Dana White on Floyd Mayweather vs. Khabib Fight: ‘Don’t Pay Attention to It’

Dana White, president of the UFC, speaks at a news conference after the UFC 229 mixed martial arts event Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, in Las Vegas. A brawl broke out after the main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor when Nurmagomedov climbed over the cage and set off a scuffle with another fighter in McGregor's corner. There is no substance to rumblings of a potential boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Khabib Nurmagomedov, according to UFC President Dana White

“Don’t pay attention to it,” White told ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto on Friday. “First of all, the Mayweather team has not approached us at all. Khabib is under contract with the UFC. Floyd is very good about getting his name out there when he wants to.”

Dana White (@danawhite) says “don’t pay attention” to Nurmagomedov, Mayweather headlines. Full story on that and what’s potentially next here: https://t.co/PJt2uiMqnv https://t.co/5DTyYHbRvp

Buzz regarding a potential showdown between the two undefeated fighters has circulated ever since Nurmagomedov (27-0) defeated Conor McGregor via submission in the fourth round of their lightweight title fight at UFC 229.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Mayweather (50-0) said he’s interested in sparring with Khabib.

“I’m my own boss,” Floyd said. “So, I can’t say what’s going on on Khabib’s end. But, on my end, we can make it happen.”

Nurmagomedov’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, told Okamoto on Thursday they are willing to listen if Floyd wants to set up a second megafight with a UFC superstar:

“I’m talking to everybody right now,” Abdelaziz said. “At the end of the day, Khabib is a UFC fighter. He has a contract with the UFC, and we respect the contract. … But we’re open, if Floyd wants to box Khabib.

“You have a guy who is 50-0, a guy who is 27-0. Both have never tasted defeat. Khabib brings 2.5 billion Muslims around the world, some of the richest countries in the world, and they’re behind him. Floyd Mayweather is a megastar. Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. If the two forces clash, that’s a real fight.”

Nurmagomedov and McGregor were both suspended at least 10 days, beginning Oct. 15, stemming from their roles in a post-fight melee that erupted at UFC 229.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission will have the opportunity to extend those bans when it convenes to discuss disciplinary action Oct. 24.

Manafort in wheelchair, facing ‘significant issues’ with health

A judge also sets a Feb. 8 sentencing date for the former Trump campaign chairman.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort appeared in federal court in a wheelchair on Friday and his lawyer said he’s dealing with “significant issues” tied to his health because of his confinement at a Northern Virginia jail.

The attorney, Kevin Downing, didn’t specify what the problem was in open court but a source familiar with the situation later explained the longtime GOP operative who has been confined since mid-June is dealing with an issue related to his diet and has inflammation in his foot.

Story Continued Below

Manafort, 69, was wearing a green prison jumpsuit labeled on the back “ALEXANDRIA INMATE” and no shoe on his right foot during the proceedings. He appeared in the same ninth-floor federal courtroom where a jury in August convicted him on bank and tax fraud charges.

The hearing, called to address Manafort’s ongoing cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller tied to his subsequent guilty plea in Washington D.C., concluded with U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis setting a Feb. 8 sentencing date for Manafort.

Ellis also formally dismissed 10 counts against Manafort where the jury had failed to reach a verdict.

Manafort in September headed off a second trial in Washington by agreeing to cooperate with Mueller’s prosecutors and pleading guilty to conspiracy against the U.S. and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

As part of that agreement, Manafort has been meeting regularly with the special counsel’s team to assist with its wider investigation into whether Trump’s campaign conspired with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election.

During Friday’s hearing, Mueller prosecutor Uzo Asonye confirmed there’s no set end date for Manafort’s cooperation. Still, the special counsel’s office agreed to let Ellis start the sentencing process despite the uncertainty on when they’ll be finished with Manafort.

