Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Stares Down Tom Brady, Shows Why He’s the NFL’s Future

Tom Brady isn’t ready to give up his throne just yet. But one day, and one day soon, someone else will sit on it. Some brilliant young passer will become the face of the NFL. And based on what we saw Sunday, it will probably be Patrick Mahomes.

No, Mahomes will probably never equal the statistical and historic greatness of Brady. Or the overall greatness of Aaron Rodgers. It’s possible no quarterback ever will.

But what Mahomes showed in one of the great, entertaining, awe-inspiring shootouts of the year is that he will someday be considered by all the best quarterback—and most important player—in football. When Brady retires and Rodgers is governor of California, Mahomes will carry on their tradition of greatness at the quarterback position.

Mahomes wasn’t perfect Sunday, but he was damn good. And more importantly, he stared down the most formidable duo in football history in Brady and Bill Belichick, and he didn’t flinch.

The Patriots won 43-40, but maybe the biggest winner of the night was Mahomes, who made clear to anyone who watched that he’s the future of the position.

Mahomes was at times confused by Belichick’s schemes. He was excitable, overthrowing passes early. Belichick ran a number of different looks at Mahomes, and they got to him.

But only for so long.

You simply do not see such a young player come into the Patriots’ house and toss around the furniture and stay throw for throw with Brady. They almost always crumble under the pressure and get eaten alive.

Mahomes didn’t. As the game went on, he got better. He watched what Belichick did in the first half and adapted in the second. He used his weapons, like the stunning Tyreek Hill. He was calm. He was relentless and unwavering.

You could see what Mahomes was going up against all game. Belichick is the best defensive mind in the history of football, and against Mahomes he pulled out all of the tricks. On one of Mahomes’ interceptions, Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower crowded the line of scrimmage, like he was going to blitz, and then slipped out into one of the passing lanes. Mahomes never saw him and threw the ball right to the spot where Hightower wasn’t supposed to be.

“I just lost him,” Mahomes told reporters after the game.

NFL @NFL

On another play in the first half, five Patriots defenders stood near the line of scrimmage in two-point stances, faked like they were going to back up into coverage and then suddenly blitzed. Mahomes felt the pressure and overthrew a wide-open Travis Kelce.

There were times when Mahomes’ head looked like it was spinning. It’s understandable. He was going up against Belichick.

“I missed some throws,” Mahomes said. “That happens in this league. When you’re playing good football teams, you can’t miss those throws.”

Entering the game, quarterbacks in their first starts against the Patriots at Foxborough during the Belichick-Brady era were 5-44 in the regular season with 11 straight losses, according to the NFL. The last QB to win his first start there was Colin Kaepernick in 2012. Kaepernick was also the youngest to win there since 2001, according to ESPN Stats and Info, at 25. QBs younger than 25 were 0-23 at New England in the regular season since 2001. Mahomes is 23.

But you could almost literally see Mahomes’ pulse lower as the game went on.

We have seen Mahomes look superhuman much of the year, and we saw it again in the second half. The throws he missed were connecting. Belichick’s tricks weren’t working. Then Mahomes flashed his special, dynamic and mind-bending abilities, contorting and twisting his way to explosive plays that are reminiscent of Steve Young and Mike Vick.

Belichick was the hunter early on. The Patriots became the hunted as Mahomes calmed and decoded Belichick. He became Brady-like in every way. The skill. The fearlessness. The absolute confidence.

Brady would rely on his array of weapons, and so too would Mahomes. His strikes to Tyreek Hill were almost as entertaining as Hill going into ludicrous speed after catching them.

NFL @NFL

ARE YOU KIDDING?

📺: NBC https://t.co/Bv6fHUKw77

Mahomes finished 23-of-36 for 352 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

“You learn from everything in the league,” Mahomes said. “You learn from every single experience you have.”

One of the things I liked most about Mahomes was how he handled himself after the game. He was disappointed but levelheaded and introspective. He even cracked a joke when asked about a specific play to Hill.

“A magician never reveals his tricks,” he said, laughing. “I’ll just leave it at that.”

After the game, Brady sprinted across the field toward Mahomes and congratulated him. You could see it. Brady knew. He knew.

He knew he just saw the future.

Malaysia’s Mahathir: Uighurs freed because they did nothing wrong

Mahathir has shown a willingness to stand up to Beijing since re-taking power [Hwee Young via AP]

Malaysia freed 11 ethnic Uighur Muslims who fled to the Southeast Asian nation after a Thai jailbreak because they did nothing wrong, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Monday.

