In Japan, Trump praises Kim Jong Un, rails against U.S. border wall ruling

Donald Trump and Shinzo Abe

Trump’s tweets came hours before he met with close ally Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his four-day state visit.

President Donald Trump on Sunday took time out on his state visit to Japan to re-affirm his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and rail against a U.S. judge for partially blocking his border-wall funding plan.

“North Korea fired off some small weapons, which disturbed some of my people, and others, but not me. I have confidence that Chairman Kim will keep his promise to me,” Trump wrote in a tweet posted before 6 a.m. local time.

Story Continued Below

Trump’s tweets came hours before he met with close ally Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his four-day trip to Japan to discuss North Korean engagement, ongoing trade negotiations and to meet with Japan’s newest emperor Naruhito.

North Korea launched several suspected short-range missiles earlier this month, which Trump has dismissed as “very standard” following a series of personal negotiations with the authoritarian leader.

Japan relies heavily on American forces to defend itself, and has repeatedly raised concerns over North Korea’s missile tests, saying they are a violation of U.N. resolutions.

On Saturday, Trump arrived aboard Air Force One at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo before meeting with Japanese business executives, where he talked about the strong relationship between the two countries and the future of trade relations.

“Japan has had a substantial advantage for many, many years, but that’s OK, maybe that’s why you like us so much,” Trump said, adding that in the future it will be “a little bit more fair, I think.”

Trade negotiations between the two countries have been a major factor in the U.S.-Japan relationship after Trump withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership early in his presidency. Last week, Trump delayed auto tariffs for six months while the administration pursues trade deals with Europe and Japan.

Later Sunday, Trump met with Abe in Chiba, where they played golf and will attend a sumo wrestling championship, before going to dinner with the prime minister and his wife, Akie.

On Monday, Trump will meet with Emperor Naruhito, the first foreign leader to do so since he assumed the throne.

Earlier Sunday, at 4:35 a.m. local time, Trump lambasted a Friday ruling by Calif.-based U.S. District Court Judge Haywood Gilliam halting a $1 billion transfer from Pentagon counterdrug moneys aimed at funding parts of border-wall construction and maintenance in Texas and Arizona.

“Another activist Obama appointed judge has just ruled against us on a section of the Southern Wall that is already under construction. This is a ruling against Border Security and in favor of crime, drugs and human trafficking. We are asking for an expedited appeal!” Trump wrote.

About a half hour later in a barrage of tweets and re-tweets, Trump thanked actor Jon Voight, re-tweeted Fox News host Jesse Watters and railed against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett for committing what Trump claims is a hate crime.

Smollett was accused of staging an attack in Chicago where two men wearing MAGA hats yelled homophobic and racist remarks, but his case was dismissed by the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

In his later North Korea tweet, Trump also said he “smiled when [Kim] called Swampman Joe Bidan a low IQ individual, & worse. Perhaps that’s sending me a signal?”

North Korea has labeled Biden, the former vice president and Democratic candidate for president in 2020, a “fool of low IQ” and an “imbecile bereft of elementary quality as a human being” after he called Kim a tyrant during a recent speech, according to the Associated Press.

Trump has held two summits with Kim in Singapore and Hanoi, Vietnam. Trump tweeted in April that a third summit “would be good” while writing glowingly of their relationship. North Korea this week said it would not be open to further talks until the U.S. changes its position on nuclear disarmament.

Bong Joon-Ho’s ‘Parasite’ wins big at Cannes: What critics are saying

Ki-jung (Park So-dam) and Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik) in 'Parasite,' which premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

By Proma Khosla

Okja director Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite won the Palme d’Or in a unanimous decision at 2019’s Cannes Film Festival. This is the first time a Korean director has won the festival’s top honor.

Cannes jury president Alejandro G. Iñárritu said, “We all shared the mystery of the unexpected way this film took us through different genres and spoke in a funny, humorous, tender way — with no judgment — of something so relevant and urgent, so global in such a local film, with such a beautiful efficiency of media, and an understanding of what film really is. We were all fascinated when we saw it, and it kept growing and growing: that’s why it was a unanimous decision.”

