Russian Orthodox Church splits from Constantinople over Ukraine

In the largest schism in Orthodox Christianity for over a century, the Russian Orthodox Church has cut all ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate over a “historic” decision to recognise the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as independent.

Metropolitan Hilarion, a bishop in charge of the Russian Orthodox, told journalists that the decision to break relations with the Constantinople Patriarchate was taken by The Holy Synod, the governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, in Minsk, Belarus on Monday.

In an official declaration, members of the Holy Synod wrote that allowing another church to break away “is tantamount to renouncing its historical roots and commitments” making it “impossible” for the Russian Orthodox Church to continue its union with Constantinople.

The Holy Synod has also urged other Orthodox Churches to properly evaluate a decision taken by Constantinople and to “search for ways out of the gravest crisis that is tearing apart the body of church”.

Metropolitan Hilarion said the decision was taken by The Holy Synod [Vasily Fedosenko/Reuters]

On 15 October, the Istanbul-based leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church, Ecumenical Patriarch I Bartholomew of Constantinople, took the monumental decision to recognise the full independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, after a three-day Synod.

‘Victory over evil’

Speaking at a press conference last Thursday, Ukraine‘s President Poroshenko dubbed the decision a “historic event” and a “victory of good over evil”.

A spokesman for Russian Patriarch Kirill said it “crossed a red line” and is “catastrophic” for the entire Orthodox world.

The split is seen to have a deep political significance. Poroshenko said he the decision was an issue about Ukraine’s statehood, national security and global geopolitics.

“This is the collapse of Moscow’s centuries-old claims for global domination as the Third Rome,” he said. “The independence of our church is part of our pro-European and pro-Ukrainian policies that we’ve been consistently pursuing over the last four years.”

For more than three centuries, Ukraine and Russia have been united in the Russian Orthodox Church.

When it gained independence in 1991 following the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine strove to establish religious independence and an Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate was created.

The popularity of the Kiev Patriarchate and calls for Ukraine’s independence have increased since Moscow annexed Ukrainian peninsula, Crimea in 2014.

More divisions

Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian writer and director at Internews Ukraine, said the move could create divisions in and beyond Ukraine.

“It’s possible some will support Constantinople, while some will turn to Russia. Russia will no longer recognise the Ukrainian Church and only see it as schismatic,” he said. “This could increase tensions, even though the whole idea was to end schism in Ukraine, by recognising those who are not willing to be under the Russian Church.”

READ MORE: A conflict of faith between Russia and Ukraine

In today’s Ukraine, there are three Orthodox Church branches: the Kiev Patriarchate, headed by Metropolitan Filaret, which does not recognise Moscow’s authority, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – the largest branch – previously loyal to the Moscow Patriarchate, and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, founded in 1921, in defiance of the Kremlin and forced underground during Soviet rule.

Beginning under then President Boris Yeltsin, and continuing under President Vladimir Putin, the church has seen a massive national revival in its following. It is widely seen as a pillar of the Russian state in its promotion of traditional values.

Many analysts, such as Jakub Junda, a director at the Prague-based think-tank, European Values, consider the Russian Orthodox Church a tool for spreading Russia’s influence, and “entails the promotion of Russian nationalist and imperialist ambitions”.

It is the largest branch of the Orthodox faith represents half of the world’s 200 million or Orthodox believers, including Ukrainian followers, dwarfing the 17 remaining official Orthodox Churches.

Sudden price drop shows largest ‘stablecoin,’ Tether, isn’t so stable after all

Tumbling.
Tumbling.

Image:  Malte Mueller / getty

2017%2f09%2f18%2f2b%2fjackbw5.32076By Jack Morse

I mean, it’s right there in the name.

The largest so-called stablecoin by market cap, Tether (USDT), is supposedly pegged to the U.S. dollar and always worth $1. However, if there’s one thing we know for sure about the world of cryptocurrency, it’s that things don’t always go according to plan — a fact emphasized by Tether’s sudden plunge in value over the last 24 hours.

The stablecoin briefly traded below $.87 on the exchange Bittrex before climbing back up to the still-abysmal price of $.915 at the time of this writing.

SEE ALSO: A little-known token may be fueling Bitcoin’s rise. Critics say it’s a scam.

USDT’s instability is a troubling sign not just for those HODLing that particular coin, but for potentially anyone sitting on cryptocurrency. That’s because, as demonstrated by researchers at the University of Texas this past June, Tether has likely been used to “provide price support and manipulate cryptocurrency prices.”

