piece in the series here.

‘I’m the other Joe’: Biden stumps for Donnelly to energize Dem base in Indiana

Joe Biden and Joe Donnelly

Elections

In red-state Senate races, Democrats work a high-wire balance between energizing their base and winning over Republican voters.

HAMMOND, Ind. –– With early voting underway in his battleground reelection campaign, Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) turned to red-state Democrats’ best national surrogate to gin up enthusiasm among his base: former Vice President Joe Biden.

Biden peppered his speech here Friday night with red-meat applause lines for the hundreds of enthusiastic Democrats in the crowd: he talked of protecting health care and coverage for pre-existing conditions, gave shout-outs to union and middle-class households and criticized the current administration, saying that “basic American values are under assault” and President Donald Trump is “cratering” America’s reputation abroad.

Story Continued Below

Biden praised Donnelly as a man of character, and joked that he told him at the start of the campaign he would come to Indiana to rally for or against him, whichever was more helpful — a nod to Donnelly’s tough path to reelection as a moderate Democrat in a red state.

His speech also included a very specific call to arms: Biden gave the crowd the address of the county courthouse and a website to check their polling locations, and implored them to vote early.

“We win back the Senate, you’re going to see about seven U.S. Senators flip overnight,” Biden said to cheers from the crowd. “Not to be Democrats, but to vote their conscience.”

The event, which took place in a gym at the local civic center a few miles from the Illinois border, also featured a surprise guest: NBA player Victor Oladipo, an Indiana University basketball alumnus who currently plays for the Indianapolis Pacers, who endorsed Donnelly.

The rally underscores the high-wire balancing act for red-state Democrats: finding ways to tap into the sky-high enthusiasm among their Democratic base while avoiding any damage to their carefully crafted moderate brands. Democrats are fighting in a handful of toss-up states as they aim to chip away at Republicans’ 51-49 majority in the Senate.

Biden’s visit was a split screen with Vice President Mike Pence, the former governor of Indiana, who was in Indianapolis on Friday to headline the state party’s annual dinner and will be rallying with Republican Senate hopeful Mike Braun on Saturday.

“I have a message for my fellow Hoosiers: on behalf of myself, the president and conservatives everywhere, it’s time to vote no on Joe Donnelly,” Pence said.

Republicans have worked hard to exploit Democrats’ balancing act. Earlier this week, former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, who is running for Senate in the state, received backlash from some campaign volunteers for supporting Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court after facing heavy pressure from Republicans on the issue. In Missouri, Republican Josh Hawley’s Senate campaign released a TV ad showing a clip of Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) saying she could afford to lose some votes in the state’s rural Bootheel if turnout was high around St. Louis. (In the full clip, McCaskill says she’s working hard to earn votes everywhere.)

Donnelly rarely brings in national figures to campaign in Indiana. But John Anzalone, a top Democratic pollster, said Biden is the unique national Democrat who doesn’t risk turning off voters even in red states.

“In places like the Midwest, he’s popular, he’s without a doubt kind of the voice of the middle class and the working class,” Anzalone said. “So is Joe Donnelly. It’s lunchpail Joe.”

Republicans, however, view Biden’s visit as a sign of concern for Democrats: if Donnelly needs to rally enthusiasm in the state’s Democratic territory, they argue, it means he’s struggling to hang on to the Republican crossover support he needs to win. Republicans have argued that Donnelly both cost himself moderate Republican support and energized the GOP base against him after he opposed now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

“This is the last piece of ground you want to give up,” said Cam Savage, a top Republican consultant in Indiana. “If they’re fighting over Northwest Indiana, they’ve already fought everywhere else they can fight.”

Democrats aren’t fighting over votes in Northwest Indiana so much as scrapping to make sure turnout is high. Gary and Hammond, two of the ten largest cities in the state, both sit in Lake County, right across the border from Chicago. Donnelly won nearly 7 out of every 10 votes in the county in 2012, and even ran ahead of Biden and President Barack Obama’s margin here.

“Six years ago, they said I could never win the U.S. Senate race, and I said wait ‘til you see what happens in Northwest Indiana,” Donnelly said to cheers.