The director’s fifth film ever – the story of two poor siblings who infiltrate a rich household – joins an unclassifiable oeuvre defined only by his remarkable style and memorable stories. Variety hails it as a logical and admirable progression:

The Korean trickster god is above all known for his uncategorizable movie melées which tumble bloodily down the genre stairs hitting every step — comedy, horror, drama, social commentary, slasher, creature feature, murder mystery, manifesto for vegetarianism — on the way. But while Parasite certainly cycles through more than half that list, the laugh is darker, the snarl more vicious and the sob more despairing than we’ve ever had from him before. Bong is back and on brilliant form, but he is unmistakably, roaringly furious, and it registers because the target is so deserving, so enormous, so 2019: “Parasite” is a tick fat with the bitter blood of class rage.

Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri found the film similarly genre-defying:

When I interviewed Bong years ago, he told me that he loves genre movies but hates genre conventions, and here he upends that idea: Parasite is not a genre movie, but it occasionally employs — carefully, playfully, deliriously — genre conventions and all the assumptions that come with them. You keep expecting Parasite to turn into one thing, but it keeps turning into something else. It mutates, like a real parasite trying to hang on to its host.

Polygon’s Karen Han wasn’t the only one to invoke the multiple applause breaks the film earned, as well as her own visceral reaction to it:

Watching the Jenga tower wobble is exhilarating, and led to not only one but two bursts of applause during the critics’ screening at Cannes (the only film I attended to earn any applause before credits rolled). The contrast between the delicate balance the characters must maintain and Bong’s bombastic, pull-out-all-the-stops storytelling is a pure adrenaline rush — I was shaking when I left the theater, and remained that way for at least an hour.

Stephen Dalton at the Hollywood Reporter called it “cumbersomely plotted and heavy-handed in its social commentary,” as well as slightly overlong, but a quality film regardless. He heaped particular praise on Bong’s team, calling out the individual talent it took to make this film happen.

The performances are uniformly solid, with special credit due to the child and teen actors. Hong Kyung-pyo’s high-gloss cinematography combines lustrous candy-shop colors with kinetic precision, while Lee Ha-jun’s production design is typically superb, especially the elegantly minimalist Park family mansion, which serves as both deluxe fortress and sinister prison. Spliced into Jung Jaei-il’s dread-laden score, fragrant bouquets of classical music provide bustling comic counterpoint as well as wry commentary on the snooty cultural values being slowly eviscerated onscreen.

Film School Rejects said the film’s main point of contention will be whether or not it’s “perfect”:

Good luck arguing against its brilliant, inimitable, all-encompassing craftsmanship. The film is laugh-out-loud funny, an astute blend of humanity and absurdity, thrilling until its final depraved moments, a pristinely shot modern architectural feast for the eyes, a razor-sharp socio-economic critique, and a cryptic operatic drama…Everything is quickly and sharply edited, teeming with impressive, geometric cinematography. He reveals just enough to let you in on what’s going on but keeps enough from you to always leave you at the edge of your seat in a state of thrilled delight. It’s Bong’s economical screenwriting and inventive direction that makes Parasite such a triumph, and the plot summary ends here.

The Guardian called Parasite “a luxuriously watchable and satirical suspense drama.”

It runs as purringly smooth as the Mercedes driven by the lead character, played by Korean star Song Kang-ho. Parasite is a bizarre black comedy about social status, aspiration, materialism and the patriarchal family unit, and people who accept the idea of having (or leasing) a servant class.

IndieWire’s David Ehrlich says that “with Parasite, Bong finally becomes a genre unto himself.”

Giddy one moment, unbearably tense the next, and always so entertaining and fine-tuned that you don’t even notice when it’s changing gears, Parasite takes all of the beats you expect to find in a Bong film and shrinks them down with clockwork precision. The movie doesn’t feel smaller than the globe-trotting Okja, only more constricted…the film contains a number of inspired sequences that pulse with the same, chaotic, morally relative madness of Bong’s signature moments.

Parasite does not yet have a wide release date.

Lionel Messi, Barcelona Upset by Valencia in Copa del Rey Final

SEVILLE, SPAIN - MAY 25: Kevin Gameiro of Valencia CF celebrates with his team mates after scoring his team's first goal during the Spanish Copa del Rey match between Barcelona and Valencia at Estadio Benito Villamarin on May 25, 2019 in Seville, . (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)

Denis Doyle/Getty Images

Valencia upset holders Barcelona 2-1 in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday, denying the Blaugrana a domestic double and fifth cup win in a row.