Not looking good.

Not looking good.

Image: screenshot / bittrex

Critics have long argued that Tether is a scam — a claim bolstered by Tether’s seeming refusal or inability to release an audit — that artificially inflates the price of bitcoin. Even if this were not true, with almost $2.5 billion worth of USDT in circulation, a crumbling of the stablecoin — of which a temporary 13 percent price drop might be an early sign — would be more then enough to spook cryptocurrency investors and the market at large.

Which appears to be exactly what we’re seeing. On Monday, the exchange Bitfinex, which the New York Times reported last November is “owned and operated by the same people” as Tether, issued a statement declaring that it would “temporarily pause fiat deposits (USD, GBP, EUR, JPY) for certain customer accounts in the face of processing complications.”

Bloomberg suggests that concerns over those “processing complications,” and what they mean for Bitfinex’s relationships with banks, led to a crisis of confidence in Tether and a corresponding sell-off. That sell-off, in turn, both drove down USDT’s price and simultaneously drove up bitcoin’s as traders sought to dump their Tether for BTC.

None of this was helped by the fact that the exchange Binance temporarily suspended Tether withdraws (they have since resumed).

Binance suspends Tether withdrawals.

I thought the whole point of Tether was that it could be freely transferred without worrying about banks?

Guess it was bullshit. pic.twitter.com/VhEAw1TMDb

— Bitfinex’ed 🐧 (@Bitfinexed) October 15, 2018

Meanwhile, traders are running to stablecoins other than Tether. TrueUSD, a stablecoin that is also supposedly pegged to the U.S. dollar, surged to as high as $1.07 on Bittrex in the last 24 hours. In other words, people were willing to pay a 7 percent premium to hold something that wasn’t Tether.

SEE ALSO: Tether and Bitfinex subpoenaed by the CFTC as Bitcoin drops below $10K

What all this means for the future of Tether specifically, and stablecoins more broadly, isn’t exactly exactly clear. However, what it means for today perhaps is. Namely, “stable” might be more of a suggestion than an accurate descriptor.

HBO’s ‘Watchmen’ series teased in a puzzling Instagram post

Image: Mashable composite/Getty images

2016%2f09%2f16%2f63%2fhttpsd2mhye01h4nj2n.cloudfront.netmediazgkymde1lza2.c97cfBy Adam Rosenberg

Who watches the Watchmen? Everyone, once Damon Lindelof’s take on the classic graphic novel comes to HBO.

The in-production series is supposed to air on the premium cable network sometime in 2019. This teasing first look, via the official Watchmen Instagram… well, it doesn’t tell us much, actually.

A few things to highlight here. First, the color yellow plays an important role in the Watchmen comics. Here we see it on some kind of face mask, but bright splashes of yellow in the comics usually lined up with the iconic smiley face dripping blood logo from The Comedian’s button.

SEE ALSO: ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ NYCC panel debuts the first 35 minutes

There’s also the face mask itself. In the comics, the character Rorschach is a crime-fighting vigilante who wears a white face mask adorned with shifting ink blots. The mask seen in this Insta share doesn’t look like Rorschach’s, but he’s the only character who wears something even remotely like it.

How or if this image relates to those elements from the comics remains to be seen. This Insta post is the first formal tease HBO’s released for the Watchmen series. But the lack of obvious connection to the comic book source may be by design.

Back in May, Lindelof shared on Instagram an open letter to all Watchmen fans. In it, he talked… well… about a lot of things, actually. But one of those things, arguably the most important, was a vague sense of how he’s approaching Watchmen.

“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the 12 issues Mr. [Alan] Moore and Mr. [Dave] Gibbons created thirty years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted,” Lindelof wrote.

“They will, however, be remixed.” Lindelof went on to explain that how his Watchmen will be set in the world Moore and Gibbons created, but that “some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them.”

Could that be what we’re seeing here? No one outside of Lindelof and his team can say. But we’re intrigued to learn more.

NFL Trade Rumors: Raiders Seeking 1st-Round Pick for Amari Cooper Deal

The Oakland Raiders are setting a steep price for any team interested in acquiring two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday the Raiders hope to get a first-round draft pick in return for Cooper. Rapoport noted Oakland’s demand “might make it difficult—if not impossible” to deal Cooper.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported Sunday the Raiders were shopping Cooper and 2016 first-round draft pick Karl Joseph:

FOX Sports: NFL @NFLonFOX

After already trading Khalil Mack, @JayGlazer reports that the Raiders have been in discussions to trade former first round picks Amari Cooper and Karl Joseph. https://t.co/6QrogAHNAQ

Head coach Jon Gruden issued what could arguably be termed a non-denial denial following his team’s 27-3 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.