Ellis last week had taken issue with the “highly unusual” arrangement originally in Manafort’s plea deal, namely a plan that would have held off on dismissing the deadlocked counts in the Virginia trial until they’d gotten “successful cooperation” from the former Trump official.

Moving to avoid any trouble with Ellis, Mueller’s attorneys signaled earlier this week in a court filing that they were open to launching the sentencing process while Manafort meets with the special counsel.

“This is what I was going to do and I’m glad you agreed to it,” Ellis said on Friday. The judge added that Manafort could get credit for his cooperation even after he’s been sentenced.

Manafort’s plea deal includes a 10-year cap on how long he’ll be sent to prison from the D.C. case, which involves foreign-lobbying and money laundering charges. He’s also on track to serve his time from the Washington case concurrently with any sentence from his convictions in Virginia, although that is ultimately up to the judges involved.

Attorneys for Manafort and Mueller also have a Nov. 16 deadline to file their first joint status report on his sentencing with the D.C. judge overseeing the case.

Travis Scott Teaches Math And Drake Flies Through Space In ‘Sicko Mode’ Video

YouTube/Epic

“Sicko Mode” is simply one of the biggest songs of 2018. It might be the song of 2018 for how it captures the power of two rappers with strong gravitational pulls joining together to occupy as much space in pop culture as they possibly can. We’re talking about one dude whose entire promo campaign was based around massive golden statues of his own head, and also Drake. It doesn’t get much bigger.

Fittingly, the “Sicko Mode” video, which dropped Friday (October 19), is also huge. Directed by Travis Scott himself and Event Video go-to man Dave Meyers, the clip renders Scott’s vision of his city, Houston, in fully chaotic and stylized splendor. It’s a dream, but it’s also real life. It’s pure Astroworld.

There’s so much to unpack in this video that the best way to experience is to, well, just watch it. But look out for some choice moments, including Scott appearing briefly as what looks to be a math professor and Drake flying through space like a freaked-out cat with a flower on its head. There’s also a sly joke when Scott raps, “I might take all my exes and put ’em all in a group,” where three women then appear styled like a ’60s girl group.

What’s not in this video is any trace amount of Ricky Martin, but it probably wouldn’t have worked with the overall aesthetic anyway.

As he said on Twitter, Scott was eager and anxious for the vid to drop, hyping himself up on caffeine and not sleeping. Now that it’s out there, I hope he can relax with a nice cup of chamomile! Watch the video above, then watch Scott talking about Astroworld with MTV News ahead of his VMA performance back in August.

Marriage proposals are consistently some of life’s most picturesque moments.

On a recent trip to Yosemite National Park in California, professional photographer Matthew Dippel had the pleasure of accidentally witnessing a proposal between two strangers from afar. Naturally, he whipped out his camera and captured a visually spectacular, wildly romantic shot.

In hopes of finding the two people in the photograph, Dippel turned to Twitter for help, sharing the image and a bit of context to aid in the search.

Twitter help, idk who these two are but I hope this finds them. I took this at Taft Point at Yosemite National Park, on October 6th, 2018. pic.twitter.com/Rdzy0QqFbY

‘Halloween’ post-credits plot twist: What it is and why it sucks

Warning: major spoilers for the new Halloween lie ahead.

If you love something… Let. It. Go

In the middle of an already exciting month for horror fans, this weekend heralds the release of the latest Halloween sequel. A fresh take on the beloved franchise, the new Michael Myers chapter is presently holding an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been excitedly praised by many film critics, including Mashable’s own Angie Han.

SEE ALSO: James Corden turned ‘Halloween’ into a ridiculous true crime documentary

As a fervent lover of the entire slasher saga—shout out to the Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks days—I naturally want to throw my own two cents in on the sequel assessment.

And while I cannot say enough about how much I really, really loved this movie, one small audio edit at the end of the credits has me more than a little angry.

No, I’m not nitpicking an acoustic faux pas. (The audio engineering throughout is masterful.) I’m talking about the literally last-minute post-credits audio clip that undercuts every moment of the film’s preceding 100 minutes of glory.