Kevin Gameiro gave Los Che a deserved advantage after 21 minutes, and Rodrigo punished more poor defending to double the lead before half-time.

Lionel Messi converted from close range to halve the deficit after 73 minutes, but Barcelona’s comeback fell short.

The Catalans could have won their fourth domestic double in five years on Saturday after securing the 2018-19 La Liga title in April.

Barcelona Must Break the Bank for De Ligt

While Valencia may have won the Copa del Rey on Saturday, perhaps the biggest winner wasn’t even on the pitch.

Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has been linked to the Blaugrana for months now, but according to Catalan radio station RAC1 (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United are now the favourites for his signature because they’re offering him and his agent, Mino Raiola, much better terms.

Sport Witness noted it’s possible Raiola has leaked the news to put more pressure on Barcelona:

Sport Witness @Sport_Witness

As we explain in the article, it’s coming from a Catalan news source, so one would assume (if it’s not make-believe) that it’s from Barca.

Then the next logical assumption is it’s what Raiola has told Barca. That’s either because it’s true, or to pile more pressure on.

Valencia highlighted the need for defensive reinforcements repeatedly, running through a disorganised Blaugrana defence. It all started after just a few minutes when Clement Lenglet―one of the worst performers in the 4-0 loss against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals―completely lost Gameiro. Only a superb intervention from Gerard Pique prevented a goal:

Samuel Marsden @samuelmarsden

Incredible from Pique. Valencia should be ahead after big Lenglet error.

Gameiro took full advantage of more dreadful positional play to score the opener, finding acres of space on the edge of the box before sidestepping Jordi Alba and drilling the ball past Jasper Cillessen.

Sports writer Rik Sharma would much rather have seen an in-form Samuel Umtiti than his compatriot:

Rik Sharma @riksharma_

Not saying he should have played today bc not been the same post-knee problem, but Umtiti at his best is a lot better than Lenglet at his best. Something to think about before making any decisions in the summer

But Lenglet wasn’t the only culprit on Saturday, and Rodrigo’s goal came as the result of even more poor organisation:

Kiyan Sobhani @KiyanSo

Pique and Semedo running back without communicating — zero awareness of where Rodrigo is, somehow.

The Barcelona defence was a complete mess, falling apart on a big stage for the second time in May. Liverpool already exposed the major issues the Blaugrana have at the back, and Los Che served up another reminder that help is sorely needed. A returning and fully healthy Umtiti won’t be enough; the Catalans need more.

De Ligt and Raiola may have a gargantuan asking price, but it’s one Barcelona have to meet:

Sport Witness @Sport_Witness

Mino right now. https://t.co/kdXYNjzxwx

The 19-year-old is already a star defender with enormous potential. He’s good with the ball at his feet and has a great understanding with Frenkie de Jong, his Ajax team-mate who will be moving to the Camp Nou in the summer.

De Ligt could anchor the Blaugrana defence for the next decade and more, and if Jean-Clair Todibo develops as expected, Barcelona may not have to worry about their defence again for a very long time.

What’s Next?

The season is over for both clubs, with the likes of Cillessen and Nelson Semedo set to feature in the UEFA Nations League finals, starting on June 5, for Holland and Portugal, respectively. Others, including Messi and Philippe Coutinho, will play in the Copa America, which begins on June 14.

Gillette’s new ad of a trans man’s first shave is honestly pretty good

It’s about to be Pride season, the time of year when brands cash in on “diversity” and emblazon a bunch of crap with the rainbow flag.

Every once in a while, however, a brand does something that actually moves the LGBTQ community forward. Take the latest ad from Gillette, which was posted on Thursday and which features a young trans teen from Canada by the name of Samson Bonkeabantu Brown, shaving for the first time.

Try to watch this without tearing up.

SEE ALSO: Women and girls will feel so seen by new guidelines for their mental health

The ad is effective not only because of its writing, which ignores clichés, but because the producers actually cast a trans person to play a trans role. Here’s how Brown described the experience in a public Facebook post.

I shot this ad for Gillette and wanted to include my father, who has been one of my greatest supporters throughout my transition, encouraging me to be confident and live authentically as my best self.

With the help of Gillette, I was able to share an important milestone in every man’s life with my father.

This moment overwhelmed me during filming and again today seeing the ad since it’s been launched. I’m keenly aware of how blessed I am to be able to exist in this world being supported by my family in ways that all too often many of my trans brother, sisters, and siblings who exist outside the binary are not always as fortunate.

