Donald Trump learns to love his haters

Just as his onetime naysayers have come around to the president, so too has Trump embraced establishment pols he once spurned.

ELKO, Nev. — Not that long ago, it wasn’t hard to imagine moderate Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) breaking with President Donald Trump in his reelection campaign, given Nevada’s swing-state status and Heller’s refusal before the 2016 election to say whether he’d vote for Trump.

But on Saturday the two were acting like old pals. Standing onstage in this small rural city in the far reaches of Northern Nevada, Heller basked in the glow of the president, who trekked cross-country to stump for his onetime skeptic.

Story Continued Below

The president praised the senator for his collaboration on tax reform and veterans issues. Heller declared the president’s first two years a triumph: “Welcome to Trump Country!” he beamed, turning to Trump: “Mr. President, you know a little bit about gold. In fact, I think everything you touch turns to gold.”

Trump has nursed some legendary grudges. But his union of obligation with Heller, coming after their turbulent start, underscores what his advisers describe as the president’s increasing comfort with bending to political imperatives the longer he’s in the White House. And it provides insight into his evolution from anti-establishment interloper to party leader whose fortunes are now closely linked with Republicans.

On his swing though Nevada, Arizona and Montana this week, Trump touted his alliances with former rivals, brandishing his capacity for political absolution like a United Nations peacekeeper might carry the blue helmet.

“You know, you go to wars together and then, if you’re smart, and if they’re smart, you get along,” Trump said Thursday his stop in Missoula, Montana. He went on to say he has “great relationships” with his 2016 rivals.

“Ted Cruz has become a friend of mine. He’s doing great. And Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee,” he said, adding to the list of former adversaries. Left unmentioned were Trump’s previous spats with Republican Lindsey Graham, whose cell phone number he shared with the world, and Rand Paul, whom he suggested was ugly during an early presidential debate. Now, the two senators are golf buddies and among Trump’s closest friends in the Senate.

On Monday, Trump will rally at an 18,000-seat arena in Houston for Cruz, who is facing a stiff challenge from Rep. Beto O’Rourke, the Democratic darling and national fundraising juggernaut. On Wednesday, the president will be in Mosinee, Wisconsin, to rally for Gov. Scott Walker, another former 2016 foe whose state is key to Trump’s reelection hopes.

“If you look at Trump and his history — he’s always willing to make nice with people who will make nice with him,” a former White House official said.

Trump doesn’t need to have a deep personal connection to appreciate someone’s value. In some cases he prefers a comfortable, but arms-length pact based on mutual respect and utility, according to more than a half-dozen White House aides and outside presidential advisers.

This year, Republicans’ efforts to maintain Senate control have been made easier by Trump’s tendency to let bygones be bygones. Martha McSally, a GOP congresswoman running to succeed Trump-detractor Jeff Flake, the senator from Arizona, also declined to endorse Trump in 2016.

But Trump resisted wading into McSally’s primary against hard-line conservatives Kelli Ward and Joe Arpaio, the ex-Maricopa County sheriff whom the president pardoned last year for criminal contempt of court. On Friday, Trump headlined a Scottsdale fundraiser benefiting a joint committee of McSally, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Arizona Republican Party that raised more than $700,000, said a person familiar with the event.

Later, Trump sang the praises of McSally, a former pilot who was stationed in the Middle East, while they toured Luke Air Force Base, and then again at his midterm rally at a hangar in Mesa.

“Martha’s a veteran, a great veteran, a great fighter, a warrior,” Trump said, contrasting her background with her Democratic rival’s. “While Martha was bravely fighting the Taliban, Kyrsten Sinema said she had no problem with Americans defecting from our country to join the Taliban.”

Trump’s evolution with Cruz is especially striking. In 2016, Trump suggested that Cruz’s father was involved in JFK’s assasination, and seemed to imply that the senator’s wife was ugly. Cruz returned the favor by announcing on stage at the Republican National Convention that Republicans should “vote your conscience.”

Government aides to Trump and Cruz now communicate regularly, and the president and senator have spoken directly on everything from funding for hurricane disaster relief to trade policy to Trump’s Supreme Court nominations, according to a senior Republican official with insight into the connection.

Along the way came little breakthroughs.

In the midst of the health care fight last year, Cruz saw the opportunity to debate Sen. Bernie Sanders live on CNN as a way to highlight what Republicans view as Sanders’ outside-the-mainstream support for “Medicare for all,” as well as to show that he could be a team player by helping advance the GOP and Trump agendas. Trump was pleased enough with the performance he reached out to Cruz to tell him he did a good job. (One aide familiar with the exchange noted the president did not explicitly say he tuned in to CNN, his favorite media punching bag.)

