Diverse options to help build an inclusive toy box

Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with.

Now more than ever, it’s particularly evident that children need to be exposed to diversity as young as possible. It’s a topic that can inspire hesitation among a lot of parents, but setting the foundation for inclusivity isn’t as hard as you might think. Interactive play with diverse toys can be a great method to accomplish this.

Diversity – which is often used in tandem with inclusion – in this context refers to having access to toys that represent individuals of a range of races/ethnicities, ability statuses, and genders. There are other aspects of diversity that are more challenging to represent without backstories. For those, books are a wonderful way to introduce aspects of diversity like sexual orientation, financial class, language, neurodiversity, and mental health.

According to psychologist Dr. Amber A. Hewitt, a specialist in gendered racial socialization, being exposed to diversity via toys has great benefits for identity development.

“An inclusive toy box can promote positive racial/ethnic, gender, and cultural identity development for children. It’s important for children to see themselves reflected in their toys,” Hewitt explains. She explains how a lack of representation in one’s toy box can send harmful messages ranging from “people who look like me don’t matter” to concerns if there are others who look like them.

In this way, diverse toys can promote inclusion by literally making members of marginalized groups more visible in a child’s daily life, as well as giving children more models that reflect themselves.

“All of the messages can impact a child’s sense of self-worth and can perpetuate stereotypes. It’s important to remember that not all of the messages that children receive are verbal. And children learn, including learning messages about identity, through play,” Hewitt says.

It’s hard to think about the subliminal impressions children pick up through toys without thinking of the “Doll Test” of the 1940s. The experiment revealed that all children, including Black children, showed signs of white bias, and the results have been mostly consistent through the years.

Hewitt also believes it’s essential that we don’t send gendered messages to children during play. “I encourage caregivers and educators to avoid language based on gender stereotypes which perpetuate assumptions about the types of toys boys and girls “should” play with,” she concludes.

It’s important for children to see themselves reflected in their toys

An inclusive range of toys is vital for children of all stages and demographic backgrounds. Not only for reflections of themselves but also as a means of seeing the diversity of the world. The following items set an excellent foundation for an inclusive toy box.

Lammily Doll

By now, you’ve likely heard of Barbie’s new STEM-related dolls, as well as the role model collection that’s inspired by many of our favorite IRL heroes including, Chloe Kim, Katherine Johnson, and Ibtihaj Muhammad.

But if Barbie is just a bit too problematic for your taste, you have another option: The Lammily Doll. The female Lammily doll hit the scene in 2014, and a male version was released in 2016. Based on the body of the “average” 19-year old American, Lammily brings a realistic image to pretend play. The company even sells reusable stickers and kits to simulate real-life milestones like pimples, bruises, and menstruation. Plus they’re produced by a small family-owned company.

Wonder Crew

As Dr. Hewitt said above, it’s essential we don’t limit children to the narrow classifications of gender-based toys, as those limitations can enforce unwanted gender stereotypes. Unfortunately, children pick up on messages – such as “Boys shouldn’t play with dolls” – early. Teaching boys, in particular, to feel and express their emotions has benefits throughout their lives.

The Wonder Crew is a novel set of dolls made with boys in mind. A recent Doll Of The Year winner, Wonder Crew encourages friendship, caretaking skills, and freedom of expression to young boys. According to its creator, the five-option doll set was created to motivate and remind young boys that they can go anywhere and be anything.

The Friends with Diverse Abilities set brings inclusivity into a dollhouse.

Marvel Education MTC-164 Friends with Diverse Abilities Figure Set

You may not always know the best way to talk your child about people who are differently abled. Thankfully, the Friends With Diverse Abilities Figure Set by Marvel Education provides an interactive doorway to the conversation.

These action-style figures were created for children from kindergarten to third grade, but they have to potential to spark meaningful conversation for folks of any age. Most of the examples are of physical disabilities, including limited mobility, low vision, and deafness. The set also provides examples of gender, racial, and age diversity.

If you want to spread the joy, gift them to your child’s daycare or preschool

Barefoot Books Children of the World Memory Game

Children of the World Memory Game was inspired by the classic song “If you’re happy and you know it” and it also exposes 4-to-7-year-olds, and anyone else who plays it, to cultural diversity. The objective of this game is to match boy/girl pairs with information regarding their traditional attire, country name, and background colors.

This game is fantastic because it provides an age-appropriate introduction to cultural differences that preschool and early elementary school age children may not encounter otherwise.

Gifts with their own histories

I’m sure all of us a can remember a time a loved one visited a faraway place and brought back a souvenir. That personal gift connected us to their travel and sometimes created a long-term desire to see the place for ourselves.

These artifacts aren’t limited to geographic destinations. They can also be from places that highlight critical cultural movements like museums or monuments. Posters, books, and key chains all have the potential for long-term impact when given with love and a detailed backstory.

However, it’s vital that parents and gift-givers provide cultural context to gifts that relate to specific groups and time periods. If you’re concerned that a gift might be culturally appropriative or otherwise problematic, keep the following guidelines in mind.

 1. Always include a fact-based description or book that explains the gift within the necessary cultural context in language the child can understand.

 2. Prioritize buying items that are explained and sold by members of the group.

 3. Teach the child that possession of the item does not qualify them to speak on the culture, specifically over members who belong to that culture.

 4. Historical gifts related to the child’s own lineage or cultural identity can deepen a sense of appreciation and connection.

Childhood is a time for play, exploration, and fun, but the toys we use to support this can have lasting effects beyond just a pleasant afternoon.