I am confident that this ad will encourage many of my trans siblings and fill them with the knowledge that our existence in this world can be filled with the love and support we deserve.

Be good to yourselves. Love yourselves. And know that when you greet the world with love, it can and will love you back, often in the places you least expect.

I love you greatly.

#MyBestSelf

Gillette’s ad is part of a larger marketing campaign addressing the various faces of masculinity. Earlier in 2019, the company released an ad addressing toxic masculinity that actually polled well with viewers.

Sometimes — extremely rarely — brands get it right.

Trump administration bans the CDC from using seven more words

By Proma Khosla

The Trump administration has banned seven words from the Centers for Disease Control’s upcoming budget documents, the Washington Post reports. The words are “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.”

CDC analysts were not given a reason for the banned words, they were simply informed of the new policy. Some phrases can be replaced or retooled, like by saying “CDC bases its recommendations on science in consideration with community standards and wishes” – an actual alternate phrase offered to CDC analysts in the first briefing about these words.

But not all the words are as easy to work around. It’s no secret that the current administration is anti-abortion and pushing back significantly in the fight for trans rights. Banning these words from CDC documentation directly affects communication around HIV/AIDS and the Zika virus, among others.

This isn’t the first attempt to curb the use of language that threatens the Trump administration’s regressive policies. In March, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) removed questions about sexual orientation and gender identity from two surveys of elderly people. The department also archived a webpage containing resources for LGBTQ+ people and their families.

SEE ALSO: Snapchat’s ‘gender-swap’ filter exposes the internet’s casual transphobia

On a more fundamental level, this aligns directly with the Trump administration’s mistrust of words and facts, and its tendency to dismiss whichever words and facts conflict with the administration’s views and messaging. The inclusion of “diversity,” “entitlement,” and “vulnerable” in the new list reflects this directly; it erases the words from relevant discourse and by extension threatens to sweep larger problems under the rug.

Matt Lloyd, an HHS spokesperson, said that the department “will continue to use the best scientific evidence available to improve the health of all Americans. HHS also strongly encourages the use of outcome and evidence data in program evaluations and budget decisions.”

Encouraged or not, they can’t talk about it the same way now.

Bill Yoast Dies at 94; HSFB Coach Portrayed in ‘Remember the Titans’ Movie

WASHINGTON, : US Rep. J.C, Watts, Jr (R-OK) (R) looks on as former Alexandria, Virginia high school foootball coaches Bill Yoast (L) and Herman Boone (C) discuss the Walt Disney Company's latest film

JOYCE NALTCHAYAN/Getty Images

Former T.C. Williams coach Bill Yoast, who was a key figure in Disney’s Remember the Titans movie, died Thursday at the age of 94.

Per Alexandria City Public Schools, Yoast was living at the Aarondale Retirement and Assisted Living facility in Virginia when he died. No cause of death was given.

From 1971-96, Yoast served as the T.C. Williams football team’s defensive coach, also coaching the track and field and golf teams during that 25-year period. He won a regional football championship in 1969 as head coach at Francis C. Hammond High School.

In an interview with Jacob Bogage of the Washington Post, Herman Boone, who was head football coach at T.C. Williams from 1971-79, explained how their relationship evolved:

“No doubt, the beginning of our relationship was rocky. I didn’t know Yoast. Yoast didn’t know me. I knew that Hammond had no black athletes and I didn’t know if coach Yoast had anything to do with that. But we got to [training camp] and became roommates and found a way to talk to one another.

“I think that’s the formula for race relations throughout the world. People have to learn to talk to one another. You have to learn to talk to that individual, and when you talk to that individual, you learn to trust that individual, and that’s the greatest gift God gave to man.”

Will Patton and Denzel Washington, respectively, portrayed Yoast and Boone in the film that depicted the team’s 1971 state championship season. It was also the first year school students from all-white and all-black schools were integrated in Alexandria.

In addition to his work as a high school athletics coach, Yoast served three years in the Army Air Corps before moving into the Air Force.

Facebook exec’s defense of the ‘drunk Pelosi’ video doesn’t add up

By Adam Rosenberg

All the noise around the “drunk Pelosi” video has made something clear: Facebook wants to have it both ways.

