Corker rails against White House’s intel ‘clampdown’ on Khashoggi

The Tennessee’s Republican’s comments come as the president tells reporters it appears the journalist is dead.

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker warned the Trump administration on Thursday that its information “clampdown” on the alleged killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi can’t go on.

The Tennessee Republican said in an interview he sought to view recent U.S. intelligence on Monday and Tuesday regarding Khashoggi’s disappearance and likely murder in Turkey this month but was told by U.S. officials that he could not do so. Corker suggested that the administration’s current opaque position on who may have killed Khashoggi and whether Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is responsible may be untenable.

“This is going to come to a head in a very short amount of time. This isn’t getting better over time. It seems to me over the next week or so people are going to know more about what happened,” Corker said. “There has been a clampdown on any further intelligence updates to senators … it can’t go on that long, they need to come out and share their views of what happened and share with us.”

Corker, like many senators, said he believes that bin Salman is likely responsible for Khashoggi’s killing, though he concedes he isn’t yet certain. And the Trump administration’s decision to withhold its most recent intelligence from Corker, an occasional Trump critic, underscores the president’s desire to keep close information that could harm the Saudis position among members of Congress.

But even absent a smoking gun, some Republicans have been direct about bin Salmon’s involvement.

“This guy is a wrecking ball. He had this guy murdered in a consulate in Turkey, and to expect me to ignore it? I feel used and abused,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Fox News this week. Bin Salman “can never be a world leader on the world stage.”

President Donald Trump told reporters on Thursday that it “certainly looks like” Khashoggi is dead, calling it “very sad.”

The Senate Intelligence Committee is continuing to receive intelligence updates on Khashoggi, an aide said. But Corker said he has only been able to view intelligence that’s a week old or more. On Tuesday he asked to view intelligence in a secure compartment in the Capitol and received an “apologetic” call from an official who informed him that no more information would be given to members of Congress.

Corker said he is “disappointed” about the blackout, but he understands why the intelligence pipeline to Congress has stopped. The Trump administration, he said, is trying to regroup in the face of bipartisan outrage toward Saudi Arabia’s possible role in the death of a journalist.

The United States is often aligned with Saudi Arabia on fighting terrorism in the Middle East, and sells billions in weapons to the Saudis. Some senators have sought to block those sales, and they indicated in recent interviews that they will try once again after the midterm election. A recent effort failed in the Senate with little GOP support.

But Khashoggi’s apparent death has ramped up pressure on Republicans to do something about Saudi Arabia. The situation amounts to a no-win situation for many members of Congress.

“Some of my colleagues, their attitude seems to be, well, we’re going to cut them off like a dead stump, never talk to them again, punish the hell out of them the rest of their natural lives,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) on Wednesday. “That may make some people feel good for a while, but it’s not realistic if you want to contain the pressure cooker that is the Middle East.”

The president and his administration say that Congress is jumping to conclusions too quickly, and Trump has compared bin Salman’s treatment to that of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Saudi Arabia this week to discuss Khashoggi’s disappearance and briefed the president on it Thursday.

“They assured me they will complete, thorough investigation of all of the facts surrounding Mr. Khashoggi and will do so in a timely fashion. And that his report itself will be transparent,” Pompeo said. “I told President Trump this morning that we ought to give them a few more days to complete that.”

Kennedy said he did not believe the Saudis should be conducting the investigation. And if there is evidence that clears the Saudi Arabian leader, members of Congress want to see it soon.

“Everything that we’ve seen thus far is pointed at MBS,” Corker said. “We may well find out if MBS was not involved, though I would be shocked … I don’t think the administration can allow this to swirl around too much longer without taking a definitive position.”

Post Malone And Swae Lee Drop Their Swinging Spider-Man Soundtrack Single

Getty Images

Post Malone and Swae Lee have swung through with another must-hear collaboration. After teaming up for “Spoil My Night” from Post’s latest album, the rockstar and the Rae Sremmurd MC are back with “Sunflower,” a new song from the soundtrack for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

For their latest joint musical venture, Post and Swae commit fully to crooning, trading melodic and heartfelt verses inspired by the animated film’s hero, Miles Morales. Swae Lee kicks things off, singing, “You’re a sunflower, I think your love would be too much,” while Post reprises the hook: “Or you’ll be left in the dust / Unless I stick by ya / You’re the sunflower.” It’s a short, sweet, and synthy pop song that Swae recently dubbed “a majestic record.” Listen below to decide for yourself.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is set in a universe that features multiple Spider-Men, though the protagonist is Morales, a half-black, half-Puerto Rican teen from Brooklyn (he’s the one who sings along while pulling double duty as a high schooler and a city-saver in the above video). The film and its accompanying soundtrack — which also features music from Vince Staples — are out on December 14.

