Is anyone else, like, exhausted?

Shane Dawson definitely is — he appears more and more frazzled with every episode of his docu-series on Jake Paul. In part 7, he talks to Alissa Violet, Jake’s rumored ex-girlfriend who has publicly accused him of assaulting her and revealed an ugly side of their relationship from her Team 10 days.

SEE ALSO: Shane Dawson somehow gets you to feel bad for Jake Paul in part 6 of his docu-series

Alissa is a controversial figure in YouTube’s circle of influencers; her public on/off relationship with Jake was rife with accusations of cheating, manipulation, and emotional abuse. She says that Jake didn’t “physically abuse” her, but that he would roughhouse so hard during video filming, she’d end up covered in scratches and cuts. At one point, he dragged her down the stairs.

Their highly publicized fighting culminated in a messy breakup that resulted in Jake kicking Alissa out of the Team 10 house by tossing her belongings in the foyer and locking her out of her bedroom.

But as Alissa told Shane, they never defined their murky relationship.

“We never dated officially, ever,” she says in The Ex Girlfriend of Jake Paul. “Jalissa was fake.”

Although the two apparently never agreed on exclusivity or set romantic expectations, Alissa said that they would still hook up.

“I had chased him for so long, I wanted him to be my boyfriend,” she tells Shane. He would brush her off and avoid the conversation, so “we never really established what we were.”

While leading her on, she claims that he was also bringing Instagram models to the mansion under the guise of signing them onto Team 10. In an anecdote that sounds eerily similar to the #MeToo stories that have been revealed over the past year, Alissa says that Jake would sleep with the women and never actually add them to his company.

“It was like he used Team 10 to have girls over, and I never knew what I was with him,” Alissa says, ranting that she would sleep with him, leave for the day, and come back to Jake in bed with another woman. “We were never dating. Ever. He was literally fucking girls in front of me.”

it fucking sucks being so emotionally damaged by a person who you thought would always be there for you

— Alissa Violet (@AlissaViolet) February 21, 2017

But he needed her for his videos — although they never DTR’d, his videos had better traffic if she was in his thumbnail.

Alissa confesses that she looked “so annoyed” on his channel not only because of their ambiguous relationship, but because she couldn’t get out of Team 10. Despite putting up with daily mental abuse and pining over an emotionally unavailable boy, she was contractually obligated to stay in the house. She couldn’t afford to buy a car or find her own apartment because a majority of the revenue went to Team 10.

The toxic situation took a turn when she slept with Logan, Jake’s brother. Alissa claims that the rest of Team 10 left for a group trip to a ski lodge, but she wasn’t allowed to go because Jake wanted to hook up with someone else and didn’t want her “in the way.”

“I was so pissed off, I was so hurt, I was so disgusted,” she tells Shane. She went clubbing with Logan and ended up hooking up with him instead, and when she asked him to keep the one night stand quiet, he stuck to his brand.

“I’m a savage, I’m a maverick,” Alissa says, imitating Logan. “I just feel like I was a pawn in their game. They’re always trying to one up each other. I was just like, a goal.”

When word got out, Alissa was slut-shamed by Jake’s preteen fans, her former Team 10 roommates, and most disturbingly of all, Jake and Logan’s father, Greg Paul. She says that Logan laughed while Greg berated her as a “whore and a slut.”

Twitter users were heavily split on Shane’s coverage — some thought he was too kind to Jake in wake of Alissa’s allegations against him.

shane really owns my ass i barely wake up for flights and meetings but i set an alarm for when episode 7 dropped what is wrong with me

— lil phag (@elijahdaniel) October 16, 2018

so basically the juice is that logan and greg paul are the real pepetrators, jake is a victim of circumstance which lead to him making poor choices, and we should really stop slut shaming alissa violet

— donald duck lovebot (@mousekink) October 16, 2018

Alissa Violet: Tells her frustrating and sad story.

Shane Dawson: Sits there quietly with almost a blank face.