I don’t know. No, I haven’t heard that,” Gruden said of the trade rumors, per Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson. “You know, I’m not, I’m not, you know, I’m just, uh, sorry to have to deal with a lot of these reports. But, uh, I just hope Amari’s OK. Like I said, he’s going to be a big part of our pass offense.”

Flipping Cooper for a draft pick or two would allow Gruden to continue shaping the Raiders’ future to his preferences.

The team already traded Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears for first-round picks in 2019 and 2020, a 2020 third-rounder and a 2019 sixth-rounder. Granted, Oakland also surrendered a 2020 second-round pick and conditional fifth-round pick.

Mack was one of the elite players at his position, which allowed the Raiders to get back multiple high draft picks from Chicago. Cooper, on the other hand, has taken a step backward after the second of his Pro Bowl appearances in 2016, and he’s on pace for the worst year of his NFL career in 2018.

Through six games, the 24-year-old has 22 receptions for 280 yards and a touchdown. He sits 24th among qualified receivers in DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement), per Football Outsiders.

Cooper’s contract further complicates matters. The Raiders picked up his fifth-year option in April, which means his salary-cap hit will climb from $7.2 million in 2018 to $13.9 million in 2019, according to Spotrac. Then he’d potentially be in line for another pay raise when he becomes a free agent ahead of the 2020 season.

Perhaps Oakland isn’t dead set on the idea of trading Cooper and just wants to see if a team is willing to go above and beyond to acquire him.

If the Raiders truly don’t see Cooper as part of their long-term outlook and want to go in a different direction, then that’s probably not going to happen until they lower their demands.

The 1975’s Dizzying ‘Love It If We Made It’ Video Is A Sparkling Vision Of Life In 2018

YouTube/SME/UMG

Another month, another staggeringly beautiful music video from The 1975.

In late August, the Manchester pop group reveled in youth — or maybe more appropriately, the youthfulness of their fans — for the warm and wonderful “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” visual. Now, band leader Matty Healy is back in an Adam Powell-directed video, this time ceding control of the aesthetic to sparkling, powerful sloganeering of the song’s lyrics.

And as they delve into anti-Black police brutality, the opioid epidemic, President Trump’s tricky history with sexual misconduct, and more, it’s only fitting to let those scenes speak for themselves.

There’s a break in the action around 2:11 in that’s equally as incredible, showcasing a synchronized dance break that evokes Michael Jackson’s gritty ’80s clips in an effort to physicalize the angst. It’s redoubled during the end credits, with a specific message: “”If I don’t get to see the beauty of the end of culture / Then at least I’ve seen the culture of the end of reality.”

“Love It If We Made It” ends with a collage of the variegated, colorful faces of young people — visual punctuation that enforces once again that yes, they’re the future. Or, we’re the future, Healy included, whose image is the last one we see before it digitally drips away.

The 1975’s third album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, is due out November 30th. Check out the dazzling music video above.

Man goes skinning dipping in shark tank, and he’s lucky his ween didn’t get bit off

Some would call this stunt … Adult Swim.

On Friday, a man decided to jump into the expansive 2.9 million liter tank at Ripley’s Aquarium in Toronto, in the nude. The massive tank is the largest exhibit at the Canadian aquarium, and allows visitors to view stunning close-up views of sea turtles, sharks, and most recently, a human genitalia.

SEE ALSO: French beach town bans swimming because of a very horny dolphin

To the surprise and horror of aquarium guests, the underwater tank allowed a full frontal view of the man’s junk. As he lazily backstroked among the marine life, a man in the background yelled, “Guy’s really naked!”

Warning: The video linked below contains a full view of this man’s penis. Watch at your own risk.

In another very, very NSFW video someone posted from the top of the tank, the man climbs out of the water to a rowdy crowd of onlookers. To the crowd’s delight, he flops into the exhibit again with a poorly executed backflip. As the crowd cheers, fed up aquarium security storms over to admonish him.

According to CBC, Toronto police haven’t been able to locate the man after he left the aquarium at the request of security. He could be charged with trespassing, mischief, and indecent exposure.

Although none of the animals were harmed during the stunt, Toronto police spokesperson Jenifferjit Sidhu called it “extremely dangerous.”

