Elon Musk goes underground to show ‘disturbingly long’ LA tunnel

The Boring Company CEO Elon Musk seems to be confounded about what a tunnel is. It’s ironic since the company’s main mission is to build tunnels for quick, high-speed underground travel. Or the tweets are just Musk being faux-modest about what his company’s accomplished.

Musk, the man behind SpaceX and Tesla, said ln October that a tunnel in Los Angeles would open by the end of the year. On Saturday night he tweeted a preview of the dark and “one-dimensional” underground tube.

SEE ALSO: The Boring Company wants to build tunnels right under your garage

He said he walked the entire tunnel and found it “disturbingly long.” The tunnel is supposed to be 2.7 miles upon completion.

These all seem to be common descriptors for tunnels, but Musk is still surprised by the tunnel’s tunnelness.

The first section of the Hawthorne test tunnel that Musk showed in a 34-second timelapse video will be open for rides, so pedestrians and cyclists can try it out, after an opening party on Dec. 10.

In a new podcast interview with Recode’s Kara Swisher Musk talked about The Boring Company and building a network of tunnels under Los Angeles. Again he brought up the dimensionality of the tunnel — and distinguished what makes his tunnels different from a subway system.

“…even subways tend to be essentially two-dimensional. You’ll have a subway cross another subway, but they’ve never really tried to make many layers of subways,” he said.

He called the upcoming opening event a “one-dimensional party” — it seems he really wants us to understand this is a single tunnel going from point A to point B. Low expectations.

Pete Davidson’s ‘SNL’ joke about a GOP candidate didn’t go well

2016%2f10%2f18%2f6f%2f2016101865slbw.6b8ca.6b5d9By Sasha Lekach

Pete Davidson’s appearance on Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update segment grabbed a lot of attention on Sunday with his comments about his real-life break-up with performer Ariana Grande.

That left a poor-taste joke poking fun at the physical appearance of candidates running for office initially overlooked. But as the clip spread, backlash started brewing about Davidson’s move to mock a Republican congressional candidate who wears an eye patch.

SEE ALSO: Pete Davidson asks ‘SNL’ viewers to cool it with the Ariana Grande break-up stuff

Dan Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL who is running as the Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives for Texas’s 2nd congressional district, lost his eye in an IED explosion in Afghanistan. He’s a combat veteran.

In the segment, Davidson said Crenshaw looks like “a hit man in a porno movie.” He immediately acknowledged the mean-spiritedness of the comment and said, “I’m sorry I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.”

Weekend Update co-host Michael Che anticipated the outcry before Davidson even started the joke. After a photo of Crenshaw with an eye patch displayed on the screen, Che lamented, “Come on, man.” But Davidson carried on.

After his Crenshaw impression, he moved on to a Democrat, “so I look fair.” It wasn’t all attacks on right-wing candidates, but still.

Crenshaw posted about the bad joke Sunday, noting “I hope [SNL] recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes.”

Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended. That being said, I hope @nbcsnl recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes.

— Dan Crenshaw (@DanCrenshawTX) November 4, 2018

A bevy of responses followed, assuring the candidate that joking about his war injuries was in poor taste. People from both the left and right acknowledged that going after physical appearances and former combat veterans was a low blow (even if it’s not the worst rhetoric our country has seen in recent years).

Yeah, some people dress up as a Mexican border wall and think it’s cool; some poke fun at wounded warriors. Both are bad and should be treated as such. If you think one is ok and not the other, check your bias.

— Matt (@RealEnglishMatt) November 4, 2018

Pete Davidson mocking GOP candidate Dan Crenshaw because he wears an eyepatch after he lost right eye in an IED blast as a Navy SEAL was truly abhorrent and rotten to the core. And the fact that so-called “joke” was approved by an entire staff of writers is horrific. #SNL

— Joseph A. Wulfsohn (@JosephWulfsohn) November 4, 2018

Pete Davidson’s “joke” was gross and never OK to joke about. Period.

That said, Tuesday’s SO much bigger for vets than a line on SNL. It’s about a GOP that wants to privatize our VA. It’s about the 1-in-10 vets who depend on Medicaid, that GOP wants to cut, and more.

So, VOTE!

