JuJu Smith-Schuster: Fans Threatened Me, I Didn’t Spit on Vontaze Burfict

JuJu Smith-Schuster said Cincinnati Bengals fans threatened him during the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 28-21 victory Sunday.

“Major threats. They were all making threats at me. Dropping f-bombs. Burfict was out there lying, saying I spit on him which I didn’t,” Smith-Schuster told reporters.

Smith-Schuster was the subject of Bengals fans’ ire after a hard block on Vontaze Burfict last season. The then-rookie stood over Burfict to taunt him following the block.

Burfict did not retaliate against Smith-Schuster during the game, but the linebacker did have a controversial hit against Antonio Brown. The NFL will likely look at a play in which Burfict threw his shoulder and elbow into Brown’s head as he was being dragged to the ground by two Bengals defenders.

No flag was thrown on the play.

“Just you know, a nasty hit. I was able to come back in the game and finish the game,” Brown told reporters. “Any time you come in here, they call in The Jungle, you know, there’s going to be some hard hitting and some things that are going to be challenging for us and the calls. I was grateful to get up and come back in.”

Burfict did not address reporters after the game aside from telling them to “get [their] ass out of our locker room” after asking corner Dre Kirkpatrick about the hit.

India: Akbar sues journalist Priya Ramani over #MeToo allegations

India’s junior foreign minister MJ Akbar has filed a defamation suit against journalist Priya Ramani, one of at least 10 women who have accused the former editor of sexual harrasment.

The lawsuit filed on Monday names Ramani as the sole accused and says that she “intentionally put forward malicious, fabricated and salacious,” allegations to harm his reputation, according to Reuters news agency.

The lawsuit comes amid widespread calls on social media for Akbar’s resignation from his post as the minister of state for external affairs.

More than 200 protesters from the youth wing of the opposition Congress party waved placards and chanted slogans outside Akbar’s Delhi home on Monday. Some jumped barricades and clashed with police and dozens were detained, a Reuters witness said.

Ramani was not immediately reachable for comment.

Shutapa Paul, who also accused Akbar of harassing her, said if the minister “has any moral responsibility he should step down”.

“I am mulling all options. Truth and justice shall prevail,” Paul told Al Jazeera.

Akbar, 67, a veteran editor who founded several publications, has been accused of a range of inappropriate behaviour by female journalists who previously worked as his subordinates.

Many journalists have called for Akbar to be sacked and have threatened to boycott events he is attending until he resigns.

The government pf Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remained silent on the issue for days, while Akbar was attending a conference in Nigeria.

He returned to New Delhi on Sunday morning to find a crowd of reporters waiting outside his residence.

“This doesn’t impose any confidence in the government’s seriousness in addressing a very grave issue,” Geeta Seshu, member of the Network of Women and Media told Al Jazeera.

“On the one hand, this government professes a commitment to womens’ rights and to the girl child. And on the other, it allows a minister against whom such shocking allegations have been made to continue in office and represent it in international fora,” she added.

Akbar said he plans to fight the allegations and questioned if they were politically motivated.

“Akbar, being a minister, the misuse of his powers in the pursuit of any legal action he contemplates is highly possible,” Seshu said.

“In the interests of an independent investigation and to ensure real justice for the courageous women who have come out to speak up, he should be told to step down till his name is cleared.”

#MeToo in India

Akbar is one of the highest-profile figures so far to face accusations in India’s burgeoning #MeToo movement.

The movement, which began in the United States to amplify accusations of sexual harassment and abuse by powerful men in media and entertainment over a year ago, has picked up pace in India in the past few weeks after a Bollywood actress accused a colleague of inappropriate behaviour on the set of a film they were shooting in 2008.

Since then, over a dozen men from media, entertainment and the art world have been accused of offences ranging from sexual harassment to rape. Several media organisations have sacked or sent employees on leave in recent days after a string of similar allegations.

In the latest allegation to surface against Akbar, Majlie de Puy Kamp, a New York-based journalist, said Akbar molested her when she was an 18-year-old intern at his newspaper Asian Age in New Delhi in 2007.

“What he did was disgusting, he violated my boundaries, betrayed my trust,” de Puy Kamp told the news website Huffington Post India.