If you didn’t catch what I’m talking about, here’s a recap

Following an epic fight to the finish against Michael, three generations of Strode women (Laurie, Laurie’s daughter, and Laurie’s daughter’s daughter) climb into the back of a pickup truck and drive into the night, finally free of their terror. Michael has been captured in Laurie’s kickass bunker/basement and climactically burned alive. It is a rare moment of triumph in both this franchise and in the horror genre at large.

And yet, when the credits wrap up, the closing music cuts out and the dark screen is met with distinct, muffled breathing. It is a clear sign that behind that infamous mask, Michael Myers lives on.

The film never shows Myers’ dead body and upon first viewing that makes total sense, even in a world where the Strodes win. (The film is tactfully gory and a charred corpse isn’t really necessary to the finale pacing.) But this auditory Easter egg is clearly the creators’ wink-wink-nudge-nudge attempt at opening the door to a sequel—and that could not be a bigger mistake.

We’ve been down this path before – with discouraging results

What makes this rendition of Halloween so marvelous isn’t the throwback scares or the persistent threat of a deranged killer. 2018’s Halloween is fantastic because it constantly uses its own history to subvert audience expectation.

Turning trope after trope on its head, this reimagining of a 1970s classic puts the victims in the driver’s seat and the killer on blast. It is a grand exit that champions the final girl in all the right ways and manages a surprising reprieve for the rocky franchise’s mixed past.

Compared to the rest of the outstanding story, this been-there-done-that “the killer is still out there!” cliffhanger feels starkly predictable.

That being said, I am not oblivious as to why yet another Halloween follow-up is desirable. Plenty of fans, myself included, left theaters wanting more. Not to mention, any financially successful movie seemingly compels studio execs to trick it out for another payday.

This auditory Easter egg is the creators’ attempt at opening the door to a sequel—and that could not be a bigger mistake.

While all of that may seem tempting—I, too, want Jamie Lee Curtis to have so much money she can afford to dive into a pool of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck—Halloween, of all franchises, knows what a dangerous road this is to go down.

Each of the nine preceding sequels to 2018’s Halloween managed to more than make back their respective budgets at the box office. However, plenty of these revisits were also met with searing criticism from professional and amateur reviewers alike.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch was called “one of the worst films in history.” In a particularly scathing 2002 review, Halloween: Resurrection was dismissed as “flat, unfunny and less frightening than a Vanilla Ice comeback album.” And, in a burn that says, “I care so little about you I’m not even upping my word count,” one critic summed up his Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers experience by commenting, “The less said about this sixth entry in the Halloween series, the better.” Ouch.

If David Gordon Green can force himself and his Halloween creative team to take a walk down memory lane, a litany of horrific reviews will remind them that no amount of audience demand can make up for horrendous quality.

And, if that doesn’t do it, then I am asking personally: Mr. Green, you made a phenomenal movie. Please, please leave it alone.

All in all, this post-credits addition adds a small stain to an otherwise perfect film. So, what’s my recommendation?

When the credits start to roll at your viewing this weekend, get out of that theater as fast as you can. Linger too long and I promise a decades-old cinema killer will be back for one last scare.

Trump rebuked for praising Republican who body-slammed reporter

Journalists and others are calling for US President Donald Trump to apologise after he praised a Republican congressman for body-slamming a reporter last year.

“To celebrate an attack on a journalist who was simply doing his job is an attack on the first amendment by someone who has taken an oath to defend it,” said John Mulholland, editor of the Guardian US, whose political correspondent, Ben Jacobs, was assaulted in May 2017 as he tried to ask Congressman Greg Gianforte a question about healthcare.

During a Montana campaign rally on Thursday, Trump praised Gianforte, saying: “Any guy that can do a body slam – he’s my kind of guy.”

The crowd laughed and cheered as Trump went on, saying “he’s a great guy, tough cookie”.