— VoteVets (@votevets) November 4, 2018

Thank you for your service It’s sad that Pete Davidson and @nbcsnl don’t recognize what you have sacrificed. That said, you will be a welcome addition to the US House https://t.co/nLS6Jp8WYd

— Sean Spicer (@seanspicer) November 4, 2018

The “unhinged left?” That’s where you go? I don’t even know Pete Davidson’s political views, but this liberal thinks his joke was lame and mean. But I think your post is worse, bc Pete is a dumb actor. You’re a political leaders spewing hate against an entire group of ppl

— CeeJayGee (@butchcjg) November 4, 2018

Rep. Pete King from New York, who was also included in the segment, took to Twitter to call for Davidson’s or someone at NBC’s firing. An ironic request from a man who supports a president who has mocked a reporter’s physical disability, insulted a Gold Star family, and disparaged John McCain’s military service. Trump’s still got his job.

None of which excuses Davidson’s remarks on SNL. He may not be held to the same public standards as a politician (at least in the pre-Trump era), but that doesn’t mean he can get away with spouting whatever mean-spirited garbage he wants.

Mashable has reached out to NBC for comment and we’ll update this story once we hear back.

Halsey’s Raw ‘Without Me’ EMA Performance Ended With A Downpour

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

Before she began singing “Without Me” literally on her hands and knees onstage at the 2018 MTV EMA, Halsey revealed that this was her first time singing it live. Not just on television, mind you — first time ever. Knowing that makes everything she did up there even more impressive.

Halsey sang the song, sure, but she did it while chained to a post, enclosed in a glass case (of emotion), and, eventually, drenched in a downpour. It mirrored the video’s depressive intensity, visually capturing the rawness of a song Halsey said she “cried the whole time” while recording.

Though she spent most of the harrowing song trapped in a box, the performance took a very watery turn when the case lifted — as soon as the “Cry Me a River” interpolation hit — and Halsey got soaked by the rain. After the final notes rang out, she sat there on the ground for a moment, collecting herself.

“It’s just me. No wig, no colorful hair, no character,” she said of the song when it premiered in October, “and it’s about my life and about my relationship that the world has watched so closely and so vehemently in the past year and a half.” The video has its own G-Eazy lookalike, but on the EMA stage, it was just Halsey. And she was more than enough.

See the full list of EMA winners here, and catch the entire show at 7 p.m. ET on MTV or stream on MTVEMA.com!

Trump touts dubious African-American support in midterm homestretch

President Donald Trump waves to supporters at a campaign rally.

President Donald Trump won only 8 percent of the black vote in the 2016 election. | Mark Wallheiser/Getty Images

President Donald Trump on Sunday boasted of his support among African-Americans by citing questionable polling data, two days before voters cast their ballots in a midterm election with historic implications for black candidates.

“New Fox Poll shows a ‘40% Approval Rating by African Americans for President Trump, a record for Republicans.’ Thank you, a great honor!” the president wrote on Twitter.

Story Continued Below

Trump’s post is an apparent reference not to a survey by Fox News, but instead to a recent poll by Rasmussen Reports featured in a Fox News segment on Sunday morning. That Rasmussen survey, a daily tracking poll from Oct. 29, showed that 40 percent of black respondents approved of the president’s performance. A Fox News poll from Oct. 17 found that 29 percent of all nonwhite registered voters approve of Trump’s job performance.

Rasmussen’s methodology is frequently questioned by mainstream pollsters, and its work has been accused of harboring a pro-Republican bias.

In a weeks-long slate of campaign rallies for Republican candidates ahead of Election Day, Trump has consistently bragged about low minority unemployment rates he claims are a byproduct of his administration’s economic policies. In August 2016, he memorably implored black voters to elect him president by asking, “What the hell do you have to lose?”

Trump won only 8 percent of the black vote in the 2016 presidential election, while roughly 88 percent of black voters opted for his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Among the many high-profile minority candidates vying for office on Tuesday, Democrat Stacey Abrams of Georgia is competing to become the nation’s first black female governor. Her Republican opponent, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, has been accused of trying to disenfranchise minority voters and has been the subject of multiple lawsuits related to limiting voting rights.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a Democrat, could be elected Florida’s first black governor on Nov. 6. His opponent, former Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis, was criticized for using racially loaded language in August when he called Gillum “articulate” and said voters shouldn’t “monkey this up” by electing Gillum governor.

On Saturday, a member of Trump’s Cabinet, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, used the term “cotton-pickin’” at a rally for DeSantis to describe the importance of the state’s gubernatorial race.

Rebel Wilson faces backlash after her ‘plus size rom-com lead’ comment

Image: Rich Polk/Getty Images for MTV

2017%2f10%2f20%2fa0%2fchloebryan11.0b114By Chloe Bryan

Rebel Wilson caught some heat on Thursday for declaring herself the first plus-sized woman to be the lead in a romantic comedy. (Her new film Isn’t It Romantic comes out next Valentine’s Day.)