My story seems to be a tiny drop in a disgusting ocean — I can only hope sharing them will finally make a difference. #MeToo Thank you @Amannama & @betwasharma https://t.co/dCNYRR4vgM

— Majlie de Puy Kamp (@MajliedePuyKamp) October 12, 2018

Kavita Krishnan, an activist at the All India Progressive Women’s Association said this is also a failure of the Modi government.

“MJ Akbar’s refusal to resign and his move to intimidate his victims with defamation cases is a slap on the face of all women – not by Akbar alone but by the Modi government too. This is Modi’s version of Trump’s Kavanaugh move,” activist Krishnan said.

But these are not the only accusations, complaints have appeared all over social media from men and women alike.

— Rahul Kanwal (@rahulkanwal) October 14, 2018

First allegation against MJ Akbar surfaced on 8th October. Since then, there are innumerable accounts of his predatory behaviour. It is 13th October today. He’s still a Minister. Still representing India. #BetiBachao

Friends are asking me whether I’ve any personal vendetta against Akbar. None. I am horrified by what Ive read now and heard in the past. That’s all. https://t.co/cofcKEX3pn

— Ravi Shankar (@etteth) October 14, 2018

India’s main opposition Congress party has demanded Akbar’s resignation, while Maneka Gandhi, the minister for women and child development, has called for an investigation into the allegations against Akbar.

Usain Bolt a Reported Target for Unnamed European Club, ‘2-Year Offer’ Made

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - OCTOBER 12: Usain Bolt of the Mariners celebrates scoring his first goal during the pre-season friendly match between the Central Coast Mariners and Macarthur South West United at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on October 12, 2018 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Matt King/Getty Images)

Usain Bolt is reportedly drawing interest from football teams on both sides of the equator and is said to have received an offer from an “unnamed European club,” while the Central Coast Mariners are mulling over a counter-proposal.

The Daily Telegraph in Australia reported Bolt has received a two-year contract from a team in southern Europe, which is understood to have been recently purchased by ambitious investors with UEFA Champions League goals.

Bolt has been on trial with Australian outfit Central Coast Mariners and recently scored twice in a trial game against Macarthur South West United just days before the 2018-19 A-League season gets under way.

The report read:

“The Daily Telegraph understands Bolt has been made a formal two-year offer to join a top-flight front-runner and even play in the team’s upcoming cup final.

“The club has recently been acquired by ambitious investors with aspirations of qualifying for the group stages of the European Champions League.”

Bolt has long been vocal about his dream of becoming a professional footballer after his sprint career came to an end. His goal is to one day represent Manchester United, the team he supports.

The 32-year-old has made the rounds in 2018 and spent some time training with German giants Borussia Dortmund before playing for Norwegian club Stromsgodset in a friendly against Norway’s under-19 team.

But his trial at Central Coast Mariners has been the most successful of any stint so far and resulted in a brace on his first start for the club on Friday, the first of which was a smart finish, via ESPN:

Following the game, the Australian anti-doping authority (Asada) summoned him for a drugs test.

He took to Instagram (h/t BBC Sport) on Monday to express his confusion:

“So guys I’ve retired from track and field looking to become a footballer but look at this.

“How am I going to get a drug test today? I’m not even a professional footballer yet. Seriously.

“So I asked the lady, ‘Why am I getting drug tested when I haven’t signed for a club yet?’ and she said they told her I’m an elite athlete so I have to get tested. Okay then.”

Bolt has operated mainly as a left winger in his still budding football career and certainly possesses many of the physical traits needed to be a professional—much of the questions being asked relate to his technical acumen.

Ray Gatt of The Australian wrote that Soccer Stoppage Time, a community radio programme, said Football Federation Australia was not helping the Mariners’ bid to keep Bolt due to delays in “marketing and marquee funding assistance.”

The eight-time Olympic gold medal winner has already impressed in Australia, but due to his advanced age, Bolt has to be careful about what opportunities he takes considering he’s starting his football career so late.

He spoke of his excitement to play ahead of Friday’s friendly and indicated he was pleased with the progress he had made, via Sport360:

Usain Bolt knows his first start for Central Coast Mariners could be make or break… ⚽ https://t.co/ey3oW45tv1

The European 2018-19 season is already under way, meaning Bolt would be wise to get a move on if he is to switch continents, or at least if he’s to maximise his potential impact for his new club.

The Central Coast Mariners open their A-League season away to Brisbane Roar on Sunday, but there’s a bit of mystery as to whether Bolt will still be at the club by then.