Jake Paul: Does the same.

Shane: Aww you poor thing you are just a human I believe in you there there you are actually really genuine and a nice guy!

Me: What the fuck.

— Mari 🐼 (@marifromfinland) October 16, 2018

The amount of sadness on Alissa’s face talking about how she was emotionally and mentally abused… i really hope shes in a good place

🍒 lil bitch 🍒 (@cheesypesto) October 16, 2018

Alissa, however, appears to have moved forward. She tells Shane that she’s been trying to ease herself back into the world of vlogging, but that she thinks the era of YouTube drama is over.

“I almost feels like everyone’s on the same level,” Shane starts.

“Of owning up to their shit?” Alissa says. “Everyone’s just exhausted, and we’re over it, and we don’t want to be faking it anymore. We just want to make real shit, we want to be cool creators and move on.”

After seven tiring episodes, everyone — Shane especially — needs a vacation from the drama.

In The Mind of Jake Paul finale, Shane sits down with Jake for an in-depth, soul-bearing final interview. Stay tuned.

Harris advisers plot 2020 strategy: ‘The SEC primary meets the West Coast offense’

Sen. Kamala Harris

While Sen. Kamala Harris has yet to announce she is running for president in 2020, all signs point in that direction. | Jacquelyn Martin/AP Photo

Elections

The California senator hasn’t announced she’s running yet, but a potential path to the Democratic nomination is taking shape.

Sen. Kamala Harris’ advisers are privately discussing a rough Democratic primary strategy that would focus heavily on Iowa, but with an eye toward high-value nominating contests coming later in Nevada, South Carolina and California — more diverse states where her candidacy might resonate with larger minority communities.

Harris, a first-term senator, would still face significant obstacles in each of those states. But as a black woman who has also won statewide elections in California — where the black proportion of the electorate is relatively small — Harris could be well positioned to compete in both the Southeast and the West.

Story Continued Below

If she runs, she will attempt to stitch together a coalition of Democrats in those swaths of the country — what one adviser described to POLITICO as “the SEC primary meets the West Coast offense.”

While Harris has yet to announce she is running for president in 2020, all signs point in that direction — especially her upcoming travel schedule. She’ll make a stop this week in the South’s first primary state, South Carolina, and will likely campaign later this fall in California. On Monday, she touches down in Iowa for her first test of viability in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.

She’ll be in Iowa on Oct. 22-23, making appearances in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, with other stops expected to be added.

Harris’ advisers believe she can compete in Iowa based in part on her success courting white progressives in California and on former President Barack Obama’s victory there in 2008. Harris campaigned for Obama in the state that year.

The next nominating contest, in New Hampshire, presents a far heavier lift. She has yet to appear there, and several potential East Coast contenders — including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick — are all considered to have an edge in the state based on their name recognition and familiarity.

But if Harris can win over black voters in South Carolina, the first Southern primary, her advisers believe she could then win a spate of early Southern primaries with high black turnout — in 2016, 10 states with black primary turnout exceeding 25 percent had already held their nominating contests by mid-March. And North Carolina, another state with relatively high black turnout, is moving its primary in 2020 to early March, as well.

Meanwhile, Harris would campaign aggressively in Nevada and neighboring California, likely relying on supportive labor unions and activists in her home state to cross state lines and campaign for her in Nevada, as they have for Democratic allies in previous elections.

For Harris, California offers more than a home-state edge and a massive delegate haul. The state is physically distant from Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire, and it’s expensive to increase name recognition in the state’s large media markets, raising the prospect that some candidates will bypass it to conserve resources.

“We think it’s really, really hard to compete with her in California,” one adviser said.

Harris’ path in the early primary states — especially South Carolina — remains far from certain. Sen. Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat who is also black, has made inroads in South Carolina, and former Vice President Joe Biden has long-standing relationships in the state.

Lachlan McIntosh, a Democratic strategist based in South Carolina, said Biden “clearly has a head start in South Carolina, just like he kind of does everywhere.” But he said Harris “has a lot of potential here.”