After the 2017 encounter, Gianforte initially misled investigators about what had happened, falsely claiming that Jacobs had grabbed him by the wrist and pulled both of them to the floor, according to documents released under a court order following requests from news agencies.

The president said he was in Rome with other world leaders when he heard about what had happened.

“And I said, oh, this is terrible. He’s going to lose the election,” Trump recalled. “And then I said, well, wait a minute. I know Montana pretty well. I think it might help him. And it did.”

Last night, President Trump praised a GOP Congress member for body slamming a reporter in May 2017.

— AJ+ (@ajplus) October 19, 2018

Gianforte, who is up for re-election in November, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge in June 2017 and said in an apology letter that he alone was responsible for the attack. He paid a $385 fine and completed 40 hours of community service and 20 hours of anger management counseling. He also donated $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

‘Run the risks of inviting other assaults’

Trump referenced Gianforte again later during Thursday’s rally when discussing former Vice President Joe Biden, who once said he would “beat the hell out of” Trump if they were in high school.

On Biden challenging him to a fight, Trump said, “He’d be down, faster than Greg would take him down.”

Trump’s comments come amid international furor over the apparent assassination of Saudi writer and critic Jamal Khashoggi who disppeared at the beginning of October after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage. He has not been seen since.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump said it “certainly looks” as though Khashoggi is dead, adding that if reports are true that the Saudis killed him, the consequences “will have to be very severe”.

Trump has also denied covering for Saudi Arabia over the suspected murder. “I am not giving cover at all,” he said on Wednesday.

The Guardian’s Mulholland said “in the aftermath of the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, [Trump’s remarks at the campaign rally] run the risk of inviting other assaults on journalists both here and across the world where they often face far greater threats”.

He added: “We hope decent people will denounce these comments and tht the president will see fit to apologise for them.”

‘Shocking and chilling’

Other journalists, editors and rights groups also rebuked Trump for praising Gianforte Thursday night.

“This shocking and chilling, especially in light of the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi,” tweeted Guardian editor-in-chief Katharine Viner.

— Katharine Viner (@KathViner) October 19, 2018

“If you think the press is the enemy of the American people, why wouldn’t you praise people who beat up journalists,” tweeted Guardian writer Jason Wilson. “Don’t expect him to say anything useful if journalists start getting beaten up in at street protests etc,” he added.

PEN America, a literary and rights organisation, launched a lawsuit against the president on Tuesday, accusing him of violating the First Amendment and his oath to uphold the Constitution through “official acts”.

Responding to Trump’s remarks on Thursday night, PEN America CEO Suzanne Nossel said in a statement the president’s comment “marks a startling new low in terms of the White House’s open hostility toward the press”.

Nossel added: “During a week when the world is riveted in horror at the brutal murder of a journalist by the Saudi government, Trump’s remarks are a chilling reminder that US global leadership on press freedom has collapsed utterly under the president’s watch.”

We have filed suit challenging the President’s threats and retaliatory actions toward the press to affirm the role of First Amendment and demand that our government treat journalists with the protections they deserve, and that our democracy depends upon. https://t.co/q5nJXdd8vu

— PEN America (@PENamerican) October 19, 2018

Olivier Knox, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, said in a statement that “all Americans should recoil from the president’s praise for a violent assault on a reporter doing his Constitutionally protected job”.

Knox added: “We should never shrug at the president cheerleading for a violent act targeting a free and independent news media.”

YouTube now lets you subscribe to a channel from an embedded video

YouTube keeps the updates rolling in.

YouTube launched a new update to its website two days ago allowing users to browse while watching a video at the same time. Now, the video platform is quietly rolling out another major update to the offsite YouTube experience.

The video giant is finally giving its embedded player a major overhaul — making it easier for people to subscribe to channels from embedded videos.