Newest security worry: Trump without Mattis

James Mattis and Donald Trump

The Pentagon chief’s widely expected departure is fueling anxiety among officials of both parties who have viewed him as a force for stability.

National security leaders fear that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is on his way out — and that Donald Trump’s next Pentagon chief will be far more subservient to the president’s unilateral and bombastic whims.

Mattis was instrumental in pulling back on Trump’s vow to “carpet bomb” ISIS or pull troops from Afghanistan. He moderated the U.S. military response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons and openly opposed Trump’s withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal.

Story Continued Below

Now Trump’s reverence for the retired four-star general has worn thin, and Mattis is widely expected to depart his post sometime after the November elections, according to multiple Pentagon and administration officials with knowledge of personnel discussions. And that’s fueling anxiety among officials of both parties who have viewed him for almost two years as a force for stability.

“Secretary Mattis is one of the only reassuring figures in the Trump administration, and I don’t mean that as a Democratic partisan,” said Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), a member of the Appropriations Committee’s defense panel. “I mean when our partners and our adversaries think about the United States and the Department of Defense, knowing that Secretary Mattis is there strengthens our hand.”

Current and former government officials say they worry about a repeat of what happened when Trump replaced former National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster with leading hawk John Bolton, and then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with conservative stalwart Mike Pompeo.

“Replacements might not be as good, just like Bolton was a real trade down from McMaster,” predicted Sen. Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat on the Armed Services Committee.

Mattis’ departure from Trump’s inner circle would also come at a time when much of the top military leadership, including Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford, are also preparing to retire. Mattis’ successor would have major influence on the complexion of the new military command structure that Trump would nominate next year.

“If he leaves, you inject a whole issue of uncertainty,” Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Armed Services panel, told reporters earlier this week. “Who’s going to succeed him?”

For Kaine, the uncertainty goes well beyond just Mattis, whose overwhelming Senate confirmation includes yes votes from members who opposed virtually all other Trump nominees.

“Secretary Mattis and Gen. Dunford are the real pillars of protecting American national security right now,” he said. “Either of them going, I think, would be extremely damaging to American defense and the credibility of our national security team.”

That view rests on Mattis’ reputation for a steady hand and a steady voice in the inner circle.

Mattis is widely viewed as a force for continuity from the Obama administration on some of the biggest national security issues, including Iran policy and the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

On Afghanistan and the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, Mattis successfully championed strategies that broadly echoed the Obama administrations approaches to the campaigns — and rejected Trump’s own impulses toward more drastic changes.

Rather than authorizing the “carpet bombing” against ISIS that Trump talked about during his campaign, or encouraging the president’s desire to pull out of Afghanistan, Mattis largely maintained the strategies the military was already pursuing in both theaters, with some tweaks such as giving field commanders more authority for air strikes.

Mattis has also made public remarks that seem calculated to shut the door to policy options that reportedly intrigued the president — such as privatizing the combat advisory effort in Afghanistan, a proposal pushed by Blackwater founder Erik Prince.

Mattis’ more subtle approach has also been successful in the U.S. response to the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons against civilians.

When Mattis and Dunford briefed Trump on Central Command’s five potential military options for punishing Syria, Mattis characterized the most restrained option — limited strikes against three targets — as more muscular than it really was, according to a military official involved in the deliberations who described them on condition of anonymity.

“He presented the lightest option as a heavy option,” the official recalled. And Trump signed off on it.

On Iran policy, Mattis has clashed more openly with the president, unsuccessfully opposing his decision to pull out of the pact negotiated by the Obama administration to try to curtail Tehran’s nuclear weapons program.

That independence has steadily frayed the relationship between Mattis and the commander-in-chief.

In an interview with The Associated Press earlier this week, Trump called his defense chief “sort of a Democrat.” That slap came on the heels of journalist Bob Woodward’s book “Fear,” which quoted Mattis as disparaging the president.

Mattis, who was traveling in Asia when Trump made the comment, told reporters: “I’ve never registered for any political party.”

“I’m on his team,” Mattis added of Trump. “We have never talked about me leaving.”

He also told the reporters that Trump had called to tell him, “I’m 100 percent with you.”

But many close observers believe the writing is on the wall about Mattis’ fate — especially if the growing friction continues to play out publicly as it had with Tillerson.

“POTUS is getting rid of him after midterms,” said the same military official, who agreed to discuss knowledge of internal White House deliberations on the condition he not be identified by name. “It’s something they’ve wanted to do for a while. They weren’t going to do it before midterms.”

“Mattis has executed his own foreign policy,” the official added. “He was able to get away with it by partnering with Tillerson and making McMaster irrelevant. Now with Pompeo and Bolton in, the jig is up.”

Loren Thompson, a defense industry consultant with close ties to the Pentagon leadership, put it this way: “What it comes down to is that Trump and Mattis don’t see eye to eye. Trump is a change agent and Mattis is largely a product of the existing viewpoint, the status quo.

“He stopped doing those dinners with the president,” he added. “I think they have drifted apart and they probably aren’t on the same sheet of music in terms of priorities anymore. “

For many, that is exactly why they worry about what follows.

Keeping Mattis is a matter of stability, Reed believes. He said he worries that a new civilian leader will have to get up to speed even as a raft of top generals and admirals begins to retire en masse.

In addition to Dunford, whose term is up in September 2019, several members of the Joint Chiefs, including Air Force Gen. Paul Selva, the vice chairman, are expected to retire next year.

Several top commanders responsible for various regions of the world or other global missions are also likely to be selected in the coming months. For example, Army Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, the top commander in Europe, is retiring.

“If he is gone and there is another secretary of Defense, you’re going to see next year … everybody new around the water cooler trying to figure out where the bathroom is,” Reed told reporters. “That’s not going to be good for national defense.”