“It put the man’s safety in jeopardy, the safety of the marine animals and the safety of the staff who tried to get him out of the water,” Sidhu told CBC.

The police have launched an investigation into the mystery aquarium skinny dipper.

Myles Turner, Pacers Reportedly Agree on 4-Year, $80 Million Contract Extension

The Indiana Pacers reportedly agreed Monday to sign Myles Turner to a four-year, $80 million extension, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Turner is owed $3.4 million for 2018-19, the final year of his rookie contract. He would have become a restricted free agent next offseason had he not signed an extension.

Keith Smith of RealGM noted the financial impact of this deal for Indiana:

Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA

Turner was due to have a ~$10M cap hold in the offseason. This eats about $8-10M into Indiana’s cap space this summer. Pacers can still get to $35-40M in cap space without much problem. https://t.co/wtdkXPMC9O

Turner took a bit of a step back last season, averaging 12.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in 65 appearances. This came after he averaged 14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2016-17 playing alongside Paul George.

The 22-year-old did rank third in the league with 1.8 blocks per game, and he also set career highs with 56 made three-pointers on 35.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

That versatility at 6’11” makes him a dangerous player in today’s NBA and a key part of the Pacers’ chances of contention in the Eastern Conference.

“Myles is amazing,” All-Star Victor Oladipo said of his teammate, per J. Michael of the Indianapolis Star. “He’s changed his body. You can see it. He’s more confident. His head is in the right place.”

With Bojan Bogdanovic, Darren Collison, Thaddeus Young and Cory Joseph all set to hit free agency in 2019, the Pacers have now locked in at least one high-upside sidekick for Oladipo beyond this coming season.

US midterms: How they work and why they matter

US midterm elections are scheduled for November 6, and the vote is largely expected to be a referendum on President Donald Trump‘s performance since taking office.

Held every four years, midterm elections occur halfway through every presidential term. Midterms generally garner low voter participation, but the Pew Research Center recently published a poll that found increased enthusiasm among voters this year.

November’s vote will determine the future of Trump’s legislative agenda, with Democrats hoping to take back a majority in the US Congress. Republicans currently enjoy a majority in both chambers of Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives.

This year all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and 39 state and territories governorships are up for grabs.

How do midterms work?

Every two years, all 435 House seats are up for election. But in the Senate, where elected officials serve staggered six-year terms, one-third of the seats are decided during midterms.

In the House, 218 seats are necessary for a majority, while 51 seats constitute a majority in the Senate.

Additionally, state races will decide the elected representatives for state legislatures and dozens of governorships during midterm elections. Thousands of seats in state houses and senates will also be up for grabs this year.

How many people vote?

According to the US Census Bureau, 157.6 million people reported being registered to vote in the US.

Voter turnout is generally around 40 percent during midterms, according to FairVote. But Pew’s new poll suggests that more than half of registered voters will take to the ballot box this year.

With the country increasingly polarised by Trump, more voters could cast their votes in November.

Turnout for House primaries was nearly 20 percent, which marks a large increase compared with previous years, according to Pew. That poll found that turnout was higher for both Democrats and Republicans, but that Democrats bested their Republican counterparts, growing by 4.6 percentage points.

Why do midterms matter?

For the viability of President Trump’s policy agenda, the turnout of the midterms will be a decisive factor. If Republicans can hold a majority in Congress, Trump can expect less resistance while pushing through his policies. If Democrats can take back the Congress, they could disrupt Trump’s policy plans and stop him from implementing a number of campaign promises.

For instance, if Democrats controlled Congress, they could block his ongoing efforts to crack down on immigrants, including the building of the wall on the US-Mexico border, efforts to remove Obama-era protections for undocumented immigrants and restrict the actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

After the controversy surrounding the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, whose hearings focused on several allegations that he was complicit in sexual assault, Democrats see the midterms as an opportunity to prevent Trump’s future Supreme Court nominations. Without taking a majority in the Senate, the upper house of Congress, Democrats would be unable to achieve this goal.

Most importantly, a Democratic majority in Congress could potentially launch impeachment proceedings against Trump, a threat that the president and his party have emphasised to encourage Republican voters to take to the ballot box next month.

Meanwhile, many state legislatures play an important role in redistricting processes, healthcare access, budgetary decisions and civil rights legislation, among others.

Gubernatorial elections could also usher in significant changes. In Florida, Governor Rick Scott has undone efforts to restore voting rights to convicted felons, at least 1.5 million of whom are disenfranchised in that state.