7 of the most heart-crushingly sad moments from ‘BoJack Horseman’ Season 5

Warning: Contains spoilers for BoJack Horseman Season 5.

BoJack Horseman is a funny and consistently entertaining show, but I’d be lying if I said those were the qualities I love most about it.

Nope: it’s the heart-shredding poignancy I can’t get enough of. Don’t ask me why, but ever since I watched that crushingly sad episode of Futurama with Fry’s dog Seymour, I’ve had a real soft spot for emotional cartoons.

And when it comes to animated animals tugging at your heartstrings, BoJack Horseman has some impressive form.

SEE ALSO: 11 times ‘BoJack Horseman’ gut-punched us right in the feels

Season 5 is no exception. From problematic parents to a giant floating balloon, these are some of the moments that hit me hardest…

1. The breakdown of Diane’s marriage (episode two).

The last time we saw Diane and Mr Peanutbutter in Season 4, their marriage was steadily crumbling. And any hope of a cheerful resolution is pretty much snuffed out in episode two of Season 5, which sees Diane travelling to Vietnam in an attempt to connect with her roots/run away from the knowledge that Mr Peanutbutter is seeing someone new.

“So you go to Vietnam,” says her voiceover towards the episode’s conclusion. “You think you might find community: a connection to something bigger. But, you don’t. In fact, you feel even more alone than you were before you left. But, you survive… you learn that you can survive being alone.”

The final shot of her telling Mr Peanutbutter she’s happy for him is just the type of understated sadness BoJack Horseman does so well.

2. A young Princess Carolyn leaving home (episode five).

Image: netflix/mashable composite

Difficult parental figures are a recurring theme in BoJack

Sure enough, when we’re introduced to Princess Carolyn’s mother through a sequence of flashbacks in episode five, we discover her relationship with her daughter is not a happy one.

Cutie Cutie Cupcake is a controlling and bitter alcoholic, but it’s the fact she’s not all bad — the fact that she still, in a moment of kindness, encourages her daughter to go to university — that makes her all the more tragic.

The final scene, when a determined Princess Carolyn refuses to give in when her mother changes her mind and begs her to stay, is pretty upsetting for everyone involved.

3. BoJack’s monologue about his mom (episode six).

Image: netflix/mashable composite

“Free Churro” begins with a bleak reminder of just how unhappy BoJack’s childhood was, then plunges into an even bleaker — but undeniably brilliant — present-day eulogy, which sees BoJack speaking at his mother’s funeral.

The monologue slips seamlessly between anger, bitterness, humour, and sadness — but it’s this last emotion that comes through the strongest as BoJack brings his diatribe to a close.

Image: netflix/mashable composite

4. BoJack struggling to tell Hollyhock how much she means to him (episode nine).

Image: netflix/mashable composite

Parental relationships leave permanent scars. That’s another cheery recurring theme in this show, and it’s evident in BoJack’s struggle to show affection towards his sister Hollyhock when she comes to visit him in episode nine.

He starts off the episode unable to hug her, and finishes it unable to say “I love you” when she gets back on the plane.

The shot of him half-raising his hand as she gets out of the car, as if he wants to say something but doesn’t quite know how, is perhaps the most poignant moment of all.

5. Princess Carolyn hugging her baby seat on her way back from the hospital (episode nine).

Episode nine is pretty sob-inducing all round, to be honest. While BoJack is struggling to connect with Hollyhock, Princess Carolyn is learning that the mother whose baby she was previously set to adopt has changed her mind.

Instead of travelling home with a new child, she’s left to travel home clutching the box for her new baby seat.

6. BoJack confronting himself (episode 11).

This episode, just like the penultimate one in Season 4, makes for a fairly harrowing journey through the mind. This time a drug-addicted, hallucinating BoJack is the focus, as we watch him struggle to differentiate between the show he’s acting in and his own real life.

Throughout the episode, a giant balloon left over from the “Philbert” premiere party seems to be following him around — and in the episode’s final moments, he comes face-to-face with that balloon after ascending a shining staircase.

Obviously there are a whole bunch of ways this could be interpreted, but it felt to me like BoJack was finally coming face-to-face with himself — staring unhappily at a blown-up, untethered representation of his own likeness in the same way someone might peer at their flaws in a mirror.