Others say the bipartisan support that Mattis has enjoyed on Capitol Hill could be difficult to replicate.

“It would be hard to imagine that person having quite the same rapport,” said Michael O’Hanlon, a military and foreign policy specialist at the nonpartisan Brookings Institution. “It’s almost inevitable that the next person would have less of a bond with Democrats, but it could be much worse than that. It could be almost a poisonous relationship.”

Not everyone is convinced that Mattis is on his way out, including O’Hanlon, who said he believes the Defense secretary still offers Trump some political benefits.

Another senior administration official said he believes it would still be difficult for Trump to terminate someone with Mattis’ reputation without justification — though he might try to push the secretary out bit by bit by criticizing him.

“If he can’t tell you to find the exit, he’ll make you want to find the exit,” said the official, who was not authored to speak publicly about internal deliberations. “This may be one of those cases where it’s not worth the daily knife fight.”

Others believe Mattis won’t leave unless he’s fired — as one retired senior military officer and longtime friend of Mattis predicted.

“I would be very surprised if he leaves without being told to leave,” he said, speaking on the condition he not be named. “His whole view is, leave the politics to the side and forge ahead.”

Those who see Mattis is a bulwark against more extreme policies — particularly Democratic lawmakers — say they hope Mattis does stick around.

“It is alarming to think that his tenure would come to an end,” Schatz said. “I think it’s in the president’s interest to keep him. I think it’s in the country’s interest to keep him. And I think it’s in the interest of peace and stability to keep him. Which probably means he won’t keep him.”

A portrait of Othello as a black Muslim tragic hero

London, England – A new adaptation of Othello in the UK subtly interrogates the tragic hero’s religious identity, presenting to audiences the possibility that the Moor of Venice was a closeted, practising Muslim.

Produced by the English Touring Theatre, there is an Arabic recitation in the opening scene and an image of Othello with his hands cupped in what is unmistakably a Muslim prayer.

Highlights

 • Othello was written around 1604

 • The central themes are jealousy and power

 • Othello is a black convert to Christianity and general of the Venetian army

 • In the play, Iago manipulates Othello into believing his wife, Desdemona, is unfaithful

 • Othello is convinced and kills his wife

 • After realising Desdemona’s innocence, Othello kills himself

“I was very aware of the racism Othello suffers because of his skin colour, but there was a much more insidious and layered thing that was happening to him as an outsider,” director Richard Twyman told Al Jazeera.

“The biggest thing is within the language, where Othello is constantly called the Moor. We know historically about the Moorish kingdom of Spain (where Spanish Muslims or Moriscos’ were forcibly converted to Christianity in 1492). But I never put it together that Moor might also be referring to Othello’s spiritual and cultural identity,” he said.

It was not until Twyman encountered the research of Jerry Brotton, professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London and author of This Orient Isle: Elizabethan England and the Islamic World, that it became plausible Islam was intrinsic to Othello’s identity.

Brotton told Al Jazeera: “A Moor is an inhabitant of Mauritania which is in northwest Africa. It’s effectively modern-day Morocco.

“In this period in the 15th and 16th century, Muslims were referred to as black. There was no word for Muslim. It didn’t enter the English language until the second decade of the 17th century. But you have all these synonyms – Turk, Moor, Saracen, Persian, which are an attempt by an English tradition to describe Muslims.”

In addition to the opening prayer scene, in which Othello unfurls a prayer mat for him and Desdemona to sit on during their marriage ceremony, the play makes other references to his spirituality.

In the first line, Othello recites in Arabic the foundational invocation for Muslims: “In the name of God, the most gracious the most merciful.”

He also moves from one religion to another.

A crucifix hangs from his neck throughout the play, but when he is told of his wife’s alleged infidelity, he raises his prayer beads and shouts in Arabic, “Ya Akbar”, “Oh, Great One”.

‘Islam was not the enemy’

Viewed in the historical context in which it was written, Othello offers a glimpse into the economic and political anti-Catholic alliance between Elizabethan England and the Muslim world.

“Spanish Catholicism for Protestant Elizabethan England was the absolute enemy,” Brotton said.

“Islam was not the enemy, and so to ally with Islamic imperial power and northwest African Islamic commercial, military, and naval power, was seen as highly appropriate.”

As well as sparking a three-decade correspondence between Elizabeth I and Sultan Murad III, this Anglo-Islamic alliance found its way onto the Elizabethan stage.

All those notions of the fear of cosmopolitanism, of people who cross cultures, languages and boundaries, this is the language that has fuelled so much of right-wing discourse of UKIP and Brexit.

Jerry Brotton, professor of Renaissance Studies

From 1579 to 1624, 62 plays with Muslim characters, themes or settings were performed, though Shakespeare’s earlier Muslim characters lacked the complexity of Othello.

In Titus Andronicus, Aaron, a “blackamoor”, is described as having a soul “black like his face”.

The Prince of Morocco, who sought to marry Portia in The Merchant of Venice, was said to have the “complexion of a devil”.

Othello emerged in contrast as the most nuanced attempt at a Muslim character.

As Anglo-Islamic relations blossomed, the arrival in 1600 of Muhammad Al-Annuri, the Moroccan ambassador to Elizabethan London, is said to have been Shakespeare’s inspiration for Othello.

Wearing a flowing black robe and white turban, his portrait was painted to commemorate a military alliance between England and Morocco which never came to fruition. It is now the earliest surviving picture of a Muslim painted from life in England.