“Joe Donnelly for the last six years has had to balance the fact that this is a Republican state that voted heavy for President Trump. Sen. Donnelly had to keep that in the back of his mind and keep the base happy,” said Thomas McDermott, the Democratic mayor of Hammond. “It hasn’t always been an easy ride for him.”

McDermott said Donnelly has been to the city close to 60 times during his first term as a senator, and said that hustle helps him earn votes.

Mike Jones, 65, a mechanical engineer from Muncie, said at the rally Friday that it bothers him to see Donnelly work closely with Trump and Republicans as often as he does. But he understands the situation Donnelly is in, and said he still plans to cast a vote for him.

“I wish he was a lot more left of center. That would better represent my feeling about things, but he isn’t and he’s what we’ve got,” Jones said. “When it comes down to the super important things, he’s going to represent the Democrats well enough.”

Kim Ferraro, 62, from Crown Point, showed up to the rally wearing Bernie Sanders and Planned Parenthood buttons pinned to a Michelle Obama T-shirt. She said she probably wouldn’t have come to the rally if not for Biden, but said she planned to vote for Donnelly.

“He votes with the Ds when he needs to and I think that he’s a good fit for Indiana,” Ferraro said. “I’m wearing a Bernie Sanders pin so I’m way left of him, but I am satisfied with the job he’s doing. I am thrilled with the fact that he voted ‘no’ on Kavanaugh. I’m in his camp.”

Davis made the statement during an interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols:

Anthony Davis says he’s the best player in the NBA – and yes, I asked him if he’s heard of LeBron & Kevin Durant. But AD points out he’s the only one if that group who was a finalist for both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year last season. https://t.co/gc2njPliyQ

The 25-year-old University of Kentucky product finished third in Most Valuable Player voting last season behind LeBron and the Houston Rockets’ James Harden, the award’s winner.

Davis averaged 28.1 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals in 75 appearances for the Pelicans last season. That terrific across-the-board production allowed him to rank second to Harden in player efficiency rating, per ESPN.com.

Last month, the Chicago native caused a stir when he switched his representation to Klutch Sports, the same agency that handles James, prompting speculation that he could leave New Orleans.

“It was just for where I am right now in my career—what I’m trying to do—I thought the change was necessary,” Davis told reporters. “That’s all it was.”

He’ll head into the 2018-19 campaign second in betting odds for MVP (+450), per OddsShark. James is the favorite (+333), with the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo (+500), Harden (+650) and the Toronto Raptors’ Kawhi Leonard (+950) rounding out the top five.

Davis and the Pelicans kick off the regular season Wednesday with a road game against the Rockets at Toyota Center.

Jake Paul responds to his ex Alissa Violet appearing in Shane Dawson’s series

Jake Paul released a reaction video to Alissa Violet’s appearance in Shane Dawson’s upcoming installment in his popular docu-series all about Jake, so buckle up for … genuine self-reflection?

The controversial vlogger took a rare approach to his ex-girlfriend’s cameo. Alissa, who dated Jake from 2015 to 2016, publicly accused him of physically and emotionally abusing her. In a clip featured in The Mind of Jake Paul, Alissa says Jake dragged her down the stairs.

In his response uploaded on Friday, Jake claims that Alissa wasn’t originally going to appear in Shane’s docu-series, but he felt that it made sense to add her perspective.

“My story is bigger than just me,” he says, admitting that he was apprehensive about Shane interviewing his ex.

Acknowledging his part in “YouTube’s diss track season,” where rivaling vloggers attacked each other and got “super cliquey,” Jake admits that “we need to grow out of that freaking stage.”

“She can go on … and say whatever she wants, because that’s only fair,” he says, adding that he doesn’t want his fans to be mad.

Is this a moment of actual personal growth for Jake Paul, the kid who doxxed Post Malone?

“It’s okay to be somebody and change that,” he concludes. “If you just stay the same, then you’re never gonna evolve as a person.”

Granted, to get to this moment of reflection, viewers had to sit through a 10-minute long merch commercial, so who’s to say how much Jake has really changed?
