Australia apologises to child sex abuse victims

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison issued a national apology to victims of child sex abuse in an emotional address to parliament on Monday, acknowledging the state failed to stop “evil dark crimes” committed over decades.

The official apology came after a five-year Royal Commission detailed more than 15,000 survivors’ harrowing child sex abuse claims involving thousands of state institutions.

“This was done by Australians to Australians, enemies in our midst,” Morrison said in a nationally televised address.

“As a nation, we failed them, we forsook them, and that will always be our shame,” he said, his voice cracking as he recounted abuse that permeated religious and other organisations.

Decrying abuse that happened “day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, decade after decade” in schools, churches, youth groups, scout groups, orphanages, sports clubs and family homes, Morrison declared a new national credo in the face of allegations: “We believe you.”

“Today we say sorry to the children we failed. Sorry. To the parents whose trust was betrayed and who have struggled to pick up the pieces. Sorry. To the whistleblowers who we did not listen to. Sorry.

Scott Morrison in as new prime minister of Australia

“To the spouses, partners, wives, husbands, children, who have dealt with the consequences of the abuse, cover-ups and obstruction. Sorry. To generations past and present. Sorry.”

‘Shameful’ history

In parliament, lawmakers stood for a moment of silence following the remarks as hundreds of survivors looked on or watched in official events across the country.

Relatives of victims who have died wore the tags with the names of daughters and sons, brothers and sisters, for whom this apology comes too late.

A series of institutions have already apologised for their failings, including Australian Catholic leaders who have lamented the church’s “shameful” history of child abuse and cover-ups.

The formal apology comes almost a year after the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse uncovered the shocking extent of abuse of children by clergy, orphanage supervisors, and others in positions of power.

According to the Royal Commission, seven percent of Catholic priests in Australia were accused of abuse between 1950 and 2010, but the allegations were never investigated, with children ignored and even punished.

Some senior members of the church in Australia have been prosecuted and found guilty of covering up abuse.

Morrison said he would establish a national museum to raise awareness of the impacts of child sexual abuse.

Browns’ Own Mistakes Spoiling Baker Mayfield’s Rookie Season

TAMPA, FL - OCTOBER 21: Baker Mayfield #6 of the Cleveland Browns walks off the field during a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium on October 21, 2018 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

Just two wins.

The 2018 Cleveland Browns have a different look. a different feel. They’ve gone to overtime four times in seven games. They’ve held the lead or been tied in the fourth quarter in six of those games. Defensively, they entered Week 7 ranked sixth in the league at Football Outsiders in terms of DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average), and through seven outings they lead the NFL with 20 takeaways.

And yet the Browns have won just two of those seven games after again falling short despite an abundance of opportunities to beat the self-destructive Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday in Florida.

They might look and feel different, but with that 26-23 overtime loss in Tampa, they’re once again buried in last place in the AFC North. They have contender-worthy talent on both sides of the ball and tremendous promise with rookie No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield at quarterback, but little has changed in the win column.

The Browns have won just three games in two-and-a-half years. It’s been longer than three calendar years since they last won a football game outside of Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

A better-coached, more disciplined, more focused team with the same roster could be 6-1 right now. But the Browns aren’t well-coached and aren’t disciplined or focused, which is why changes might be on the horizon despite obvious improvements and soaring potential.

Benjamin Allbright @AllbrightNFL

Via text: “The ice under Hue [Jackson] is as thin as it can possibly get. Not sure he makes it to the bye.”

The league’s most penalized team was flagged a ludicrous 14 times against the Bucs. One of those—a hold on offensive tackle Desmond Harrison—put the offense in a hole before it had run a play on what was eventually a three-and-out to start overtime, while another—an offside on linebacker Genard Avery—gave the Bucs a free first down on the game-winning drive.

Ultimately, seven of their 14 penalties came in the fourth quarter and overtime.

It was par for the course, and it spoke to the job Browns head coach Hue Jackson has done at preparing his young team for critical moments.

Daryl Ruiter @RuiterWrongFAN

#Browns have had opportunities to win 6 games this season. They’ve won 2. John Dorsey believes he built a roster capable of winning. This year is about Ws and Ls. Whether that evaluation comes tonight, next week, the week after, the bye or January, 2-4-1 doesn’t cut it

The football gods weren’t on Cleveland’s side when Tampa Bay kicker Chandler Catanzaro improbably hit a 59-yard field goal for the win late in overtime, but it shouldn’t have come to that.