Contemporary relevance

Othello is an exceptional, loyal and erudite character, but positive associations are attempted to be dashed when Senator Brabantio is informed of his daughter Desdemona’s relationship with the black Venetian general – “an old black ram / Is tupping your white ewe.”

He is also described as a man “of here and everywhere” who travelled from Cyprus to Aleppo.

“All those notions of the fear of cosmopolitanism, of people who cross cultures, languages and boundaries, this is the language that has fuelled so much of right-wing discourse of [far-right UK Independence Party (UKIP)] and Brexit,” said Brotton.

For Twyman, Othello was prescient.

“This play is a really sobering, shocking, really quite stark warning about what happens when we ‘otherise’ people, about giving into the Iago within us or the Iago in our society,” he said.

Victor Oshin, the actor who portrays Othello in the production, said the character’s experience resonated with his own.

Growing up as a young black man in Dagenham, East London, he said he had to downplay his identity to avoid being stereotyped.

“That cautiousness, to always have to be soft, to always have to be on the back-foot, to not have to intimidate has definitely informed my portrayal of Othello,” he said.

“You lose certain parts of yourself when you have to assimilate. At the end of the play, Othello questions what he has become, what he has lost. It’s funny to see it being done 400 years ago when even now, even in myself, there are times when I say to myself, ‘Is this my true voice?’”

How ‘Halloween’ uses side-splitting humor to give its victims a pulse

Warning: Major spoilers for the new Halloween lie ahead.

“I’ve got peanut butter on my penis.”

That’s an actual line from the new Halloween—and it is as amazing in context as it is out of context.

The latest addition to the Halloween franchise has been praised for revitalizing the horror of Michael Myers, cleverly throwing back to John Carpenter’s original masterpiece, and giving the franchise’s most infamous victim the conclusion she deserves

One of the lesser discussed assets of 2018’s Halloween (although Mashable’s Angie Han nailed it weeks ago) is the uproariously funny gaggle of prey Michael slays before his final face-off with Laurie Strode. The slasher victims’ deaths aren’t particularly chuckle-worthy, but the short vignettes they star in leading up to Myers’ horrifying appearances are memorably hilarious.

SEE ALSO: The best gifts for your horror movie loving friend

From a yo-yo-loving dad to the most endearing babysitter and kid pairing ever, each victim of Halloween brings personality and depth to the 40-year-old backdrop of Haddonfield, Illinois in a way that makes the story not only more sympathetic, but also vastly more compelling.

Filling horror films with hauntingly hysterical victims isn’t exactly a novel approach to the genre. Shaun of the Dead and The Cabin in the Woods are just two of many movies that have done it well. But Halloween‘s comical casualties are so timely and endearing that we can’t help but honor this particular take on the trope.

In memory of those lost to the 11th bout of Myers killings, here is a look back at some of the most memorable victims of 2018’s Halloween. (Excluding the Strode women—they deserve a retrospective that is all their own.)

The investigative journalists who basically just have a podcast

Number one: I love a good podcast drag.

Number two: The dynamic of these two “investigative journalists” is so Sarah Koenig meets Piers Morgan, it had me gasping for air between laughs.

You shouldn’t taunt a notorious serial killer—even if it’s for your podcast.

The true crime world is a pretty easy one to mock—if only because it can be so melodramatic and self-important. (Notably, it isn’t always that way. Shout out to My Favorite Murder.) The characters of Dana Haines and Aaron Korey embody this reality in all the right ways.

First, Aaron assumes shouting at Michael Myers, an infamously mute villain, will finally get him to talk. (Subtle.) Then, in an obvious breach of journalistic ethics, Dana pays Laurie, a victim of a horrifying crime, $3,000 for a bad interview she does not want to participate in.

Finally, the two get slaughtered in a gas station bathroom because they couldn’t quite figure out that you shouldn’t taunt a notorious serial killer. Even if it’s for your podcast.

The tiny dancer and his dad who just want quality bonding time

This scene wasn’t particularly funny, but it was quirky, charming, and unquestionably the sweetest part of the film.

Driving along a backroad in Haddonfield, an unnamed father and son are headed back from a long day of hunting. But they’re not discussing deer or rifles. Instead, they focus on the topics of time management and a passion for dance.

The young boy explains that his devotion to dance class and becoming a better performer may mean that he has less time to go hunting with his father. The dad seemingly understands the predicament, but is sad to see his son’s time becoming divided. The boy lovingly assures him that they can still go hunting “on weekends.”

It is a precious exchange that turns horribly heartbreaking when they drive up on the scene of a bus crash—one that resulted in the escape of Michael Myers. It’s a short vignette, but will stick with those who have a love of family and a soft spot for kids’ dreams.

The babysitter and her hilarious favorite

Image: ryan green / universal pictures

Who knew the murder of a teenage girl could be packed with so many chuckles?

This horrifying sequence begins with a stunning string of zingers between Vicky, a laid-back babysitter, and Julian, her favorite ward. The two talk marijuana and browser history in an exchange that can only be described as mutual blackmail. Vicky ultimately quips that Julian is now one of her least favorite kids to babysit for.

While that insult could be seen as mean-spirited when directed at such a young kid, it turns unbelievably sweet when Vicky assures Julian that he is in fact her favorite. She wishes him goodnight and he drifts off to sleep.

Then, Michael Myers shows up.

Vicky is brutally murdered, but Julian manages an escape. Sadly, that means we’ll never get the incredible buddy comedy spinoff these two could have nailed. At least we enjoyed it while it lasted.

SEE ALSO: Let’s talk about that last-minute twist in the end credits of ‘Halloween’

The babysitter’s boyfriend (who looks a lot like Cole Sprouse?)