China – which had asked for their extradition – said last week it “resolutely” opposed Malaysia’s decision to release the 11 Uighurs and send them to Turkey.

“They have done nothing wrong in this country, so they are released,” Mahathir said in brief comments to reporters in parliament, the first from the Malaysian government since their release.

Malaysia’s move was likely to strain ties with China, which have already been tested since Mahathir won a stunning election victory in May and cancelled more than $20bn worth of projects awarded to Chinese companies.

Prosecutors in Muslim-majority Malaysia dropped charges against the Uighurs on humanitarian grounds, their lawyer said.

The men were detained and charged with illegally entering Malaysia after the prison break in November 2017, during which they punched holes in a prison wall and used blankets as ladders.

Some Western missions sought to dissuade Malaysia from sending the Uighurs to China, which has been accused of persecuting the Muslim minority.

Tight controls

Beijing accuses “separatist extremists” among the Uighur minority of plotting attacks on China’s Han majority in the restive far western region of Xinjiang and elsewhere.

China has been accused of rights abuses in Xinjiang, torture of Uighur detainees, and tight controls on their religion and culture. Beijing denies wrongdoing.

The UN has said about one million Muslims in Xinjiang have been rounded up and held in so-called “re-education” centres – camps the Uighurs claim are intended to replace the next generation’s Uighur identity with a Chinese one.

Over the years, hundreds, possibly thousands, of Uighurs have escaped the unrest by travelling clandestinely via Southeast Asia to Turkey.

Pope Francis reportedly coming to North Korea in coming months

Pope Francis wants to visit North Korea in the coming months, a South Korean official said on Monday, a further sign the isolated nation is opening up to the world.

The move comes after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un invited the pontiff to his country last week.

“I heard that there is talk that Pope Francis wants to visit North Korea next spring,” Lee Hae-chan, the chairman of South Korea’s Democratic Party, was quoted as saying on Monday by Yonhap news agency.

Lee didn’t clarify the source of his information. If the visit happens, it would be the first time a pope visited North Korea.

North Korea and the Vatican have no formal diplomatic relations. North Korea’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion as long as it does not undermine the state, but beyond a handful of state-controlled places of worship, no open religious activity is allowed.

Tension-reduction steps

The rival Koreas held high-level talks on Monday to discuss further engagement amid a global diplomatic push to resolve the nuclear standoff with North Korea.

South Korea said discussions were aimed at finding ways to carry out peace agreements announced after the summit last month between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

The meeting between senior officials comes at a sensitive time as the United States has expressed unease over the fast pace in inter-Korean engagement, which it says should move in tandem with US-led efforts to denuclearise the North.

North Korea’s Kim agrees to ‘dismantle’ key missile test sites

Before leaving for the meeting at the border village of Panmunjom, South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said the discussions will include setting up a joint survey of a North Korean railroad section the Koreas plan to connect with the South. The North’s chief delegate to the talks is Ri Son Gwon, who chairs the North Korean agency that deals with inter-Korean affairs.

There could also be discussions over the specifics of a joint military committee agreed between their leaders to evaluate tension-reduction steps and maintain communication to prevent crises and accidental clashes.

In their third summit this year, Moon and Kim committed to revive economic cooperation when possible, voicing optimism that international sanctions could end and allow such activity, and hold a ground-breaking ceremony by the end of the year on an ambitious project to connect their roads and railways.

The North and South also announced measures to reduce conventional military threats, such as creating buffer zones along their land and sea boundaries and a no-fly zone above the border, removing 11 front-line guard posts by December, and demining sections of the Demilitarized Zone. The Koreas also said they will make a push to co-host the 2032 Summer Olympics.

Moon has described inter-Korean engagement as crucial to resolving the nuclear standoff and is eager to restart joint economic projects held back by sanctions if the larger nuclear negotiations between the United States and North Korea begin yielding results.

‘Do nothing’

Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un address massive crowd

However, South Korea’s enthusiasm for engagement with its rival appears to have created discomfort with ally United States amid growing concerns that the North is lagging behind its supposed promise to denuclearise.

Moon’s government last week walked back a proposal to lift some of its unilateral sanctions against North Korea following US President Donald Trump’s blunt retort that Seoul could “do nothing” without Washington’s approval.

South Korea’s Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha also said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had expressed displeasure about the Koreas’ military agreement. Kang was not specific but her comments fueled speculation Washington wasn’t fully on board before Seoul signed the agreement.

Despite three summits with Moon and one with Trump in June, Kim has yet to provide a convincing sign he’s ready to deal away his nuclear weapons, which he may see as his strongest guarantee of survival.