7. Diane taking BoJack to rehab (episode 12)

Image: netflix/mashable composite

The end of Season 5 is bittersweet. On the one hand, Diane and BoJack are both still fundamentally unhappy. But on the other hand, they seem to be taking steps towards getting better.

For Diane, it’s a case of helping BoJack despite the things she doesn’t like about him. And for BoJack, it’s finally admitting that he needs serious help in order to get sober.

Here’s hoping they’re both in a better place by the time Season 6 rolls around…

All episodes of BoJack Horseman are available on Netflix.

New Zealand BDS activists fined by Israel raise $23,000 for Gaza

Two New Zealand activists have raised thousands of dollars through crowdfunding after an Israeli court fined them for their role in singer Lorde cancelling her show in Tel Aviv, but they plan to donate the money to Gaza Mental Health Foundation instead.

Justine Sachs and Nadia Abu Shanab on Friday rejected the legal action which ordered them to pay over $12,000 in damages for causing mental harm to three Israeli teenagers who had purchased tickets to the concert.

The duo turned to a crowdfunding website raising nearly $23,000 by Monday.

The defendants wrote on Friday on fundraising website Give A Little that they had no intention of complying with the Israeli ruling.

“We will not be paying the court ordered amount. Instead, we would like to redirect the support extended to us back to Palestinians in need of mental health support,” they wrote, adding that the money would go to the Gaza Mental Health Foundation.

“Emotional distress is a lived reality for Palestinians in Gaza, where over half of children suffer PTSD as a result of Israeli military attacks,” the activists wrote.

We are inspired always by Palestinians in their pursuit of basic human dignity.

— Pav Akhtar (@pav_akhtar) October 15, 2018

Abu Shanab of Palestinian descent told NZ Radio that the pair were not prepared for the amount of international attention they would receive.

She said the pair had been “struck with a sense of responsibility”.

Israel has chosen to make an example of us,” Abu Shanab said.

The lawsuit, filed in January, is the first ruling to cite a controversial 2011 Israeli anti-boycott law that allows civil action against entities who call for a boycott of the state as part of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Palestinians in Gaza face mounting mental health crisis

Activists behind the BDS movement say it is inspired by the campaign that targeted South Africa‘s apartheid regime.

“Playing in Tel Aviv will be seen as giving support to the policies of the Israeli government, even if you make no comment on the political situation,” the activists wrote in their letter to Lorde in December.

The singer responded on Twitter, saying the concerns had been “Noted!”

Days later, the 21-year-old New Zealander cancelled the performance which was due to conclude her Melodrama world tour, saying she “didn’t make the right call” in her initial willingness to sing in Tel Aviv.

Israel sees BDS as a strategic threat and accuses it of anti-Semitism – a claim activists firmly deny, calling it an attempt to discredit them.

Artists who have participated in the cultural boycott of Israel through the Palestinian-led BDS movement include Brian Eno and Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, writers Arundhati Roy and Eduardo Galeano and film-maker Ken Loach.

MeTooEP: Addressing sexual harassment in the European Parliament

A group of European Parliament (EP) employees has launched a website to highlight sexual harassment experienced by staffers of the political body.

MeTooEP.com, referring to the global #MeToo movement, is a response to an alleged lack of action to combat sexual harassment by the parliamentary institution of the European Union.

“This website would not have been necessary if victims felt comfortable to go through the tools of the institution,” Pia Micallef, media coordinator for MeTooEP, told Al Jazeera.

“If people felt comfortable, we would have never had to create this website.”

The website comes a year after Jeanne Ponte, a parliamentary assistant, went to the media with a notebook containing testimonies of 80 EP staffers alleging abuse – both women and men – collected over five years.

It led to an immediate response from the EP, which adopted a resolution against sexual harassment detailing several steps to root it out at the highest echelons of European politics.

However, despite its rapid adoption, the measures were not implemented, say members of MeTooEP.

The group’s website has been launched to share the claims more publicly, as it calls on others working for the EP to come forward anonymously.

“Currently, when an assistant comes forward and speaks about his or her experience, they are faced with a committee that has three MEPs, a doctor and a psychologist on it,” Macillef said.

“But those last two don’t have a vote with regards to the verification of the harassment claim, while the three MEPs do.”

For any non-political EP employee that comes forward with a complaint, a similar committee is set up, but in those cases, the doctor and psychologist do have a vote on what happens next.