Okay, we shouldn’t be sad only because this kid reminded us a lot of Riverdale‘s Jughead, played by Cole Sprouse. But it’s totally okay for it to add to our grief.

Vicky’s boyfriend, Dave, is present at the time of her killing. Prior to Michael’s arrival, he flirts with Vicky, alludes to a tattoo he got to honor Halloween, and, while dressed as a farmer, names his adorable toy horse. Overall, he seems like a bit of an asshole, but the kind you’d date for a while. (He’s especially dateable considering the actor who plays him, Miles Robbins, is the son of Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. Who doesn’t want to be in that family?)

Ultimately, Dave tries to take on Michael Myers in a battle of the butcher knives and loses big. In an homage to the original 1978 take, Dave is tacked to the wall via knife to the head. His tattoo is revealed to read “10-31-18.”

RIP Dave and his silly tattoo.

The most considerate buddy cops of all time

Image: ryan green / universal pictures

I like my coworkers a lot. (Hello to the editor reading this piece!) However, it would take a pretty special circumstance for me to bring them a customized lunch unasked.

Officer Richards and Officer Francis are your typical squad car duo. The two sit side by side guarding the Strode house and aimlessly passing the time like old pals. In a delightful bit of banter, Richards reveals that he has had a novel “peanut butter and jelly banh mi” sandwich made for his picky eater of a partner. Francis refuses the offer saying he brought a brownie for lunch. It is adorable and still gives me the giggles.

Unfortunately, Richards is later found with a scalpel-like blade jutting out of his head and Francis’s severed cranium is gutted and carved like a pumpkin. (That second part, by the way, seems like it would have taken more time and skill than Michael had at his disposal? Not sure how to do that fact-check though…)

Our crime-fighting buddies biting the big one is pretty unfortunate. But maybe it’ll make you nicer to the people you work with?

Allyson’s yo-yo-loving dad, Ray

Any man who can say, “I got peanut butter on my penis” with a straight face is a man worth saving.

The men of the Strode family don’t play a big role in this heroine-centric drama. But Ray, Karen’s husband and Allyson’s dad, does make a few shining appearances.

No amount of peanut butter on your penis can save you from certain death.

First introduced saying the aforementioned peanut butter line (he drops peanut butter on his pants and chooses to phrase it this way, motive unknown), Ray tags along as Karen’s plus one through the film’s sinister developments, occasionally tossing in a bizarre quip. When Ray joins Karen at her mother’s bunker where they are set to hide out from Michael, he cheerfully hangs out in the background and at one point does tricks with a yo-yo.

But then he decides to offer coffee to the police officers stationed outside the house and things go… south. Michael quickly strangles Ray and leaves him dead on the lawn, heralding the beginning of the film’s finale standoff.

Ray’s story arc highlights two major things. First, too many people don’t take Laurie seriously enough until it’s too late. Second, no amount of peanut butter on your penis can save you from certain death.

Should you join Halloween‘s victims?

Lots of horror movies can make you laugh unintentionally. (Night of the Lepus comes to mind.) But the writers of Halloween knew exactly what they were doing when they packed their fright fest with comedy.

In an interview with Vulture, cowriter Danny McBride was asked about how the new take modernized the Strode heroines. McBride’s response aptly emphasized the ways in which ensemble comedy can enhance stories of any genre.

“… In a horror movie it makes the stakes way better, because you’re seeing someone that you identify with or you admire or you like or there’s something about them that makes you root for them,” he said. “It’s just finding an angle on these characters that’s going to make the audience identify with them and want them to get through the night alive.”

With this generous application of comedy in mind, horror-averse moviegoers should still consider seeing Halloween. Even if you’re not in it for the screams, you should be in it for the laughs—they lurk behind every corner.

Afghan voters head to the polls despite security threats

Kabul, Afghanistan – Polls opened in Afghanistan’s long-delayed parliamentary election on Saturday amid security threats from the Taliban armed group who vowed to disrupt the “bogus” vote.

Voting centres opened at 7am (02:30GMT) and will close at 4pm (12:30GMT).

Close to nine million Afghans have registered to take part in the vote, which was first scheduled for 2015.

There are 21,000 voting stations in 5,100 polling centres in the country’s 33 participating provinces.

The vote – the third since the fall of the Taliban in 2001 – was postponed because of security fears and reforms to the voter registration process.

Security has been a major issue in the run up to voting day. Since late September, when campaigning officially started, at least 10 candidates have killed and two others abducted.

Afghanistan’s interior ministry told Al Jazeera it has deployed more than 70,000 security forces across the country to ensure security of the voters.

There was a heavy presence of security forces on the streets of the capital, Kabul, with vehicles been searched and some roads closed.

In the city’s District 9, voters started queuing early on Saturday. Most voters said they cast their ballot without any issues.

“I waited in the queue for 30 minutes to vote. The process was easy and I am happy. Overall I believe in the ongoing process, but we will see what will happen,” 60-year-old Ali Shah told Al Jazeera after casting his vote.

Afghanistan election: Concern about voting system

The electoral commission said one-quarter of the polling centres in the country will not be open because of security concerns.

Several hours after voting was supposed to start some polling stations were yet to allow voters to cast their ballot.

“We have been waiting for an hour and the process has not been started yet. They said the materials have not arrived yet,” Latifa Amarkhil, a doctor, said while she waited to vote at Al Fatah High School in Kabul.

Khalid Amel, an agent for one of the candidates, said there were also issues with some of the electronic voting materials.

“The biometric system has a problem. It does not accept some fingerprints. The process is not going according to schedule. The voting centre is small and large number of people have turnout,” Amel told Al Jazeera at Al Fatah High school.