Yet of all Trump’s relations, it’s his pact with Heller that is most indicative of his approach. The senator holds a slight lead over Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen in recent public polls.

“The president is well aware of the challenging political nature of Nevada and he appreciates that Sen. Heller has done a really good job in the U.S. Senate,” Bill Stepien, the White House political director, said in an interview. “It’s not an easy place to get elected. It’s not an easy place to get reelected.”

The lone Senate Republican fighting to hold a state carried by Hillary Clinton in 2016, Heller that year wouldn’t say who he was voting for. After the “Access Hollywood” tape leaked, the senator famously said he was “100 percent against Clinton, 99 percent against Trump.”

Early in the Trump presidency, one Republican strategist here recalled the anger directed at the senator in conversations with local activists around the state. If Heller remained on that path, “it would have been curtains,” former Republican Nevada Gov. Bob List said.

Heller stood alongside Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval in announcing his opposition to Obamacare repeal legislation. In July 2017, Trump jokingly threatened Heller by noting “he wants to remain a senator” in reference to whether Heller would vote for the Republican plan.

But in private sessions working with him on alternative health care legislation proposed by Graham and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Trump and Heller got to know each other better, aides said. Their work grew more serious when Heller was in the thick of helping write and pass tax reform as part of the Finance Committee.

While the tax bill gave Trump and Heller something to tout, the aides said it was more narrowly focused bills — many on veterans issues — that cemented the association.

Finally, last fall, Heller said in a statement to The Nevada Independent that he did end up voting for Trump. “I think he sensed that people appreciate the administration, and he knows he’s on the right side when he’s in line with the president,” List said.

Nevada Democrats have sought to exploit the old tensions. Sarah Abel, press secretary for the state party, said Heller’s “total 180 flip-flop on Donald Trump is the perfect example of how he’s a self-serving career politician who will say anything if he thinks it helps him politically.”

Trump, for his part, acknowledges the rocky start he and Heller had. In June, he said they went from “shaky” to “rock solid.” At his Las Vegas rally with Heller in September, Trump spoke about the transition from disliking to respecting and then liking one another.

“Then,” Trump added, “we started to love each other.”

Twitter quietly fired a suspected Saudi Arabian spy, report says

We’ve all seen what can happen when nefarious interests weaponize a social media platform like Twitter. Now imagine how much worse it would be if some foreign agent actually got a job at the company.

That’s what happened in 2013, apparently. In a sprawling Saturday New York Times report looking at the Saudi Arabian leadership’s social media campaign to silence critics and influence thinking, one detail stands out: The story of former Twitter employee Ali Alzabarah.

SEE ALSO: Twitter’s Jack Dorsey doesn’t use a computer or a tablet, apparently

Alzabarah joined the company in 2013 and worked his way into an engineering position that afforded him access to “the personal information and account activity of Twitter’s users, including phone numbers and I.P. addresses, unique identifiers for devices connected to the internet,” the Times report said.

Intelligence officials alerted Twitter executives at the end of 2015 that Saudi leadership had been “grooming” Alzabarah to keep tabs on accounts belonging to dissidents and critics of the Saudi government. Twitter never shared this widely and didn’t confirm it for the NYT report; the info comes instead from “five people briefed on the matter.”

Although an internal investigation ultimately turned up no evidence that Alzabarah had shared sensitive data, three of the Times sources noted that Saudia intelligence agents “eventually persuaded him to peer into several user accounts.”

Alzabarah was placed on administrative leave and investigated shortly after Western intelligence officials approached Twitter. He was fired in December 2015 — after which he reportedly returned to Saudi Arabia and took a job there with the government.

While Twitter never issued any kind of public alert regarding the extent of the apparent intrusion, the Times report notes that steps were taken.

A Dec. 11, 2015 safety email went out to “the owners of a few dozen accounts Mr. Alzabarah had accessed.” The list included “security and privacy researchers, surveillance specialists, policy academics and journalists,” a number of which were involved in the Tor project.

The revelations about Alzabarah come in the midst of a larger report detailing Saudi Arabia’s apparent playbook for silencing dissent on social media. Twitter has taken steps in recent days to shut down spambots pushing a pro-Saudi agenda, but the NYT report makes it clear that this kind of thing has been ongoing for a number of years.

Glorious new ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ intro is what this show is all about

In what is simultaneously the most exciting and saddest turn of events, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is back on The CW right now for its final season. And on Friday, the fourth season’s second episode introduced an all-new theme song.

