Pelosi: Trump needs ‘an intervention’ after White House blow-up

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that Donald Trump needs “an intervention” after his latest “temper tantrum” at the White House, ratcheting up her criticism of a president she says is not fit for office.

“I wish that his family or his administration or his staff would have an intervention for the good of the country,” Pelosi told reporters a day after the president stormed out of a meeting on infrastructure and the two leaders held dueling press conferences.

“What goes on there? Who’s in charge? And he says he’s in charge. And I suspect that he may be,” Pelosi added. “And I suspect he may be even more since yesterday, because I don’t think that any responsible assistant to the president of the United States would have advised him to do what he did yesterday.”

Pelosi’s comments underscore how eager she is to keep pummeling Trump, even as she resists an effort from a growing number of House Democrats to impeach the president, for fear that it would backfire politically.

In one exchange with a reporter, Pelosi appeared to jokingly reference the 25th amendment to the Constitution, which allows the Cabinet to remove a president from office if he can’t perform his duties.

“Article 25 — that’d be good,” she told the reporter. “Troublemaker. I’m glad you suggested it. I’ll take it up with my caucus. Not that they haven’t been thinking about it. … Oh, yes, there’s no question. The White House is crying out for impeachment. That’s why he left yesterday.”

At a closed-door caucus meeting earlier Thursday, Pelosi ripped into Trump while repeating her warnings against impeachment.

“His actions are villainous to the constitution of the United States,” she told lawmakers, according to multiple sources. But, she added, “He wants to be impeached, so he can be exonerated by the Senate.”

Heather Caygle and Sarah Ferris contributed to this report.

Amazon is reportedly making a wearable device that can read your emotions

Amazon is at the forefront of selling speakers that listen to people’s conversations. However, this rumored development reaches a whole new level of creepy.

Bloomberg reported on Thursday that the e-commerce giant is developing a device to be worn on the wrist that would recognize its users emotional state through their voice commands. The report is based on internal documents Bloomberg acquired as well as Amazon patent filings from recent years that line up with the device’s supposed feature set.

Internally called Dylan, the wearable will supposedly work with a smartphone app to analyze your voice and figure out how you’re feeling. From there, it could do all sorts of things, such as recommend a specific meal or product. Bloomberg’s report also suggested the device could help wearers get better at interacting with others, but it’s unclear how exactly that would work.

To be clear, this thing may never see the light of day. Companies develop and scrap ideas without publicly revealing them all the time. When contacted by Mashable, Amazon declined to comment.

Still, this fits into Amazon’s larger plan to be a part of customers’ lives as much as possible. The former online bookstore now has a line of voice-activated speakers with their own privacy controversies, as well as a growing brick-and-mortar retail operation. It’s even rumored to be working on an AirPods competitor.

Emotional analysis might seem a little over-the-top for Amazon, but the company has been active when it comes facial recognition and body scanning tech.

If it does get a public release, it will be fascinating to see how it’s received by consumers. Google Glass had to be converted into an enterprise product partially because people found it creepy. Have things changed enough since 2015 for an emotion-reading wearable to succeed?

Regardless, we might be doomed if we need a watch to tell us how to talk to other people.

To help celebrate the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants, the folks behind the show created a funny short about movie etiquette starring SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward.

The short will play before G and PG rated movies at Screenivision movie theaters around the U.S. from May 24 to Aug. 29. It’s almost like a little teaser for The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge that’s slated to come to theaters in summer 2020. Ahead of that full-length movie will be the new one-hour special “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” which airs on July 12 this year.

The movie etiquette short is a fun way to remind kids (and adults) to behave during movies — did you catch which movie the folks of Bikini Bottom are seeing?

5 Seconds Of Summer Battle Cave Water And Burning Portraits In ‘Easier’ Video

YouTube/5SOS

5 Seconds of Summer are figuratively drowning. In their new video for “Easier,” their first taste of new music for what will hopefully be their fourth studio album, the quartet travels to a mysterious cavern where the lights are low, the flame is hot, and the water is rising. I hope that you like being anxious. “Easier” is dark and bleak fare that describes the helplessness one feels in ending a relationship. 5SOS are slowly sinking into the waters of despair.

“Easier” is a song about decisions. But these choices aren’t going to be around forever, they’re tapping their feet while 5SOS figure out what to do. In a toxic relationship, should you stay or leave? Work things out or call it quits and accept the loss? The quartet’s nostalgia-tinged pop-rock single kindles flames with its questions and pleading. It hurts to hear, but it’s beautiful to find euphoria in their sadness.