And whichever party takes control will wield influence over the next redistricting process, slated to take place in 2020.

What are the main issues?

The largest partisan divides between Republicans and Democrats stemmed from immigration, healthcare and the role of the US in the world, according to a Pew survey.

According to the September Pew report, about 75 percent of voters ranked healthcare as a “very important”.

Women’s rights, Supreme Court nominations and the economy also stand out as important factors in the upcoming midterms.

Additionally, the Pew survey found that race was a central issue, with 85 percent of Democrats supporting more efforts towards equality for African Americans, compared with only 29 percent of Republicans.

What can you expect?

The final outcome of the midterms will likely depend on results in several key races across the country. Some of the most important races include the election for Republican Jeff Flake’s seat. Flake is not seeking re-election this year and the current race between Republic Martha McSally and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema is too close to call, according to a number of projection websites.

Many are also keeping an eye on tight Senate races in Indiana, Florida, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota, and West Virginia, among others.

There are also a number of key races in the House, including California’s 25th and 48th districts, Kentucky’s 6th District, Texas’s 32nd District, New York’s 19th District, Illinois’s 14th District, Iowa’s 1st District, among several others.

Last month, a record number of people – 800,000 – registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day, although it remains unclear how many will show up on voter day.

According to FiveThirtyEight’s most recent predictions, Democrats have a one-in-five chance of taking control of the Senate, while their chances of gaining a majority in the House sit at 81.3 percent.

The website’s statistics also found that Trump’s approval rating is currently 41.8 percent, and the percentage of those who disapprove of the president is more than 52 percent.

In the increasingly unlikely scenario that Republicans lose control of both the Senate and the House, they would no longer be able to pass laws without the support of Democrats.

And if Democrats took control of the Senate, they would be able to block Trump’s nominations for judges and other positions.

But if the Republican Party maintains its grip on both or either chambers, Democrats ability to challenge Trump’s agenda will be significantly reduced.

Bazzi Tells Us About The Enchanting Love Story In His ‘Beautiful’ Video With Camila Cabello

YouTube

Bazzi and Camila Cabello got the week started on a most magical note on Monday (October 15) with the release of their long-awaited “Beautiful” video.

The stunning visual, directed by Jason Koenig, takes the pair to New Orleans for a whimsical Cinderella story. Cabello’s dressed like the “beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful angel” Bazzi sings about — wings and all — and they take to the city’s French Quarter for a cat-and-mouse game that ends on a bittersweet note. Speaking to MTV News about the visual, Bazzi explained that they wanted to put a “1930s, ’40s twist” on the “classic, pristine” scenery in New Orleans.

“We wanted to make something that felt very classic and something that puts you in a different world, visually — kind of like what the song does, sonically,” he explained. “We knew being in New Orleans, it’d really capture that elegant beauty that the song holds. It just felt perfect.”

Originally the 13th track on Bazzi’s Cosmic album, “Beautiful” got revamped back in early August, when Cabello contributed a new verse to her former tourmate’s track. Before that, Bazzi had released a video for the original version, which was packed with religious imagery and epic CGI effects. The new vid, however, puts “a different perspective on the song,” Bazzi said. It’s one that’s more grounded in reality, though there are some supernatural elements, as seen in the climactic scene where Bazzi and Cabello finally come face-to-face on a ballroom floor that transforms into an enchanted forest.

The new version also takes heavy cues from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. Bazzi said the video is “completely inspired” by the 1996 flick, particularly in his favorite scene: the fish tank meet-cute — a.k.a. one of the all-time love-at-first-sight scenes — which Bazzi and Cabello gorgeously recreate.

“The fish tank scene was really, really memorable and cool to me,” Bazzi said. “It’s the first time we see each other in the video. It’s just so magical — the moment on camera was so perfect. It didn’t take any finessing.”

The “Beautiful” video was shot in one “very, very long day,” but it marked a welcome reunion for Bazzi and Cabello, who remain good friends after he opened on her Never Be the Same tour earlier this year.

“She’s such a good friend and she’s so cool, and it’s really fun shooting with someone like that all day,” he said. “She brings such a high level of performance in her acting. It almost pulls you up to a certain level. It’s like, if she’s there and she’s competing at that level, I’m going to be, too.”

The result is a visual that Bazzi admits may be his favorite he’s ever done. “It might rank as number one,” he said. “Everything looked so amazing and so clean and pristine. It felt so iconic.”