Pompeo recently visited Kim in Pyongyang in an effort to set up another summit between him and Trump following rocky exchanges in lower-level talks that saw North Korea accuse Washington of “gangster-like” demands on denuclearisation.

Trump, defiant, unloads on ’60 Minutes’

President Donald Trump

“This is the most deceptive, vicious world,” Donald Trump said of the world of Washington politics. | Olivier Douliery – Pool/Getty Images

White House

The president portrayed himself as an isolated but eminently empowered commander in chief.

President Donald Trump defied climate scientists, intelligence specialists and even his own defense secretary on Sunday evening, capping a week of freewheeling press engagements with a sprawling primetime network television interview in which he portrayed himself as an isolated but eminently empowered commander in chief.

“I felt comfortable at the beginning, other than it was a little surreal to say I’m the president of the United States, but I think that’s true with everybody,” Trump told journalist Lesley Stahl during an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday evening.

Story Continued Below

“Now I very much feel like POTUS. I do,” he said. “I feel like the president.”

But Trump also showed signs that reports from the last month — including an anonymous New York Times op-ed describing a “quiet resistance” within the Trump administration, as well as a story alleging that the deputy attorney general considered wearing a wire to record the president — have heightened his sense of loneliness and feelings of paranoia in the nation’s capital.

“I don’t trust everybody in the White House, I’ll be honest with you,” Trump said, revealing that he is “usually guarded” during meetings.

“I always used to say the toughest people are Manhattan real estate guys and blah, blah. Now I say they’re babies,” the president said, adding: “This is the most deceptive, vicious world. It is vicious, it’s full of lies, deceit and deception. You make a deal with somebody and it’s like making a deal with that table.”

Pressed by Stahl on whether he harbored any regrets from his almost two years in office, the president cited not his administration’s controversial “zero tolerance” immigration policy, his much-criticized response to the violence in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017, or the various scandals that have plagued several members of his Cabinet.

Instead, Trump lamented that “the press treats me so badly” and said he should have moved sooner to terminate the NAFTA trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.

In keeping with his condemnation of America’s long-standing allies and praise for its historic foes, the president bashed the European Union as a hostile league “formed in order to take advantage of us on trade” — declaring that “nobody treats us much worse” — and rebuked Defense Secretary James Mattis’ support for a multinational Western alliance.

“Frankly, I like General Mattis,” Trump said. “I think I know more about it than he does. And I know more about it from the standpoint of fairness, that I can tell you.”

“I’m fully in favor of NATO, but I don’t want to be taken advantage of,” he continued.

The president did little on Sunday to tamp down escalating rumors that Mattis would be the latest high-level official to exit the administration. Last week, Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, surprised much of the White House with her resignation announcement.

“I think he’s sort of a Democrat, if you want to know the truth,” Trump said of the four-star Marine general.

“He may leave,” Trump added of Mattis. “I mean, at some point, everybody leaves. Everybody. People leave. That’s Washington.”

The president also dismissed the work of researchers studying increases in global temperatures that could threaten the well-being of the planet and exacerbate natural disasters, purporting that “they have a very big political agenda” and claiming that Earth’s climate “could very well go back.”

After being read a litany of Kim Jong Un’s alleged human rights abuses, however, Trump insisted he was “not a baby,” and was aware of the various cruelties the North Korean leader carried out against his people.

Still, the president said he shared “good energy” and “good chemistry” with Kim, and characterized his frequently warm words for the despot as a means to advancing America’s national security and improving diplomatic relations with a rogue nation.

“I get along with him really well,” Trump said, adding: “Look at the horrible threats that were made. No more threats. No more threats.”

Trump brushed off purported assassinations and similarly malign behavior by President Vladimir Putin of Russia, commenting, “It’s not in our country.” And he rejected the notion that his 2016 presidential campaign coordinated with the Kremlin to interfere in the contest against Hillary Clinton.

“Do you really think I’d call Russia to help me with an election? Give me a break,” Trump said. “They wouldn’t be able to help me at all. Call Russia. It’s so ridiculous.”

Trump tells ’60 Minutes’ that climate change will ‘change back again’

In a seemingly rare instance, Donald Trump was pressed about his views on climate change on Sunday in an interview with 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl.

Although Trump stepped back from his previous claims that climate change is a hoax, he stopped short of acknowledging that it is a manmade problem, and claimed that global warming will somehow reverse.

SEE ALSO: The most damning conclusions from the UN’s special climate change report

“I think something’s happening. Something’s changing and it’ll change back again. I don’t think it’s a hoax, I think there’s probably a difference,” he told the program.