“Kamala Harris is not known here by a lot of people, but that can change,” he said. “She could appeal to African American voters and to these white liberals.”

Echoing Harris’ advisers’ belief that Harris can perform well in Iowa and compete in New Hampshire, McIntosh said, “I think she has to compete, has to do well … in Iowa or New Hampshire.”

He said, “Not only the pundits, but also the voters — they want to narrow it down really quick.”

Every serious Democratic contender in 2020 will focus heavily on South Carolina due in part to its relatively small size and inexpensive cost of advertising. That may not be the case in California, but Harris would hit a different obstacle back home — several other Californians may run, including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, cutting into her home-state advantage.

“So much depends on the field,” said Rose Kapolczynski, a Democratic strategist in California. “None of these candidates are running in a vacuum … I mean, Kamala has a lot of appeal. She’s been really well received this year traveling around the country. But an African American strategy might stumble if Cory Booker’s in the race. California could deliver a resounding victory, or it could be split between [Rep. Eric] Swalwell and Garcetti and Harris and [Tom] Steyer and who knows who else.”

“People like Harris or Warren or name your candidate, a lot of these folks have been preparing for this for a very long time,” she said.

Google’s Play Store will no longer be free to Android phone makers in Europe

Months after being hit with a record-setting $5 billion fine from the EU, Google is making major changes to its policies in Europe.

For the first time in its history, Google will charge Android phone makers that want to sell devices with the Google Play Store and other apps pre-installed.

SEE ALSO: Google’s Pixel 3 and 3 XL are cameras first, phones second, and it shows

Under the new European rules, detailed by Google’s senior vice president of platforms Hiroshi Lockheimer, Android phone makers that want to sell devices with Google services pre-installed in Europe will need to pay a licensing fee to Google.

This includes the Play Store and other apps (like Gmail and YouTube) but does not include Google Search or Chrome, both of which will remain available to OEMs for free.

Additionally, Google will, for the first time, allow Android phone makers to ship devices with the Play Store pre-installed even if they are running “forked” versions of Android (custom versions of Android developed independently of Google). These variations of Android have long been popular outside of the U.S., but Google hasn’t typically allowed its services to ship on these “unofficial” variants, with Amazon’s FireOS being a notable exception.

The changes come after European regulators fined Google more than $5 billion for antitrust violations related to Android. At issue was Google’s practice of requiring Android phone makers to pre-install Google Search, Chrome, and other services on handsets in return for being able to use the Android operating system for free. Regulators said this gave Google an unfair advantage over competitors.

In his statement, Lockheimer emphasized that Google remains committed to keeping Android “free and open source,” despite the new changes, and noted that the company is still appealing the E.U.’s  decision.

‘No alternatives’: Thousands flee Honduras in US-bound caravan

Agua Caliente, Guatemala – Daysi Pena had a large smile after she crossed the border into Guatemala on Monday with three of her grandchildren.

It was the first of three borders they hope to cross with a migrant caravan from Honduras that now has well over 2,000 people and continues to grow.

“I made the decision to join because there is no other alternative. I was overwhelmed by fear,” Pena told Al Jazeera after entering Guatemala not far from Agua Caliente Border Crossing.

Pena raised her grandchildren in Chamelecon, a city with one of the highest murder rates in Honduras, which is among the world’s top 10 countries in terms of per capita homicide rates.

Now 12, 14 and 16 years old, the grandchildren she brought with her were abandoned by their mother. Their father has been living undocumented in the US for the past five years, and sends money for food when he can.

The family was living in fear of criminal gang activity in their neighbourhood. Gang members tried to recruit the two boys, but it is the threat to Pena’s 14-year-old granddaughter from gang members that prompted her to leave Honduras and travel north.

“One of them came over and told me she was going to be his and that if she was not his she would not be anyone’s. He would kill her,” Pena said. “It is not possible to argue with those people.”