The Browns were forced to play catch-up after failing to score on offense in the first half against a defense off to a historically bad start. The Bucs D entered Sunday having allowed 6.9 yards per offensive play—on pace to be the worst rate in modern NFL history—and yet an offense run by Jackson and Todd Haley mustered just 2.6 yards per play in the first half.

Their first touchdown came after the Buccaneers fumbled inside their own 30-yard line. Their next one was abetted by a 24-yard Tampa Bay pass interference penalty that resulted in a 1st-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Their third came after a 32-yard punt return from Jabrill Peppers put them inside the red zone.

With that in mind, the Browns were on one hand lucky to take the Bucs to overtime. But on the other hand, how do you possess that much talent, get lucky against an inferior opponent and still lose? A Peppers fumble led to Tampa Bay’s game-winning field goal, but Mayfield had the first turnover-free start of his career while completing a solid 23 of 34 passes with two touchdown throws for a 104.4 passer rating.

And the Browns still lost.

Jackson and the coaching staff deserve a large portion of the blame for all the on-field mistakes, just as Jackson and Haley deserve a large portion of the blame for the offensive ineptitude. Being an offensive expert, Jackson said after the game—per ESPN.com’s Pat McManamon—that he now felt the need to become more involved in the offense, but that unit was no better when he was deeply involved and Haley was employed by a competitor in 2016 and 2017.

At this point, you have to wonder how the man still has his job.

Brent Sobleski @brentsobleski

Hue Jackson is now 11-43-1 as an NFL head coach. Only one coach in league history, Bert Bell (Eagles & Steelers, 1936-41), with 40 or more games has a worse win percentage.

Against an imploding, slumping opponent that just fired its defensive coordinator, it shouldn’t have come to a long-distance overtime field goal on Sunday. This was Cleveland’s game to win.

Ditto for a Week 1 overtime tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers, when the Browns became just the fourth team this century to fail to win despite going plus-five in turnovers (penalties and a missed field goal in overtime did them in).

And for a Week 2 loss to the New Orleans Saints, when they missed an extra point that would have given them the lead with just over one minute left and allowed 18 fourth-quarter points.

And for a Week 4 loss to the Oakland Raiders, when they turned the ball over four times and inexplicably ditched hot running back Nick Chubb late as they choked on a 28-14 lead.

Mayfield hasn’t been perfect, but those charged with supporting him have done more harm than good. He was bound to experience growing pains while transitioning to a pro-style offense, but those pains have been magnified by poor decisions on and off the field.

As the future of the NFL’s hungriest franchise, Mayfield is generally exceeding expectations, but Jackson and the Browns have completely wasted his encouraging rookie campaign.

Different look, different feel. Same old Browns.

Is Riyadh’s claim Jamal Khashoggi died in a fistfight credible?

Saudi Arabia says Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside its consulate in Istanbul.

The announcement was made on Saudi state TV in the middle of the night – 17 days after the Saudi journalist was last seen going into the compound.

The kingdom says there was a brawl and Khashoggi died. US President Donald Trump says he finds that explanation “credible” but many politicians in the US and around the world are sceptical.

Turkish security sources have a different story.

They say Khashoggi was tortured, murdered and his body dismembered.

Trae Young Erupts for 35, Collin Sexton Struggles as Hawks Blow Out Cavaliers

CLEVELAND, OH - OCTOBER 21: Trae Young #11 of the Atlanta Hawks and Collin Sexton #2 of the Cleveland Cavaliers look on during the game on October 21, 2018 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland Cavaliers still haven’t won a game since LeBron James left.

Cleveland fell to the Atlanta Hawks, 133-111, in Sunday’s game at Quicken Loans Arena. Atlanta is now 1-2, while the Cavaliers fell to 0-3.

The game was advertised as a showdown between rookie point guards Trae Young (No. 5 pick) and Collin Sexton (No. 8 pick), and Young had the clear upper hand with 35 points and 11 assists behind six three-pointers and 13-of-23 shooting from the field. Sexton countered with four points on 2-of-11 shooting.

Young’s Status as Hawks’ Best Player Makes Him ROY Front-Runner

Young is going to be under the spotlight all season after leading the nation in points (27.4) and assists (8.7) per game during his one collegiate campaign at Oklahoma.