“But I don’t know that it’s manmade. I will say this. I don’t wanna give trillions and trillions of dollars. I don’t wanna lose millions and millions of jobs. I don’t wanna be put at a disadvantage.”

Stahl told Trump that she wished he “could go to Greenland” and “watch these huge chunks of ice just falling into the ocean, raising the sea levels.”

In response, Trump told Stahl, “You don’t know whether or not that would have happened with or without man.”

Trump’s resistance to acknowledge human-induced climate change is at odds with findings made by his own scientists at NASA and NOAA, but the president told the program he has “scientists that disagree with that.”

He also accused scientists of having a “political agenda,” but didn’t elaborate on either of the claims.

The current administration has been hostile to climate policy, as evidenced by the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement last year, and Trump’s confusion as to who the I.P.C.C. is when it released its grim report last week.

Trump’s interview with the program also touched on the Brett Kavanaugh saga. The president said a speech in which he mocked her testimony helped the Supreme Court nominee get across the line, but Trump denied he was making fun of her.

“Had I not made that speech, we would not have won. I was just saying she didn’t seem to know anything,” he said. Instead, Trump thought Blasey Ford was “treated with great respect,” but didn’t answer if he thought she was lying about her accusation of sexual assault against Kavanaugh.

“I’m not gonna get into it because we won. It doesn’t matter. We won,” he said.

Sen. David Perdue snatched a student’s phone and people are pissed

2017%2f09%2f01%2fdc%2f1bw.3febfBy Shannon Connellan

Senator David Perdue snatched a Georgia Tech student’s phone from their hands on Saturday, and people are pretty outraged.

When visiting the Atlanta campus to attend a campaign event for Republican gubernatorial nominee Brian Kemp, Perdue was questioned by a GT member of Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) about voter suppression in Georgia.

SEE ALSO: Melania Trump believes she’s the most bullied person in the world. Hmm.

Kemp has recently become the subject of scrutiny, after an Associated Press report indicated that 53,000 voter registrations are sitting in limbo within Kemp’s office — most of these belong to black voters and other minorities.

Democratic opponent Stacey Adams accused Kemp of using voter suppression as an intimidation and fear-mongering tactic that “is as much about terrifying people about trying to vote as it is about actually blocking their ability to do so.”

So, Perdue, when questioned about Kemp’s actions on Saturday, decided the best (and most mature) course of action wasn’t to have a conversation, but to grab the questioner’s phone from their hands.

YDSA posted a video of the moment to Twitter, which was captured on the phone. Just before snatching the phone, Perdue says “No, I’m not doing that,” in response to the student’s questions.

Then, with the student’s phone in his hand, Perdue says, “You wanted a picture. I’m going to give it to you.”

“Give me my phone back, Senator,” the student asks multiple times.

YSDA described the incident as “shocking, appalling, and totally unbecoming of the supposedly hallowed office of US Senator.” The group told Mashable the student was considering filing a campus police report.

“Perdue walked into Georgia Tech’s backyard, and students aren’t allowed to ask him a simple question? It would be one thing to say ‘no comment’ or inform us he’s not taking questions. Perdue would have been within his legal rights to simply walk away or decline the question. But instead, he forcibly, suddenly, and violently took their phone without justification or provocation,” YDSA said in a statement.

Perdue’s action royally pissed off people on Twitter, some who pointed out the potential repercussions if the situation had been reversed.

“Had the situation today been the other way around, and if the Georgia Tech student had snatched a sitting US Senator’s phone, the student would likely have been arrested on the spot,” YDSA said in their statement.

There were calls for the student to press charges against the Senator for theft, even though Perdue eventually returned the phone.

If someone had snatched the senators phone they would have found themselves on the ground with a knee on their back, followed by a quick trip to jail. Why is @sendavidperdue allowed to get away with this @FBI?

— Kymmi B (@BaumanKym) October 14, 2018

Isn’t that theft and possible assault?

— Angelina Thompson (@eangelina64) October 14, 2018

— Traci Garceau (@TraciLGarceau) October 14, 2018

Others were simply disappointed in the Senator’s actions.

A sitting US Senator did this? Not a state senator or county party chair, a sitting US Senator!

— Clinton Pope (@clintonpope) October 14, 2018

disgusting and sad. This man is not entitled to act like this. He works for the people, not the other way around.

Perdue is yet to issue a public response.

Deadline passes for Syria’s Idlib buffer without fighters leaving

A deadline passed on Monday without fighters leaving a planned buffer zone around Syria’s last major rebel bastion of Idlib as set out under a Russian-Turkish deal.