Pena had planned to leave in December and try to make it to the US. Aside from the kids’ father, she also has a daughter who has been living legally in the US for 25 years.

But on Saturday, as she watched the news about the caravan leaving San Pedro Sula, she decided to leave then and there. Pena and her grandchildren, as well as one of her nephews took a bus on Sunday to meet up with the group in Ocotepeque, 21 kilometers from the Guatemalan border.

“We felt more strength. We felt safer,” Pena said of the decision to join the migrant caravan instead of waiting to leave on their own later this year.

Group initially stopped by Guatemala

Like Pena, the majority of those at the border only found out about the caravan on Saturday, when the group was leaving San Pedro Sula. Others found out and decided to join a day or two prior to departure.

An initial ad hoc group of fewer than 200 people had been planning the trip over Whatsapp chat groups. The migrant caravan has now well surpassed 2,000 people and hundreds more are on their way from different regions of Honduras.

Among them is William Alvarado, who made the trek seven years ago. Then, at the age of 16, he set out by himself, eventually making his way across the US-Mexico border without documents. He spent years in the US foster system before obtaining a green card. While on a visit home earlier this year, his wallet, along with his green card was stolen. Alvarado joined the caravan after US Embassy staff told him he should turn himself in at the border as a US immigration court would be able to resolve his case more quickly than they could.

Alvarado, Pena and the rest of the group crossed the border into Guatemala on Monday, but not without difficulty. When the caravan arrived at the Guatemalan side of the Agua Caliente border crossing shortly before noon, they found their path blocked by the Guatemalan national police.

For approximately two hours, dozens of police officers formed lines across the highway while governmental and non-governmental human rights representatives discussed the situation with officials.

Babies cried in the heat and high humidity and within a span of 10 minutes, two children fainted and were carried up into the area between police lines. Red Cross personnel brought in bags of water, but it was not enough to reach the back of the packed crowd on the highway.

Eventually families with infants and small children were allowed to pass. After another 30 minutes, the rest streamed into Guatemala, with many cheering ‘Yes we can!’ as they marched past riot police.

“We want to tell the authorities of Guatemala and tell the president of Guatemala that we are not doing anything wrong,” Pena said. “Our mission is just to pass through because the goal is to reach the United States.”

The group was stopped again as it made it way to Esquipulas, about 10km from the border crossing. For more than an hour, Guatemalan police blocked the highway. A section of the crowd closest to police held their identification documents in the air, requesting passage, which was eventually granted.

It was getting dark by the time the caravan arrived in Esquipulas, winding through the city streets on their way to shelters. Local residents showed up at intersections and in doorways, some to hand out water or express support and others out of curiosity.

The caravan was making its way up through southern Guatemala on Tuesday, but the next two borders they eventually plan to cross may prove even more difficult.

Trump issues warning

Both Mexico and the United States Embassy in Honduras issued statements over the weekend, saying migrants will need proper documentation to be able to cross their borders.

One Tuesday, Trump warned that if the caravan of migrants were not stopped, the US would cut off millions of dollars in aid to Honduras.

“The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large caravan of people heading to the US is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately.”

The warning came, however, after the caravan had already entered Guatemala.

Those travelling as part of the caravan know they may not make it to the US, and if they do what it may mean.

Trump’s zero-tolerance immigration policy was heavily scrutinised earlier this year when his administration implemented a practice of separating families at the border. Although the president has since put an end to the practice, hundreds of children remain separated from the families as Trump continues to try to make good on his promise of cracking down on immigration, especially as the November US midterm elections approach.

For Pena, the risks far outweigh the potential consequences of staying in Honduras. She said if they don’t make it to the US, she has family they could stay with in Mexico. The most important thing, she said, was getting her grandchildren out of their home country.

‘We’re getting our asses kicked’: Republicans massively out-raised in election homestretch

Elections

Ninety-two Democratic challengers outraised GOP House incumbents in the third quarter, while 33 Republicans trail in cash on hand.