She was wrong: Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique, for example, have taken on such roles in the past.

I still can’t believe that Rebel Wilson doubled down on the lie that she’s the first fat actress to star in a rom-com. Like Mo’Nique didn’t snag a handsome doctor in Phat Girlz! Like Queen Latifah didn’t get Common AND LL Cool J!

Instead of admitting her gaffe and moving on, though, it appears that Wilson is blocking people who’ve pointed out her mistake on Twitter. In particular, numerous critics of color — many of whom brought up Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique in their comments — reported being blocked by Wilson over the weekend. (Mo’Nique herself encouraged Wilson to “take a moment and know the history,” but as far as we know, she was not blocked.)

Film and television critic ReBecca Theodore-Vachon even gave it a hashtag: #RebelWilsonBlockedMe. (There are plenty of tweets about this that don’t use the hashtag as well.)

I shared my honest & respectful thoughts on Rebel Wilson’s erasure of iconic plus sized women before her.

Her blocking a fellow plus woman in this industry is a reminder that she doesn’t want to acknowledge her plus peers but rather ignore them entirely. pic.twitter.com/icUvY9QrCR

Wilson did tweet in a reply to playwright Claire Willett Saturday that she will address what happened “while promoting [Isn’t it Romantic] in the proper forums.”

“It was never my intention to erase anyone else’s achievements and I adore you and Queen Latifah so so much x,” she also tweeted in response to Mo’Nique’s criticism. “I support all plus size ladies and everything positive we are doing together.”

So maybe an apology is forthcoming, but this is still a disturbing sequence of events for a few reasons. First, it is clear from a quick Google search that Wilson’s original statement wasn’t true — did she do any research at all? Next, Wilson’s choice to block people of color for criticizing her also makes her seem not only unwilling to listen, but unwilling to listen to voices different from her own.

“We gotta lift each other up,” Willett wrote on Twitter, “and that means fairly crediting the women who got there first.”

‘Fortnite’ fans are going wild after the big, purple cube disappeared

Something new happened in Fortnite and no one knows what it means yet.

The purple cube, which was nicknamed “Kevin,” is gone. The area around its former home, floating above a lake, is altered. Everyone who witnessed the cube’s disappearance got zapped into a floaty space filled with white lights and some weird kind of butterfly.

If you don’t play Fortnite, none of this makes sense. Let’s back up.

Fortnite is one of the most popular video games on the planet in 2018. It pits up to 100 players against one another in a massive “battle royale” map where the last person or squad standing wins. Everyone starts on even footing, with no gear; a big piece of the game involves gathering resources during a match and using them to propel your victory.

That’s the basic explanation. But Fortnite is much bigger than the game you play. It’s a live experience driven by seasonal shifts. There’s just one playable map, but it’s changed again and again as one-time events (like June’s rocket launch) mark those key moments.

Sunday’s cube disappearance finished a journey that started in August. That’s when the giant purple cube first appeared in the game. It had weird symbols scrawled all over it and repelled anyone who got too close.

It also moved.

No one noticed it at first because it happened so slowly. But starting in late August, the Fortnite cube moved a short distance once every two hours (roughly). It’s path across the map eventually led it to “Loot Lake,” where it stopped and appeared to melt into the water. This was in mid-September.

When Season 6 of Fortnite kicked off about a week later, the cube reappeared. It rose out of the lake, floating up into the air along with an island that had once lived in Loot Lake. The island fell back to ground level a few days later, breaking into smaller pieces in the process. Meanwhile, the cube started to crack.

All of that set the stage for Sunday’s in-game event. Here, just see it for yourself:

After leaving the white space, players returned to find their Fortnite map transformed.

One thing: Kevin’s disappearance marked the end of an ongoing “Fortnitemares” Halloween event which saw players dealing with Cube Monsters trying to kill them in addition to all the other human players.

The space below Kevin, an area formerly known as Loot Lake, was also transformed. Instead of it being a mostly empty lake, the area is now populated by a number of smaller islands. There may be other terrain changes too.

This is the kind of stuff that makes Fortnite so magical. The fact that it’s playable on pretty much any modern machine capable of playing video games definitely helps, but the event factor is strong.

What happened on Sunday is never going to happen again in Fortnite. The people who were there, the ones who know the game well, they recognized that and cut the fighting so they could watch Kevin’s exit unfold. They stopped playing so they could bear witness.

That’s a powerful thing. Fortnite‘s events captivate audiences inside and outside the game like few others can. Even if you missed it in the moment, it’s a cool thing to behold.