The song’s lack of light sucks out the brightness of any room that 5SOS enters, so for the “Easier” video, they bring candles to a cavern so small that in order to breathe, they have to take turns. There’s a lot of water here that threatens to swallow their heads whole, but they make it look sexy — low-light close-ups of wide-eyes and the band’s members slowly rising out of cave lakes like the cast of an evil version of Baywatch. 5SOS revealed to Rolling Stone that “Easier” was inspired by (and shares the “driving drum groove of”) Nine Inch Nails‘s “Closer” and some similarities can also be found in some of the shots in both videos.

5SOS are heading out with The Chainsmokers for the World War Joy tour in September. Both groups collaborated on “Who Do You Love” and released a scorching (literally) video featuring fire-soaked drums from a fierce band face-off.

Watch the claustrophobic video for “Easier” up above.

Man goes absolutely nuts when he finds out his girlfriend got the job

By Sage Anderson

Today, we’re gonna talk about BHE. Big Hype Energy.

Everyone needs a hype man in their life to gas them up during their biggest accomplishments and milestones. The position is inherently gender neutral — anyone can be a hype man, from your parents, to your best friends, and especially your significant other.

Twitter user @TreaTrea1 posted the reaction video her boyfriend sent her after telling him she got the job she interviewed for earlier that day. Mind you, he was still at work, but he found a back room to freak out and record just how hype he was for her achievement.

“You got the … you got the job?” he says emphatically. “Let’s fucking go!” he whispers intensely, as he proceeds to rip off his shirt, then his beanie, and then flex in excitement.

Twitter unanimously agreed that this is the level of love and support we all need in our lives.

He took his shirt off and his beanie didn’t move, a King

— The First Hennkage🌑 (@HennessyUchiha) May 21, 2019

But there was another piece of the puzzle to be discovered — maybe another facet of his personality that lends itself to the hype? Once Twitter learned that ah, her boyfriend is a Capricorn, well, of course. Everything made more sense.

Capricorn Chile, Leo moon I think

— Thigh.Goddess (@TreaTrea1) May 21, 2019

Capricorns unwavering support plus seriousness with a side of goofiness is unmatched, and only a very few get to experience that meal ✊🏾✊🏾

I’m a Cap with a Leo Ascendant and Libra Moon. We just get goofier as we get older. We age backwards.

— Mouse Houston (@AlchemicalMouse) May 21, 2019

No matter what your sign, we extend “all blessings 2019,” as he says, to everyone. Even if you don’t have someone who will go as hard for you as this boyfriend, remember that your No. 1 hype man should always be yourself.

Egyptian court orders the release of Mahmoud Hussein

A court in Egypt has ordered the release of Al Jazeera journalist Mahmoud Hussein from prison after 881 days of detention.

The court ruled on his release on Tuesday but following an appeal by the prosecution Hussein was brought to a different court on Thursday. It upheld the earlier decision.

However, it remained unclear exactly when the Qatar-based Egyptian producer will be freed from prison.

Az-Zahra Hussein, his daughter, said in a Facebook post her father will be released “with precautionary measures”, and will soon be transferred to a police station from prison.

Hussein has been in custody since 2016 without formal charges, a trial, or a conviction.

He was accused of “incitement against state institutions and broadcasting false news with the aim of spreading chaos”, allegations he and Al Jazeera Media Network deny.

Tahir Abu al-Nasr, a lawyer for Hussein, told Anadolu news agency the Cairo Criminal Court rejected the prosecutors’ appeal.

Hussein’s detention was in violation of both Egyptian and international law, with the former setting 24 months as the maximum period for pre-trial detention.

Egyptian authorities have repeatedly renewed his two-year detention.

He was arrested on December 20, 2016, by Egyptian authorities upon his arrival in Cairo to visit his family.

In February, the United Nations called Hussein’s jailing “arbitrary detention“, saying the “appropriate remedy would be to release Mr Hussein immediately”.

In 2013, Egypt also arrested and later imprisoned Al Jazeera’s Abdullah Elshamy, Baher Mohamed, Mohamed Fahmy and Peter Greste on charges of spreading “false news” – cases that were widely condemned by international media outlets and many politicians.

All have since been freed.

Ibrahim Helal, former editor-in-chief of Al Jazeera Arabic, was sentenced to death in absentia for purportedly endangering national security. Several other colleagues have also been charged in absentia, such as journalists Sue Turton and Dominic Kane.

Reporters Without Borders ranked Egypt 163rd out of 180 in its 2019 Press Freedom Index.

LG to add Alexa support to its 2019 ThinQ TVs

LG’s line of AI-enhanced, ThinQ television sets will get Amazon Alexa support soon, the company announced Thursday.

The new feature will roll out to customers in North America this month, with Europe and Asia getting it “in the weeks to come.”