And he’s going to deliver with monster numbers.

Young’s full arsenal was on display against the Cavs, as he showed off his range extending to the parking lot, playmaking ability off the dribble and vision when dishing out assists in half-court sets. He caught fire in the second quarter and gave the Hawks a four-point halftime lead after they fell behind by double digits in the early going.

Adam Fromal @fromal09

This game is selling me on Trae Young. His passing vision is so advanced for his age/experience level, and he’s creating more space to shoot than I thought he would early on in the pros (if ever).

Gerald Bourguet @GeraldBourguet

Trae Young is just as fun as I hoped he’d be so far. This season is going to be a long one, so ride these highs, Hawks fans

Dan Wolken @DanWolken

Too bad Trae Young’s career ended in the Salt Lake Summer League, according to NBA Twitter.

Atlanta Hawks @ATLHawks

Live look at Trae 🔥 https://t.co/SWN6IL4sAT

Atlanta is not going to contend in the Eastern Conference, so the 2018-19 campaign is all about Young developing as a franchise building block. He has freedom with the ball and green lights for shots most rookies only dream of, and he built on the 20 points and nine assists he put up against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.

A direct comparison to his rookie counterpart in Sunday’s contest underscores why Young will be a significant factor in the Rookie of the Year race all season.

Sexton didn’t start and has to default to a number of veterans in Kevin Love, JR Smith, Tristan Thompson, Rodney Hood and Jordan Clarkson. He doesn’t get anywhere near the opportunities to take the game over on an individual basis that Young does on a poor Hawks roster, and many rookies will be in similar situations across the league (such as Deandre Ayton with Devin Booker or Luka Doncic with Dirk Nowitzki and DeAndre Jordan).

That will clear the way for Young to put up numbers they can’t match.

Sexton Predictably Failing to Impress Early On

There are going to be growing pains for Sexton, especially on a team that leaves him lower on the pecking order without as many chances to develop his individual skills as Young.

He flashed his quickness in transition at times, but he also forced the issue and found himself trapped or putting up bad shots and struggled to keep up with Young as evidenced by his four fouls in 28 minutes.

Nate Duncan @NateDuncanNBA

Collin Sexton trying to make up all 35 points Trae Young has scored each time he touches the ball. And each wild miss at the rim is leading to an ATL break

Sexton’s primary concern is his lackluster shooting, as he is yet to hit a three-pointer through three games after shooting just 33.6 percent from deep at Alabama. That allows defenses to sag off him and cut off driving lanes, which leads to the contested shots that helped spur breaks for the Hawks.

It also creates situations in which defenses can jump into passing lanes if they aren’t as concerned with his outside shooting, which helps explain his three assists to six turnovers through three contests.

There will be plenty of time for Sexton to work on his jumper and expand his game, but his first three contests highlighted the fact that it takes more than just pure speed to beat NBA defenses.

Cavs Can’t Let Slow Start Impact Love’s High Usage

James’ departure opened the door for the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Philadelphia 76ers, Indiana Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks to compete for the Eastern Conference crown and left the bottom few seeds as the Cavaliers’ most realistic playoff outlook.

The only way they are going to reach the playoffs after reaching the NBA Finals the last four seasons is consistently forcing the issue to Love, their clear-cut top option.

He finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds in Sunday’s loss but was a mere 6-of-19 from the field. It was the second straight game he went 6-of-19 from the field after he was an ugly 5-of-18 in the opener.

That shouldn’t dissuade Cleveland from establishing him in the post. It ran the early offense through him inside the lane against the Hawks and quickly built a 22-7 lead. He showed off a quick first step and threw down a dunk and finished the first quarter with 10 points and five boards.

NBA @NBA

Kevin Love GETTING UP! #BeTheFight https://t.co/6xf5bL40pC

Nate Duncan @NateDuncanNBA

Cavs still running that small screening for KLove out of the corner. Hawks got killed by that in first Q. Really takes advantage of Love’s ability to post or shoot.

However, Cleveland stopped working it to him in the lane during the middle portion as the Hawks stole momentum, and he drifted outside where he didn’t have the same open looks he used to when James attracted so much defensive attention. The result was 1-of-8 from deep and a blowout loss.