There have been a bunch of celebrities that have made their mark with some pretty iconic outfits this year. And now with Halloween just around the corner, the timing couldn’t be more perfect to look towards them for a little inspiration.

The pressure of trying to find the perfect costume can be annoyingly stressful, and we’ve all been there at some point. But celebrity costumes are an easy way to getting around this kind of dilemma.

SEE ALSO: 15 political Halloween costumes that aren’t Donald Trump

To make it easier for you, we have gathered a handful of celebrities to dress as this Halloween. From Cher to the Fab Five, take a look at some of the absolute best celebs to impersonate this year.

1. Kanye West and Lil Pump

Oh boy. I really want to know what was going on in the heads of everyone involved in the production of the “I Love It” music video. If you need something that will be easily recognizable and hilarious, look no further than this disaster that gives Lego characters a run for their money.

2. The Fab Five

The Fab Five is the universe’s gift to us that has helped us through a turbulent year. These five amazing men exude an immeasurable amount of positivity that very few could ever match.

While most of us could only hope to live up to their pure excellence, we can at least dress up as them for Halloween. What’s even better is that this works as a great group costume. So grab all of your friends, and unleash your fabulous energy upon your local neighborhood.

3. Lady Gaga as Ally

Gaga is known for fantastic looks that are known for creating moments in history. In the case of her recent movie debut, A Star is Born, her switch from blonde to brunette for the character Ally is just as iconic.

There are dozens of Lady Gaga costumes out there that are based off many of her legendary looks, but if you want to be different, Ally is a pretty solid option. It’s current, it’s identifiable, and most importantly, it’s Gaga. You can’t go wrong.

4. Frances McDormand at the Met Gala

There were some pretty amazing outfits at this year’s Met Gala, but Frances McDormand took it to a very strange level. This bizarre Valentino dress in conjunction with a larger-than-life Philip Treacy floral headpiece certainly had people talking.

Whether or not it’s your taste, this whole look was certainly a moment in Gala fashion history. If you’re willing to make an odd, yet trendy reference this Halloween, this look is definitely worth checking out.

5. Cher as Ruby

I mean how am I supposed to feel like in a mamma mia movie if no one sings lay all your love on me with me and Cher doesn’t come flying on an helicopter WHERE IS SHE pic.twitter.com/ofR5mjtjnP

— Pepello 🌈 (@pepello) October 12, 2018

This summer brought us Cher in the form of Ruby in the campy sequel to Mamma Mia. Her appearance was legendary, her voice was great, and of course the outfit she had on nothing short of stunning.

This pop powerhouse has had so many Halloween costumes based off her looks over the years, so dressing up as Cher for Halloween is a safe bet. But, if you want to turn it up a notch and do something a little more timely, Ruby is a great option to consider.

6. Trixie and Katya

Late last year, RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova got their own TV series on Viceland based off their successful and viral web series “UNHhhh.” This drag queen duo are two of the most recognizable queens from the television show, and thanks to their friendship and fantastic humor, they have managed to sink their acrylic nails into the heartstrings of audiences across the nation.

If you’re looking to do a fun couples costume, or want to dress up with your best friend, a look based off of one of their episodes is a fantastic idea. There are dozens of different outfits to choose from, so get the Trixie to your Katya and make a decision ASAP.

7. Sarah Paulson as Wilhemina Venable

If you’re watching this season of American Horror Story you’ll probably recognize Sarah Paulson’s character Wilhemina Venable. This lady may be one stone cold human being, but her outfit, hair, and makeup more than compensate for her cruelty.

If you’re looking for something spooky, yet current, taking this character from the current season of AHS is your best bet.

The Oakland Raiders have reportedly been punished by the NFL for violating the league’s injury report policy.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Raiders were fined $20,000 after failing to downgrade offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele‘s status from questionable to out after he didn’t travel to Los Angeles in Week 5 for a game against the Chargers.

Osemele didn’t practice with the team leading up to Week 5 due to a knee injury he suffered the previous week against the Cleveland Browns.

Under the NFL’s injury report policy, teams are required to submit updated practice information to the league’s intranet site by 4 p.m. ET each day, or as soon as possible after practice is completed.