Democratic challengers outraised Republican House incumbents in 92 House districts in the last three months — a staggering mismatch that boosts the odds of a GOP washout in November.

There is no historical precedent for financing this broad and deep for congressional challengers. About half of the 92 GOP incumbents are protecting battleground districts, and some of them posted personal-record fundraising totals in the third quarter of 2018 — but they still found themselves swamped by a combination of incandescent online fundraising for Democrats and bigger donors spreading money to challengers around the country, as 61 Democrats raised over $1 million. Fifty-one House Republicans were outraised at least 2-to-1, according to POLITICO’s analysis of the latest Federal Election Commission filings, while 71 were outspent by their challenger. Only five Democratic House incumbents were outraised.

Story Continued Below

Meanwhile, 33 GOP representatives have less cash on hand than their Democratic challengers, while no Democratic members lag their Republican opponents in cash. That cash on hand gap has been a particularly dire historical indicator: In the last four elections, two-thirds of the House incumbents who ended September with less cash to spend than their opponents lost their seats weeks later.

Typically, only a handful of incumbents find themselves in that position each year. But a high number of cash-swamped Democratic incumbents heralded the Republican wave election in 2010. That year, 18 House Democrats finished the third quarter with less cash on hand than opponents, and 10 went on to lose their seats weeks later.

The financial picture is even worse for the GOP in open districts, where Democrats lead Republicans in both fundraising and cash on hand in two-dozen contested seats, after an unusually high number of retirements before this election.

“The Democratic fundraising surge is emblematic of the intensity we have seen mounting for some time now,” said Ken Spain, a former National Republican Congressional Committee staffer. “The only thing the NRCC and the outside groups can do at this point is to do what they are currently doing – consolidate resources, cut bait in unwinnable districts and build a firewall that can hopefully hold through Election Day.”

Another Republican consultant, granted anonymity to speak candidly, put it more bluntly: “We’re getting our asses kicked. Nothing else to say.”

The record-breaking financial hauls — only 11 challengers in both parties raised over $1 million in the third quarter of 2016 — do not guarantee success to any candidate. Joe Radinovich, the Democratic nominee seeking to hold a northern Minnesota district for his party, and David Shapiro, who is challenging Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), both raised over $1 million last quarter. But the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is cutting TV ad reservations in both of those districts, according to a source familiar with the committee’s decision, a sign that the party does not like its odds in GOP-leaning district.

But in more competitive districts, the Democratic cash advantage allowed some challengers to kick off major advertising campaigns in August, earlier than ever before, to head off a deluge of attack ads from GOP outside groups.

Republican outside groups “flooding the zone in the last two weeks” was “what kept me up at night,” said former Rep. Steve Israel, who led the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2012 and 2014. “But Democrats have alleviated that headache by frontloading sustained, massive amounts of money, and at the end of the day, it will be enough to stem the tidal wave of Republican super PAC money that always comes in.”

That Republican outside money is still raining down on Democratic candidates. Officials from the House GOP’s flagship super PAC, Congressional Leadership Fund, said they expect to raise and spend $150 million on House races in 2018. A memo circulated last week by the group said that Republicans faced “a green wave, not a blue wave.”

CLF recently cut off a pair of Republican incumbents, Michigan Rep. Mike Bishop and Colorado Rep. Mike Coffman. Both members trail their Democratic challengers — Elissa Slotkin and Jason Crow, respectively — in fundraising as well as cash on hand. But the committee is also reengaging in races the GOP had once written off. CLF is starting a $1 million TV buy to defend GOP Rep. Rod Blum in Iowa, one of the party’s most endangered incumbents. And the super PAC is investing a mid-six-figure buy in Florida’s 27th District, a South Florida seat where Republican Maria Elvira Salazar is polling close to or ahead of Democrat Donna Shalala, who was once seen as a heavily favorite.