“Our responsibility is to hold elections and it is the responsibility of government to maintain security of election,” Zabih Ullah Sadat, deputy spokesman for the electoral commission, told Al Jazeera on Saturday.

Despite the vote not taking place across the entire country, Sadat said the poll results will be valid and the vote free and fair.

“We have taken enough measures to hold transparent elections. The elections will be transparent and fair,” he said.

The election has been delayed by a week in the southern province of Kandahar following the assassination on Thursday of the province’s powerful police chief, General Abdul Raziq, in an attack claimed by the Taliban.

Voting will also not take place in Ghazni because of the precarious security situation – the Taliban controls significant parts of the province. There is also an ongoing dispute over how to divide Ghazni’s electoral constituencies to have a more balanced ethnic representation.

The Taliban has vowed to disrupt what it calls “bogus elections”.

“People who are trying to help in holding this process successfully by providing security should be targeted and no stone should be left unturned for the prevention and failure [of the elections],” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement last week.

Controversial vote

According to the Independent Election Commission (IEC), there are 2,565 candidates running for a seat in the 250-seat parliament, 417 of whom are women.

A total of 205 – nearly eight percent – of the candidates have registered as members of political parties. The rest are independent candidates.

Ballot counting will begin upon the conclusion of the vote in the presence of election observers.

The electoral commission has not set a timeline for announcing official results, but preliminary results are expected within a month.

Ryan Braun, Brewers Beat Dodgers to Force NLCS Game 7

MILWAUKEE, WI - OCTOBER 19: Ryan Braun #8 of the Milwaukee Brewers celebrates after hitting an RBI double to score Christian Yelich #22 against Hyun-Jin Ryu #99 of the Los Angeles Dodgers during the second inning in Game Six of the National League Championship Series at Miller Park on October 19, 2018 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Brewers forced a deciding game in the 2018 NLCS with a 7-2 victory Friday night over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

Jesus Aguilar, Mike Moustakas and Erik Kratz delivered run-scoring hits as part of the Brewers’ four-run first inning after David Freese had crushed a leadoff home run for the Dodgers.

L.A. threatened a comeback in the fifth when it brought the tying run to the plate, but Corey Knebel came out of the bullpen to secure two key outs and preserve the lead, which Milwaukee never relinquished.

Brewers’ Depth Will Continue To Prove Vital

Although much attention was given to the dominance of Brew Crew outfielder Christian Yelich during the second half of the season—and rightfully so—the team’s ability to get contributions from anywhere in the order was also crucial to edging the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

It’s a theme that’s carried into the club’s postseason run and was on full display Friday, as the Brewers got key hits from Aguilar, Moustakas and Kratz. Their hits in the first inning immediately changed the outlook of the game after Los Angeles had grabbed the early lead.

If playoff trends hold, the Dodgers aren’t going to give Yelich or Ryan Braun much to hit in Game 7. They have combined for seven walks in the series, as L.A. has been content to force them to chase outside the zone or accept the base on balls to make Milwaukee’s other hitters drive in runs.

The same could be said on the pitching side. Knebel was one of six Brewers relievers to appear in at least 49 games during the regular season, and only one of them had an ERA above 4.00 (Taylor Williams). Having so many reliable options out of the bullpen takes away a lot of pressure, especially in a Game 7.

“Our depth is what’s been valuable,” manager Craig Counsell told reporters before the playoffs. “And we feel like it’s helped us and allowed us [to win games], and there’s been nights where that doesn’t happen.”

Another strong showing from that unheralded group of secondary contributors Saturday night would likely push Milwaukee into the World Series.

Dodgers Must End Power Outage

Freese’s homer to open Game 6 was just the Dodgers’ third of the NLCS. The lack of long balls for an offense with so much pop is a main reason the series is going the distance.

Los Angeles ranked second in the majors and first in the National League with 235 home runs during the regular season. The club added eight more during its NLDS destruction of the Atlanta Braves, with six different players going yard in the four-game series.

If the Dodgers are going to turn the tide back in their favor for Game 7, it’s probably going to take a sudden return to form in the power department.

While the onus is mostly on Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger to put their game-changing power on display, the Dodgers featured 10 different players with at least 13 homers during the regular season. So there’s enough pop throughout the lineup to make serious noise.

Milwaukee’s Home-Field Advantage Makes It Game 7 Favorite

The Brewers have benefited from playing at Miller Park all year.

Their 51 home wins during the regular season were tied with the Cubs’ for the most in the National League. They went 2-0 in Milwaukee in their sweep of the Colorado Rockies in the Division Series and are now 2-1 in their friendly confines against the Dodgers in the NLCS.

Milwaukee Brewers @Brewers

Home field advantage is real and it’s spectacular. #OurCrewOurOctober https://t.co/pTQ6nCdyup

Typically, home-field advantage isn’t a major deal in baseball. Teams playing in their own park win 54 percent of the games in both the regular season and the playoffs, the lowest figures in the four major North American sports, per the Action Network.

In a series that’s so tightly contested, however, either side will be looking for every small edge it can get. For the Brewers, playing at home has provided a legitimate edge all year.

They’ll hope that remains true in Game 7 to punch their World Series ticket.

What’s Next?

Game 7 is set for Saturday night at Miller Park with first pitch scheduled for 8:09 p.m. ET. The pivotal clash will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.

Trump scorches Sinema, reprises ‘bad hombres’ attack in Arizona

Donald Trump

MESA, Ariz. – President Donald Trump took his flame-throwing stump speech to the desert Friday night, scorching Democrats in this key border state as weak on immigration and a reckless choice for voters in next month’s midterm elections.