Love shouldn’t abandon his outside shooting seeing how it is one of the skills that makes him so dangerous as a matchup problem, but the early evidence of success inside mirrored some of his days on the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Cleveland needs to keep going to him early and often, otherwise this is going to be a long season for the defending Eastern Conference champions.

What’s Next?

Both teams have home games Wednesday, with the Hawks hosting the Dallas Mavericks and the Cavaliers hosting the Brooklyn Nets.

Trump ‘not satisfied’ with Saudis but will he pressure Riyadh?

US President Donald Trump says there have clearly been “deception and lies” about how Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed.

He says he is not satisfied, and that he won’t be until he finds answers.

He has cast doubt on Saudi Arabia’s explanations, which have changed several times since Khashoggi disappeared on October 2.

Trump has been criticised for defending the kingdom and refusing to give up lucrative arms sales to Riyadh worth billions of dollars.

But do his arguments about Saudi arms deals convince anyone?

And will he put pressure on Riyadh?

Honduran women find safety in numbers in migrant caravan

Esquipulas, Guatemala – Maria Adela Vasquez does not want to be here. Waiting inside a migrant shelter in southern Guatemala, along with her daughter and niece, she hopes to continue her journey north and into Mexico.

Vasquez is from Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital, where along with her 17-year-old daughter run a small street-side food stall.

But things took a turn for the worse when local gangs and criminal groups began extorting them for money and threatened their lives.

“They do not forgive. They do not care what kind of business it is. Money is what interests them,” Vasquez told Al Jazeera on Saturday.

“They threatened her [daughter] and said if she did not pay they would kill her.”

Worried for her daughter’s safety, Vasquez decided to flee Honduras with her and her niece after seeing the news about the caravan of thousands of migrants and refugees heading north.

The route though can be dangerous, especially for women, so Vasquez is relieved to be with others. After crossing the border into Guatemala on Friday in a group of 17 people, including children, she joined many others 10km up the road, at the Casa del Migrante Jose shelter in Esquipulas.

“We came with company. It gives us a bit more strength and security,” said Vasquez.

Women and girls make up nearly half of the first wave of the exodus [Sandra Cuffe/Al Jazeera]

More than 1,000 migrants and refugees set off on foot and on buses from northwestern Honduras on October 13, with numbers quickly rising to include several thousand more.

Thousands of Hondurans have already made it across Guatemala’s northern border into Mexico, and groups of varying sizes are following behind throughout Guatemala.

Hundreds of others continue to flee every day in the hope of reaching Mexico despite the fortified borders, blockades, police checkpoints and fences they face along the way.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump continues to demand governments in the region halt the exodus and take people back to Honduras, threatening to cut off aid to the governments of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

In a tweet last week, he also threatened to call in the army and shut the southern border of the United States.

Escaping violence

Women and girls make up nearly half of the first wave of the northbound exodus, according to statistics released on Saturday by officials from a shelter in southern Mexico.

Of the 5,109 people accounted for, 1,565 are women and 952 are girls.

Honduran women such Vasquez, her daughter and her niece say they find safety in numbers. The route into and through Mexico can be dangerous for undocumented Central Americans.

Tens of thousands of migrants and refugees have gone missing along the way over the years, according to estimates by migrant rights groups, and many women and girls have been sexually assaulted.

Reina Madrid, a 33-year-old mother of four, crossed over into Guatemala the same day as Vasquez, but with a few hundred other people. Violence against women is a risk along the route through Mexico, but it is also a reality at home, she told Al Jazeera.

For years, Honduras has had one of the highest per capita homicide rates in the world. More men than women are murdered, but the lack of justice plagues both.

In roughly 90 percent of all homicide cases in Honduras, no one is arrested or prosecuted.

The few successful investigations into killings of women are often homicides committed by husbands, boyfriends and ex-partners, a majority trend in much of the world. But the homicides that remain in impunity can be brutal.

The word “encostalado”, which roughly translates as “in a sack”, has become part of the Honduran national vocabulary.

It refers to dismembered corpses found stuffed in large sacks, often at the side of roads and highways. Both men and women are sometimes killed in this manner.

“A woman’s life is worth nothing [in Honduras]. They are found in sacks,” said Madrid. “Nothing is done”.

Madrid is staying in Esquipulas for now to look for work, while Vasquez hopes to do the same in Mexico.

Although many migrants and refugees are hoping to push further north into the US, an increasing number of them now have plans to settle at different points along the way.