But “for the final push, when it really counts, Democrats have more resources to deploy in the closing weeks than Republicans,” said former Rep. Tom Davis, who chaired the NRCC for two election cycles in the 1990s and 2000s. “Republicans are going to have to cut off some of their members, and it makes those decisions harder on the Republican side than on the Democratic side.”

It’s not just GOP candidates falling behind on the fundraising front. The NRCC has also lagged behind the DCCC in fundraising, bringing in $150.5 million by the end of August to the DCCC’s $206.4 million, according to the most recent FEC filings.

“For over a year we’ve warned incumbents about what to expect from Democratic candidates in terms of fundraising,” Jesse Hunt, an NRCC spokesman, said in a statement. “After record breaking fundraising — an amount to date that’s $25 million more than the previous record — the NRCC has worked hard to level the playing field in battleground districts.”

A former NRCC official, granted anonymity to speak candidly about party fundraising, said that “these fundraising numbers should scare everyone,” adding that “the committee’s job is to focus on members and help them raise money, but the members are getting killed on fundraising, and so is the committee.”

The composition of the $1 million fundraising club cuts across all districts, from the palm tree-lined streets of Orange County to the cornfields of downstate Illinois to the northern Virginia suburbs — just across the river from Capitol Hill. In fact, more than half of the 61 million-dollar Democrats actually brought in at least $2 million to their campaigns.

Three California Democrats – Josh Harder, Katie Hill and Harley Rouda – all cracked the $3 million mark. Democrat Danny O’Connor, who narrowly lost a special election against Rep. Troy Balderson (R-Ohio) in August, raised the most last quarter, an eye-popping $5.9 million — much of which he spent in the Aug. 7 special. But O’Connor has $1 million to spend in the final weeks of the general election, while Balderson has just over $380,000 in the bank.

This election cycle has already featured the most expensive single House race in history: Democrat Jon Ossoff’s face-off against Republican Karen Handel in the 2017 Georgia special election. At the time, Republicans dismissed Ossoff’s online fundraising success as a singular fluke, particularly after Handel defeated him.

But Democrat Dean Phillips, who’s running against Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-Minn.) in the western suburbs of Minneapolis and raised $1.7 million last quarter, said that “if people believe that their investment matters and their participation matters, then this can last,” Phillips said.

“I think we’re showing that even under this broken system, change is possible,” said Phillips, who committed to not accepting any PAC money.

Antarctic ice sounds really creepy when it vibrates

In the faraway realms at the bottom of the Earth, Antarctic scientists have unexpectedly recorded bizarre drone-like sounds.

After burying 34 seismic monitors in the snow atop the Ross Ice Shelf in 2014 — which is a massive Texas-sized slab of ice that floats over the Southern Ocean — the instruments picked up near-constant “buzzing” noises.

While normally inaudible to the human ear, the researchers have made these ultra-low frequencies detectable to our limited hearing range. They posted the eerie sounds online, along with a Geophysical Research Letters report on their greater research.

“If this vibration were audible, it would be analogous to the buzz produced by thousands of cicada bugs when they overrun the tree canopy and grasses in late summer,” Douglas MacAyeal, a glaciologist at the University of Chicago who had no role in the research, wrote in a commentary.

SEE ALSO: Things in the middle of the Arctic are getting really strange

These glacier scientists, however, were not out to record any unsettling noises. Antartica is experiencing an accelerating loss of mass from its ice shelves, which act as plugs holding back the world’s largest stores of ice from flowing uninhibited into the ocean.

The real goal was to monitor changes on the Ross ice shelf as the greater ice-clad continent — under pressure from both relatively warm air above and seawater eating away ice from below — alter Antarctica’s massive glaciers and portend historically unprecedented sea level rise.

The vibrations themselves are believed to have been created by strong winds blowing across the dunes atop the Ross ice shelf, which vibrates the ice.

“It’s kind of like you’re blowing a flute, constantly, on the ice shelf,” Julien Chaput, a geophysicist at Colorado State University and lead author of the study, said in a statement.

An eerie flute, indeed.