“The Democrat Party has become too extreme and too dangerous to be trusted with power,” Trump said during a rally in Mesa, Arizona, his second stop in a three-state swing to boost GOP Senate candidates against vulnerable Democrats.

Story Continued Below

Trump was in Arizona to highlight the prospects of Republican Rep. Martha McSally, who is in a tight race with Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) to replace retiring Republican Sen. Jeff Flake.

Trump has been telling aides and allies in recent days that he feels good about his party’s chances of not only picking up Senate seats, but maintaining control of the House, if everything breaks his way.

The president’s cautious optimism that Republicans will defy history by keeping the number of losses in Congress’ lower chamber to a minimum is due in large part to what he views as his record of success, which he considers unmatched by any of his modern predecessors. One presidential adviser compared Trump’s reasoning to his attitude about fighting off Democratic-led impeachment — saying he feels like the job he’s done should insulate him from political punishment.

Trump, more than a half-dozen of his advisers told POLITICO, is deeply skeptical of public polls showing anything approaching a blue wave election — in part because he personally experienced surveys predicting his doom during the 2016 campaign, before pulling out the upset over Hillary Clinton.

The president also sees his rallies as landscape-defining events that seep into the ground of states and districts — his views in this case shaped by polls in states like Montana, Indiana and North Dakota, as well as in close House districts where he believes his spirited campaign events and primary endorsements have been pivotal.

“The president still has that magic to at least get people to show up to a rally. Now, can [the candidate] get people to show up to Election Day?” a Republican close to the president told POLITICO. “That’s the hope. That’s why we have them stand on the stage with the president.”

“He puts his arm around them and says, ‘come out in November.’ That’s something President Obama didn’t do,” to the same degree, “and President Bush couldn’t do.”

Internally, Trump has stressed the need to stay motivated and flexible — mostly avoiding engaging in talk about planning for losing, while opening a new messaging front in the final weeks before the midterms focused on Democrats’ treatment of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the migrant caravan heading toward the U.S., law and order and common sense.

“Democrats produce mobs,” he said in unveiling a new attack line that has drawn big cheers on the Western swing. “Republicans produce jobs.”

In Arizona, Trump torched Sinema as a “far-left extremist” who protested American involvement in Afghanistan while McSally was fighting in combat.

“A vote for Kyrsten Sinema is a wasted vote, and more importantly, it is a dangerous vote if you don’t want Schumer, cryin’ Chuck, for [Nancy] Pelosi and Maxine Waters,” Trump said, adding that a vote for McSally would be “the second greatest vote you’ll ever cast” — the greatest being a vote for him.

But hearkening back to lines from the 2016 campaign trail, he slammed “bad hombres” immigrating illegally to the U.S., later pointedly asking Hispanic attendees in the crowd whether they supported him or not.

“And catch and release, how about that? That’s my favorite,” Trump said of the practice of releasing undocumented immigrants detained at the border. “Catch. You catch a damn killer. You catch a bad hombre. You catch a bad one.”

The president has seized on reports of a so-called “caravan” of Central American migrants, many of whom reportedly plan to seek asylum in the U.S., as fresh evidence that Democrats have failed to enact tough immigration policies like his long-proposed border wall. Repeating a favorite line of his, Trump said the notion that “good people” are coming across the border is simply untrue.

Earlier in the day, he told reporters that “many of those people – a fairly big percentage, of those people, are criminals.”

“You think they’re all wonderful people. You’ve got some bad people in those groups,” Trump said. “You’ve got some tough people in those groups. And I’ll tell you what, this country doesn’t want them. OK?”

When pressed before the rally if he had any evidence that undocumented immigrants were bad people, specifically “hardened people.” Trump lashed out at the reporter.

“Oh, please. Please,” Trump said, emphasizing that he did not say it applied to all immigrants. “Don’t be a baby. OK?”

Kawhi Leonard Stellar as Raptors Beat Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward, Celtics

The Toronto Raptors made a statement Friday night, beating the Boston Celtics 113-101 in an early-season Eastern Conference clash at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

Raptors small forward Kawhi Leonard turned in a standout performance for the 2-0 Raptors, registering a game-high 31 points to go along with 10 rebounds and three assists.

The Celtics, who fell to 1-1, received balanced scoring throughout their lineup in the loss, as all five starters scored in double figures.

After struggling in the season-opening win over the Philadelphia 76ers, both Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward showed marked improvement Friday.

Irving finished with a team-high 21 points as well as six assists and four rebounds, while Hayward pitched in 14 points and seven rebounds.

Boston wasted a solid shooting effort from three-point range, as it connected at a 38.9 percent clip. The Celtics struggled from inside the arc, though, as Toronto out-shot Boston 46.7 percent to 40.4 percent overall.

Leonard Makes Raptors Team to Beat in Eastern Conference

After posting a double-double in Toronto’s season-opening win against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Leonard was even better Friday, and he made it clear that the Raptors are a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.

Although he was only 10-of-25 from the field, Leonard was aggressive and decisive throughout the night, and he attacked the basket on numerous occasions:

He led Toronto with 36 minutes played and is showing no ill effects of the quad injury that cost him nearly all of last season with the San Antonio Spurs.

Chris Walder of The Score noted that Leonard is seemingly playing with no limitations:

Chris Walder @WalderSports

I think Kawhi Leonard is healthy, you guys.

When the Raptors traded for Leonard, they knew they were getting an elite two-way player who contributes in all areas when healthy.