According to Macillef, this has created the feeling among political staff that their experiences are less important.

“The fact that there are two committees, because of certain political issues, is understandable. But the fact that the doctor and psychologist do not have a vote on that committee is not,” she said.

“It creates fear, and when you create fear that means you don’t have the proper structures in place for victims to come forward.”

“The time my colleague took candid photographs of me” read full anonymous testimonials on https://t.co/GuBRbFTUqe #MeTooEP #MeToo #TimesUP #ShareYourStory pic.twitter.com/Rzsaj5t8ym

— MeTooEP (@MeTooEP) October 10, 2018

The allegations on MeTooEP.com currently range from lewd comments made during working hours and receiving inappropriate text messages to physical harassment.

For now, only stories from Ponte’s original file of 80 stories have been posted – with the victims’ permission.

But Micallef said that during the first couple of days, a lot of people contacted the team with their own stories.

“In the coming days, our testimonials will become increasingly more difficult to read, with detailed and very grave situations in the EP, with some being so bad that we are considering to warn people within the bloc that leadership discussion might be advised,” Micallef said.

However, she wants to make clear that the website is not specifically made to publicly out those accused of harassment.

“The site allows people to come forward, but it also has tools that victims can use. Contact lists, places people can go to when they are a victim, both internal and external,” she said.

“We are not here to name and shame.”

“The time he offered to warm me up” read full anonymous testimony at https://t.co/GuBRbFTUqe #MeTooEP #MeToo #TimesUp #ShareYourStory pic.twitter.com/UY81rV3H4S

— MeTooEP (@MeTooEP) October 13, 2018

Besides resources, the site also focuses on three specific points in the resolution that have not yet been adopted by the EP: Creating a task force of independent experts to assess sexual harassment cases, making doctors and psychologists full members of the harassment committees and making sexual harassment training mandatory.

“Currently, what has been proposed is that it will be mandatory for everyone except the MEP,” Micallef said.

“That is ridiculous, because those are the people with the highest concentration of power. And at the end of the day, sexual harassment is about the abuse of power.

“When we speak to people about sexual harassment, many find that for example what might be sexual harassment to one person might not be sexual harassment to someone else

“This misconception, about what is sexual harassment and what is not, is very important to address that through training.”

At the end of the day, sexual harassment is about the abuse of power.

Pia Micallef, MeTooEP.com

But according to EP spokesperson Marjory van den Broeke, mandatory training in this manner is impossible to implement at the moment.

“As MEPs are freely elected, it is not possible to impose mandatory training, but MEPs are strongly encouraged to take such training,” Van den Broeke told Al Jazeera via email.

She also said the EP had undertaken several other steps to combat sexual harassment over the last year, citing an external audit currently being conducted.

“MEPs will also need to sign a declaration that they will respect the code of conduct on harassment if they want to have an institutional role,” she added.

“Penalties will be levied against MEPs found guilty of harassment and those will be publicly announced.”

Two ‘Bachelor: Vietnam’ contestants who fell in love on the show are now a couple

When two contestants on The Bachelor: Vietnam fell in love and wanted to run away from the show together last month, there wasn’t really a happily ever after — one contestant returned to the show.

But maybe now, they’ve found it.

SEE ALSO: Gender stereotypes are still alive and well in the online dating world, study says

In an interview with NextShark, the show’s producer Anh Tran said the contestants, Minh Thu and Truc Nhu, are now a couple.

“They left the show and have been together since. We delivered on our promise that two people would find love,” Tran told the publication.

In a clip that went viral, contestant Minh Thu was left without a rose from the show’s Bachelor, Quoc Trung.

But before leaving for good, she decided to stun everyone by professing her love to another contestant, Truc Nhu, then convincing her to leave the show.

“Come home with me,” Minh Thu told Truc Nhu. While we see them walk out in the clip, it turned out Truc Nhu returned to the show later.

Anh-Thu Nguyen, a producer for the show, who is also queer and Vietnamese-American, told the publication the moment was “awe-inspiring.”

“It’s been a proud experience to see our clip resonate around the world and become an unexpected platform for discussing LGBTQI+ issues in Vietnam on a global scale,” she said.

Vietnam abolished a ban on same-sex marriage in 2015, but the state doesn’t legally recognise unions between LGBTQ couples.