For those who might be in the dark: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is an underwatched masterpiece. It’s a musical comedy — something we don’t see too often on TV — that follows the exploits of a young lawyer named Rebecca Bunch.

The story is a tough one to sum up. In the very first episode, Rebecca runs into an old flame on the streets of New York City, then proceeds to move to his hometown on a whim. The unfolding story justifies this apparent deeply problematic life choice by painting Rebecca as a complex individual who’s defined by much, much more than this guy she once crushed on.

The Season 4 intro song leans in on that idea, running through the many faces, moods, and emotions of Rebecca before settling on the idea that — like most people who are actual humans, not characters in a written story — “she’s too hard to summarize.”

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs on The CW every Friday at 9:00 p.m.

This fifth grader’s baked potato costume is better than whatever you’ve planned for Halloween

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week.

Halloween is fast approaching and while you may think your planned costume’s impressive, there’s a very good chance it won’t top this fifth grader who dressed as a baked potato.

Reddit user seal2781, a 24-year-old named Celia, recently shared a throwback Halloween picture from 2004 — the year she followed her heart and dressed as a baked potato wrapped in foil with a li’l pat of butter on top. Precious! Delicious! All around wholesome!

The costume is one of the closest things we’ve seen to absolute Halloween perfection, and the kind of ensemble we should all strive to put together this time of year. If you’re having doubts about how great it is, we’re not exaggerating. See for yourself…

SEE ALSO: This Kevin from ‘The Office’ Halloween costume for babies needs to exist IRL

Celia told Mashable via Reddit that she fashioned the wearable baked potato for her elementary school Halloween costume contest. The costume won first prize and for that, she received a whole $5!

“The day before the contest I decided I wanted to be a baked potato,” she wrote. “I’m not really sure why — I just thought it would be funny.” She says her dad Ron helped make the costume out of cardboard boxes.

“I really felt like a baked potato wearing it.”

“We covered the boxes in wide plastic wrap to hold it all together, and then covered it in foil and added the fluff and brown paper ‘skin.’ The pad of butter was just a small pizza box covered in yellow cellophane paper.”

The baked potato has everything you’d want from a good costume. The homemade aspect shows off your resourceful side, it’ll give people a good laugh, and you’ll also stand out from a crowd of store bought superheroes, princesses, and more. Though it does have one downfall…

“The main thing I remember about the costume was how hot it was. I really felt like a baked potato wearing it,” Celia said. But still, an overall success.

Celia’s family has been cranking out next-level costumes for years, she explained, recalling her brother’s most memorable ensemble: a massive five-foot tall baseball bat. Stunning.

The Pocophone F1 is the best smartphone for the buck right now

Great specs • Tons of features • Attractive design • Amazing price considering the hardware

Camera lacks OIS • Some bugs • No water resistance or wireless charging

The Pocophone F1 is the best deal in smartphones right now, bar none.

Say you want a smartphone with top specs. Say you’re absolutely disgusted with the prices of flagship smartphones these days. Amazingly, this is not a problem without a solution.

Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer whose smartphones typically have top-notch specs and features while undercutting the prices of most flagships by a serious margin, has a new sub-brand: Pocophone. And the first smartphone to launch under the brand, the Pocophone F1, is all you’d expect from Xiaomi — even a little bit more.

SEE ALSO: How to remove scratches from your phone

Launched in late August, the Pocophone F1 (called the Poco F1 in some markets) has a very tough job: It has to make people buy it despite all the brand-new, ultra-powerful smartphones that closely followed it (Phonetober still isn’t over, so there’s more to come).

After spending nearly two weeks with the phone, I’m convinced that this won’t be a very hard task. The Pocophone F1 offers the best value on the smartphone market right now.

Crazy-good value

First things first: The Pocophone F1 starts at $285, but you can spec it up to $407. It comes in several different flavors, ranging from 6GB to 8GB of RAM and 64GB to 256GB of storage. My unit was somewhere in the middle: an Armoured Edition, with a Kevlar back, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

However, visual details and storage aside, the unit I tested performs exactly like the cheapest Pocophone F1, as it has the same amount of RAM and the same chips. Keep that in mind while reading this review; the performance I’m describing can be had for $285.

Beautiful in Kevlar

I’ve only held the variant of the Pocophone F1 coated in aramid fiber (Kevlar), and I love the design. The back of the phone feels soft and is extremely grippy — you won’t be dropping this phone much unless you’re really clumsy. The dark gray pattern on the back is simple but very effective. I love the modern-yet-somehow-also-retro look it gave the phone. Among the many Androids I’ve tested, this is the one that I’d wear around without a case, just to show off that back. The phone comes with a simple soft-plastic case which completely obscures the pattern on the back, making the device look a lot less exciting.