Now, when you come across a YouTube video embedded on a website, you will see the channel’s avatar on the top left corner, next to the title of the video on the thumbnail image. Hovering over the channel image reveals the channel’s name, subscriber count, as well as a new actionable “subscribe” button. You can also click on the channel image to open its YouTube channel page in a new window. These changes were first pointed out by 9to5Google.

Mashable has confirmed that this new feature began quietly rolling out across YouTube video embeds two weeks ago. The update was designed to provide more context about the video being watched.

YouTube videos embedded on a third-party’s website had long been void of any additional information. You may not have even realized it, but shockingly before this update, video embeds simply displayed the video’s title without any information about the channel or creator who uploaded it.

On its surface, this update may seem like a small change, but in action, it makes it much easier for channel creators and YouTube personalities to grow their subscriber base.

All viewers have to do is hover over the channel avatar, and as long as they’re logged into their YouTube account, they can click the “subscribe” button from the pop-up menu that appears. The viewer would then be subscribed to the video uploader’s channel without ever having to even leave the website or post where the video is embedded on. So, next time you see a YouTube video embedded on one of your favorite websites, do the uploader a favor, and smash that subscribe button.

In all seriousness though, would you wear these nose warmers?

It’s that time of the year again when we force ourselves to dig out our coats, scarves, hats … and nose warmers?

This ridiculous winter accessory by the Nose Warmer Company is essentially a knitted pouch made specifically to keep your nose nice and toasty. Surprisingly, this company also isn’t the only one to create this kind of product either. Aunty Marty, an Etsy store that makes animal-themed nose warmers, has also been a part of this trend since 2008.

<img class="" data-credit-name="Nose Warmer Comapny” data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-fragment=”m!6b10″ data-image=”https://ift.tt/2P9W810; data-micro=”1″ src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/Sp2sMut7RD65hMytr9H7S1fXMPk=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F867165%2F91c56999-55b1-4f02-a526-d1c20a486c6c.jpg”>

SEE ALSO: This stylish hat doubles as a bike helmet

The Nose Warmer Company has recently been in the social media spotlight due to it’s very odd-looking designs and utility. During an interview with BuzzFeed, Sally Steel-Jones, the owner of the company, defended the controversial warmer.

“It looks a bit silly, you say? So do Christmas jumpers and bobble hats, but plenty of people wear those,” Steel-Jones said. “With enough cold-nosed people out there to create a demand for the warmers, one day it might be you looking silly walking around with your red, bare nose!”

To be fair, having a cold nose is something I personally deal with every time I leave the safety and warmth of my apartment during the winter. But, to what lengths would I go to protect my frosty nose? I can’t say.

But, would you wear this?

<img alt="" class="" data-caption="" data-credit-name="Nose Warmer Company
” data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-fragment=”m!4a91″ data-image=”https://ift.tt/2PK47PA; data-micro=”1″ src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/x0DYSPtHSsVHsFvUasD3t5qzupI=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F867162%2Fcdde6124-805b-4938-ae47-f31ad8200681.jpg” title=””>

Image: Nose Warmer Company

At the very least, you can personalize the pouch’s color or patter to suit your taste. There are also a variety of different materials such as fleece, wool, and faux fur that can be selected to allow your nose to be snuggled up in a fuzzy environment of your preference.

But if you’re not a fan of things on your face, that’s also understandable. No amount of intricate crocheting can remove the feeling of wearing a surgical mask.

It can be argued though that wrapping a scarf halfway around your face — which I’ve personally done many times — is the same thing. Granted, scarves are little more acceptable at this point in history.

But muffs for your nose? Maybe we need a little more time to warm up to the idea.

We just might not be ready for this next step in winter fashion, but you can’t dismiss its utility. It serves a pretty unique purpose, but it really does look silly.

At the end of the day, you only got one nose. Treat it kindly.

If you’re into actually buying one of these things, they’re available on NoseWarmer.com and Etsy for about $15 depending on style and material.