Some at the company would have us all believe that great strides have been made in the platform’s ongoing fight against misleading “fake news” content. But Facebook also won’t take the step of removing material like the doctored Pelosi clip, preferring instead to let users make their own choice about what to believe.

That’s the takeaway from comments made by Monika Bickert, Head of Global Policy Management at Facebook, in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

“We think it’s important for people to make their own, informed choice about what to believe,” she said. Facebook works with independent fact-checking organizations to identify misleading content and flag it accordingly. So the company knows what’s fake. It just won’t take the step of removing such content.

That’s what happened with a video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that was doctored to make it appear as if she was drunk or in some other way impaired. Fact-checkers flagged it as “false,” a designation that earns the video a captioned warning and a reduced presence in News Feeds.

The video won’t be deleted entirely because it doesn’t violate community standards. Facebook will actively remove content that incites or promotes violence, which breaks the rules. The company has also shown a willingness to ban fake accounts and to de-platform problematic figures who repeatedly violate the site’s rules.

“We think it’s important for people to make their own, informed choice about what to believe.”

In the CNN interview, Cooper asks Bickert again and again why Facebook wouldn’t just delete content that’s been flagged as false. She returns again and again to that idea of letting users decide on their own what to trust Misleading content is flagged as such, and that’s supposed to be enough.

Is it, though? There’s evidence that even flagged and downranked content can enjoy considerable reach on Facebook. Perhaps that’s because certain individuals have worked hard to promote the message that the media as a whole is an enemy that shouldn’t be trusted. People believe what they want to believe in the current climate, to the point that a “misleading content” tag could be read as a positive among certain readers and belief systems.

Cooper tries to address that in his chat with Bickert, pointing out that “the video is more powerful than whatever you’re putting under the video.” Bickert deflects, suggesting that the video is OK to keep around because the conversation around it has shifted to questions like the one Cooper posed.

“Well actually what we’re seeing is that the conversation on Facebook, on Twitter, offline as well, is about this video having been manipulated,” she said. “As evidenced by my appearance today, this is the conversation.”

Later in the segment, Cooper presses Bickert on Facebook’s responsibility to accuracy as a provider of news. She pushes back, pointing out that the company is a social media business, not a news business. When Cooper presses her yet again — “you’re sharing news … because you make money from it,” he argues — Bickert draws a line between rules-violating violent content and political discourse.

“If it’s misinformation that’s related to safety, we can and we do remove it. And we work with safety groups to do that. But when we’re talking about political discourse and the misinformation around that, we think the right approach is to let people make an informed choice,” she said.

What a stunning point to make when we’re barely a month removed from the release of the almost 500-page Mueller report, roughly half of which focuses on Russian efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election. As we now know, a big portion of those efforts involved exploiting social media platforms like Facebook.

It is a proven fact by now that political misinformation can have harmful effects. Proven beyond the shadow of any doubt. It’s great to see Facebook taking action against the kinds of fake accounts that help to spread the bad stuff around, but it’s only a half-measure. Plenty of real people are taken in by misinformation around the internet that they then share on social media.

This isn’t the first time Facebook has leaned on policy to defend the presence of inappropriate content on the platform. But it’s an increasingly hard pill to swallow as suspicions about the negative impact of disinformation on political discourse are proven correct again and again. Maybe it’s time for Facebook to change the company line.

NASA captures an incredible photo of a rule-breaking spiral galaxy

Most galaxies are traveling away from our galaxy, not closer to it. Still, there are exceptions.

Take Messier 90, one of the few galaxies that appears to be traveling towards our own Milky Way galaxy. Recently, NASA’s Hubble telescope caught an awe-inspiring photo of the galaxy.

Here it is in full.

Messier 90 is part of the Virgo cluster, a collection of about 1,200 galaxies

Because the universe is expanding, most galaxies are moving away from the Milky Way galaxy. Consequently, these galaxies appear to be on the red side of the spectrum, a phenomenon known as redshift.

Messier 90, however, compresses the frequency of its light as it moves closer to us. That makes it fall closer to the blue side of the spectrum, a phenomenon known as blueshift.

It’s important to note that the Virgo cluster, of which Messier 90 is a part, is moving away from us. But Messier 90 is actually moving faster than other galaxies in the cluster, making it appear as if it’s racing towards the Milky Way. The cluster’s colossal mass accelerates some of these galaxies to very high velocities.

Just look at how pretty it makes them.

I would totally take a selfie with this galaxy.