The armed groups were supposed to withdraw from the buffer as a final condition to implementing a Russian-Turkish agreement to stave off a Syrian government offensive on the northwestern region of Idlib.

The accord hung in the balance early Monday, seven years into a grinding civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions.

Just hours before the deadline expired, rebels vowed to continue to fight.

“We have not abandoned our choice of jihad and fighting towards implementing our blessed revolution,” said Hayet Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an alliance led by al-Qaeda’s former Syrian affiliate.

“We appreciate the efforts of all those who strive inside and abroad to protect the liberated area,” it said in an apparent reference to Turkey.

“But at the same time, we warn of the deceitfulness of the Russian occupier,” it said of President Bashar al-Assad’s ally.

Under the deal, heavy weapons were to have been withdrawn from the horseshoe-shaped buffer by October 10 and fighters to have left by Monday.

Demilitarised zone in Syria’s Idlib province forming after deal

Looking for a fight?

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it had not observed any fighters leaving the outlined demilitarised area by the time midnight struck.

“The jihadists not withdrawing gives the regime and Russia an excuse to carry out a military operation at least within the demilitarised zone,” Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

HTS likely “tried to gain time by neither explicitly refusing nor accepting the deal” between Russia and Turkey, he said.

Late Saturday, “heavy mortar shells” were fired from the planned buffer area into regime territory, killing two soldiers, the Syrian Observatory said.

Rebels reportedly fulfilled the first part of the deal, with Turkish officials, armed factions, and the Observatory reporting the area was free of heavy-duty weaponry.

But the mortar fire that hit an army position in Hama province appears to have violated the accord.

It was unclear which groups fired the mortars late Saturday as both the Turkish-backed National Liberation Front and rival factions were present in the area. The NLF holds about half of the Idlib region and has welcomed the accord.

‘Vast ramifications’

The lion’s share of Idlib is held by Hayet Tahrir al-Sham, as well as more hard-line fighters such as Hurras al-Deen and Ansar al-Islam.

Syria rebels begin moving heavy arms from Idlib buffer zone

Those groups also control more than two-thirds of the planned buffer zone and were supposed to withdraw by Monday.

Hurras al-Deen has publicly rejected the agreement, although it apparently withdrew its heavy arms from the area last week.

HTS, widely considered the most powerful force in Idlib, had quietly abided by the deal’s first deadline and re-stationed heavy arms elsewhere.

But getting the group to agree to the second part of the deal has proven more difficult.

In a recent report for the Turkey-based Omran Center, analyst Nawar Oliver described HTS’s approval as the deal’s ultimate “test”.

“If HTS acts as a spoiler to the agreement on the ground, this will probably lead to one of two scenarios: either Turkey and the NLF launch military action against HTS, or Russia will seize the opportunity with the support of the regime and its allies to enter Idlib,” Oliver said.

“The ramifications of that move could be vast,” he added.

Humanitarian disaster

Assad and other top government officials have warned the Idlib deal was only a “temporary” measure.

On Friday, residents around Idlib received warning messages on their mobile phones from the Syrian army. “Get away from the fighters. Their fate is sealed and near,” one said.

The agreement signed on September 17 averted a large-scale offensive, which the United Nations has said could cause massive displacement and bloodshed.

The UN warned that such action would provoke a humanitarian disaster in the region, where as many as 800,000 people – half of whom are internally displaced from previous offensives – could be forced to flee again by a regime assault on Idlib and surrounding areas.

Nearly three million people live in the zone now, hundreds of thousands of them already displaced by the brutal seven-year war and others heavily dependent on humanitarian aid to survive.

The new ‘Doctor Who’ title sequence is a real trip

For the eleventh series of Doctor Who, the beloved sci-fi show’s title sequence has taken a trippier turn.

The latest season features Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, and she’s landed with a shiny new theme and a kaleidoscopic title sequence — albeit missing the TARDIS whizzing around — which debuted on second episode “The Ghost Monument.”

The sequence is the work of a visual effects artist only known as John Smith, who made his own opening back in 2010 as a 16-year-old fan and posted it to YouTube.

“I had no idea what I was doing, but was so excited for Matt Smith’s first series that I decided to try what every Whovian-turned-VFX-Artist does at some point… making my own title sequence for the show,” Smith wrote in a Facebook post.

Eight years later, Smith was tapped to create a real sequence for the latest series.

“I still can’t believe this has actually happened, or understand why anyone would be crazy enough to trust me with something so important and iconic,” he added.