On Sunday, Vasquez, her daughter and her niece finally set out from the Esquipulas shelter, walking north with a large group.

More migrants and refugees crossing the border from Honduras into Guatemala have already taken their place at the shelter.

Trump admin seeks to erase the identity of transgender Americans

In one of the Donald Trump administration’s most flagrant acts of evil to date, a narrowed legal definition of gender that is currently under consideration could jeopardize the rights of 1.4 million transgender Americans.

A Sunday report from the New York Times makes public an effort spearheaded by the Department of Health and Human Services to more explicitly define gender under the federal civil rights law, Title IX.

A memo obtained by the Times stresses that enforcement of the law necessitates a more explicit definition of gender, one determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.”

The memo calls for the Departments of Education, Justice, Labor, and Health and Human Services — the four agencies that are most responsible for enforcing Title IX — to embrace the definition. The notion is that if these four agencies come together around a uniform definition, courts will be more likely to accept it.

Title IX, for anyone who needs a brief history lesson is actually just one piece of a larger law, the Education Amendments Act of 1972. It states, quite plainly:

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

The newly proposed narrower definition would view gender identity in binary terms, making it an unchangeable designation based on the genitalia a person is born with. In situations where there’s some dispute over gender, genetic testing would be employed.

This definition of gender would effectively invalidate the federal recognition of the estimated 1.4 million transgender Americans — rights that were significantly expanded by the courts during President Barack Obama’s time in the White House. Catherine E. Lhamon, an Obama administration vet who ran the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights — which made great strides for trans equality — sums up the issue succinctly.

“This takes a position that what the medical community understands about their patients — what people understand about themselves — is irrelevant because the government disagrees.”

In a statement provided to Mashable, the National Center for Transgender Equality decries the “heartless restraints” this redefinition would place on the lives of transgender citizens. It does provide some small reassurance, however, pointing to the legal battles that have already set precedents for trans rights in America.

In the name of preempting some misinformation, let’s talk about what this proposed rule would not do. It would not eliminate the precedents set by dozens of federal courts over the last two decades affirming the full rights and identities of transgender people. It would not undo the consensus of the medical providers and scientists across the globe who see transgender people, know transgender people, and urge everyone to accept us for who we are. And no rule—no administration—can erase the experiences of transgender people and our families. While foolish, this proposed rule deflates itself in the face of the facts, and the facts don’t care how the Trump administration feels.

This isn’t the first time the current administration has worked to curtail trans rights in America. Just a few months after taking office in 2017, Trump tweeted out his plan to bar trans individuals from serving in the U.S. military “in any capacity.”

That was a step too far on its own, a move that would have effectively stripped away the rights of trans individuals who already serve. It’s been challenged in court and hasn’t yet been enforced as an official policy.

This new Department of Health and Human Services memo represents an even graver threat to trans rights. It will directly impact ongoing battles over trans rights in everything from schools to public bathrooms, and will in general strip away many of the basic rights from some of America’s most vulnerable and discriminated against citizens.

The Human Rights Campaign, a prominent LGBTQ civil rights advocacy group, has already responded to the Times report.

Defining “sex” in this narrow language tailored to the talking points of anti-equality extremists is part of a deliberate strategy to eliminate federal protections for LGBTQ people. https://t.co/mavnVR38jJ

“Setting a destructive precedent, the Trump-Pence administration intends to erase LGBTQ people from federal civil rights protections and eviscerate enforcement of non-discrimination laws,” HRC president Chad Griffin said in a statement.

“Defining ‘sex’ in this narrow language tailored to the talking points of anti-equality extremists is part of a deliberate strategy to eliminate federal protections for LGBTQ people. This is a direct attack on the fundamental equality of LGBTQ people and, if this administration refuses to reverse course, Congress must immediately take action by advancing the Equality Act to ensure that LGBTQ people are explicitly protected by our nation’s civil rights laws.”

In case it’s not already clear, let me spell it out in more direct terms: The Trump administration is actively working to invalidate the legal existence of transgender citizens. The political calculus apparently holds that there are more people in Trump’s base than there are transgender citizens and their allies.

Prove that math wrong. Make sure you vote in November.

UPDATED Oct. 21, 2018, 12:30 p.m. ET with a clearer explanation of existing legal precedents supporting trans rights and a statement from the National Center for Transgender Equality.