The phone’s plastic frame is also dark gray, which sounds boring, but somehow it isn’t. Perhaps it’s the red accents around the camera lenses on the back or the silver “Pocophone” logo on the bottom that complement the design so well.

I’ve only got two qualms about the design. The fingerprint sensor is a bit too close to the cameras; I smudged the lower lens all the time while navigating my finger to the sensor. And the phone’s chin on the front is a bit bigger than you’ll see on most newer phones. I won’t spent too much time on the notch given that basically every other phone has it these days. It’s very iPhone-like in size, which isn’t bad at all.

A surprisingly good display

Yes, the iPhone X (right) has a better screen than the Pocophone F1 (left). But the differences are small.

That notched, 6.18-inch, 2,246 x 1,080-pixel screen is an LCD, not an OLED, but it doesn’t make a huge difference. I compared the Pocophone F1 against the iPhone X and it’s only slightly dimmer on full brightness. I’ve watched some dark videos to see how the screen will handle very dark areas, and yes, the iPhone X has deeper blacks and better contrast. But had I not had such a superior screen to compare with, I wouldn’t have any issues with the Pocophone F1’s screen. I’ve seen a similar thing on several LCD-sporting Androids lately: LCD in general has gotten really good, and OLED screens simply aren’t that much better anymore.

The way content is shown on that screen is another matter. On YouTube, extending the video to full screen will make the video rounded on the right side, and cut off squarely below the notch on the left. Many apps will have important info obscured by the notch. These types of issues aren’t unique to the Pocophone F1 — most notched Android phones have them — but they’re annoying nevertheless.

Software that gets out of your way

I don’t spend too many words on brand-specific Android user interfaces these days. Almost every Android brand has one, and they’re all pretty similar, as most of them try to nab the best mix of the pure Android experience and iOS.

For the Pocophone F1, Xiaomi made a special, somewhat minimalist version of its MIUI interface. The experience is a tad more similar to stock Android — the app drawer is enabled by default, for example. Since I’m not a stock Android purist, this didn’t matter to me, but it might matter to some users.

Getting acquainted with the phone’s settings took some time. For example, to rearrange the shortcuts that show up when you slide your finger downwards from the notch, you have to go to Settings > Notifications & Status Bar > Toggle Positions, and the toggling itself is done in a horribly unintuitive way. But once I’d found everything I needed, using the Pocophone F1 was similar to using any newer Android phone. The phone came with some degree of bloatware — including some Mi software and a bunch of Microsoft apps I didn’t ask for — but nothing too aggressive.

One downside: The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, not Android 9 Pie. Hopefully, it’ll get upgraded sooner rather than later — Xiaomi promised it’ll happen by the end of November.

Brutal performance, long-lasting battery

The Pocophone F1 has the best battery life of all the phones I've tested.

The Pocophone F1 has the best battery life of all the phones I’ve tested.

Image: Stan Schroeder/Mashable

The Pocophone F1 has the best chip Qualcomm currently has to offer, the Snapdragon 845, coupled with an Adreno 630 graphics chip. With 6GB of RAM on board as well, this thing is fast. It’s probably the fastest Android phone I ever tried, which was especially apparent after a few games of PUBG, which was absolutely stutter-free.

Equally as important: The phone didn’t overheat while I played the game. I barely experienced any extra heat at all. This could be due to Xiaomi’s LiquidCool tech, which uses a heat pipe to drive excess heat away from the processor. This is a big deal — too many phones these days have nominally great specs but become awfully hot after you throw something a bit more demanding at them.

Battery life on the F1 was excellent. I was able to regularly squeeze two days of heavy usage out of it, and most users will likely be able to use it for two and a half days without charging. It’s easily the best phone, battery life-wise, that I’ve ever tested; only the bigger Huawei phones come close. Quick Charge 3.0 is supported, so you’ll be able to charge the phone quickly once the battery finally runs out of juice.

A few more tidbits. The F1 has a headphone jack and a stereo speaker. It’s not the loudest around, nor does it packs the punchiest sound, but at least it doesn’t get distorted at full volume.

What’s missing? Also, bugs

The game interface is partially obscured by the notch.