SEE ALSO: Sprint to start selling 5G version of LG V50 very soon

Not all LG TVs will get the upgrade — only the company’s 2019 models featuring artificial intelligence (i.e. those with the ThinQ moniker). These include LG UHD TVs, NanoCell TVs and OLED TVs. The update will be implemented through the Alexa app on these models.

Note that Alexa was available on some LG TVs through the use of an external device; now, no such device will be needed.

The full list of countries that will get this feature is as follows: Austria, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom and United States.

With Alexa support, users will be able to control their smart home products, ask their TV questions and access over 90,000 Alexa Skills. LG’s ThinQ TVs already have Google Assistant support (since 2018), but it’s nice to have the Alexa option as well if you prefer Amazon’s smart assistant.

LG's ThinQ TVs now support both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

LG also announced its 2019 OLED and NanoCell TVs will receive AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support “via a mid-year update.”

LG claims its ThinQ technology allows its TVs to handle requests of greater complexity and understand “hundreds of voice commands.” The company has been heavily promoting its products AI capabilities in the past couple of years, adding the ThinQ moniker to smartphones and other products in its lineup.

The White House’s new Twitter graphic instantly becomes a meme

Another White House Twitter blast, another meme.
Another White House Twitter blast, another meme.

Image: The Washington Post/Getty Images

By Marcus Gilmer

If it’s a day that ends in “y” then the White House probably did something that’s been turned into a meme.

This time it was a late night tweet follow up to Donald Trump’s brief Rose Garden rant on Wednesday morning. Late Wednesday night, the White House Twitter account sent out the following  tweet using a special quote graphic to share a line from Trump’s ramble.

SEE ALSO: Trump’s tariffs could make your next iPhone way more expensive

While the quote itself doesn’t make sense, in or out of context, what did click with Twitter users was the opportunity presented by the new graphic: a chance to make their own Trump quote cards. And they did not disappoint.

Parker Molloy, an editor-at-large for “progressive media watchdog” Media Matters For America, even did Twitter the service of creating a blank template of the graphic for users to more easily create their own variations.

Molloy then followed up with what became probably the most popular response using this particular meme, the famous quote attributed to Trump in the Mueller Report.

So, once again, an attempt by the White House to communicate one of Trump’s lies blows up in their face and just creates a big mess. We can’t wait to see what they think up next.

Jalen Rose: Fab Five Reuniting ‘Like Voltron’ After Michigan Hires Juwan Howard

8 Mar 1992: Michigan Wolverines forward Juwan Howard, guard Jalen Rose, and forward Chris Webber (l to r) look on during a game against the Indiana Pacers.

Juwan Howard was hired as Michigan’s head men’s basketball coach to bring Final Fours and championships to the school, but he’s already brought something else—unity among his former Fab Five teammates.

ESPN’s Jalen Rose appeared on Thursday’s episode of Get Up and said that the hiring of Howard “squashes any drama or any beef” Rose has with Chris Webber. He also said the Fab Five is going to “come together like Voltron.”

Get Up @GetUpESPN

“It squashes any drama or any beef. Because we’re not going to bring that to Ann Arbor’s campus with Juwan Howard as our head coach.”

Get Up @GetUpESPN

.@JalenRose says the hiring of Juwan Howard at Michigan will bring the Fab 5 back together.

Including him and Chris Webber. https://t.co/xaIHGqEP3J

Michigan announced the hiring of Howard with a video montage featuring some of his playing days on Wednesday:

Michigan Men’s Basketball @umichbball

THIS IS MICHIGAN BASKETBALL.

#GoBlue x #WelcomeHomeJuwan 〽🏀 https://t.co/5sxcUZOYar

Rose released a book titled Give The People What They Want in 2015 that revealed he and Webber hadn’t spoken in five years and grew apart over time, as the latter didn’t participate in as many group activities or take part in a Fab Five reunion or the 30 for 30 documentary.

Charles Curtis of USA Today’s For The Win summarized a dramatic back-and-forth in 2018 in which Rose suggested Webber’s decision to be an honorary captain for a Michigan football game was to bolster his Hall of Fame candidacy by appealing to media members.

Webber fired back, saying Rose only talked about him to further a media career. Rose denied the idea he needed to talk to Webber at all to advance in his career.

Their former teammate is the one who will apparently bring them together, as Howard will attempt to establish some of the dominance the trio brought the Wolverines in the early 1990s.

The Big Ten program went to back-to-back national championship games during the Fab Five years before it was forced to forfeit wins and take down banners for NCAA sanctions.

Michigan experienced plenty of success under John Beilein—who left to become the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers—as well. It reached two of the last seven national title games, meaning Howard will be under plenty of pressure to continue winning in his first head coaching job.

He at least knows both Webber and Rose will be there to support him if Thursday’s comments were any indication.