Osemele has missed each of Oakland’s last two games due to his injury. The Raiders are on a bye this week following their 27-3 loss against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6.

Kamala Harris proposes big new middle-class tax break

Kamala Harris.

Sen. Kamala Harris, a potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, wants to create a new $6,000 “refundable” tax credit for families earning up to $100,000, meaning they could claim the credit even if it’s more than they owe. | Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Sen. Kamala Harris, a potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, today proposed a big new tax break for average Americans.

The California Democrat wants to create a new $6,000 tax credit for families earning up to $100,000. The break would be “refundable,” which means people could claim it even if it exceeded their tax liabilities, by receiving a check from the government for the difference.

Story Continued Below

She wants to allow recipients to claim it throughout the year, up to $500 per month, rather than having to wait to get a lump sum after they file their taxes.

Harris says it’s intended to help families cope with the cost of living, though it’s also surely designed to contrast with Republicans’ recent tax-code rewrite.

“We should put money back into the pockets of American families to address rising costs of childcare, housing, tuition and other expenses,” Harris said in a statement. “Our tax code should reflect our values and instead of more tax breaks for the top 1 percent and corporations, we should be lifting up millions of American families.”

The plan would be pricey, and it comes at a time when the government is already running a nearly $800 billion budget deficit.

Harris’s office said it doesn’t yet know exactly how much the plan would cost, but that Harris would finance it in part by repealing the parts of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, hr1, that benefit people earning more than $100,000. She would also impose a new bank tax on institutions with more than $50 million in assets.

The plan would increase the number of Americans – currently about 44 percent – who are effectively excused from paying income taxes.

Zayn Tries And Fails To Play It Smooth On New Song ‘Fingers’

Getty Images

Zayn‘s string of 2018 releases have really run the gamut, genre-wise — from the poppy “Let Me,” to the rocking “Sour Diesel,” to the Timbaland collab “Too Much” — but the crooner’s newest single brings him right back to Mind Of Mine territory.

“Fingers” is an alluring slow jam about texting and unrequited love, with Z playing the part of the brooding yearner. “I’ve been fucked and I want ya / I can’t even text ya / ‘Cause my fingers ain’t broken, but my heart is,” he laments over a pitched-up vocal sample, with his signature hazy tone. He admits he’s not as “smooth” as he wants to be, but he admirably finds the will to send one last text: “If you wanna let me know where you hiding, I could come and love you.”

It’s unclear if this is the “sick tune” Zayn thinks is fit for a Cardi B feature, but no doubt she’d sound phenomenal on this — it’s got a “Ring“-esque quality to it.

“Fingers” is presumably the latest taste of Zayn’s currently unscheduled sophomore album, the follow-up to 2016’s Mind Of Mine. At this point, the project is still shrouded in mystery, but Z’s had a pretty productive 2018, dropping a handful of buzz tracks and a few action-packed music videos. Hopefully he’ll bring “Fingers” to life in a similarly unique way — and drop some clues about that new album.

G League Offering ‘Professional Path’ to NBA for Prospects with $125K Contracts

The NBA G League is making a significant play that could lead some of the nation’s top amateur basketball players to skip college altogether.

Per ESPN.com’s Jonathan Givony, the G League will offer a “professional path” deal starting in the summer of 2019 that includes “select contracts” worth up to $125,000 for elite players who are at least 18 years of age but not eligible for the NBA draft.

The professional path system presents an alternative to the NBA’s rule that requires players to be 12 months removed from high school graduation to be eligible for the draft.

Since players who sign with the G League won’t be limited by NCAA restrictions, they will be eligible to sign with an agent and sign marketing deals with apparel companies.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski is skeptical many top college recruits will go for this deal because the G League is “full of early connecting flights, long bus rides [and] small gyms.” He added major college basketball “has the trappings of exposure, packed houses, private jets. You’ll get paid there too.”

Per Givony, many NBA agents believe this deal has the potential to gain significant traction, while some major college programs are “understandably nervous and want to learn more.”

Kentucky head coach John Calipari doesn’t seem too concerned about this move by the G League:

John Calipari @UKCoachCalipari

During the NBA owners meetings in July, commissioner Adam Silver told reporters there was increasing momentum around the league to eliminate the one-and-done rule, which has been in place since 2006:

“It won’t come immediately, but … when I weighed the pros and cons—[and] given that [former Secretary of State] Condoleezza Rice and her [NCAA] commission has recommended to the NBA that those one-and-done players now come directly into the league and, in essence, the college community is saying, ‘We do not want those players anymore,’ I mean that sort of tips the scale in my mind that we should be taking a serious look at lowering our age to 18.”