Leonard did precisely that against the Celtics and led Toronto to victory against an arguably more talented team:

There is a lot of basketball left to be played this season, but Jay King of The Athletic observed that Kawhi looks poised to be in the MVP conversation provided he can remain healthy:

Jay King @ByJayKing

Kawhi Leonard came back the same MVP candidate he was before he left.

Two seasons ago, Leonard finished third in MVP voting behind Russell Westbrook and James Harden.

The Raptors were a strong team for the past several seasons with DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry as their nucleus, but they couldn’t find a way to get past LeBron James and the Cavs.

With LeBron now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and Leonard bringing a more complete game to the table than DeRozan, the Raptors are a serious threat to win the Eastern Conference.

Boston will likely have something to say about it before the season over, but with Leonard playing like a top-five player in the league, Toronto finally has the superstar it has long needed to get over the hump.

Hayward, Irving Approaching Midseason Form Despite Loss

The scoreboard made Friday’s loss to Toronto look more lopsided than it actually was, and Boston emerged from the game with several promising takeaways to build upon.

Chief among them is the fact that Hayward and Irving played significantly better than they did in the season opener.

In that win over Philly, Hayward and Irving combined to go just 6-of-26 for 17 points, as they were both clearly rusty after missing time last season with injuries.

Hayward missed all but one game in 2018-19 with a gruesome leg injury, while Irving missed 22 regular-season games and Boston’s entire playoff run with a knee ailment.

Considering Hayward has played barely any competitive basketball over the past year, there was a lot to like about his game against Toronto.

He went 6-of-13 from the floor, was active on the boards and contributed in all areas, much like he did throughout his tenure with the Utah Jazz.

Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer pointed out that Hayward essentially looked like himself Friday:

Kevin O’Connor @KevinOConnorNBA

Gordon Hayward is playing a lot more like Gordon Hayward tonight.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons added that the one-time All-Star is very close to being the player Celtics fans hoped for when he signed last offseason:

Bill Simmons @BillSimmons

I’m like 3 more good Hayward plays away from a “GORDON HAYWARD IS BACK!!!!!!” tweet

Irving’s play was nightmarish against the Sixers, as he needed Jayson Tatum to bail him out from an offensive perspective.

Friday was a far more familiar sight, though, as he shot 50 percent from the field and led the team in scoring.

Most importantly, Irving looked comfortably driving to the hoop, which is among his best attributes:

 1. NBA Let Players Know They Have to Cover Branded Tattoos

 2. The NBA Is Back and the Soccer World Is Pumped

 3. Boban Is Back to Break It Down for Another Season

 4. Players Battle Campers in Rivalry of the Summer

 6. Andrew Bynum Is Making an NBA Comeback

The Celtics have an embarrassment of riches, and finding the right combination is harder than the Golden State Warriors have made it look.

Hayward and Irving figure to be the go-to guys along with Tatum as the season progresses, and if they continue to improve in the coming weeks, they should be ready for that responsibility soon.

Until that time comes, the onus will be on head coach Brad Stevens to push the right buttons of his deep and talented rotation.

What’s Next?

Boston will have a chance to bounce back Saturday when it travels to New York City to take on the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Meanwhile, the Raptors will look to improve to 3-0 on Saturday when they face the Washington Wizards on the road.

Anyone can take a ride in these self-driving cars

If you’re visiting Arlington, Texas, and have been itching to try out an autonomous vehicle, you’re in luck.

Starting Friday, three Drive.ai self-driving cars (and eventually five) will be available to ride — for anyone, not just office workers, city officials, or a select group of “early riders.” Back in July, Drive.ai piloted the autonomous Nissan NV200 vans in Frisco, Texas. The Arlington deployment will be around for the next year.

“This is a not a quick demonstration,” CEO Bijit Halder said in a phone call this week.

If you’re interested, you can download the Drive.ai app or order a car from a kiosk at five pickup points. The cars are taking passengers along three routes that hit the Dallas Cowboys stadium, the Texas Rangers ballpark, the Arlington Convention Center, restaurant districts, and other venues.

SEE ALSO: Don’t believe the naysayers: Self-driving cars are already here in many ways

The cars aren’t entirely driverless — there’s a safety driver in the driver’s seat and a “chaperone” in the passenger seat. But they’re still recognizable as self-driving cars. CEO Halder called them “distinct.” They’re bright orange and blue, with a special city emblem on the side. “Self-driving cars should stand out and proclaim itself as a self-driving car,” Halder said.

<img alt="Drive.ai has three self-driving cars in its second Texas city." class="" data-caption="Drive.ai has three self-driving cars in its second Texas city." data-credit-name="Drive.ai” data-credit-provider=”custom type” data-fragment=”m!cf99″ data-image=”https://ift.tt/2S2TPeH; data-micro=”1″ src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/t2nohjQ2iNEXtsbqqxcld8PoZ9M=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F867477%2Fd2c4a7d3-bf28-494d-8cfd-a66965a0f483.jpg” title=”Drive.ai has three self-driving cars in its second Texas city.”>

Image: Drive.ai

Human-robot interaction is a key component of Drive.ai’s vehicles. Digital panels on the car have images and words displayed to tell pedestrians, bicyclists, and others on the road what the car is going to do, such as stop for you to cross. They also inform people outside the car whether it’s in self-driving or manual mode.

Here’s what that looks like on the road.

The year-long pilot will provide a trove of feedback about the self-driving experience, something Halder relishes.

Back from the experience in Frisco, the autonomous vehicle company had thought riders would ask about safety. Instead many passengers asked about controlling the music that played during the ride. Halder took this as a promising sign. “If you’re bored, I’m happy,” he said.