I wouldn’t call the Pocophone F1 buggy, but I did experience more than one bug during my usage. When I first fired up the camera, it crashed so bad that I had to reboot the phone to fix it. Also, the fingerprint sensor occasionally wouldn’t work. Not in the sense that it wouldn’t register my fingerprint correctly; it just stopped working completely until I manually unlocked the phone. Most of the time the phone worked fine, but on a phone that came out in August, this should not happen. On the bright side, I’ve received two updates while finalizing this text, one of which says it improves camera stability, so at least it looks like Xiaomi is ironing out the kinks.

While not exactly a bug, I didn’t like how the Pocophone handled automatic screen brightness. It was always either too bright or too dim, prompting me to switch to manual adjustment after a while.

For some reason, my version of Pocophone F1 did not have face-unlock capabilities, even though these are present on the phone. Face unlocking on the F1 is definitely present in some markets, so it looks as if Xiaomi is rolling it out slowly, market by market, for some reason.

Also, there’s no water resistance or wireless charging. To be honest, I didn’t expect these on a phone this cheap, but if these are important to you, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Finally, there’s no NFC, either, so if you planned to use Android Pay… sorry.

Camera is just alright

Pocophone F1 has a fairly common dual camera combo: A 12-megapixel main sensor coupled with a 5-megapixel depth sensor.

The Pocophone F1’s 12-megapixel main camera will produce good photos most of the time. I was impressed with how fast it was; I was typically able to fire it up and take decent shots of moving targets, which isn’t always the case with Android phones.

I’m not a big fan of AI-assisted photography that’s all the rage lately. I don’t mind the AI-assisted scene recognition, but I do mind the resulting photos, which are typically over-processed.

The Pocophone F1 does does this, too: Check out that unnaturally blue water in the photo below — sure, it looks nice, but water was greenish that day, not blue. Luckily, you can turn the AI off with an easily accessible button on top of the camera UI.

If you don’t mind the differences in color, though, both photos are pretty great. I was able to consistently get beautiful shots with the F1, as long as I had enough light.

The secondary, 5-megapixel depth sensor is there for the bokeh-style shots, but they’re a mixed bag. Unless you’re at the right distance, and your subject is still, you’ll get a pretty bad, unnaturally blurred shot.

Pocophone F1's portrait mode works alright on humans. Try anything more complicated, and the blurring will be all over the place.

In the evening, the F1 sometimes took brighter shots than my iPhone X. But zoom in closer, and you’ll see the photo is horribly soft and smudgy. The reason for this is likely another feature that the F1 doesn’t have: optical image stabilization. You’ll survive without it, but this is not the best phone for taking night-time photos.

Take the two photos above. From afar, the photo taken with the Pocophone F1 looks brighter and more vibrant. But the colors are fake; the iPhone X took a far more realistic photo. And check out the detail below; the boat and the edges of the hill in the distance are horribly smudgy, making the photo taken with the F1 look like a watercolor painting.

Pocophone F1's camera just cannot cope with a low light scenario such as this one.

The 20-megapixel selfie camera will take huge, detailed selfies. They’ll look good in the daylight, but don’t expect miracles in low light.

One thing that's great about Pocophone F1's selfie camera: Selfies aren't distorted.

Image: Stan Schroeder/Mashable

All in all, while cameras won’t be the main reason why you’re buying this phone, most of the time the F1 will take photos that can hold their own against much more expensive phones.

Best bang for the buck

The Pocophone isn’t perfect: It can be buggy, its camera is mediocre (though only if you measure it against the very best out there) and it lacks certain premium features like an OLED screen, water resistance and wireless charging. But in terms of performance and battery life, it might actually be the best phone around. Plus, extra features like liquid cooling tech and Kevlar-coated back (on the Armoured Edition) make it feel special.

I love having a phone whose back doesn't scratch easily.

I love having a phone whose back doesn’t scratch easily.

Image: Stan Schroeder/Mashable

Now, for the best part. Based on pricing in India, where the F1 was first launched, the 6GB/64GB version of the device costs just $285, partly due to the Indian rupee losing value compared to the dollar in recent months. The 6GB/128GB variant costs $326, the 8GB/256GB variant costs $394, and if you want the Kevlar back on top of that, it costs $407.

Regardless of which version you get (provided you can get it where you live), that’s an absolutely stellar deal. The old question of “should you buy a flagship” or “should you buy three Xiaomi phones with roughly the same specs for the same price” has never been more relevant.

And even if you compare the Pocophone F1 with other price-mindful flagships such as OnePlus 6 or the Oppo F9, the Pocophone F1 is still cheaper and faster. Unless there’s some specific detail about the F1 that really irks you, it’s hard to argue against it being the best deal on the market right now.