Givony noted any change to the rule likely won’t come until 2022 at the earliest.

Another potential issue for the G League is the working relationship between the NBA and NCAA.

ESPN.com’s Brian Windhorst reported Tuesday that the NBA, NCAA and National Basketball Players Association have reached an agreement with USA Basketball that will allow a total of 80 players to receive health and wellness training from professional teams.

The current G League salary structure includes a base salary of $7,000 per month with additional money earned through affiliate bonus programs and potential NBA call-ups.

Pompeo pushes to give Saudis more time for Khashoggi investigation

Foreign Policy

The secretary of state says people should be ‘mindful’ that Saudi Arabia is a strategic U.S. partner.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday he told President Donald Trump to give Saudi Arabia “a few more days” to complete its probe into the disappearance and alleged murder of Washington Post journalist and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump dispatched Pompeo to Riyadh earlier this week for talks with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and his son Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince. The secretary has taken heat for his amiable interactions with the monarch after images were released of Pompeo smiling with him on camera.

Story Continued Below

Pompeo told reporters that the Saudis assured him they would conduct a thorough and transparent investigation and would make the results available to the public.

“This report itself will be transparent for everyone to see, to ask questions about … I told President Trump we ought to give them a few more days to complete that so that we, too, have a complete understanding of the facts surrounding that — at which point, we can make decisions about how or if the United States should respond to the incident surrounding Mr. Khashoggi,” Pompeo said on Thursday.

Turkish officials have told U.S. media outlets that Khashoggi was dismembered alive and beheaded by a team of Saudis inside the consulate and that audio evidence of his death exists. Trump has requested audio or video intelligence, though he has cast doubt on whether it exists.

As other members of the administration have done in the past two weeks, Pompeo on Thursday pivoted to a “long, strategic relationship” with Saudi Arabia to deflect what has been a cacophony of calls to action against the Middle Eastern kingdom.

“They continue to be an important counterterrorism partner. They have custody of the two holy sites. They’re an important strategic alliance of the United States,” Pompeo told reporters. “We need to be mindful of that as well.”

Even as Pompeo urged patience with the Saudis, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced he would pull out of a Saudi investment conference dubbed “Davos in the Desert” that was scheduled for next week. Mnuchin had been under pressure for days to cancel the trip, especially as a growing number of business leaders, entrepreneurs and media outlets said they would not attend the conference.

“Just met with @realDonaldTrump and @SecPompeo and we have decided, I will not be participating in the Future Investment Initiative summit in Saudi Arabia,” Mnuchin wrote on Twitter.

Public outcry has mounted on Pompeo for being seemingly being overly trustworthy of the powerful crown prince, who denies any kind of knowledge about Khashoggi’s whereabouts. Republicans and Democrats alike in Congress have chastised the administration for not outwardly pressuring Saudi Arabia enough for answers, raising the possibility of imposing sanctions on Saudi Arabia if they are found to be responsible for Khashoggi’s death.

In a much-criticized exchange with reporters about his meeting before departing Riyadh, Pompeo resisted revealing any details of the ongoing Saudi investigation. “I don’t want to talk about any of the facts,” Pompeo said. “They didn’t want to either, in that they want to have the opportunity to complete this investigation in a thorough way.

And on Wednesday, The New York Times reported that just as Pompeo landed in Riyadh for his meeting with the Saudi royals, the Saudis deposited a payment of $100 million in U.S. accounts for “American efforts to stabilize areas in Syria liberated from the Islamic State.”

But CNN also reported Thursday that behind closed doors, Pompeo had a tense conversation with the crown prince, telling him that Saudi Arabia had to own the situation because his future as king depended on it.

Asked by reporters why the Saudis should be trusted to conduct an impartial investigation, Pompeo said on Thursday that the public will eventually get a chance to judge the results.

“We’re all going to get to see the work, the response that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia takes with this,” Pompeo said. “When we see that, we’ll get a chance to determine, all of us will get to make a determination with respect to the credibility and the work that went into that — whether it’s truly accurate, fair, transparent in the very way they made a personal commitment to me, and the crown prince also made a personal commitment to the president when he spoke to him.”
